Why More Men are Considering Plastic Surgery
Why More Men Are Getting Plastic Surgery
Originally, the vast majority of plastic surgery patients were women. But the number of men who are now undergoing cosmetic procedures is surging.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the total number of cosmetic surgical procedures performed among men prior to the pandemic was almost one and a half million annually. That figure now represents close to 10 percent of the total number of cosmetic surgical procedures. And while 10% may not sound like a lot, it is triple the number of men undergoing plastic surgery in 1997.
In a survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS)in June of 2020, almost one third of the men questioned said that they were “extremely likely” to consider a cosmetic procedure in the future. Almost 50% of the men surveyed said they would consider a cosmetic surgery treatment to feel more confident. And 25% said that they would undergo plastic surgery because they wanted to “look younger” in order to remain competitive in the workplace.
What to Look for In a Men’s Plastic Surgeon
Obviously, men’s anatomy is very different than a woman’s. Additionally, male skin is thicker than female skin, and men have more oil glands, as well as a higher ration of muscle to fat. For this reason it is extremely important for a man who is considering plastic surgery to find a surgeon like Dr. Ali who is specifically trained and experienced in working with male anatomy.
The details and nuances of plastic surgery procedures can often differ dramatically between the sexes. For example, when performing rhinoplasty (nose job) surgery, a small “turned up” nose may meet certain ideals of feminine beauty. But a larger, stronger more “masculine” nose shape is necessary to look balanced and attractive on a man’s face.
A similar example of the divergence of treatments between men and women is Botox injections. Most men will require larger doses of Botox to get the same effect as a woman, since male muscles are generally much larger and stronger.
Dr. Ali has helped thousands of men in the Birmingham, Detroit, and Troy, MI areas look and feel like younger more attractive versions of themselves with plastic surgery procedures.
Most Popular Men’s Plastic Surgery Procedures
According to 2017 statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the most popular plastic surgery procedure for men is liposuction. This is then followed in popularity by eye-lift surgery, male breast reduction, tummy tucks, and face-lifts.
Non-surgical cosmetic treatments to which men gravitate are led by Botox – the world’s number one cosmetic procedure. Facial fillers are also growing in popularity among men – especially with the addition of new facial fillers – such as new Juvéderm Volux – that are tailored to a man’s needs. Volux, for example, is specifically formulated to add shape, volume and definition to the chin jawline – making very popular among our male patients. And, Kybella injections can banish a man’s double chin non-surgically, and without downtime.
Plastic Surgery Works When Nothing Else Does
Many men try to enhance their bodies – and reduce problem areas – by working out, and dieting or eating healthy. But in many cases, nothing works because fat placement on the body is often the result of genetics, aging and/or hormone decline.
But cosmetic surgery such as liposuction, a tummy tuck or male breast reduction, can permanently remove stubborn fat that nature has cruelly placed in unwanted areas. These men’s plastic surgery procedures can get rid of fat almost anywhere on the body – including hereditary or hormonal fat that does not respond to diet or exercise.
We have also helped hundreds of men lose unwanted fat and get the slim toned body they want with non-invasive CoolSculpting. This revolutionary, non-surgical procedure can reduce fat by up to 24% – with no exercise, no dieting, and no downtime.
