boss

What Should You Tell Your Boss When Getting Plastic Surgery?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – You’ve decided to engage in the ultimate form of self-improvement by opting for one or more plastic surgery procedures. But now you’re stressing out because you know there may be downtime as your body heals from the procedure, and you have to work.

What are you going to tell your boss? That you’re getting a breast augmentation and need a couple of weeks to heal fully?

The decision to get plastic surgery is an incredibly personal one and you may not want to tell everyone that you’re having your procedures completed, including your boss.

How do you keep your surgery a secret while also getting the required time off work? After all, some procedures may require you to be restricted to your bed or at least homebound for two weeks or more.

Here are some tips that may be able to help you out during this life-changing time.

Be Bold, but Reveal As Much as You’re Comfortable With

You may feel that you are entitled to tell your boss that you are requesting time off for plastic surgery. But the fact is, you don’t have to tell anyone if you don’t want to.

You can tell your boss that you’re having minor surgery. This will also help to explain why you can’t make any sudden movements or put your body under too much strain once you return.

If probed, simply say that it’s personal, and you’d rather not divulge the reason. If you’re having rhinoplasty or a breast augmentation, the results are going to be noticeable when you get back to work, but again, it’s no one’s business but your own.

Get Creative

If you are undergoing rhinoplasty, you could very well tell your boss that you plan to have surgery to repair a deviated septum. Or, if you’re having a tummy tuck you could tell your co-workers that you fixed a hernia.

Obviously, this will be suspicious if you change your appearance too much, but it’s up to you if you plan to tell anyone what really happened.

Find Co-Workers to Take Up Your Slack

It might help you get the necessary time off if you tell your boss that you found one or more colleagues to take up any slack you may leave behind.

This shows your boss that you care about the company and that you’re invested in the business succeeding in your absence. It also puts less stress on your boss, as he or she will know that work will continue, even in your absence.

Can You Work Remotely?

More people are working from home now than ever before. If you have the type of job that you’re able to do your duties from the comfort of your bed or couch, bring this up with your boss.

You may find that your boss is perfectly okay with you working via your computer or laptop from home as you recover from surgery. You may even open the door to work from home more often, even after your recovery is complete.

Check Your Employee Handbook

Some companies allow a person to take time off for medical reasons. Check with your HR department to see how your employer deals with employees undergoing surgery.

Your company cannot ask about why you need the time of or what surgery you’re having. In some cases, you may be able to collect disability and get extended time off, especially if the procedure is medical in nature, such as a tummy tuck to ease chronic back pain and repair a hernia.

Tell the Truth

If all else fails, it might be best just to come clean about why you need the time off. You may find that your boss has considered plastic surgery or has had one or more procedures completed in the past, and thus may have sympathy for your plight.

Use Vacation Time

The ideal scenario is to use the vacation time you’ve accrued to recover from surgery. You won’t have to ask for permission, and no one will be the wiser about your decision to undergo plastic surgery.

For all anyone at work knows, including your boss, you went to Hawaii and came back looking younger and more attractive.

How Much Time Do You Need?

If you work a desk job with minimal movement, you might get by with taking just a few days off work to begin with. You should then refrain from engaging in heavy activity for at least two weeks. Check with your plastic surgeon about your requirements for successfully healing from your recent surgery.

If you work a job like construction where you’re required to exert yourself, you will want to take as much as two weeks off. You may need six weeks to fully recover from surgery before you can get back to work at full capacity. Even then, you might ask for limited duties until your body has fully healed.

liposuction

Can One Liposuction Session Treat All Areas At Once?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – For many of us, we may notice excess fat in a few areas of the body as we age. No matter how hard we exercise or how much we diet, some areas of our body just seem to retain stubborn pockets of fat. Liposuction is an excellent solution to help get rid of that fat that just seems to linger no matter what we do.

But if you have multiple areas that you’d like targeted, can you target them all in just one liposuction session? The answer is yes, and no.

“Liposuction is a very individualized procedure,” says Dr. Ali, a Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon. “The number of procedures each patient will need to meet his or her desired goals is determined on a patient by patient basis. However, it is possible in many cases to target multiple areas at once.”

The deciding factor of whether multiple areas can safely be targeted during one liposuction procedure comes down to the patient. While there isn’t a maximum number of areas that can be target during one session, there is a maximum on the quantity of fat that can be removed in one session. The general rule of thumb is that surgeons should stay at or below five liters of fat removed.

Patients with smaller builds may be able to safely have multiple areas targeted in one session, while those who are larger in stature may require more than one session to safely and effectively remove the desired quantities of fat.

“One of the greatest benefits of liposuction is that we can use it pretty much anywhere on the body,” says Dr. Ali. “The technique has been perfected so that it causes much less trauma than ever before, however, it is important to remember that there will be swelling and slight soreness at the location of any liposuction. Recovery following liposuction of multiple areas could be longer and more uncomfortable.”

When combining liposuction procedures, it is ideal to keep them to what is termed “aesthetic units.” For instance, one session can easily target the stomach, thighs and hips, and even the bra area.

During your consultation, Dr. Ali will discuss with you your goals following the procedure. Then, he can create a customized treatment plan that will ensure the best results for you.

It is important to note that liposuction should not be used as a weight loss method. Patients should be at or near their ideal weight, but with stubborn pockets of fat that just don’t respond to traditional diet or exercise. If you are interested in reducing fat across your entire body, it would be wise to first begin a weight loss program. Once you reach your desired weight, if you find you have areas that still retain localized pockets of fat, schedule a consultation to learn about the benefits of liposuction.

Permanent Makeup MI

Is Permanent Makeup Right for You?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Do you get tired of having to reapply your eyeliner, or making it through the day and realizing it was smudged? With permanent makeup, you no longer have to spend time applying and reapplying eyeliner, lip line, or trying to sculpt your eyebrows.

“Permanent makeup is gaining a lot of popularity,” says Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Ali. “Through tattoos, women can have the benefit of permanent color enhancement on the eyes, lips, eyebrows and other areas of the face. We also can use tattoos to restore or enhance the areola following breast reconstructive surgery.”

Patients in Dr. Ali’s office can enjoy the benefits of permanently enhanced eyebrows, permanent eyeliner and permanent lip liner.

Do you spend a lot of time trying to shape the perfect eyebrow? Or are you missing fullness in your eyebrows, due to aging, chemotherapy or another issue? Permanent makeup is a great way to enhance and beautifully shape your eyebrows.

A medical aesthetician will work with you to determine the best look for you, and use the technique to either simply fill in areas that are missing hair, or two create dramatically colored brows that can add new expression and definition to your face.

All women know that good eyeliner can dramatically alter the appearance of one’s eyes. But bad eyeliner can leave you looking like a clown or a raccoon. And if you suffer from allergies or limited dexterity, applying eyeliner can be a nightmare. But with permanent eyeliner, you never have to worry about it again. Your aesthetician will work with you to create a look that is natural and that will bring out the beauty of your eyes. Permanent eyeliner can be applied above or below the eye, or both.

Permanent lip liner can improve the definition of your lips by making them appear fuller. The tattoed pigment can make subtle corrections in the shape of the lip, or restore color that has been lost over time. Your aesthetician will work to help you find the ideal color and shape to give you beautiful, natural-looking and fuller lips.

Permanent makeup is like any other tattoo – while it is long lasting, it can fade over time, especially when proper care isn’t taken to protect from the elements. Patients may want to touch up their makeup periodically.

Having permanent makeup applied can be mildly painful, as any tattoo can be. Your aesthetician can use topical anesthetics and analgesics to minimize your discomfort.

Dr. Ali’s team follows the strictest sanitation and safety standards, so you can always be sure receiving permanent makeup at Amae Plastic Surgery Center is safe. Always do proper research before having permanent makeup applied to be sure you receive your treatment from only those with the highest care standards.

If you’d like to learn more about permanent makeup, call Dr. Ali’s office today.

Plastic Surgery Trends to Expect in 2016

Bloomfield Hills, MI – What can we expect in the world of plastic surgery this year? As the number of people seeking out procedures continues to rise, Dr. Ali discusses what procedures he thinks will lead the way.

“More people continue to discover the advantages of plastic surgery,” says the Michigan plastic surgeon. “It’s not just for older patients – there is a procedure for everyone. I think one of the biggest areas we’ll see as a trend this year is an increase in the number of millennials seeking out the plastic surgeon’s office.”

Currently, this generation makes up approximately 20 percent of the population seeking out plastic surgery, but with social media continuing to be a vital part of their lives, millennials will most likely make up a bigger piece of the pie soon.

“The younger generations live their lives out via social media,” says Dr. Ali. “I think we’ll see more young people looking for ways to perfect their looks to portray their best selves online.”

In the same vein, Dr. Ali believes we’ll continue to see an increase in the number of men who visit plastic surgeons.

“Women aren’t the only ones who want to erase the signs of aging,” says Dr. Ali. “Men are finding that to be competitive in the work place, it can help to look younger and more vigorous. It’s not uncommon to find men asking about blepharoplasty, or eyelid procedures, to erase the lines around their eyes that can prematurely age them.”

Dr. Ali expects men to continue to seek out procedures, especially for the face and chest.

The last several years have seen an increase in procedures to enhance the buttocks area. With Beyonce and Kim Kardashian-West dominating magazine covers, the buttocks are a popular area for augmentation, and Dr. Ali expects this to continue, as well.

“Women love procedures such as the Brazilian butt lift to give them the same shape Kim and Beyonce have,” says Dr. Ali. “While I think this will continue, I do think we will see an increase in women wanting a more natural looking shape that is in proper proportion with their bodies. Bigger might be better, but natural-looking is best.”

The natural look also spills over to another area of the body – the breasts. Breast augmentations continue to dominate the plastic surgery world, but surgeons are seeing women opt for smaller, more natural looking sizes.
Dr. Ali thinks there will also continue to be an increase in the number of minimally invasive procedures performed.

“People are realizing that with the amazing array of fillers on the plastic surgery market, they don’t have to go under the knife to look young and refreshed,” says Dr. Ali. “A few simple and virtually pain-free injections can reverse the signs of aging, and it can be done on your lunch break. Fillers fit in to busy lifestyles, where people want to look and feel their best, but don’t want to be out of commission for long.”

One thing is certain, Americans want to look younger and feel their best, and are discovering that a trip to the plastic surgeon can do that. In 2014, we saw the biggest increase in spending on plastic surgery since 2008, with Americans spending more than $12 billion. In 2016, Dr. Ali thinks that figure will be even higher.

Cosmetic Treatments for Under Eye Bags

Bloomfield Hills, MI – When you look in the mirror, are you dismayed by heavy bags that make your eyes look droopy, and your face seem older than it actually is? Discover the power of a blepharoplasty and what it can do for your appearance.

“An eyelid surgery is a wonderful option for patients who have loose or sagging skin around their eyes, or who have fatty deposits that result in puffiness,” says Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Ali. “The eyes are the window to the face, and droopy eyelids can make you look older than you are, and in some cases can even impair your vision. But there’s no need to look worn and tired when you aren’t, and a blepharoplasty is the answer.”

Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids, or both areas, to give a more refreshed and rested look.

In an upper eyelid procedure, Dr. Ali will work to create an incision along the natural crease of the eyelid to conceal any minor scarring. Fatty deposits will then be removed or reposition, muscles will be tighten and excess skin will be removed.

For a lower eyelid procedure, the incision will be made just below the lower lash line. Then, Dr. Ali will remove excess skin, and remove and reposition fatty deposits. However, if Dr. Ali does not need to remove any excess skin, he can use a technique known as transconjuctival blepharoplasty. This incision will be made inside the lower eyelid.

“Following the procedure, there is only slight pain, and the level of swelling and bruising varies from patient to patient,” says Dr. Ali. “Most swelling and bruising will be gone in five to 10 days, however slight discoloration may last a bit longer. Patients will be advised to sleep with their head elevated and to apply cold compresses to alleviate swelling.”

To achieve the best results, it is important to closely follow all after care instructions provided by Dr. Ali and his staff. If you experience pain or irritation, use pain medication, cold compresses and ointment. Your eyes may feel dry after the procedure, so be sure to ask Dr. Ali how to best relieve them.

Until you have completely healed, it is important to practice good sun protection and wear darkly tinted sunglass when going outside.

Because in most cases, blepharoplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure, it is usually not covered by insurance. However, if you are having the procedure to eliminate skin that covers the eyelashes, impeding your vision, it is possible insurance may cover it. Dr. Ali’s staff will be happy to work with you to determine what role insurance may play, and to help you create a payment plan that will work in your budget.

If you’re tired of sagging, droopy eyelids that make you seem tired, angry or older than you are, a blepharoplasty may be right for you. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Ali today.

Could a Neck Lift Help Me Look Younger?

With the winter weather upon us, now is a good time to consider cosmetic surgery, as many activities are indoors and layers of clothing are common. Once the spring arrives with its warmer weather, you will be ready to show off the New You!

If you have been thinking you would like to turn back the hands of time, but are not ready to commit to a full face lift, a neck lift procedure may be right for you. The neck is one of the most pronounced areas of the body where sagging skin, sagging jowls, double chins and muscle banding is noticeable. Many women and men are in general still happy with the appearance of their face, but their neck area is in need of tightening and smoothing. Re-sculpting the neck and the jawline can help present a considerably more youthful appearance .

Good candidates for a neck lift, also called a rhytidectomy, are individuals with good overall health, who are non-smokers, and who have a generally positive outlook. Realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery are also important. As with any procedure, a neck lift will not save a failing relationship or correct other personal problems.

A neck lift procedure involves fewer incisions than a full face lift, however it is still surgery, performed under anesthesia, and a period of recovery is to be expected. A bandage may be placed around your face to provide compression and reduce the chance of swelling and bruising, and a thin tube may be needed to drain excess fluid that may collect under the skin. Swelling and bruising will usually subside within one to two weeks.

You will schedule a consultation in advance of the procedure, and all of your questions will be addressed by your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Dr. Ali prides himself on his compassion and the individualized care he and his staff provide to each patient. If you have been bothered by the changes in the appearance of your neck, contact Dr. Ali today to learn more about the restorative neck lift procedure.

Plastic Surgery for Children?

Frequently people jump to the conclusion that plastic surgery for children is too aggressive a solution. However, there are frequently times that dis-proportionate features or disfigurations are causing both excessive emotional trauma as well as physical pain.

A recent story out of Cleveland chronicled a young girl’s struggle with ears that were overly large and protruding. A common otoplasty operation provided long-term relief from not only pain, but also bullying.

Dr. Ali travels yearly to the Sudan to perform surgery to repair cleft palates in children, teens and adults. This condition can be life-threatening if it results in the inability to eat. But even if not directly life-threatening, infants with this condition may be abandoned or at the mercy of mistreatment so extreme that it can become life-threatening. A common cleft palate repair can address this situation and result in a life of normalcy for a child otherwise facing bullying or outright abandonment.

What’s The Big Difference? Microdermabrasion vs Chemical Peels

With all of the options available to us today in the world of beauty and skin, understanding the procedures and the differences between them can become extremely overwhelming.  Seeking advice or knowledge from a seasoned professional is one of the best ways to determine which procedure is right for you!

Dr. Ali and team want to help you take that first step and have done a comparison of microdermabrasion and chemical peels to help you better understand your options. Please note that no amount of online research should substitute for a professional consultation!

The primary difference between the two procedures is the way they are completed.  Microdermabrasion is performed by an aesthetician under the supervision of a plastic surgeon.  In Dr. Ali’s office, we use a diamond tome device that is attached to suction tubing which removes dead skin cells and makeup, leaving the skin refreshed.

Chemical Peels are performed by the plastic surgeon, all of which are completed using a chemical solution that is applied to the face after cleansing and then removed, taking a layer or multiple layers of the skin off, depending on the deepness of the peel.

With microdermabrasion there is little to no “downtime” after the procedure.  You can generally resume normal activity immediately.  Chemical peels require a bit more after-care as you need to be conscious of the new layer of skin that has just been revealed.  A light peel requires less, but one of the deeper peels may require up to a few weeks of recovery time where strenuous activity, outdoor exposure and product usage are kept to a minimum.

One commonality between the two is that the best results are seen with multiple procedures. It may be difficult to reverse years of damage in a single treatment, so we may recommend a series of treatments. When combined, the two procedures yield excellent results!  By combining microdermabrasion with a light peel and a hydration treatment you can truly hit the reset button on your skin!

Plastic Surgery for Pets: A New Trend?

I recently read an article on plastic surgery for pets, but it’s not what you think. Owners aren’t trying to give Fido or Mimi a cosmetic makeover. Rather, these surgeries are correcting defects that are compromising the pet’s quality of life, in many cases their ability to breathe or see properly.

This got me to thinking how frequently I work with patients who are seeking out plastic surgery to restore or improve their quality of life. Plastic surgery is not necessarily cosmetic; often it is reconstructive or being done to address a “defect” that is having adverse effects on their life. Breast reduction, breast reconstruction, cleft palate repair, brow lift, nose surgery, to name a few, are procedures that are often done for health, not cosmetic, reasons.

If you struggle with some aspect of your physique that could be corrected, don’t hesitate to speak to a plastic surgeon. You may find that plastic or reconstructive surgery is the answer.

Dr. Ali is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Michigan. If you are considering plastic surgery, contact Amae Plastic Surgery Center to schedule in initial consultation. More Info…
