Ask the Doctor: Is Radiofrequency Vaginal Rejuvenation Safe?
ASK DOCTOR ALI:
What is Radiofrequency Vaginal Rejuvenation and Is it Safe?
Fast, comfortable, non-surgical radiofrequency skin tightening treatments – boasting zero downtime, and no scars – have been a popular cosmetic treatment for faces for more than 15 years. Now the same radiofrequency skin tightening used since 2001 to make people look younger is gaining widespread recognition for making vaginas act and feel younger.
The Science of Radiofrequency Vaginal Rejuvenation
Radiofrequency is a common type of energy found in many aspects of daily life – from WiFi signals, xrays, radio and TV waves, and microwave ovens. Like any type of energy, radiofrequency is measured in “frequency,” or wavelengths per second.
The radiofrequency used in skin tightening is around 450 kilohertz, which is on the very low and “slow” end of the radiofrequency range. For example the radiofrequency (RF) of skin tightening treatments are more than 1 billion times slower/lower than an Xray. In other words, RF energy is very, very low when compared to the whole spectrum of electromagnetic energy.
How Radiofrequency Vaginal Rejuvenation Tightens Skin
Like any form of energy, radiofrequency produces heat. RF vaginal rejuvenation treatments work by heating the skin’s deeper layers to stimulate new collagen and elastin production, and encourage new cell regeneration. This in turn helps skin lining the vagina to become firmer, thicker and more youthful.
The advantage of using radiofrequency to heat vaginal tissue – as opposed to using the higher frequency lasers – is that the lower frequency of radiofrequency can safely penetrate to a deeper level. In other words, while high frequency lasers improve the skin’s surface, radiofrequency penetrates the skin to improve skin tone and structure, even lifting tissues.
Studies Show Radiofrequency Vaginal Rejuvenation is Safe
Everyone is exposed to low levels of radiofrequency energy every day, from cell phones, TVs, WiFi, and more. Because it’s used for so many things, RF has been extensively studied for many decades to determine its impact on humans. However, there is no conclusive evidence that radiofrequency exposure increases cancer risk in humans, even in those individuals who are regularly exposed to higher amounts of radiofrequency on their jobs.
The main known risk of radiofrequency exposure is the potential for burns from the thermal heat RF generates – but ONLY if it is administered in high doses without proper protection. However, the radiofrequency used in FDA-approved non-surgical tissue tightening is highly controlled and administered at very low doses for complete safety.
If the RF vaginal rejuvenation procedure is performed correctly by a trained medical professional, there should be no risk at all of burns or even discomfort from the heat. The radiofrequency in vaginal tightening treatments is highly controlled, and the equipment allows the doctor to closely monitor and control the device during treatment to ensure that the vaginal tissue reaches the optimal temperature to stimulate new collagen production and cell regeneration – without ever overheating the vagina.
Many clinical studies have demonstrated the excellent safety profile of radiofrequency for facial skin tightening as well as vaginal rejuvenation.
