How to Know if You Need Breast Lift Surgery

How to Know if You Need Breast Lift Surgery

While many women are unhappy with their breasts, most are unsure about the actual procedure(s) they may need to look their best, be it breast lift surgery, breast implants or both

Breast Implant Surgery Alone

If a patient is seeking more breast volume and fullness, breast implants alone may be the perfect solution for women with small breasts or a “flat chest” with just a hint of droopiness. For women with noticeable breast drop, implants alone won’t correct sagging because they can’t actually lift the breasts back to their youthful position.

Breast Lift Surgery Without Implants

In contrast, breast lift surgery is exactly what is sounds like. During surgery, sagging breast tissue and nipples are lifted to regain a more youthful posture on the chest. If a woman is happy with her overall breast size and just wants to correct what gravity has done, breast lift surgery is the right choice. However, a breast lift won’t add volume to the upper pole of the chest or increase breast size.

Breast Lift Combined with Breast Implants

Combining the best of both procedures, breast implants paired with breast lift surgery may be the right answer for many women. Sagging breasts are raised for a more buoyant look and implants are placed to enhance the upper pole’s fullness creating a more voluptuous appearance.

The Most Common Reasons for Breast Lift Surgery

Sagging Breasts are the result of gravity, age and aggressive athletics that result is sagging nipples sitting under the breast crease on the chest.

Hereditary Sagging means a woman was born with breasts that would never stand up to time due to family genetics. Surgery is the only solution to achieve the chest profile their body deserves.

Weight Loss can cause sagging of the breast tissue or make breasts appear out of proportion compared to a slimmer figure. Surgery can size and lift breasts appropriately to suit a woman’s new body.

Pregnancy can overly stretch a woman’s skin and create sagging breasts, which can be countered with surgery to lift and tighten the breast tissue.

Good Candidates for a Breast Lift Surgery

A woman’s confidence can be impacted by how she feels about her body. A personal consultation with Dr. Ali in his Troy, MI office can answer questions about the benefits of having breast implants, breast lift surgery or the possibility of both. Here are a few physical issues to look for that might help make the decision to have breast lift surgery easier:

  • When wearing a bra, the patient is still unhappy with the way her breasts appear in size and shape. If a new push-up bra doesn’t deliver the right image, it could be time to talk to Dr. Ali about a breast lift.
  • Are the patient’s nipples drooping below the natural crease on her chest? A more youthful appearance can be restored with breast lift surgery.
  • Gravity has pulled the patient’s nipples downward, along with her sagging breasts. A breast lift can restore perkiness along with a more toned chest appearance.

Reasons for Considering Breast Revision Surgery

Reasons for Considering Breast Revision Surgery

Less than two percent of patients who have had a breast enhancement experience post complications, but in the weeks or years that follow the surgery, a sudden problem can be frightening and incredibly disappointing.

A second breast revision surgery poses a greater degree of difficulty than the original breast enhancement procedure because the surgeon is making corrections that require expertise developed over years of practice before being able to produce consistent results.

Dr. Ali is the expert surgeon to whom other physicians refer their breast revision surgery patients because of his superior expertise, high level of care and remarkable results for even the most challenging of cases. Dr. Ali is highly qualified to explain the top reasons for breast revision surgery.

Breast Revision Surgery for Implant Position

If the breast implant placement on the patient’s chest wall is incorrect it may result in the implant being too low or too high, too far apart or too close in proximity.

Breast Revision Surgery for Capsular Contracture

While less common today, breast implants performed several decades ago into the late 60’s may develop hardening of the breast or capsular contracture, which is the formation of contracted scar tissue surrounding the breast implant.

Breast Revision Surgery for Saline Implant Leak

Compared to silicone implants, saline breast implants have a much higher failure rate due to the older wall or shell of the implant lacking support strength to prevent the saline or salt water filled implant from folding in on itself.

Breast Revision Surgery for Silicone Implant Rupture

Compared to older types of silicone breast implants, the modern generation of memory or gummy silicone implants rarely rupture, but if one does the silicon typically stays in the breast pocket where it was originally seated.  A leaking silicone implant is hard to detect until the patient has a mammogram or MRI breast evaluation but even then, it’s incredibly rare for liquid silicone gel to migrate outside of the breast pocket and into the armpit.

Breast Revision Surgery for Breast Implant Rippling

Regardless of the shape, texture or silicone versus saline, all breast implants have some degree of rippling depending on the materials implanted. From high to low risk, the type of materials to consider include: Round Textured Saline implants which have the greatest risk of rippling, Teardrop Textured Saline with slightly less risk, Smooth Saline implants, then Textured Silicone and finally, Smooth Silicone implants that have minimal risk of rippling.

Other Reasons for Breast Revision Surgery

While less common, there are several other reasons that a patient may consider breast revision surgery such as post-surgery infection, misplaced or misaligned nipples, flagrant breast tissue sagging after a breast lift or reduction, or even adjusting the size of implants because the patient feels they are too big or too small.

Top Breast Revision Surgeon – Troy, MI

Dr. Ali has the skill, expertise and experience to fix almost any breast implant problem, including: implant rupture, asymmetry, capsular contracture, implant size change, and more. No matter what problems or issues you are having with your breast implants, board certified breast revision surgeon Dr. Ali will listen to your concerns and help you find the solution.

Are MemoryShape Gel Breasts Implant Safe?

MemoryShape Gel Breast Implant Safety

Every year more than 400,000 women undergo breast implant surgery – some for reconstruction following cancer, while others select breast augmentation for aesthetic reasons.  And approximately five million of these women have chosen MENTOR® breast implants – for their natural feel and realistic shape.

Mentor has been manufacturing breast implants for more than 30 years. Dr. Ali is proud to offer MENTOR® breast implants in his Troy, area surgical practice – for both their appearance, natural feel and their excellent safety record.

Mentor Worldwide LLC, is an internationally recognized leader in breast implants and is a division  of the well-known and highly respected Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Company.

Gel Breast Implant Safety

A recent US-based clinical study was conducted that concluded MENTOR MemoryShape Gel Breast Implants were extremely safe and highly effective product for breast augmentation. This 10-year long medical study involved 955 patients to track the safety of MENTOR® MemoryShape Gel Breast Implants.

The publication, which is entitled ‘Mentor Contour Profile Gel Implants: Clinical Outcomes at 10 Years,’ determined that MENTOR® MemoryShape® Implants (made using SILTEX® Texture) have several areas of proven exceptional performance.

High patient satisfaction and surgeon satisfaction was reported in this study when MENTOR® MemoryShape® Implants were used.  This is largely in part due to the low risk of complications with this brand of breast implant.

MemoryShape® Implants had among the lowest rates of capsular contracture, rupture, and implant rotation.

Additionally, there were NO reported cases of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), as of the date the study was published. This is hugely important, as some other brands of breast implants have been associated with this condition.

Also, over the course of the 10 year study there were NO reported cases of a complication called “double capsule” – where a capsule develops around the implant while a second capsule connects to the surrounding tissue – often requiring additional surgery.

MENTOR MemoryShape Gel Breast Implant Safety

The data collected in that study confirms that MENTOR MemoryShape Gel Breast Implants are very safe for patients undergoing breast implant surgery.

Additionally, MemoryShape Gel Breast Implants are backed by the comprehensive MENTOR® Promise Breast Implant Warranty Program, which is among the best breast implant warranties in the breast augmentation industry.

The 5 Types of Breast Surgery

The 5 Types of Breast Surgery

Loving her body helps a woman feel sexy and confident, whether she is curvy, lean or somewhere in between. And a woman’s breasts may help her feel attractive (or self-conscience) depending on their size, shape, position and how well she feels they flatter or detract from her overall physical appearance.

Breast surgery, when performed by an experienced and skilled plastic surgeon, can help a woman feel good about her body, by enabling her to change the shape, size and even the position of her breasts. Today, breast surgery is considered a routine medical procedure that is not only safe, but also becoming more and more affordable, with financing options to help offset the cost.

In this article, Macomb County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains the five types of breast surgery that a woman can elect to have, to improve her bust line.

Breast Reduction Surgery

Women with breasts that are too large for their body can experience serious health issues, from pain in the upper body, back and neck to posture problems that can become quite serious as they age. Due to its positive health impact, breast reduction surgery is becoming quite common, because it can help change the lives of women at any age so they can enjoy a more active lifestyle, free from pain.

Breast Lift Surgery

Over time, breasts of any size and shape will naturally begin to droop and lose their youthful appearance. Age, gravity, pregnancy, nursing and even heredity can cause the breasts to lose their elasticity and droop and sag.

Breast lift surgery can help restore and enhance the breast’s position and shape, and reduce the signs of aging. In addition to the breast being lifted and tightened, the procedure removes excess skin. The surgeon can also repositions the nipple higher on the breast for a perkier look.

Breast lift surgery can be performed with or without augmenting the breast with implants, if the patient would like the breasts to also appear fuller or larger.

Breast Augmentation Surgery (Implants)

Breast augmentation surgery is also referred to as breast implant surgery or breast enhancement surgery. In this procedure, the natural breast tissue is supplemented with inserts made from silicone or saline called implants.

Breast implant surgery can enhance the bust line of any women who feel their breasts are too small due to heredity, weight loss, or aging – all of which can impact a woman’s self-esteem.

Nipple Correction Surgery

Many women choose to have their nipples cosmetically corrected for a more pleasing appearance. Nipple Correction Surgery can solve a variety of nipple concerns from puffy, protruding, oversized or inverted nipples to altering the size and shape of the entire areola.

Nipple surgery can be performed alone – or along with additional breast surgery for enlargements, reductions, lifts or reconstruction.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery

For women who survived breast cancer, as well as women who have experienced physical chest trauma or burns, breast reconstruction surgery can help restore a better quality of life and renew their self-esteem.

Technological advances have given surgeons like Dr. Ali the ability to not only restore a patient’s beautiful female shape but to also preserve breast sensitivity which allows her to enjoy more natural sexuality.

And, with the 1998 passing of the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act, all health insurance plans are required by law to cover breast reconstruction surgery – including breast implants – for patients who endured a mastectomy or lumpectomy due to cancer and other diseases.

Best Macomb County Area Breast Surgery

Undoubtedly, women feel more confident, sexy and healthier when they feel good about their bodies. Those who make the choice to have breast surgery – whether it’s a reduction, reconstruction, augmentation, or breast lift – have said they feel amazing and more comfortable with their new shape.

Getting Used to Your New Breast Implants

Getting Used to Your New Breast Implants

In this article, top Macomb County breast enhancement surgeon Dr. Ali explains what to expect as you get used to your new breast implants.

Breast Implant Movement

After undergoing breast implant surgery, there are numerous things to consider regarding breast movement. One factor will be the type of breast implant you’ve selected, as will be the natural shape and size of your breasts. As they are soft and fluid, the majority of breast implants move naturally. However, on smaller breast implants or on breast implants underneath tighter skin, in most cases the implants remain slightly firmer and move less than larger breasts do.

Breast Implant Position

For a brief period of time after your breast implant surgery, your breasts will most likely rest higher on your chest. After several weeks or so, will drop down to their desired position. The exact time it will take for your breast implants to drop depends on where your implants are placed, their size, your muscle tone, the surface type of your implants, and the size of your breasts before your surgery. Smoother breast implants drop more rapidly than textured breast implants, and regular massaging of your breasts is an excellent way to speed up the process after surgery!

One major factor influencing the speed with which your breast implants drop is their placement. Breast implants placed under the muscle will take longer to drop than breast implants placed above the muscle.

Also, if you began with smaller breasts and opted to significantly increase your size, the tightness of your skin may result in it taking slightly longer for your breasts to drop. You may even experience one breast dropping prior to the other! While this varies from case to case, don’t worry if one breast drops before the other.

Following your breast augmentation surgery, you can speed up the dropping process by massaging your breasts. Additionally, you can help push down your breast implants by wearing a wide elastic band around the top of your chest. At the absolute longest, it can take about six to nine months for your breast implants to drop, but most breast implants drop within a period of several weeks.

Breast Implant Appearance

After undergoing breast implant surgery, it is perfectly normal for your breasts to appear slightly shiny or for you skin to experience some redness. Since your skin has been stretched out to allow room for your breast implants, you may experience a sensation comparable to a mild sunburn. This is perfectly normal, and is simply an element of the healing process. Board Certified Breast Implant Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ali will work with you select your best options for treating your skin and expediting the healing process (one affective and popular choice is massaging your breasts with shea butter moisturizers.)

In addition to slight redness, your skin may take on a slightly shiny appearance following your breast implant surgery. This results from your skin being stretched, and as you skin continues to heal, the shininess will fade.

Breast Implant Softness

There are a number of factors that play into how long it takes for your breast implants to soften up. This includes your type of implant filler, the surface type of your breast implant, your breast implant’s placement, the tone of your muscle, and the fullness of your breast implant.

In the brief period immediately following your breast implant surgery, your implants will remain relatively firm. Generally, saline implants are firmer than silicone implants, and textured implants feel firmer than smoother ones.

During your consultation with Macomb County board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali, he will explain in detail when to expect your breasts to move, drop and soften after your surgery.

How Much Do Breast Implants Cost?

How Much Do Breast Implants Cost?

The decision to have breast implant surgery is a very important and highly personal choice – so it’s important to take into consideration the cost and the quality of both the breast implants and the surgeon performing the procedure. In most cases, a patient will get what they pay for – so it’s essential to “do your homework” and not just choose the surgeon or the breast implants based solely on price.

In this article, Macomb County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains the many factors that affect breast implant prices.

Breast Implant Materials & Cost

There are pros and cons of both saline and silicone filled breast implants. Saline breast implants are considerably less expensive than silicone breast implants. However, saline breast implants are a less popular choice because they do not feel as natural to the touch, nor are they typically as natural looking as silicone breast implants.

There are actually five brands of silicone gel-filled breast implants that have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), each with different qualities. And these attributes can influence the price, as well.

Breast implant Surgeon Costs

Breast augmentation is a complex surgical procedure. Choosing a qualified, board certified surgeon like Dr. Ali in Macomb County is essential to avoid complications, minimize the risk of infection, properly address pain management and prevent scarring post-surgery. In other words, there is much less risk and much greater patient satisfaction when choosing a reputable surgeon – rather than selecting the “cheapest” doctor you can find.

The look, feel, positioning and comfort of your breast implants will all be influenced by the quality of your breast implant surgeon. If the breast implant surgery is performed by a highly experienced, board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali who specializes in breast augmentation procedures, patients can expect exquisite result – even though the cost may be slightly higher for the surgeon’s expertise and quality of post-operative care.

By choosing a surgeon like Dr. Ali, patients can avoid surgical breast implant issues such as imbalanced or uneven breasts, unnecessary scarring, and/or rippling or dimpling implants.  Dr. Ali performs hundreds of breast implant procedures each year and is meticulous in his work to ensure each patient has healthy and natural-looking breasts they love.

Comparing Breast Implant Costs

When doing research online about the cost of breast implants, keep in mind that not everything on the internet is 100% accurate or complete.

For example, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (2017 statistics) quoted $3,718 as the average cost for implant surgery. Unfortunately, this statistics does NOT include the anesthesia, the cost of an operating room, and other critical services that a surgical procedure like breast augmentation require. So, it’s best to speak with a reputable breast implant surgeon like Dr. Ali to understand the total procedure cost.

Where a patient chooses to have breast implant surgery can also dictate the total price. For example, the cost of breast augmentation in Beverly Hills is much higher than the same surgery performed in southern states like Alabama. Dr. Ali’s Macomb County office in Michigan is priced competitively in the mid-range of national reporting costs, while still delivering the highest quality of breast implant surgery available.

Insurance Coverage for Breast Implants

Cosmetic surgery, including breast augmentation, is typically considered elective and generally not covered by health insurance. However, with the 1998 passing of the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act, all health insurance plans are required by law to cover breast reconstruction surgery – including breast implants – for patients who endured a mastectomy or lumpectomy due to cancer and other diseases.

Financing for Breast Implants

While it’s true that most healthcare plans don’t cover the cost of breast implant surgery, Dr. Ali’s Macomb County office can help patients find supplemental financing options to help cover the cost.

Breast Surgery Statistics Show Increase in All Procedures

Breast Surgery Statistics –

If you’re “on the fence” about considering breast surgery – including breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction – take a look at the most recent statistics! Data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows that thousands more people opt for breasts surgery year.

Of the nearly 1.8 million cosmetic surgeries performed in 2017, the number one surgery was breast augmentation – with more than 300,000 performed. This represents and increase of 3 percent over 2016.

According to the ASPS President David H. Song, MD, MBA, FACS, “… traditional facial procedures and breast augmentations are still among the most popular … patients have more options than ever, and working closely with their surgeon, they’re able to focus on specific target areas of the body to achieve the look they desire.”

Breast Lift Surgery Statistics

Since 2000, ASPS statistics show that Breast Lifts Surgery increased by 90 percent from the year 2000 to 2017. Statistics reveal that 52,836 breast lift surgeries were performed in the US in 2000, compared to 99,614 breast lifts in 2015! In fact, breast lift surgery showed the most overall growth of any plastic surgery during that time period.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Statistics

Of the almost 2 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2015 and 2016 and 2017, the number one was breast augmentation surgery every year. 279,143 breast augmentation surgeries were performed in the US in 2015, 291, 367 were performed in 2016; and 300,378 were performed in 2017 – for a full 34 percent increase from the year 2000.

Breast Reduction Surgery Statistics

There were 68,106 aesthetic breast reduction surgeries performed in the United States in 2015. And, for the first time, men accounted for more than 40 percent of these aesthetic breast reduction surgeries.

A total of 27,456 breast reduction surgeries were performed on men in 2015, representing a 35 percent growth since 2000.

Said the President of the ASPS, “As plastic surgery is becoming more common and accepted in men, we’re seeing more of them undergo procedures to tighten and tone problem areas, like the breasts.”

He added, “This procedure is often done in younger men who face genetic challenges with the size and shape of their breasts, and when appropriate, surgery can make a big difference in their lives.”

Breast Reconstruction Surgery Statistics

For the past several years the ASPS has spearheaded a national Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign to educate and empower women to make informed decisions following breast cancer diagnosis and mastectomy. And, as more breast cancer patients become aware of breast reconstruction surgery options, the number of breast reconstruction surgeries continues to increase dramatically.

In 2015 breast reconstruction surgeries increased to more than 106,300, which represents a remarkable 35 percent since 2000.

“That’s encouraging, and we hope to continue to get the word out to all women who are facing breast cancer, so they will be well aware of all their reconstructive options from the outset of diagnosis,” said the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

5 Steps to Choosing Breast Implants (Part 1)

5 Steps to Choosing Your Breast Implants (Part 1) –

Getting breast implants is an incredibly personal choice, with many options to consider.

Macomb County breast surgeon Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women chose the breast implants that will best complement their body type, fit their lifestyle and give them the body they’ve always dreamed of.

In this two part article, renowned Macomb County breast surgeon Dr. Ali discusses the 5 factors every women needs to consider when selecting the breast implants that are right for her.

 (1.) Choosing Breast Implant Type

During the patient consult, Dr. Ali will offer guidance on whether saline or silicone breast implant material would best suit the patient’s lifestyle, desired appearance, and body type. Both have their advantages. For example, silicone implants are often recommended for slender patients who don’t have a lot of breast tissue of their own as the implants feel considerably more natural.

Saline implants require a smaller surgical incision and are typically less expensive.

Implant texture is also a consideration, based on the patient’s lifestyle. Smoother implants are softer to the touch, while textured implants are more stationary and firmer.

(2.) Choosing Breast Implant Size

Patients have many choices when it comes to the actual size of their breast augmentation, and often think of breast implants in terms of bra “cup size”.  But surgical breast implant measurements are actually done more precisely by measuring cubic centimeters, or cc’s, which indicate the volume of silicone or saline used. Breast implant size can range from a modest 120cc to a whopping 850cc.

Each centimeter represents one milliliter of silicone or saline. Two ounces of liquid are about 60cc’s in volume. Sizing should take into consideration the patient’s lifestyle, their body type, current weight and overall breast appearance desires.

Remember, bigger breasts are not always better if they compromise the patient’s comfort when performing routine activities such as exercising, playing with their children, etc.

Each patient’s body is different based on their chest and breast measurements, body type, and even the available amount of existing chest tissue available to cover their desired implant size.

Dr. Ali will offer a consultation to help recommend the best implant size. As Macomb County’s top breast implant surgeon, Dr. Ali’s thorough assessment helps ensure that every patient is 100% pleased with the overall breast augmentation outcome.

(3.) Choosing Breast Implant Shape

Size is just one consideration when choosing breast implants. The breast implant shape plays an important part in the overall breast fullness and chest “profile”. Teardrop shaped breast implants follow a woman’s more natural breast shape, while round implants allow a much fuller look, especially in the upper chest area.

Patients who want a “bustier” look often choose round implants that provide a more pronounced fuller silhouette, especially in the upper chest area.

However, other women feel round implants look less natural – and choose teardrop shaped implants for a more contoured profile that more “anatomically” suits their frame. Teardrop implants are shaped to be fuller and feel slightly firmer at the bottom, just like a natural breast.

The highly cohesive silicon material in teardrop breast implants also maintains its shape longer and is less likely to rupture, compared to round implants.

(4.) Choosing Breast Implant Projection & Profile

Female body types and frames vary, so it’s important to understand how projection and profile of breast implants affect the body’s overall balance just as much as the size of the implants do.  A woman’s frame and chest width will help determine if the implant “profile” – which is how far out the breast extends from the chest – should be low, moderate or high regarding.

High profile placement creates fullness in the upper chest, or “upper pole” region. This is quite noticeable in most women and might seem less natural to patients looking for more subtle enhancement.

For breast reconstruction patients, or women who have little remaining breast tissue due to age or breastfeeding, high profile implants may be the only solution. Women with narrow rib cages will also appear more proportionate with high pole placement, as it offers more volume but less width.

For a more natural look, low profile implants create fullness in the lower breast or “lower pole”. This offers a subtler augmentation for women who prefer a natural look – and may also offer a better solution for a woman built more broadly.

Many women believe large breast implants automatically create more cleavage, but if the patient has a naturally wide space between her breasts, implants won’t necessarily create that deep “v” some women desire.

Once Macomb County breast implant surgeon, Dr. Ali has consulted with the patient, he will be able to offer the best recommendation to achieve the most attractive look based on all of these factors.

(5.) Choosing Breast Implant Texture

Finally, the texture of breast implants is also a consideration, each with its own benefits. Textured breast implants are often chosen for their stability in the breast pocket – and less noticeable exterior scarring or “rippling”.

While smooth implants may develop slight under dermis wrinkling, they move more naturally and are softer to the touch.
