How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost? (Part 1)

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost? (Part 1)

Asking how much breast augmentation costs is kind of like asking how much it costs to go out to dinner. The quality of the ingredients and the skill and training of the chef will affect how much you pay for your meal.

Similarly, different types of implants and different levels of breast surgeon experience will affect the total cost of having breast implant surgery.

And while you may be happy to grab McDonald’s for dinner to save a few bucks, breast implants are not something on which you want to cut corners.

The better the quality of the implants and the surgeon, the better your breasts will look, the longer they will last. And a better surgeon also means a lower risk of complications such as infection, pain and scarring.

In this two part article we look at the factors that affect breast implant prices.

Breast Augmentation Materials: Comparing Apples to Oranges

To begin with breast implants can be filled with either saline or silicone. Saline implants are typically one to two thousand dollars cheaper than silicone breast implants.

However, saline implants are generally less popular than silicone implants because they typically do not feel as “natural”.

In the United States the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved five silicone gel-filled breast implants. These also have different “features” that may affect price.

Breast Augmentation Surgeons: Rembrandts vs. Bad Artists

A diner cooked by Emeril or Wolfgang Puck is going to cost more than a meal made by a line cook at a diner – but there is a huge difference in quality.

A more experienced and qualified plastic surgeon is going to be bit more expensive than someone without extensive credentials – but the small added cost is more than worth it to achieve beautiful results without any complications.

Selecting a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon like Dr. Ali who performs hundreds of breast augmentations each year ensures you will have beautiful breasts for years to come. Going to an unskilled surgeon, or someone who isn’t board certified, can result in “plastic surgery disasters” such as lumpy, irregular breasts, infections, external and internal scarring

Total Cost of Breast Implants

At AMAE Plastic Surgery, our prices for saline breast implants begin as low as $5000 complete (including implants, surgeon’s fee, anesthesia and surgical facility). Prices can then go from $5000 to $10,000 depending on the type of implant chosen, as well as the type of surgery, type of incision, placement of the implants (above or below muscle.)

However, only during a consultation with a qualified board certified breast augmentation surgeon will you be able to figure out which type of implant and augmentation procedure is best for you specifically, and how much it will cost.

Dr. Ali offers a no-pressure, no-obligation consultation and examination to help you determine which breast augmentation is right for you, as well as a sense of the financial investment you need to make.

Our office staff can then help you budget, offer financing options if needed and – in cases of medical need – submit claims for your breast augmentation to your insurer.

But I Thought Breast Augmentation was Cheaper!

You may have seen figures floating around on the Internet that say things like: “The average cost of breast augmentation surgery is $3,718, according to 2017 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.”

This is a very misleading figure, because this low figures does not include anesthesia, use of the operating room, and other necessary expenses. Since you obviously cannot undergo a breast implant procedure without anesthesia or an operating room – the figures you see on the internet are not the total cost.

Also, where you live affects the “cost of living” – including the cost of breast augmentation surgery. Just like houses, breast implants are more expensive in Malibu, California than they are in Mobile, Alabama. So when you see “national averages” they include both the high and low end of the spectrum.

Michigan is right about “in the middle” of the national cost scale for breast augmentation – while still offering the same celebrity-quality surgical procedures as those found in Hollywood & Beverly Hills.

Will Insurance Cover My Breast Augmentation Surgery?

In cases of “medical necessity” insurance generally will cover breast augmentation surgery. And breast reconstruction procedures after a mastectomy or lumpectomy must be covered by your health insurance plan – according to The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998.

However, when surgery is purely an elective cosmetic procedure, health insurance typically does not cover the cost of the surgery.

Is Financing Available for Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Yes! A variety of financing options are available for those situations where insurance does not cover breast augmentation.

We work with four major medical financing companies to help you afford your breast augmentation surgery.

Breast Augmentation Testimonial & Case Study

Breast Augmentation Testimonial & Case Study –

Breast Augmentation Case Study

In April of this year (2018) Shannon Lynn M. came from Southgate to our Birmingham, MI plastic surgery office in search of help with a “botched” breast augmentation that was performed 4 years ago by another doctor.

As with many of our patients, Shannon was referred to us by a physician, who knew of Dr. Ali’s stellar reputation and excellent results in breast augmentation surgery and revision.

Unfortunately, Shannon had undergone breast augmentation surgery in 2014 at the hands of doctors who were NOT board certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Ali. Shannon had heard this doctor make claims on a radio advertisement, and like many women she fell for his “hype”.

Shannon’s unfortunate results highlight the extreme importance of checking your plastic surgeon’s credentials, and making sure they have acheived beautiful breast augmentation results in hundreds of surgeries.

Shannon’s first surgeon had implanted breast implants that were too large for her frame. Additionally, he had placed them improperly in her chest. Implants that are too large and/or improperly placed can lead to pain as well as deformity. And that is what happened to Shannon.

When she returned to the same doctor, as well as a second doctor, both misdiagnosed her discomfort as “capsular contracture.” Rather than admit their mistake, Shannon was quoted a fee of an additional $9000 to correct the problem…which she could not afford.

After suffering with these improperly implanted breasts, Shannon was referred to us in April 2018. In June of 2018 Dr. Ali performed a revision breast augmentation, in which he was able to correct the “botched” procedure and reposition the breasts.

Two months later, Shannon has completely healed and she is thrilled with the look, feel and comfort of her breast augmentation revision by Dr. Ali.  We are so glad that Shannon found us, and we are as thrilled as she is with the final results!

Read the testimonial, below, to hear what Shannon has to say about her breast augmentation in her own words.

Breast Augmentation Testimonial

Amazing, words can not describe the gratitude I have for Dr. Ali and his staff!

I had a breast augmentation back in 2014, by one of those big shots that put their names all over the radio… Worst mistake of my life! I was botched, implants bigger than I wanted were put in, the doctor pretty much shoved them into my chest. It was a horrible surgery and experience! A month goes by, and my implants raised even higher, where the top of my implants were at my collar bone, and they were completely different looking. This doctor blamed me for what happened, and told me I had capsular contraction. Now given that I spent 8k on the surgery, they wanted an additional 9k for the surgery to correct it, plus I paid 100 dollars every 2 weeks to get steroids and a laser treatment that was unnecessary.

Knowing I couldn’t afford the surgery, about one year later I visited another big named doctor that was advertised everywhere. Who belittled me for the chest that I had and how I would almost have to go down 200cc (I’m a 425cc) and I would have to have a surgery for capsular contraction as well.

These Doctors are not plastic surgeons come to find out! One is an ear, throat, and nose doctor, and the other being a doctor of general medicine. Who just took classes online to be certified to do cosmetic surgery. I wish I would have known, so educate yourselves and do your homework before having any kind of surgery.

From someone who has had an awful surgery/experience, I am telling you Doctor Ali is the best!

I saw Dr. Ali in April of 2018 (4 years with awful implants), from the moment I walked into his office I was very comfortable and knew I found an amazing doctor. When I had my consolation with him, he knew right away it wasn’t capsular contraction, but a botched surgery. The fact that he sympathized with what I have had been through, and didn’t just try to make it just about the money was comforting. He told me it was going to be a challenge but he would make them look as good as he possibly could.

I had my surgery this previous June, and he did everything and beyond that he told me! I was able to keep my original implants instead of buying new ones, and he made them look so natural and perfect in my eyes! The hospital he works out of was amazing, the staff who works alongside him, and his knowledge and bedside manner is what we all want when undergoing a surgery! I am beyond grateful with the outcome and experience!

Which Celebrities Admit to Breast Enhancements?

Celebrity Breast Enhancement Quotes

If you’re considering having breast enhancement surgery, you’re in good company. Plenty of Hollywood’s most famous celebrities have already done so – to improve their careers and their self-esteem.

Today we’ll take a look at some of the entertainment industry’s most outspoken advocates of breast implant surgery. Some of them may surprise you!

Anna Faris on Her Breast Enhancement

When faced with the decision of whether or not to proceed with breast enhancement surgery, adorable actress Anna Faris stated it all came down to one basic question: how she would look in a bikini.

According to an interview with Woman’s Health, the Overboard and House Bunny star stated that while she, “never, ever thought” about getting breast enhancement surgery, she changed her mind when she turned 30.

“I was always a negative-A cup, so when I was 30, I was getting a divorce, I had just finished House Bunny, and I’d sold another movie, all of these new things were happening to me, so I got my breasts done.” Regarding how she felt regarding her choice to get breast enhancement surgery, Faris stated that, “it was … awesome.”

“I never, ever thought I’d do something like that,” she went on, explaining that she “always thought plastic surgery was caving to ‘the man,’ you know? But it came down to a really simple thing: I wanted to fill out a bikini.”

Kourtney Kardasian on Her Breast Enhancement Surgery

In an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardiashians, Kim Kardashian casually let it slip that her sister, Kourtney, had undergone a breast enhancement surgery in her younger years.

“I have had breast implants,” Kourtney Kardashian stated in a 2010 episode of Nightline. “But it’s so funny, ‘cause it’s not a secret, I could care less” who knows.

Iggy Azalea on Her Breast Enhancement Surgery

“I love them so much I had to talk about them…” the Australian rapper told E! about her breast enhancement in a 2015 interview.

“I’d feel better not to have some secret,” she said. “It’s much freer to say it and then you don’t have to worry someone will dig it up.”

NeNe Leakes on Her Breast Enhancement Surgery

In an interview with People, the Real Housewives of Atlanta star stated that she has had liposuction, a nose job, and breast enhancement surgery (with a lift!)

“I still wanted to look like NeNe, the black woman that I am, but a better version.”

Kaley Cuoco on Her Breast Enhancement Surgery

When speaking with Woman’s Health Magazine, Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuocostated that her breast enhancement surgery was, “the best thing I ever did.”

The actress went on to state that, “As much as you want to love your inner self, I’m sorry, you also want to look good…I don’t think you should do it for a man or anyone else, but if it makes you feel confident, that’s amazing!”

Naya Rivera on Her Breast Enhancement Surgery

In her book, Sorry Not Sorry, the former Glee star opened up about receiving breast enhancement surgery shortly after becoming an adult.

“People have a lot of opinions about plastic surgery, but more than 10 years after I got my boobs, they still make me happy when I look in the mirror.”

What Is Breast Implant Tracking?

What Is Breast Implant Tracking?

Each breast implant is given a specific serial number, which allows the manufacturer to locate important information regarding when and how the implants you received during your breast implant surgery were manufactured. As one of the leading choices for Oakland County patients undergoing breast implant surgery, Mentor has developed a breast implant tracking program tasked with keeping you updated on all necessary information regarding your mentor breast implants.

History of Silicone Breast Implant Regulation (Part 1)

History of Silicone Breast Implant Regulation (Part 1)

Most board certified plastic surgeons, like Detroit’s Dr. Ali, now prefer silicone breast implants for their patients because of their natural look and feel, and excellent safety record.

In this two part article Detroit area breast implant surgeon Dr. Ali discusses the regulations that have affected silicone breast implants over the years – ensuring patient safety.

Silicone Breast Implant Regulation: 1960s

Gel-filled silicone breast implants were introduced to the U.S. in 1962, and in common use by 1964.

This new technology was imperfect at first. In large part this was due to lack of study or regulation on this new technology.

But thanks to advancements in technology, rigorous scientific testing, and intensive regulation by the FDA, silicone breast implants are now very safe.

Silicone Breast Implant Regulation: 1970s

Before 1976 breast implants were not highly regulated. In 1976 the U.S. Congress passed the Medical Device Amendments to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Under this law, breast implants were considered “Class II” (moderate risk) medical devices – and as such they had to comply with general controls and performance standards.

At that time the FDA reviewed new breast implants through a process called the 510(k) Premarket Notification process, like any other Class II products.

Silicone Breast Implant Regulation: 1980s

In the early 1980s, the FDA began to identify certain local complications and adverse outcomes of these older silicone breast implants. Some reports even described cancer and connective tissue disease in a small number of women with breast implants.

As concerns arose about the safety of silicone breast implants rose, the FDA reclassified breast implant into “Class III” (higher-risk), which requires premarket approval. Breast implant manufacturers now had to provide data demonstrating the breast implants were safe and effective BEFORE they could be sold.

Silicone Breast Implant Regulation: 1990s

In 1992, the FDA still had concerns that the breast implant manufacturers were not adequately addressing public concerns about certain complications. At that time a higher incidence of implant rupture and silicone leakage was being seen.

So, the FDA removed all silicone breast implants from sale in the US, and required all manufacturers to submit premarket approval applications that contained detailed data on safety and effectiveness.

However, in the meantime, the FDA did allow manufacturers to provide silicone breast implants for reconstruction after mastectomy, correction of congenital deformities, or replacement of existing implants. So, the manufacturers enrolled women who received silicone breast implants for medical (not cosmetic) purposes in performance and safety studies.

Then in 1999, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a detailed report compiling the results of all of these published and ongoing studies on breast implants, called Safety of Silicone Breast Implants.

This report concluded that there was no evidence that silicone breast implants caused systemic health effects such as cancer or autoimmune disease. And while it did identify rare local complications (which included rupture, pain, capsular contracture, disfigurement, infection, and repeat surgeries) silicone breast implants were now recognized as generally safe.

Silicone Breast Implant Regulation: 2000s

After years of studies and technological improvements, the FDA approved silicone gel-filled breast implants in November 2006.

As with any surgery, there is always a small number of possible local complications and adverse outcomes. However, the FDA concluded that the benefits and risks of breast implants were sufficiently well understood for women to make informed decisions about their use.

Initially, in 2006, the FDA only approved Mentor’s MemoryGel Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants and Allergan’s∗ Natrelle Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants – followed six years later by Sientra’s Silicone Gel Breast Implants.

Silicone Breast Implant Regulation: 2010s

Advanced technologies in breast implant look, feel and safety continued to be developed. And in 2013 Mentor’s MemoryShape and Allergan Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Breast Implants were approved.

Today these five breast implants remain the only 5 breast implants that are FDA approved for use in the US.
