The Rhinoplasty Surgery Procedure

At AMAE Plastic Surgery in Troy, MI, most of our rhinoplasty procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. There are two distinct methods of performing the procedure: Open Rhinoplasty and Closed Rhinoplasty. While both methods involve making an incision in the internal nostril region, Open Rhinoplasty also includes an additional, external incision on the tissue dividing the nostrils.

The skin of the nose will then be “undraped,” allowing for visibility of the nose’s inner structures. Open Rhinoplasty allows for substantial changes to be made to the nose, and is most commonly performed either to correct a previous, “botched” procedure, and on patients whose noses have a particularly challenging anatomy.

During Closed Rhinoplasty, on the other hand, no external incisions are made. With them all instead made inside the nose, Open Rhinoplasty is less likely to result in scarring. However, the results of Closed Rhinoplasty are considerably subtler than Open Rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Recovery & Downtime

While no two cases of rhinoplasty are ever the same, most cases of both open and closed rhinoplasty are followed by at least one-to-two weeks of downtime. Most Closed Rhinoplasty patients experience the most rapid period of recovery within 5 to 6 days, after which time they are free to remove the splint from their nose and resume their normal daily routine.

But although rhinoplasty patients usually experience a relatively quick period of initial recovery, their complete healing process can continue for as long as one to three years. Since the skin of the nose requires time to shrink to its new, underlying framework, the total healing process is longer than many other forms of cosmetic surgery.

But while rhinoplasty patients do experience a recovery period longer than other plastic surgery patients, they generally also experience less pain. While rhinoplasty usually results in a fair amount of bruising and swelling, patients routinely report any pain following the procedure to be surprisingly tolerable. How do I know if I should have my implants placed over or under the muscle?

Generally, you should choose submuscular (under the muscle) breast implant placement if you have saline implants, a smaller amount of natural breast tissue, or a strong family history of breast cancer.

Typically, you should choose subglandular (over the muscle) breast implant placement if you want silicone implants, have a larger amount of natural tissue, or require a breast lift.

How do I know if I need a breast lift?

Dr. Ali will offer you a consultation to determine if you will also need a breast lift at the time of your implants. However, one way to get an idea if you need a breast lift is to stand in front of a mirror and look at your nipples in relation to the natural crease beneath your breasts.

If your nipples sit lower than your breast crease, adding breast implants without a breast lift to remove excess skin will generally make them more saggy – so you will probably need a breast lift.

Should I get round or teardrop-shaped implants?

Dr. Ali will offer you a consultation to help you determine which shape of breast implants are best for you. However, generally, round implants are the most commonly used implants. Round implants are totally symmetric so that their “orientation” (placement location) is always even and symmetric. Round implants are also less expensive than teardrop implants.

Anatomic or teardrop implants, on the other hand, are not symmetrical, with a greater projection at the bottom of the implants than at the top. So in some women, they may have a tendency to rotate causing problems.

Additionally, keep their rounded shape making them look somewhat more natural when you are lying down.

Will I get more cleavage from a breast implants?

Yes, breast implants can give you more cleavage. However, it’s important to that increasing the size of your breasts is not what gives you cleavage. Cleavage is a result of the width of your chest and how close your breasts are together – not how big they are.

If your breasts are set wide on your chest, you will have more fullness after your implants, but not more cleavage. On the other hand, if your body is narrow below your shoulders and your breast implants are placed close together, you can achieve greater cleavage even with a small implant.

What cup size should I choose?

Women tend to think of breasts in terms of cup sizes, because that is how we buy our bras. But cup size is a very subjective measurement: everyone wears their bras differently and every bra manufacturer makes them differently. A woman may be a 36C in one bra and a 34D in another.

Breast implant sizes are actually measured in cc’s. Implants range from 120 to 960 cc, with 300 to 400 cc being the most common range. Implants also differ according to their height and diameter.

Your breast implant size should be proportionate to your body in both size (number of cc’s), projection (height) and width. For example, a 200cc implant may look large enough on a petite woman with a narrow chest, while it would look small on a tall woman with a wider chest area.

However, while SSRI medications can cause a low sex drive, they only represent a fraction of all antidepressants available to patients. Wellbutrin and other non-SSRI antidepressants do not include a low sex drive as a side effect, so if a patient believes their low sex drive is the product of their medication, they should ask their psychiatrist about what alternatives are available to them.

And, SSRIs are not the only medication that can result in a low sex drive. Women taking birth control pills that contain progestin and estrogen also frequently experience a low sex drive. Anyone who thinks their low sex drive is the product of their birth control can talk to their gynecologist – who will typically be glad to discuss alternate methods of contraception. IUDs or low-hormone birth control pills are far less likely to result in a low sex drive.
