Look Years Younger with Neck Lift Surgery

A Tighter Neck & Jaw Takes Years Off Your Appearance!

One of the first places on a woman’s face or body to show significant signs of aging is the neck. This is because the skin on the neck is not only thinner and more delicate, but it is also positioned in a way that gravity will eventually take its toll. The result is the dreaded “turkey neck” and jowls that age years to one’s appearance.

Perhaps you – like many women – have tried every neck tightening cream on the market without luck. You may have even started wearing turtle necks and scarfs – and thrown away your low-cut blouses. But the good news is that there is a better solution to restore your neck, jaw line, and “jowls” to their once youthful appearance: neck lift surgery.

Neck lift surgery, also known as lower rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure designed to address signs of aging in the neck and jawline area. This transformative surgery can tighten sagging skin, remove excess fat deposits, and correct muscle laxity, resulting in a more defined and youthful neck contour.

In this article, top board-certified Troy, MI area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains the various aspects of neck lift surgery, including the procedure itself, its benefits, and the recovery period.

How Neck Lift Surgery is Performed

Neck lift surgery involves the removal of excess skin, fat, and the tightening of underlying muscles to create a smoother and more toned neck appearance. The patient is typically administered either general anesthesia, but intravenous sedation may be used, to ensure a comfortable, safe and pain free surgery.

Dr. Ali carefully plans and makes incisions behind the ears and/or under the chin, allowing access to the underlying neck structures. The length and placement of incisions will vary depending on the individual’s specific needs, amount of fat and loose skin, and goals.

Dr. Ali will then tighten the neck muscles and underlying tissues, which have become loose or separated with age. This step helps create a more defined neck contour and improves muscle tone. Next, he removes excess fat from the neck area through liposuction or direct excision techniques. This helps eliminate sagging and fatty deposits, enhancing the overall neck appearance. The excess skin is then removed, and the remaining skin is re-draped over the newly contoured neck and carefully sutured into place. Surgical dressings or compression garments are applied to support healing, minimize swelling, and enhance the final results.

Benefits of Neck Lift Surgery

Neck lift surgery offers numerous benefits for individuals seeking to rejuvenate their neck and jawline. Neck lift surgery effectively addresses sagging skin, excess fat deposits, and muscle laxity in the neck area, resulting in a smoother, firmer, and more youthful neck contour. It can enhance the definition and contour of the jawline by addressing jowls and loose skin in the lower face and neck area, restoring a more youthful profile.

Neck Lift Surgery can also correct the appearance of visible neck bands or vertical cords caused by weakened or separated neck muscles, commonly referred to as platysma bands.

Neck Lift Surgery Recovery

Patients typically are allowed to come home the same day of surgery, depending upon the extent of the procedure. You will need someone to drive you home after the surgery and stay with you for a couple days.

Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common in the first few weeks after the surgery. Pain medications may be prescribed to manage any discomfort during this time. Patients are typically instructed to wear a supportive chin strap or compression garment to minimize swelling, provide support to the healing tissues, and enhance the contouring results.

The amount of time needed to take off work after neck lift surgery will vary depending on several factors, including the individual’s healing progress, the extent of the surgery, and the nature of their job. However, the initial recovery period after neck lift surgery typically lasts around 1 to 2 weeks.

Strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks to allow for proper healing. Patients are encouraged to engage in light activities and gradually resume normal daily routines under the guidance of their plastic surgeon.

As with an incision, neck lift surgery results in visible scars, which typically fade considerably and become less noticeable over time. Skilled and experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Ali will strategically place the scars in places where they are the least visibly – including under the jaw and in the hairline whenever possible.

Our plastic surgery team will provide instructions on scar care techniques, such as keeping the incision sites clean and protected from excessive sun exposure, etc.

Neck Lift Surgery vs Non-Surgical Fat Removal & Skin Tightening

AMAE Plastic surgery in the Troy, MI area also offers non-surgical fat removal with CoolSculpting and Kybella – as well as and minimally and non-invasive radiofrequency and laser skin tightening procedures such as ‘Profound’ and ThermiSmooth.

However, it is important to understand that for patients with significant neck laxity, jowls, or “turkey neck” neck lift surgery remains the gold standard.

Non-surgical procedures do not provide the ability to tighten underlying neck muscles, which can become lax or separated with age. Neck lift surgery allows for the tightening and repositioning of these muscles, improving muscle tone and contour. By addressing both skin laxity and muscle laxity, neck lift surgery offers a more complete and effective solution for neck rejuvenation.

Non-surgical also may not adequately address significant skin laxity. Neck lift surgery, on the other hand, involves the removal of excess skin to eliminate sagging and restore a smoother and more defined neck contour. This surgical approach is particularly beneficial for individuals with substantial skin laxity or those who have experienced significant weight loss.

Additionally, while non-surgical skin tightening procedures can provide temporary improvements, the results are often not as long-lasting as those achieved with neck lift surgery. The surgical approach removes excess skin and tightens the underlying structures, resulting in more durable and enduring outcomes. Patients can enjoy the benefits of a rejuvenated neck contour for many years to come.

Turn Back Time with Mini Neck Lift Surgery

Mini Neck Lift Surgery: Look Younger with Less Downtime

Aging is an inevitable part of life that affects every part of the body including the skin. Much of the damage to skin is caused by exposure to the sun’s UV rays – which results in lost elasticity, leading to sagging, wrinkles, and creases. The skin on the face and the neck are the two areas most likely to suffer “photodamage” from the sun.

The appearance of an aging neck can be distressing for many individuals. While Botox, facial fillers, and medical grade skin care products can dramatically improve the appearance of the skin on the face, an aging neck is much harder to treat.

For many patients, mini neck lift surgery at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area is the ideal solution. Also known as a mini-lower facelift, a mini neck lift does what aesthetic treatments cannot – by removing excess skin and tightening lax muscles. Mini neck lift surgery is a significantly less invasive alternative to traditional neck lift surgery that can provide patients with a refreshed and youthful appearance.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 52,000 neck lift surgeries were performed in the United States in 2021. This number has been steadily increasing over the years, indicating a growing interest in neck rejuvenation procedures. Mini neck lift surgery has become an increasingly popular choice for patients who are looking for a less invasive procedure with a quicker recovery time.

What Is Mini Neck Lift Surgery?

A mini neck lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure that addresses sagging skin and wrinkles in the neck area. It is a less invasive alternative to traditional neck lift surgery, which involves more extensive incisions and a longer recovery time. A mini neck lift is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or light sedation. The surgery involves making small incisions behind the ears or under the chin, and then removing excess skin and tightening the remaining skin and muscles.

Mini neck lift surgery can also be combined with other procedures at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area – such as a mini facelift, eyelid surgery, or brow lift – to provide a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. The combination of procedures can address multiple areas of concern, such as sagging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Several techniques can be used during mini neck lift surgery, all depending on the patient’s individual needs. One technique involves making small incisions under the chin and using liposuction to remove excess fat. Another technique involves making incisions behind the ears and lifting the skin and muscles to achieve a tighter and smoother appearance. In some cases, Dr. Ali at at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area may also use one of our advanced laser or radiofrequency treatments to simultaneously tighten the skin and stimulate collagen production.

Mini Neck Lift Results & Recovery

The results of a mini neck lift surgery can be long-lasting, depending on the patient’s lifestyle and aging process. While the procedure cannot stop the aging process, it can provide a refreshed and more youthful appearance for many years. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, can also help prolong the results of mini neck lift surgery.

After mini neck lift surgery, patients can expect some bruising and swelling, which can last for several days. Most patients can return to work and other normal activities within a week, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks. Patients will typically be required to wear a compression garment for a period of time to help support the neck and reduce swelling.

Mini Neck Lift vs Full Neck Lift

Mini neck lift surgery differs from a traditional neck lift in several ways. Traditional neck lift surgery involves more extensive incisions, which can result in a longer recovery time and more visible scarring. In contrast, mini neck lift surgery involves smaller incisions, which are usually hidden behind the ears or under the chin. The smaller incisions mean less scarring, less bruising, and a shorter recovery time.

A mini neck lift, on the other hand, is a less invasive procedure that involves smaller incisions and is mainly focused on tightening the skin and muscles in the neck area – while larger amounts of excess skin are generally removed in a full face lift.

Good Candidates for Mini Neck Lift Surgery

A mini neck lift is best suited for patients who have mild to moderate signs of aging in the neck, such as sagging skin, fine lines, and mild to moderate fat deposits or “jowls”. It is a good option for patients who have good skin elasticity and do not have significant excess skin or fat in the neck area. Mini neck lift surgery is ideal for patients who want to improve their appearance and achieve a more youthful look without undergoing a more invasive surgical procedure.

A full neck lift is recommended for patients who have more significant signs of aging, such as deep wrinkles, excess skin, and fat deposits in the neck area. This procedure is typically performed on patients who are in their 50s or older and have significant skin laxity in the neck area. A full neck lift can provide dramatic results, with the ability to eliminate a double chin, tighten the skin, and redefine the jawline.

The ideal candidate for a mini neck lift is someone who is in good overall health, has realistic expectations about the procedure’s outcome, and has mild to moderate skin laxity in the neck area. Patients who have more significant signs of aging may be better suited for a full neck lift at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area.

Neck Lift Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Neck Lift Surgery FAQs

Perhaps nothing makes a woman or man look older than a sagging neck. Botox and fillers can do wonders for the eyes and lips – and stave off the appearance of aging. But an old-looking neck is much harder to treat. This is because the neck covers a large area and is comprised of skin, fat, and muscles. And while topical treatments can improve the appearance of the skin, they simply cannot tighten muscles.

For this reason, more and more women (and men!) are turning to the surgical neck lift to takes years off their appearance. And thanks to advancements in plastic surgery, neck lift surgery techniques are now less invasive and come with minimal scars and far less downtime.

In this article, renowned Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali answers patients frequently asked questions about neck lift surgery.

Is neck lift surgery common?

Yes, neck lift surgery is a commonly performed cosmetic procedure, and the number performed has likely increased over the years due to advances in surgical techniques and an increasing demand for cosmetic procedures.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, facelift procedures, which often include the neck, have been consistently among the top 5 most popular cosmetic surgeries in the US in for several years.

What causes the neck to sag and look old?

Neck skin sagging with aging is caused by a combination of factors including loss of skin elasticity, decreased collagen production, and decreased skin thickness. Additionally, factors such as sun exposure, gravity, and genetics can contribute to skin sagging. The neck muscles also lose tightness and tone with age, which can cause them to sag.

As people age, the skin on the neck can become thinner and lose elasticity, which can make the muscles in the neck more visible. Additionally, the natural loss of fat in the face and neck that occurs with aging can also contribute to the appearance of neck muscles. Other factors that can make neck muscles more visible include weight loss, poor posture, and even certain medical conditions such as thyroid disorders.

Hormone decline can also contribute to neck skin sagging. The decline in estrogen levels that occurs during menopause can lead to a decrease in collagen production and skin elasticity, which can cause the skin to become thinner and more susceptible to sagging. Additionally, hormonal changes can affect the production of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that helps keep skin hydrated and plump.

What is neck lift surgery?

A neck lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure that improves the appearance of the neck by removing excess skin, tightening underlying muscles, and redistributing fat. This surgery can be performed alone or in conjunction with a facelift and is often used to treat signs of aging such as sagging skin, wrinkles, and jowls.

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and involves incisions made behind the ears and under the chin. The recovery period after a neck lift can vary, but most patients can return to normal activities within a few weeks.

Are there scars after neck lift surgery?

Yes, as with any incision, there will be scars after a neck lift surgery. The type and location of scars will depend on the specific techniques used during the procedure, but incisions are typically made behind the ears and under the chin.

A skilled plastic surgeon can conceal the incisions in the natural contours of the face and neck, but they will still be visible. Typically, the scars will fade dramatically over time, but they will never completely disappear. That is why it is important to choose a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in Birmingham, MI – so that scarring is minimized and well concealed.

What are the different neck lift surgery techniques?

There are several different techniques that can be used for neck lift surgery. While every neck lift surgery is different, depending upon the patient’s unique needs, they can be broken down into 3 general categories:

Traditional neck lift: This technique involves incisions made behind the ears and under the chin, which allows the surgeon to remove excess skin, tighten underlying muscles, and redistribute fat.

Mini neck lift: This technique is similar to a traditional neck lift but involves smaller incisions and a less extensive procedure. It may be suitable for patients with minimal signs of aging.

Endoscopic neck lift: This technique uses an endoscope (a small camera) and small incisions to tighten the muscles and remove excess fat without removing skin.

Liposuction, which involves removing excess fat using a thin tube called a cannula, may be used alone or in conjunction with other neck lift surgery techniques.

The best technique for you will depend on your specific needs and goals, and Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic surgery in Birmingham, MI will help you choose the right option based on your anatomy, skin quality, and the extent of your concerns.

How long is recovery after neck lift surgery?

The recovery period after neck lift surgery can vary, but most patients can expect to take 7 to 10 days off from work. During this time, you will experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with pain medication.

Stitches will typically be removed within 7 to 10 days, and most patients can return to normal activities within 2 to 3 weeks.

However, it is important to remember that every patient heals differently. Please follow your surgeon’s specific instructions for postoperative care, which may include wearing a compression garment, avoiding certain activities, and attending follow-up appointments.

Why is neck lift surgery called platysmaplasty?

Neck lift surgery is sometimes referred to as platysmaplasty, because one aspect of the procedure involves tightening the platysma muscle. The platysma is a muscle that runs from the collarbone to the jawline and is responsible for moving the neck and jaw.

As we age, the platysma muscle can become loose and cause sagging or wrinkles in the neck. During a neck lift, the surgeon may tighten and reposition the platysma muscle to improve the appearance of the neck. By doing so, the procedure can help address issues such as “turkey neck” or “jowls.”

Platysmaplasty is just one aspect of neck lift surgery and may not be included in all procedures. The type of neck lift procedure will depend on the specific concerns and goals of each patient.

Who is a good candidate for neck lift surgery?

A good candidate for neck lift surgery is typically someone who is in good physical health and is bothered by signs of aging in the neck such as sagging skin, wrinkles, fat deposits, or protruding muscles.

Ideal candidates should also be non-smokers, as smoking can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Patients who have significant medical problems or are taking medications that can affect the healing process may not be suitable candidates for neck lift surgery.

Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI is happy to offer you an individual evaluation, to determine if a neck lift is appropriate, and it’s important to have an open and honest conversation with your plastic surgeon about your concerns and goals.

The Best Neck Tightening Treatments for Sagging Skin

 The Best Neck Tightening Treatments

Many women (and men) take excellent care of their skin, and live a healthy lifestyle, but are still plagued with sagging neck skin.  The frustration of a saggy neck is understandable since nothing adds years to one’s appearance like a loose “turkey” neck. And yet all the exercise in the world won’t tighten loose neck skin or muscles.

In this article, West Bloomfield area board certified plastic surgeon Dr. M. Azhar Ali discusses the best treatments for tightening a sagging neck.

Why the Neck Sags with Age

Exploring the best neck tightening treatments involves understanding the underlying causes of a sagging neck. The neck can sag with age due to several factors, including:

Loss of collagen and elastin: These proteins provide structure and elasticity to the skin, and their decline can cause skin to become loose and sag. The hormonal decline of menopause (and andropause in men) contributes to the loss of collagen and elastin.

Gravity: Over time, gravity can pull the skin and fat downward, causing sagging.

Sun damage: UV rays can damage the skin and cause premature aging, including sagging.

Weight loss: Significant weight loss can cause skin to become loose, leading to sagging.

These factors can also contribute to the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging on the neck.

How Hormone Loss Causes Neck Skin to Sag with Age

Hormone loss, particularly the decline of estrogen levels, can cause skin to sag with age. Estrogen helps to maintain collagen and elastin levels in the skin, which provide structure and elasticity. As estrogen levels decrease with age, collagen and elastin levels also decrease, leading to skin becoming thin and less firm.

This can cause the skin to sag, leading to wrinkles and other signs of aging. Additionally, decreased estrogen levels can also lead to a loss of subcutaneous fat, which can further contribute to sagging skin on the neck and other areas of the body.

Neck Tightening Treatments

AMAE Med Spa and Plastic Surgery in the West Bloomfield area offers a wide array of the most advanced neck tightening treatments – from topical skin care to non-invasive treatments, as well as neck lift surgery. The best neck tightening treatment for you will depend on your age, your skin’s condition and type, your desired outcomes, and how much downtime you are willing to incur.

Some of the many neck tightening treatments we offer at AMAE in the West Bloomfield area are:

  • Neck lift surgery
  • Non-surgical skin tightening (e.g. ultrasound, radiofrequency)
  • Profound radiofrequency neck tightening
  • Kybella injections to dissolve fat
  • Botox to relax neck muscles
  • Fillers to restore volume
  • Topical skincare to nourish and tighten skin (e.g. retinoids, antioxidants)

Topical Neck Tightening Treatments

We offer our patients the latest advancements in skincare products in our our West Bloomfield area office – and through our ZO and ALLASTIN online skincare stores

Some skin care ingredients that are known to be effective for tightening neck skin include:

  • Vitamin C: helps boost collagen production and improve skin elasticity.
  • Retinoids: stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture.
  • Peptides: help stimulate collagen production and promote skin firmness.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: helps hydrate and plump skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Niacinamide: improves skin elasticity and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines.

It’s important to keep in mind that topical skincare products may provide temporary improvement, especially in younger patients. However, more significant changes in skin tightness may require in-office procedures – and in some cases neck lift surgery.

Profound Radiofrequency Neck Tightening

Profound Radiofrequency is one of our most popular and effective skin tightening treatments.

Profound Radiofrequency is a non-surgical skin tightening treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten loose skin on the neck. During the procedure, a small device is used to deliver controlled heat to the deep layers of skin.

This heat triggers a healing response in the body, leading to the production of new collagen and elastin, which in turn improves skin elasticity and tightness. The treatment typically takes 60-90 minutes, and results can last up to 2 years.

The safety and effectiveness of Profound Radiofrequency have been demonstrated in clinical studies involving patients with a range of skin types, including those with darker skin tones. And, NO downtime is required after the procedure.

Botox to Improve the Appearance of the Neck

Botox can improve the appearance of the neck by relaxing the platysma muscle, which can contribute to the appearance of bands or wrinkles in the neck. When this muscle is relaxed, it can help to smooth out the neck and create a more youthful appearance.

The procedure involves injecting small amounts of Botox into the muscle, and results typically take several days to a week to become apparent. The effects of Botox typically last 3-6 months, after which the procedure can be repeated as needed.

Fillers to Improve the Appearance of the Neck

Fillers can improve the appearance of the neck by adding volume to sagging skin and smoothing out wrinkles, creating a more youthful and defined appearance.

Some commonly used fillers for neck rejuvenation include hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane, as well as synthetic fillers such as Sculptra and Radiesse. The choice of filler depends on the specific needs and goals of each patient.

Juvéderm Voluma is commonly recommended for adding volume to the neck, as it is designed specifically for the mid-face and cheek area. However, the best Juvéderm formula for the neck will depend on the individual’s specific needs and goals, and a consultation with a licensed medical professional is recommended.

Neck Lift Surgery

Neck lift surgery, also known as platysmaplasty, is the “Gold Standard” in tightening the neck for a more youthful appearance. No topical, injectable, or non-invasive procedure is able to tighten neck skin like neck lift surgery.

Neck lift surgery, involves making incisions under the chin and/or behind the ears to remove excess skin and fat, and tighten underlying muscles. The remaining skin is then re-draped to create a smoother, more youthful neck contour. The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia, and recovery typically takes several days to a week or so.

Patients who have severe neck sagging – including a ‘turkey neck’ or “waddle” – will benefit most from neck lift surgery.  CLICK HERE to Learn More About Neck Lift Surgery.

How to Get Rid of a ‘Turkey Neck’

Neck Tightening Treatments to Banish ‘Turkey Neck’

American writer and filmmaker Nora Ephron – best known romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally – once wrote: “Our faces are lies and our necks are the truth.” And if you are a woman of a ‘certain age’ you no doubt have come to realize that this is indeed the truth.

While lasers, peels, creams, serums, Botox and facial fillers can help keep the years from showing on the face, these treatments simply don’t work on the neck. Not only does neck skin shows age more quickly, it is notoriously hard to treat.

What Causes ‘Turkey Neck’?

The underlying anatomy of the neck — specifically the ‘platysma muscle’— is extremely thin. The platysma is a thin sheet-like muscle that runs from the upper chest and shoulder region to the jaw and the lower face. Unlike other muscles of the body that are deep within the subcutaneous tissue, the platysma sits superficially (near the surface) within the neck’s subcutaneous tissue.

As a person ages, gravity causes laxity from the lower face to extend down to the platysma where the neck muscle becomes apparent through the skin. Additionally, due to gravity and aging, the ligaments that attach the platysma to the underlying structures of the neck loosen. This is what causes the appearance of vertical neck bands.

Further, as one ages, the body loses subcutaneous fat – and the skin stops producing enough collagen and elastin to keep the skin plump, tight, and elastic. This causes the neck to skin to sag – resulting in the dreaded “turkey neck.”

#1. At Home Turkey Neck Treatment: Topical Care

We can’t stop gravity – or turn back the sands of time. But a wholesome diet, good posture, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding sun exposure, smoking and excess alcohol consumption can help delay the onset of turkey neck.

Slouching at the computer or while watching TV – as well as “tech neck” from looking down at your devices – can aggravate a droopy neck. And, while many people remember to apply sunscreen, moisturizers, and serums to their faces, they often neglect to protect their neck skin as well.

Medical grade sunscreens and ‘neck firming’ creams can help ensure that skin is protected and healthy – and help increase cell turnover and stimulate collagen production Our Alastin and Zo Skin Care products contains growth factors, antioxidants, and peptides to help fight sagging and crepiness.

#2. Non-Surgical Turkey Neck Treatment: Radiofrequency Skin Tightening

However, sunscreen and targeted neck creams can only go so far – especially as the years continue to accumulate. Fortunately, AMAE Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in Birmingham, MI offer several minimally invasive in-office neck treatments that can tighten neck skin.

Radiofrequency (RF) skin tightening, is a nonsurgical method of tightening the skin that is very effective on the lower face, jowls and ‘turkey neck.’

Skin laxity actually starts to occur around age 35 to 40 when the quantity and quality of the skin’s collagen and elastic production begins to decline. But radiofrequency treatments deliver thermal energy waves to heat the deeper layer of the skin (dermis). This heat stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which thickens and tightens the skin on the neck.

At AMAE Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in Birmingham, MI we offer several of the most advanced radiofrequency skin and neck tightening treatments: Profound,  Morpheus8 RF Microneedling,  C02RE, and ThermiSmooth.

Only local numbing is needed for these treatments and patients generally start to see an improvement in turkey neck in a month or less. Maximum neck tightening results become apparent when the collagen remodeling is complete, usually around 4 to 6 months after treatment. And because it is the body’s own collagen and elastic tissues that has been stimulated, results are very long lasting.

#3. Surgical Turkey Neck Treatment: Neck Lift Surgery

The most truly transformative procedure for a sagging, droopy turkey neck is neck lift surgery. This is because serums, creams and even radiofrequency can only treat the loose skin – but cannot tighten the neck muscles.  Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali is one of the only surgeons in the Birmingham, MI with the skill and experience to perform this life-changing surgery.

During neck lift surgery general anesthetic is administered and the incisions are usually concealed behind the ear. Extra neck skin is removed and naturally re-draped – and the neck muscles are also surgically tightened from the side. When necessary, an additional incision can be made under the chin to tighten the midline neck muscles which will minimize the appearance of neck bands.

Downtime after neck lift surgery is usually only about a week – and results can last well beyond a decade or more. Because neck lift surgery removes excess skin and tightens muscles it is the gold standard in treating ‘turkey neck’ and can easily take ten or 15 years off your appearance.

8 Plastic Surgery Procedures That Can Make Your Face Look Years Younger

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Are you watching the years pass by every time you look in the mirror? Do fine lines and wrinkles have you looking way past your used by date? Maybe it’s time for a new, younger looking you in the new year.

Dr. Ali offers eight facial plastic surgery procedures at Amae Plastic Surgery Center that can help you look as young as you feel.

From your forehead and neck to your ears and nose, Dr. Ali can transform your appearance to one that is more aesthetically pleasing to every eye.

Here are the eight surgeries Dr. Ali recommends if you don’t quite like one or more aspects of your facial appearance.

Brow Lift

Droopy eyebrows and deep forehead lines can easily be corrected with a brow lift. During the treatment, Dr. Ali will remove some of the muscle and tissue, then raise your eyebrows. This has the effect of smoothing the forehead while minimizing frown lines.

In the past, this procedure involved a large incision across the scalp. Thanks to more advanced techniques in modern plastic surgery, Dr. Ali will only need to make two tiny incisions behind the hair line. These scars are completely invisible once healed.

In some cases, this procedure is performed in conjunction with eyelid surgery.

Eyelid Surgery

Are your eyelids beginning to bulge or wrinkle? Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can correct excess skin and fat, which contributes to the effect known as bags under the eyes.

During treatment, Dr. Ali will tighten your eyelid skin while preserving and redistributing the fat around your eyes to achieve a more natural appearance.

Facelift

Age can wreak havoc on our faces. We develop cheek folds, saggy cheeks (jowls), and a wrinkled neck. To erase years from your face, Dr. Ali recommends a facelift.

A facelift involves the removal of excess tissue and the tightening of your facial skin. In some cases, your face can be repositioned without external scarring. Most patients who receive facelifts are between 40 and 60 years of age, however even those in their 70s and 80s have experienced excellent results.

Necklift

Age affects the face negatively, but our necks get it the worst. A wrinkled neck is hardly attractive. To achieve a smoother, more defined neck area, Dr. Ali suggests a necklift.
During a necklift procedure, excess fatty deposits will be removed and the skin stretched to create a smoother, more defined neck area.

In many cases a necklift will be performed in conjunction with a facelift. The procedure takes around 2.5 hours and you’ll be home the same day.

Facial Reconstruction

For the correction of large, unsightly scars or facial wounds, Dr. Ali recommends scar revision or skin grafting.

Skin revision involves the meticulous practice of changing the direction of the scar so that it blends with your normal skin crease.

Skin grafting is one of the most common reconstructive procedures. The treatment can cover large wounds, which would otherwise take months to heal.

Dr. Ali will harvest skin from another area of your body (called the donor site) and will then apply that tissue to the wound (recipient site). The newly applied tissue will reestablish blood supply by stimulating the growth of fine blood vessels also known as capillaries. The process takes about a week to complete and can help you heal much quicker with a focus on aesthetics.

Nose Reshaping

Rhinoplasty also referred to as a “nose job” can alter the size, shape, and, in some cases, the function of your nose. In other words, not only can Dr. Ali make you happier with your nose, but he can correct breathing problems caused by a deviated septum or by providing support to certain areas of your nose.

Dr. Ali will either make incisions inside of the nose (called “closed rhinoplasty”) or across the columella, the strip of tissue separating the nostrils (called “open rhinoplasty”). The nose will then be built up to achieve a more aesthetically-pleasing form and, in some cases, improve your breathing.

Cheek Implants

With more aesthetic facial contours, you can look like a whole new person. Dr. Ali uses facial implants to provide your face with a more harmonious balance. Cheek implants are safe, effective, and can help you finally feel great about the way you look.

Ear Surgery

Deformed ears can detract from your appearance. Otoplasty or ear surgery can make your ears appear more symmetrical and balanced, leading to improved aesthetics without affecting your hearing one bit.

It’s a new year. Don’t you think it’s also time for a new, younger looking you? Contact Dr. Ali today at Amae Plastic Surgery Center and ask about one or more of the above procedures to turn back the clock in the new year.

Prepare to Kiss That Turkey Neck Goodbye

Rochester Hills, MI – Individuals who are self-conscious of their “turkey necks” can now rejoice. A highly-decorated plastic surgeon in Rochester Hills, Michigan has the sagging neck solutions they have all been searching for.

“I have patients come into my practice all the time looking to tighten their sagging necks,” says Plastic Surgeon Dr. M Azhar Ali, who operates AMAE Plastic Surgery Center. He adds, “Luckily for them, there are quite a few solutions that we offer.”

Millions of Americans suffer from an unflattering neck area. This wrinkled or sagging skin can cause a person to look much older than his or her chronological age. It can also give off the appearance of being heavy, even if the person is of average weight.

Just because a person has sagging skin around the neck does not mean he or she has to live with it, however.

Dr. Ali says that with just one or more cosmetic procedures, a person can learn to be proud of their neck instead of constantly hiding it from the world.

What Causes Turkey Neck?

In some cases, turkey neck can be caused by significant weight loss. The fat may have disappeared, but the skin no longer has the elasticity to shrink back into place.

In other cases, the condition is hereditary. If one or both parents suffered from a sagging, wrinkled neck, chances are their offspring will too.

The condition can also be a product of age. Unfortunately, the neck is the one area that gives away how old we look, despite the appearance of the rest of our body.

No matter what caused the excess and/or sagging skin to form around the neck area, there are some practical solutions. Most of them involve minimally invasive surgery and short recovery times, which is great news. The patient could be back to work in short order looking and feeling more confident and self-assured.

Here are the procedures that have helped others say goodbye to their turkey necks for good.

Neck Contouring

This is a surgical technique that produces a slimmer, smoother neckline. In some cases, the procedure is combined with others that also shape the chin and tighten the skin on the face.

Here are the procedures that are typically performed during a neck contouring operation.

Neck Liposuction

For patients that suffer from an unsightly double chin even though they are not overweight, Dr. Ali recommends this simple procedure.

Neck Liposuction removes the excess fat, thus slimming the neckline. Dr. Ali recommends this procedure for younger patients (20’s to 50’s) whose skin still retains a certain amount of elasticity.

When skin has lost its elasticity, neck liposuction, unfortunately, won’t do much good. The idea is to have the skin contract evenly after the surgery is complete. Otherwise, the skin around the neck will merely sag, and the patient will be back to square one.

The good news is that this procedure is a quick one. Using nothing more than a local anesthetic, the cosmetic surgeon will make one or two tiny incisions (usually concealed under the chin or behind the ears) whereby the excess fat is removed.

The patient will then wear a supportive chin strap for a few days and be back to work within a week in most cases (returning to full activity within the span of two weeks).

The result is a newly refined jawline and a naturally contoured chin and neck.

Neck Lift

Patients that don’t have excess neck fat, but still experience sag, may benefit from neck lift surgery.

There are essentially two types of neck lifts. Cervicoplasty is the procedure that is used to remove the excess skin around the neck. Platysmaplasty will tighten loose neck muscles.

In some cases, the plastic surgeon will perform both procedures for a more defined neck area.

Unlike neck liposuction, neck lifts are performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. A small incision is placed behind each ear. If the case warrants it, a third incision may be placed under the chin.

It is through these cuts that the cosmetic surgeon will tighten the neck muscles and remove the excess skin.

Recovering from a neck lift depends on the patient’s state of health and the extent of the procedure. In most cases, the individual will be able to return to work within two weeks.

It is common for the person to feel tightness in the neck area post-surgery and bruising and swelling may also occur. These symptoms are normal and will diminish with time.

When the patient does fully recover, he or she will be able to look in the mirror and enjoy a smoother neck without all the wrinkles and creases.

“This tends to boost the person’s self-esteem considerably,” says Dr. Ali.

Have Realistic Expectations

While these neck contouring procedures can help patients look years younger and more attractive, they are not anti-aging cures. No amount of surgery can stop the aging process, but aging can be slowed by choosing a qualified cosmetic surgeon.

For individuals who are thinking about one or more operations for what is commonly known as “turkey neck”, or for other parts of the body, such as the face, chin, and nose, be aware that these procedures can be combined with others to improve one’s appearance and self-esteem.

What Causes a Doublie Chin?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – When you look in the mirror, are you embarrassed by what looks like a double chin? Do you try to find ways to hide it in pictures? Before discussing how to get rid of your double chin, it’s important to understand what causes it.

“While a double chin may make your face look heavier, a double chin isn’t an indication that you are fat,” says Dr. Ali, a Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon. “Gaining weight doesn’t always mean you’ll get a double chin, and likewise, losing weight doesn’t necessarily mean your double chin will go away. Weight gain can lead to the appearance of a double chin, but there are other factors, as well.”

A double chin is caused when excess fat and loose skin gather in the neck area, leading to the appearance of a fuller, almost second chin.

Aging can lead to the onset of a double chin. Our muscles weaken as we age, which allows for the fat deposits to hang lower than they otherwise would.

For some people, their double chin is simply the result of their genetics, and therefore almost impossible to avoid. And some people just may have more fat cells in their chin region, causing a double chin even though they may be younger and on the slimmer side.

The way your bones and muscles form can also lead to the appearance of a double chin, along with facial expressions we make. Some facial movements can actually lead to structural changes in our appearance over time, leading to the appearance of a double chin.

But if you are embarrassed by your double chin, there are great ways to minimize the appearance and bring your face to proper proportions.

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures, and can be a great way to remove the appearance of a double chin, if you don’t also have excess skin involved. Because the neck doesn’t really respond to exercise, no amount of dieting or working out may be able to remove those stubborn fat deposits of the double chin.

Liposuction can be used to remove the excess fat deposits, and contour the chin to provide the patient the desired look.

If your double chin is accompanied by sagging, loose skin and/or thick neck bands, a neck lift will be a better option for you.

Incisions will be placed under the chin and around the ears. The excess skin will be removed, and liposuction can also be used to remove the fatty deposits. Dr. Ali will tighten the neck muscles to ensure the most beautiful and natural looking result.

“Neck lifts are a wonderful way to get rid of double chins, and provide patients with the look they want,” says Dr. Ali. “The patient will be on bedrest for about 2 days following the procedure, and will have a bit of swelling and bruising in the first week. But by six weeks out, normal activities can be resumed, and patients love to show off their news, slimmer looking neck.”

If you have a stubborn double chin that you’d like to get rid of, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ali today.

How To Get Rid of Your Double Chin

Bloomfield Hills, MI – When you look in the mirror, are you embarrassed by the sagging, wrinkled appearance of your neck? Even without other changes to our bodies, our necks can make us look older or even heavier than we actually are. But a neck contouring procedure can correct that, shaving years and even pounds off of your look.

“A double chin is the result of excess fat and loose skin that builds up on the neck,” says Dr. Ali, a Michigan plastic surgeon. “It can happen as we age, or after we gain and lose weight, or due to stress. A neck lift and contouring is a great way to remove the fullness associated with a double chin, especially in patients who aren’t ready for a full facelift yet.”

When your neck simply doesn’t match the rest of your appearance, a neck lift is a great solution. During the procedure, your surgeon will remove excess skin, alter and tighten the neck muscles, remove excess fat, and for some patients use Botox or other injections to address additional issues.

If your problem is that your neck looks more like a turkey’s waddle, your surgeon will cut under your chin or behind your ears to access the platysma muscle. Some of the muscle may be removed to achieve the ideal look. Botox injections can be used in conjunction with the procedure to relax the parts of the muscle that create a banded or full look in your neck.

If you also have liposuction performed, your surgeon will make a small incision just below your chin, and use the cannula to remove excess fat.

Excess skin can be trimmed and lifted into a more ideal place, and then secured with either tissue glue or stitches.

Some patients may only require one of the above mentioned procedures to achieve their desired look, while others may require multiple. It’s important to discuss your aesthetic goals with your plastic surgeon before your procedure so he can provide you with the look you desire.

Younger patients, those in their 20s to 50s, may only need liposuction to get their desired look/ If you have good skin elasticity, your skin will contract smoothly, providing a beautiful result following the liposuction.

If you have a more extensive neck lift surgery, you’ll need about two weeks to fully recover, however an exact recovery time depends on the individual. Your neck will feel tight and there will be some bruising and swelling. This is all normal and the after-effects of surgery will subside within a few weeks.

It is important to follow all of your surgeon’s after-care instructions to ensure the best result.

Neck lift surgery can reduce sagging skin, remove excess skin, smooth out wrinkles and creases, and improve the appearance of neck bands. Best of all, the results will look natural and will age well with the patient.

If you’re tired of looking older than you are because of your double chin, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ali today.

Could a Neck Lift Help Me Look Younger?

With the winter weather upon us, now is a good time to consider cosmetic surgery, as many activities are indoors and layers of clothing are common. Once the spring arrives with its warmer weather, you will be ready to show off the New You!

If you have been thinking you would like to turn back the hands of time, but are not ready to commit to a full face lift, a neck lift procedure may be right for you. The neck is one of the most pronounced areas of the body where sagging skin, sagging jowls, double chins and muscle banding is noticeable. Many women and men are in general still happy with the appearance of their face, but their neck area is in need of tightening and smoothing. Re-sculpting the neck and the jawline can help present a considerably more youthful appearance .

Good candidates for a neck lift, also called a rhytidectomy, are individuals with good overall health, who are non-smokers, and who have a generally positive outlook. Realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery are also important. As with any procedure, a neck lift will not save a failing relationship or correct other personal problems.

A neck lift procedure involves fewer incisions than a full face lift, however it is still surgery, performed under anesthesia, and a period of recovery is to be expected. A bandage may be placed around your face to provide compression and reduce the chance of swelling and bruising, and a thin tube may be needed to drain excess fluid that may collect under the skin. Swelling and bruising will usually subside within one to two weeks.

You will schedule a consultation in advance of the procedure, and all of your questions will be addressed by your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Dr. Ali prides himself on his compassion and the individualized care he and his staff provide to each patient. If you have been bothered by the changes in the appearance of your neck, contact Dr. Ali today to learn more about the restorative neck lift procedure.
