Plastic Surgery Trends for 2019

Selfies & Celebrities Influence Plastic Surgery Trends for 2019

Less than two decades ago, plastic surgery was primarily only for the rich and famous, and was the well-kept secret of the youthful appearance for many actors. However, plastic surgery has now become both very mainstream and much more affordable – and no longer just for the wealthy. In fact, the past two years have been record-breaking for plastic surgery, and 2019 is looking to be even busier. Not just actors and socialites are getting plastic surgery any more!

From 2012 to 2018, the average number of invasive and non-invasive plastic surgery procedures increased by 25%. And the patients demanding it are much more diverse in age and income compared to previous generations.

Younger celebrities like Kaley Cuoco and Anna Faris have helped lift the veil of secrecy surrounding plastic surgery – and have openly discussed their plastic surgery procedures. Such transparency has changed the way society now judges cosmetic procedures, which was previously a major barrier for some people considering treatment.

Younger Patients are Getting Plastic Surgery

Clearly, the “selfie culture” is creating an impact on plastic surgery. Society now routinely views people through their online social media appearance, particularly among younger generations up through middle aged adults. This has caused people to become more conscious of their appearance, as photos are posted everywhere online! In fact, 2017 saw cosmetic procedures for twenty-somethings, including injectables and other non-invasive treatments, rise over 80 percent.

Many plastic surgeons, including Macomb County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali, however, caution younger patients who are seeking to improve their selfie image to realistically assess their real-life appearance, not just what may be altered or distorted on social media. Many factors, including lighting and the angle of a photo can enhance or detract from a person’s attractiveness in digital images – so social media photos should never be used as the ultimate gauge of the patient’s true physical appeal.

That said, harsher self-criticism has clearly been driven by online appearances. A staggering 55 percent of plastic surgeons in 2017 reported patients underwent plastic surgery of some type in order to look more attractive in selfies, a doubt-digit increase over 2016!

No More Stigma to Plastic Surgery

Transparency is part of social media’s appeal. The taboos associated with plastic surgery have been minimized with patients who have disclosed and even documented their journey obtaining cosmetic enhancement. Such sharing has empowered others to feel good about enhancing their appearance without social judgement.

Moving into the next decade, plastic surgery has simply become another tool for people to feel good about themselves. Like any other beauty product, aesthetic treatments will be in even greater demand as people desire to look more appealing in “selfies” and “IRL”.  This will also drive the continued development of minimally invasive procedures that focus on enhancing a person’s organic appearance.

“Beauty Matching” Trend Makes Waves In Plastic Surgery

How “Beauty Matching” Is Making Waves In Plastic Surgery –

In our Macomb County Plastic Surgery practice, the term “beauty matching” has begun to make significant waves. The surprisingly common beauty matching trend among plastic surgery patients refers to the practice of a couple both undergoing the same cosmetic procedure(s) at or near the same time. Sometimes the goal is to actually physically look like one another – but for most “beauty matchers” joint plastic surgery is simple an opportunity for the couple to shares the experience of cosmetic surgery.

Many couples who desire to beauty match will book their procedures close together before a wedding or another major life event where they will both be the focus of attention. Others make the choice to beauty match after the fact, when one half of a couple is inspired by their partner’s choice to undergo plastic surgery, and then books their own cosmetic procedure themselves.

In both cases, couples who have undergone beauty matching overwhelmingly report that the experience brought them closer together.

Plastic Surgery Procedures That Can Be Beauty-Matched

As people tend to share many similarities with their romantic partner, many couples also share similar plastic surgery goals. Non-invasive cosmetic procedures like CoolSculpting or Botox tend to the most common for beauty matching. Although almost any plastic surgery procedure has been matched with one’s partner.

Facelifts, eyelid lifts and tummy tucks are popular beauty match plastic surgeries for couples, who both decide it’s time to look younger and more in shape together. This enables the couple to enjoy their new found youthful, attractive appearance together!

What to Know Before Beauty-Matching Plastic Surgery

When undergoing any kind of plastic surgery, it is important to make sure the choice to do so is motivated by the right reasons. With beauty matching involving two people making a major life choice, couples must make sure they are both completely on the same page regarding their procedure. But as long as all parties are in agreement about the desired outcomes of their respective surgeries, beauty matching can be an extremely rewarding and valuable experience for plastic surgery patients.

As long as both patients share equal enthusiasm about their shared plastic surgery experience, plastic surgeons -including Macomb County Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ali- agree that beauty matching is a perfectly healthy and practical approach to getting plastic surgery. By undergoing plastic surgery together, couples are able to offer a unique kind of emotional support that would be impossible without sharing the experience together. And for couples who undergo beauty matching at the same time will also be on the same recovery schedule and be able to keep one another company as they heal.

While beauty matching has proved to be a valuable experience for many plastic surgery patients, it is important to note that the beauty matching experience may not be right for everybody. Couples must take great care not to pressure their partner into undergoing plastic surgery and must be sure both parties want the same thing.

Concerns such as these are particularly vital when considering plastic surgery to accomplish literal beauty matching. While not as common as other forms of beauty matching, couples wishing to undergo plastic surgery to literally look like one another are encouraged to carefully consider all potential consequences before moving forward – even more so than couples undergoing other types of beauty matching.

Why More Men Than Ever Are Choosing Plastic Surgery

Why More Men Than Ever Are Choosing Plastic Surgery –

In the history of plastic surgery, the majority of patients have been women. In recent years, however, plastic surgeons -including Board Certified Macomb County Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ali- have noted an influx of male plastic surgery patients. In the modern era, with increased cultural importance placed on personal image, men now face increased incentive to perfect their physical appearance. And as society continues to embrace plastic surgery as a means of looking and feeling your best, more men than ever are opting for plastic surgery to become the version of themselves they’ve always dreamed of becoming.

Men’s Plastic Surgery Statistics

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has stated that in 2015, the total number of men undergoing plastic surgery had tripled since it’s first year offering statistical reports. And not only has the last decade seen a tremendous surge in plastic surgeries performed on men, the number continues to grow. According to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), 31% of male participants stated that they were “extremely likely” to consider plastic surgery.

Why the Increase in Men’s Plastic Surgery

The ever-present influence of social media on modern society is believed to have played a major role in the increased number of male plastic surgeries. With online photo-sharing being one of the cornerstones of social media interaction, more and more men are turning to plastic surgery for an increased sense of confidence.

But men aren’t just choosing plastic surgery to help snap the perfect selfie. In the modern workforce, where youthfulness is often seen as a highly desirable assent among hiring candidates, many men are undergoing plastic surgery for a fresh, youthful look, ideally resulting in the career boost they’ve been looking for.

As more men than ever consider plastic surgery, Macomb County Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ali takes great care to ensure male patients receive the same level of expert care as his female patients. Equally skilled and experienced performing plastic surgery on men and women, Dr. Ali takes great care to ensure male patients have made the right choice in selecting plastic surgery.

Why Plastic Surgery for Men is Different

While there is a great amount of overlap between plastic surgeries performed on both men and women, the male and female anatomies are obviously very different. As such, plastic surgery procedures on male patients can differ greatly from plastic surgery procedures performed on female patients. For example, while the end goal of rhinoplasty -to improve the shape and functionality of the nose- is the same for both men and women, the surgical maneuvers required to construct a balanced, feminine nose are significantly different those to achieve a strong, masculine nose.

Additionally, as men generally have larger muscles, men typically require larger doses of Botox and other injectables to achieve the desired outcome. Fortunately for male plastic surgery patients in the Macomb County area, Board Certified Dr. Ali has extensive experience performing plastic surgery on men and works tirelessly to meet all of his male plastic surgery patients’ unique needs.

Top Men’s Plastic Surgery Procedures

But while male and female bodies each obviously require very specific, very different types of care, male and female patients both share many of the same desired outcomes of plastic surgery. According to the ASAPS, the top-recorded plastic surgeries of 2017 for both men and women included eyelid surgery, tummy tucks, facelifts, and liposuction.

And in addition to the overlap between men and women undergoing plastic surgery procedures that are easily understood to be gender-neutral, some plastic surgeries that are traditionally seen as being women-only are also perfectly appropriate for male patients. Breast reduction surgery, for example, while predominantly seen as being only for women, is a perfect option for men who are unhappy with excess tissue (so called “man boobs”), providing them the with masculine, defined physique they’re looking for.

insurance plastic surgery

What Types of Plastic Surgery Does Insurance Cover?

Will Insurance Cover Plastic Surgery?

More people than ever are getting plastic surgery to look and feel their very best. One the first question we are asked by patients at our Birmingham cosmetic surgery practice is “Will Insurance Cover Plastic Surgery?” The answer depends upon the type of surgery you are having, as well as the reasons you are having it.

If a plastic surgery procedure is considered “purely cosmetic” (with no medical benefit), health insurance will typically not cover the procedure. However, there are a dozen or so cosmetic surgeries that insurance policies may cover if certain conditions are met.  If a patient can prove medical necessity, all of the surgeries listed below may be at least partially covered by insurance.

“Nose Job” Surgery

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, may be covered by your insurance in cases where the nose’s structure makes it difficult to breathe. An example of this is a deviated septum, which can cause many health problems like pain, nosebleeds, and obstruction of nostrils.

Eyelid Lift Surgery

Blepharoplasty, or an eyelid lift, can be done on the upper and lower eyelids, and for both cosmetic and medical reasons. If it can be shown that the surgery falls into the latter category, your insurance may cover it.

One common medical reason for blepharoplasty is when extra skin puts too much weight on the eyelid, causing obstruction of vision. Insurance may also cover an eyelid lift when vision is impaired by muscles of the upper eyelid stretching too much over time. If insurance coverage is sought, you will likely have to provide medical documentation from an eye doctor.

Ear Reshaping Surgery

Though less common than eyelid surgeryOtoplasty, or ear reshaping surgery, can similarly be covered if the anatomy of the ear impairs hearing. Various anatomical conditions pertaining to position and proportion of the ear can interfere with hearing.

Mole Removal Surgery

Some people love their Moles, also referred to as “beauty marks.” Others prefer they be removed. If a mole is deemed “suspicious,” pre-cancerous, or cancerous by a doctor, insurance typically covers the removal procedure.

Having a mole removal done by a board certified plastic surgeon ensures that there is minimal or no scarring, and that you are not left with any disfigurement.

Breast Surgery

Typically most breast procedures, including augmentation (implants), lifts, and reductions, are considered cosmetic, and therefore not covered by insurance. In cases where the breast surgery is deemed reconstructive (as opposed to solely cosmetic), insurance typically covers all or part of it. An example of this would be following a mastectomy due to breast cancer. In fact, 1998 legislation mandated that insurance cover not only reconstruction of the removed breast, but also for work on the remaining breast for symmetry purposes.

Another reason some insurance companies may cover breast surgery is for relief of severe discomfort. Breast reduction procedures, and possibly a breast lift, would be two such examples.  The weight of some women’s breasts may cause back, neck, and shoulder pain and could warrant medically necessary surgery. As with any insurance claim, sufficient documentation of the condition must be supplied by the woman’s doctors and health care providers. At AMAE Plastic Surgery we do not accept insurance for breast reduction surgery.

Other Plastic Surgery Procedures Covered by Insurance

Other cosmetic procedures that insurance will sometimes cover include, but aren’t limited to, tummy tucks, butt lifts, bunion removal, and varicose veins removal. Again, the most important criteria is that these surgeries are deemed medically necessary and/or are used for pain relief. For the best information about insurance coverage, it’s always best for policyholders to contact their insurance companies directly – and then check with our office to see if we accept insurance for the desired procedure.

General Anesthetic in Breast Augmentation Surgery (Pt 1)

What to Expect with General Anesthetic in Breast Augmentation Surgery

Once you’ve booked your breast augmentation surgery procedure, you’ll probably feel both excited and a little bit nervous! After all, the body you’ve always dreamed of is on its way!

One area some patients are sometimers apprehensive about is the idea of “going under” with general anesthesia. In fact, recent studies report that nearly one in three people worry about the anesthesia more than the surgical procedure itself. Approximately 55% of those undergoing surgery are concerned about general anesthesia.

In this article, double board certified plastic surgeon Doctor Ali explains general anesthesia – to help you understand the process and reduce your concerns.

General Anesthesia is Very Safe During Breast Augmentation Surgery

Thanks to modern pharmaceuticals, and the the latest technologies in anesthetic administration, the risk of general anesthetic complications has decreased more than 90% in the last 50 years.

Complications with anesthesia dropped more than half from 2010-2013. And mortality rates from anesthesia remain inceredibly low, at only 0.03% of all surgeries. And it is important to remember that these numbers all take into account people who were in poor health to begin with, as well as those who’d had surgeries done in emergency situations.

“If you’re approved for cosmetic surgery,” notes Detroit area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali, “chances are you’re in good health already. This greatly improves your chances of a favorable outcome with general anesthetic.”

How to Prepare for General Anesthesia in Breast Augmentation Surgery

Properly preparing for your breast augmentation surgery –and general anesthesia—helps to avoid unnecessary complications.

Be sure to tell your doctor all medications you’re taking, including herbal supplements or remedies. Many of these can interact with anesthesia medications, so it’s crucial that you’re thorough and completely honest with your doctor. You also need to fully disclose any medical conditions or procedures you may now have. or have had in the past.

If you take any ongoing medications, including blood thinners and those for diabetes or blood pressure, Dr. Ali will discuss any changes you may need to make the day of the surgery, as well as in the weeks before.

You will be given specific pre-surgery instructions, which you should follow carefully. Generaly you will be instructed to fast for six hours or more before the surgery to make sure the anesthesia has the desired effect.

Finally, be sure to arrange a ride home for yourself. You will need someone to drive you back after your surgery, so this should be figured out beforehand.

Cost Plastic Surgery

$16 Billion Spent on Plastic Surgery in the U.S. in 2016

It’s no secret that plastic surgery is becoming increasingly popular around the world, and is losing its stigma to boot! Whether it’s a simple filler, a mommy makeover, or anything in between, one thing is clear: cosmetic procedures aren’t going anywhere.

A new study done by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that Americans spent a total of about $16 billion on plastic surgery last year. That’s billion, and that number is only growing. The study very specifically broke down what procedures are popular these days, and about how much they cost on average. It also identified trends around the country in the realm of cosmetic surgery.

Changes in Price

While nearly all procedures’ costs increased from 2015 to 2016, breast augmentation surgery proved to be an exception. The present study found that procedure to have actually decreased nearly 3% last year. If you’re considering getting an augmentation yourself, now may be the best time!

Some notable price differences between 2015 and 2016 were: liposuction and nose reshaping (each up 6%); chemical peels and hyaluronic acid fillers (+5% or more each); and Botox (an increase of less than 1%). Nonetheless, these procedures continue to top the list in terms of popularity!

What Types of Procedures Are Popular and How Much Do They Cost?

The study noted that prices vary for cosmetic procedures based on a variety of factors including:

  • Type of surgery
  • Surgeon’s experience
  • Location of surgeon’s office or hospital
  • Insurance coverage

Furthermore, anesthesia and operating room costs are not typically included in the prices quoted to patients. With these variables in mind, the prices below may not exactly reflect your geographic area, but represent the national averages for certain cosmetic procedures.

The most popular non-invasive treatments, in order of popularity in 2016, were:

  • 7 million injections (like Botox or Dysport); average cost: $385 each
  • 2 million hyaluronic acid fillers: $644 on average
  • 3 million chemical peels: an average of $673
  • More than 775,000 microdermabrasion procedures: $138 each
  • Over 656,000 laser treatments (Intense Pulsed Light): $433 on average

male liposuction

Men, Get Ready for the Beach with Liposuction

Bloomfield Hills, MI – With summer in full swing, you’ve likely been inundated with images of scantily-clad models smiling amidst tropical backgrounds. You may think to yourself, I’d gladly pose in my bathing suit if only I could lose those pesky extra pounds.

If, despite trying to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, you find you still have the problem of accumulating fat, liposuction may be an option for you!

While it’s clear that females get lots of cosmetic procedures done, men aren’t always so keen to try it. After all, any Google image search for “plastic surgery” will likely be catered to women. However, men are getting cosmetic surgery at a growing rate, and that trend is only predicted to continue.

“Every year, we’re seeing more and more men opt for procedures like liposuction,” says Detroit-area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali. “Many men find they can achieve the more sculpted, athletic physique they’ve always wanted. It’s great that liposuction gives us that possibility.”

Even though females get the procedure at nearly seven times the rate of men, liposuction remains the number one plastic surgery for both genders. Men tend to accumulate fat around their abdominal area, chest, hips, neck, and chin. Liposuction offers a great option if you’re looking to rid yourself of those few stubborn pounds that just won’t leave.

What Does Liposuction Entail?

Dr. Ali explains, “The beauty of liposuction is that you can directly target the areas of your body where you’d like to lose fat tissue. With this method, we can make sure your problematic areas are rid of this nuisance once and for all.”

The procedure itself is usually done under general anesthesia, though smaller areas might only require intravenous (IV) sedation. Local anesthetic is usually applied to the targeted spots as well, to prevent blood loss during liposuction. A suctioning machine then uses small tubes called cannulas to literally suck the fat from your body.

Variations on this theme include power-assisted liposuction (PAL) and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). PAL utilizes an electric motor that physically breaks up fat, and UAL uses ultrasound energy to melt the fat. Thus, both of these techniques make the fat removal process easier on patient and surgeon alike.

Are There Other Options?

If you find that diet and exercise alone aren’t enough, liposuction (as described above) may be a good choice for you. However, if you don’t want to commit to such a dramatic procedure, there is a newer alternative available.

“Another wonderful technology available today is called CoolSculpting,” says Dr. Ali. “Unlike other options, CoolSculpting freezes fat cells and lets the body eliminate them naturally.”

CoolSculpting is a minimally invasive procedure and doesn’t require any surgery. The downtime may be less than liposuction, yet the results will be similar: a dramatic reduction of fat that will be noticeable and permanent.

Who Should Get These Procedures?

Liposuction and CoolSculpting aren’t for everyone. If you’re already near your ideal weight, but just can’t lose those last few pounds, these procedures are ideal for you. However, they’re not meant to treat obesity, nor should they be seen as a drastic weight loss option.

As with any other procedure, it’s essential that you contact a professional and find out what your choices are.

“With technology improving all the time,” says Dr. Ali, “you might be surprised at all the options available to you!” Time has allowed cosmetic procedures to become remarkably refined, giving you the best chance ever to have your ideal figure.

If you’re interested in learning more about ways to achieve the body you’ve always dreamed of, schedule a consultation with award-winning, board certified Detroit area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali.

Bloomfield Hills Lip Reductions

Reducing the Size of Your Lips: The Next Trend in Plastic Surgery?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – We’ve all seen images of celebrities with artificially plumped pouts. For years, celebrities and everyday people alike have been getting fillers injected into their lips. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that lip enhancement surgeries have increased by 50% between 2000 and 2016.

However, in a strange turn of events, lip reduction procedures have seen a massive surge, and Plastic Surgeon, Dr. M. Azhar Ali, of Detroit, Michigan, is on the front lines of this recent plastic surgery trend.

Lip Reduction Surgery?

Lip reductions have been popular in Asian countries for quite some time, and most patients who opt for the procedure tend to be in their 20s and 30s.

One of the theories as to why lip reductions are making their way stateside is because of the stigma associated with overdone lip augmentations.

How Are Lip Reductions Performed?

After being prepped for surgery, you will first be placed under local anesthesia. According to Dr. Ali, lip reductions involve the removal of skin from the lips along the dry-wet border of the vermillion. Stitches are then implemented to create a new, thinner lip line.

The lip reduction procedure is performed as an outpatient surgery and takes as little as 15 to 30 minutes to complete per lip, depending on how much tissue needs to be removed.

After the procedure is finished, the stitches will remain for a period of one week, after which they will either dissolve, or Dr. Ali will remove them manually.

Is There Any Pain?

Most patients feel very little discomfort. If there is pain, it is usually tolerable, and over the counter pain medication should help.

Dr. Ali recommends that you eat a soft diet until the swelling goes down, which could take anywhere from a few days to a week’s time.

How Much Does Lip Reduction Cost?

Lip injections cost anywhere between $500 and $2,000 per syringe. However, lip reduction tends to be a bit costlier, running anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000. The cost could vary depending on where you live.

Unlike lip injections, which are temporary and usually begin to dissolve within a year, lip reductions are permanent. You may have to repeat the filler procedure, but you won’t have to repeat a lip reduction.

While lip reductions are seeing a surge, lip injections still tend to be the procedure of choice for celebrities and non-celebs alike.

Is Plastic Surgery a Good Graduation Gift?

Rochester Hills, MI – Graduation marks a time of great accomplishment, and students who flip their tassels are about to embark on a life-changing journey filled with not only self-discovery but also reinvention. In previous years, parents proud of their progeny graduating high school gifted their sons or daughters a car, if they could afford it. Now, more parents are giving their children plastic surgery as a gift, and Detroit’s own Dr. M. Azhar Ali has definitely noticed the trend in his Detroit area plastic surgery practice.

Plastic Surgery for Grads on the Rise

Dr. Ali said, “Plastic surgery as a gift after graduation makes sense. This is a time when the student is going off to college and wants to make the very best first impression. The months following high school graduation and before college begins is also an optimum time to heal following surgery.”

The increase in procedures for younger patients isn’t exclusive to Detroit. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, millennials (those aged 19-34) accounted for nearly 18% of all cosmetic procedures performed last year.

Cosmetic Procedures for Men & Women

One might suspect that primarily women would represent the upsurge in plastic surgery procedures for recent high school grads, but that would be incorrect. While most younger patients are female, and breast implants are one of the most common procedures requested by young women as graduation presents, a growing number of men are also asking for plastic surgery gift certificates.

In fact, cosmetic procedures for men have seen an increase of 100% over the last five years, with liposuction, nose jobs, ear shaping, and gynecomastia surgery being the most preferred.

Dr. Ali said, “Many of my younger female patients spent their entire high school years feeling ashamed of their smaller busts. Breast augmentation gives them a surge of confidence that can serve them in all areas of life. But both men and women are opting for facial procedures like facelifts, eyelid reshaping, and rhinoplasty to give them an edge in college, and in the business world beyond college.”

Dr. Ali has noticed that other procedures are also experiencing a boost in popularity with recent grads, such as laser treatments to treat acne scars, and the new fat-freezing technique known as CoolSculpting.

With college looming, many grads fear they won’t fit in. Still, others want an edge when they head into corporate world with fresh degrees under their arms. Will this trend of plastic surgery as graduation gifts continue to rise?

“I expect to see more procedures performed on grads in the coming years. As technology makes plastic surgery safer and more effective, there is no better time to give your college grad a significant boost of self-esteem, and to start them on the next phase of their life on the right foot.

To learn more about plastic surgery procedures for young college grads, call (248) 335-7200 or email Michigan Plastic Surgeon Dr. M. Azhar Ali, serving the areas of Detroit, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester Hills, Clarkston, Troy, and Farmington Hills.

Turning Back the Clock at 65: Facelifts for Senior Patients

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Shakespeare once wrote, “With mirth and laughter let old wrinkles come.” While fine lines and crows’ feet may be evidence of a long and joyous life, not everyone is so convinced that face creases have to come with age.

For years, the facelift procedure has offered respite from those wishing to reverse the clock on their well-worn facades. A nip here and a tuck there and the person can look twenty years younger, or more.

Now, a recent trend has seen those ages 65 or older choosing this time-honored plastic surgery technique. But many wonder:

Is a facelift safe for senior patients, or is there such a thing as “too old” for plastic surgery?

Plastic Surgeon, M. Azhar Ali, who was awarded Top Doc 2016 by Hour-Detroit Magazine said, “When it comes to age, the number is not as important as the overall health of the patient when considering plastic surgery. A patient is never too old for surgery as long as they are healthy enough.”

Dr. Ali, who serves patients in Bloomfield Hills, Clarkston, and other areas throughout Detroit, has noticed a significant upsurge in senior patients seeking plastic surgery of all types, but facelifts in particular. And the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported that the number of patients 65 or older opting for facelifts, and accompanying procedures like eyelid surgery, has more than doubled in the past 20 years. Much of that increase has been within the past five years.

Dr. Ali sees a clear reason for the increase in senior patients seeking out facelifts and other life-changing procedures.

“People are living longer, and we enjoy a better quality of life as we get older compared to previous generations. It’s understandable that older patients would want to look as young as they feel so they can get the most out of life,” Dr. Ali said.

There are a few considerations for patients age 65 or older that may not be necessary for younger patients considering facial cosmetic surgery.

Guidelines for Facelift Patients 65 Year or Older

Getting a Doctor’s Clearance: Facelifts and other elective surgeries need to be cleared by the patient’s primary healthcare provider before surgery can be scheduled. The plastic surgeon will also need to know about any medications the patient may be taking at the time of surgery.

Avoiding Complications: Complications during and after plastic surgery are rare, for younger and older patients alike. Still, all surgery comes with some element of risk. Therefore, senior patients should be prepared for such risk, as they may not be able to tolerate complications as well as their younger counterparts. The plastic surgeon will discuss any and all complications prior to surgery so that contingency plans can be made, and all concerns alleviated.

The fact is, a facelift is as safe at 65 as it is at 45, and in conjunction with eyelid surgery or other procedures, the patient can indeed begin to feel like an all new and much younger person.

For senior patients interested in learning more about facelifts and even liquid facelifts, call (248) 335-7200 or
