boss

What Should You Tell Your Boss When Getting Plastic Surgery?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – You’ve decided to engage in the ultimate form of self-improvement by opting for one or more plastic surgery procedures. But now you’re stressing out because you know there may be downtime as your body heals from the procedure, and you have to work.

What are you going to tell your boss? That you’re getting a breast augmentation and need a couple of weeks to heal fully?

The decision to get plastic surgery is an incredibly personal one and you may not want to tell everyone that you’re having your procedures completed, including your boss.

How do you keep your surgery a secret while also getting the required time off work? After all, some procedures may require you to be restricted to your bed or at least homebound for two weeks or more.

Here are some tips that may be able to help you out during this life-changing time.

Be Bold, but Reveal As Much as You’re Comfortable With

You may feel that you are entitled to tell your boss that you are requesting time off for plastic surgery. But the fact is, you don’t have to tell anyone if you don’t want to.

You can tell your boss that you’re having minor surgery. This will also help to explain why you can’t make any sudden movements or put your body under too much strain once you return.

If probed, simply say that it’s personal, and you’d rather not divulge the reason. If you’re having rhinoplasty or a breast augmentation, the results are going to be noticeable when you get back to work, but again, it’s no one’s business but your own.

Get Creative

If you are undergoing rhinoplasty, you could very well tell your boss that you plan to have surgery to repair a deviated septum. Or, if you’re having a tummy tuck you could tell your co-workers that you fixed a hernia.

Obviously, this will be suspicious if you change your appearance too much, but it’s up to you if you plan to tell anyone what really happened.

Find Co-Workers to Take Up Your Slack

It might help you get the necessary time off if you tell your boss that you found one or more colleagues to take up any slack you may leave behind.

This shows your boss that you care about the company and that you’re invested in the business succeeding in your absence. It also puts less stress on your boss, as he or she will know that work will continue, even in your absence.

Can You Work Remotely?

More people are working from home now than ever before. If you have the type of job that you’re able to do your duties from the comfort of your bed or couch, bring this up with your boss.

You may find that your boss is perfectly okay with you working via your computer or laptop from home as you recover from surgery. You may even open the door to work from home more often, even after your recovery is complete.

Check Your Employee Handbook

Some companies allow a person to take time off for medical reasons. Check with your HR department to see how your employer deals with employees undergoing surgery.

Your company cannot ask about why you need the time of or what surgery you’re having. In some cases, you may be able to collect disability and get extended time off, especially if the procedure is medical in nature, such as a tummy tuck to ease chronic back pain and repair a hernia.

Tell the Truth

If all else fails, it might be best just to come clean about why you need the time off. You may find that your boss has considered plastic surgery or has had one or more procedures completed in the past, and thus may have sympathy for your plight.

Use Vacation Time

The ideal scenario is to use the vacation time you’ve accrued to recover from surgery. You won’t have to ask for permission, and no one will be the wiser about your decision to undergo plastic surgery.

For all anyone at work knows, including your boss, you went to Hawaii and came back looking younger and more attractive.

How Much Time Do You Need?

If you work a desk job with minimal movement, you might get by with taking just a few days off work to begin with. You should then refrain from engaging in heavy activity for at least two weeks. Check with your plastic surgeon about your requirements for successfully healing from your recent surgery.

If you work a job like construction where you’re required to exert yourself, you will want to take as much as two weeks off. You may need six weeks to fully recover from surgery before you can get back to work at full capacity. Even then, you might ask for limited duties until your body has fully healed.

Liposuction Surgery

Your Liposuction Questions Answered

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Thinking about liposuction, but you want to learn more about it first? You’ve come to the right place.

Here are the answers to your most important liposuction questions from one of Michigan’s top plastic surgeons, Dr. M. Azhar Ali.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, improves the contours of your body by removing excess fat deposits that exist between your skin and the muscle underneath. Oftentimes this is fat that has become resistant to diet and exercise.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

In most cases, patients opt to have liposuction on their abdomen, hips, thighs (anterior, outer and inner), breasts, buttocks, arms, knees, and neck.

Is Liposuction Only for Women?

Certainly not. Men make up about 15-25% of all liposuction patients. When men opt to have the procedure, they usually target their abdomens, love handles (flanks), and breasts, but the chin and neck are also sometimes included.

How Many Office Visits Are Required?

If you are having a single area worked on, such as your arms, your plastic surgeon will attempt to complete the procedure in a single session.

However, your plastic surgeon will sometimes recommend that you come back for additional liposuction sections, particularly if you are having more than one area worked on at the same time. Your plastic surgeon will determine if more sessions are necessary by calculating your height and weight and by gauging your overall health.

What is the Recovery Like?

Immediately following surgery, your plastic surgeon will probably require you to wear an elastic compression garment. Think of it as a type of specially made girdle. You will wear this elastic piece to reduce any bleeding that may occur immediately following surgery, as well as to reduce any swelling.

If local anesthesia was used, you will be able to leave the facility about 30 minutes following the procedure. If your plastic surgeon used general anesthesia or IV sedation, you may need an hour or more to fully recover before you are discharged. You should be able to return to work within a couple days’ time.

Are the Results Permanent?

Any fat cells that your plastic surgeon removes during surgery will not grow back. That means that you will have a new body shape after you recover from the procedure.

There will still be fat cells present, and these may be susceptible to weight gain. Your plastic surgeon can provide you with tips to help you manage your weight, which can extend your positive results.

If you happen to gain weight following liposuction surgery, you will appear to be a larger version of your new body shape.

Will I Be Left with Loose Skin?

If your skin has good elasticity, you should be left with smooth and naturally looking skin following liposuction.

If you have excess skin following the procedure, you may want to opt for a tummy tuck instead of liposuction. Your plastic surgeon will determine which procedure you are a good candidate for following your initial consultation.

Are There Any Risks?

Liposuction is a very safe procedure. However, as with any surgical procedure, infection, bleeding, and nerve injury can occur.

The only time liposuction may be risky if is you attempt to do too much liposuction in a single day. Or if you do not follow your plastic surgeon’s advice following surgery.

Listen to your plastic surgeon’s suggestions, in other words, and your procedure will have favorable results like they do for the majority of patients who opt for this procedure worldwide.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The fees you are required to pay may vary depending on how many areas you wish to treat. Treating one area, such as your abdomen, is less expensive than treating your abdomen, arms, and thighs.

If you have more questions about liposuction or you wish to get an accurate fee quote, contact Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Ali today for a consultation.

breast reconstruction

Detroit Plastic Surgeon Dr. M. Azhar Ali Hosts Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day

Detroit, MI – Amae Plastic Surgery Center in Bloomfield Hills is hosting a Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day for women affected by breast cancer. It is the only event in the country sponsored by the The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

The event will be held on October 19, 2016, at Amae Plastic Surgery Center, which is located at 43940 Woodward Avenue, Suite 100 in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, 48302.

What Is Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day?

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day is part of the Breast Reconstruction USA Campaign, which is a co-initiative sponsored by the ASPS and The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF). Together, the two organizations have managed to create one of the few breast cancer campaigns that are dedicated to building awareness around the options available to viable candidates of breast reconstruction surgery.

Building Awareness Around Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast reconstruction is a procedure that is designed to reform the breast following a mastectomy or lumpectomy. In starting the campaign, the ASPS and The PSF wants all women who are candidates for breast reconstruction surgery to have access to safe and timely treatment.

The campaign also wants women to know that Federal law mandates the coverage of breast reconstruction surgery for all breast cancer patients. This is the case even if the reconstruction procedure is delayed due to medical treatment.

Dr. Ali: One of the Country’s Top Breast Reconstruction Surgeons

Dr. Ali, who was recently honored with the coveted Top Docs 2016 award by Hour Detroit magazine, was chosen by the ASPS to host the Breast Reconstruction Awareness event because his practice provides the safe and timely treatment the ASPS and The PSF require as part of the campaign guidelines.

Dr. Ali boasts a 99% approval rating by his patients and is able to provide several breast reconstruction surgery case studies to showcase his expertise. Dr. Ali’s goal is to make all women aware of the breast reconstruction options that are available to them following a breast cancer operation.

Dr. Ali is proud to host the event and hopes that all women affected by breast cancer who live in the greater Detroit area will make an appearance.

“Come out and learn as much as you can about breast reconstruction surgery, which can improve your self-esteem and quality of life,” Dr. Ali said.

facial plastic surgery

Facial Plastic Surgery Can Turn Back Time

Detroit, MI – You can usually tell how old someone is by the wisdom he or she exhibits. Unfortunately, our faces also tend to give our age away.

As we get older, our cheeks begin to sag, we develop laugh lines and crow’s feet, and those problems only exarcerbate as the years go by.

Some people aren’t taking these age-related appearance busters sitting down. Instead, they’re taking to lying on the surgeon’s table and opting for one or more facial plastic surgery procedures.

According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, facial plastic surgeons saw a 64% increase in patients in the year 2015. And the trend only seems to be growing.

“There are quite a few plastic surgery procedures that can help a person look years younger than their chronological age,” says Dr. M Azhar Ali, a Detroit Plastic Surgeon who operates AMAE Plastic Surgery Center in Bloomfield Hills.

Non-surgical procedures include injectables like Botox, Juvederm, Radiesse and Restylane, which are designed to smooth the wrinkles in the face.

Xeomin is another injectable that is approved by the FDA to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.

Other non-surgical techniques include Belotero Balance and Sculptra Aesthetic, which are dermal fillers that help to stimulate the skin’s natural collagen production, leading to a more youthful appearance.

“Many patients are happy with these non-surgical techniques,” says Dr. Ali. “But for patients who require more thorough facial correction, there are a variety of surgical techniques that can really work well.”

Dr. Ali is referring to facelifts, which can lift the skin of the face to minimize wrinkles and reduce the sagging of the jowls.

There is also the neck lift. The neck tends to show age even before the face does, and the neck lift can make a person look younger by tightening the skin in that area.

Other surgical techniques include nose reshaping, brow lifts, cheek implants, eyelid surgery, chin implants, ear surgery, hair transplants and dermabrasion (a technique that helps to refinish the top layers of the skin through a method known as controlled surgical scraping).

Another popular facial plastic surgery procedure includes facial reconstruction, which involves skin grafting and scar reduction to correct damage to the face, such as might happen in an automobile accident.

“With all of these techniques, a person can erase years from their face and feel much better about themselves personally, professionally and in all areas of their life,” Dr. Ali says.

According to the AAFPRS, the most popular facial plastic surgery procedures include rhinoplasty (nose reconstruction), a combination of surgical and non-surgical techniques like Botox, and eyelid surgery to prevent looking so fatigued.

More than 51% of those surveyed said that they had facial plastic surgery to remain competitive in the workforce.

microdermabrasion

The Wonders of Microdermabrasion for Sun Baked Skin

Detroit, MI – Sunbathers are well aware of the effects the sun can have on the skin.

Spend a little time in the sun and you get a nice healthy tan.

Too much sun, on the other hand, can leave you looking much older than your years.

When the skin has taken a beating from the sun, one plastic surgeon suggests a technique that many are raving about.

“Microdermabrasion is a simple technique that can make a person look years younger and restore a healthy glow to the skin,” says Plastic Surgeon Dr. M Azhar Ali who operates AMAE Plastic Surgery Center in Detroit.

Dr. Ali is referring to one of the most popular choices among patients for improving the appearance of dull, aged or uneven skin.

The procedure is a favorite of patients because it is fairly affordable and doesn’t involve any invasive cosmetic procedures.

“Patients like microdermabrasion because it addresses a person’s flaws on the surface level, only treating the outermost layer of skin,” says Dr. Ali.

Using a handheld machine known as the diamond tome device attached to suction tubing, the plastic surgeon will gently exfoliate the patient’s skin, which removes dead skin cells and reveals the healthy younger skin underneath.

Nearly 900,000 microdermabrasion techniques were performed in 2014, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the number of patients opting for the treatments have steadily risen since then.

When asked to delve deeper into the specifics of the procedure, Dr. Ali says, “The treatment is quick, relatively painless and is safe for all skin types.”

The treatment is also incredibly versatile. Not only can it be used on sun damaged skin, but it can also treat textured skin, acne, acne scars, and minimize large pores.

As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, Dr. Ali suggests that more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or completely remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation.

“By the end of the treatment phases, however, a patient can look good as new,” Dr. Ali says.

Myths About Plastic Surgery That Aren’t True

Detroit, MI – You’re looking to improve your life through the wonders of plastic surgery.
But you’re torn.

What if something goes wrong? What if you can’t afford it? What if…What if…What if…

If you keep asking ‘what if’ questions, it’s probably because you’ve been taken in by all the pervasive myths that surround this amazing and life-changing industry.

Before you consider going under the knife to boost your appearance and your self-esteem, it’s time to get the facts straight.

Here are the most common myths that people actually believe about plastic surgery.
By learning the truth, you’ll be much better informed and well prepared to give yourself the body and/or face makeover you widely deserve.

Common Myths Debunked

Myth #1: Plastic Surgery is Risky and Dangerous

The Truth: You know what’s risky and dangerous? Getting plastic surgery in a third world country for pennies on the dollar.

You know what’s not? Having your procedures performed by a skilled and trained surgeon with a proven track record.

As long as you are in good health, and you are a good candidate for plastic surgery, your procedure will be safe and the risks minimal.

Of course, plastic surgery is still surgery, so infection and other complications can always occur, but as long as you engage in self-care and listen to your surgeon’s instructions post-surgery, you’ll most likely recover just fine.

Choose your surgeon carefully, listen to his or her instructions, and your plastic surgery procedure is very likely to go off without a hitch.

Myth #2: Plastic Surgery is Only for Rich People

The Truth: People from all walks of life are engaging in plastic surgery, and it’s becoming more common than ever.

From non-surgical techniques like Botox to remove lines and wrinkles to breast augmentations and tummy tucks, men and women of all ages and socioeconomic statuses are undergoing plastic surgery, and the trend only seems to be increasing.

If plastic surgeons only operated on the super wealthy, the industry wouldn’t be booming like it currently is.

Myth #3: Plastic Surgery is Only for Women

The Truth: More men are opting for plastic surgery than ever before.

In fact, Botox, dermal fillers, laser treatments and liposuction are becoming favorites of men everywhere to give them a leg up in the workplace. Plastic surgery helps men look younger and feel more virile, making them more competitive amongst their professional counterparts.

Guys who have excess breast tissue also choose to go under the knife for a procedure called gynecomastia surgery.

The bottom line is that men have body issues, too, and plastic surgery can help men everywhere overcome those issues, just like women have for years.

Myth #4: Plastic Surgery is Only for the Vain

The Truth: Just because you choose to get plastic surgery doesn’t mean that you’re full of yourself.

Far from it.

Going under the knife means that you’re into self-improvement.

When diet and exercise aren’t enough to get rid of belly fat, which can happen with age and multiple pregnancies, a tummy tuck and/or liposuction can help you get your pre-pregnancy body back.

Everyone ages, that much is true, but you don’t have to allow time to take its toll. If you feel young inside, you should look that way, too. Plastic surgery can help you do that.

But plastic surgery isn’t all about looks. Studies have shown that tummy tucks, for example, can have medical benefits too.

You then you have to consider all the plastic surgery procedures that are designed to help people overcome birth defects, such as cleft palates, or post-cancer breast reconstruction.
Plastic surgery isn’t only for the vain. It’s for individuals who want more out of life.

Conclusion

It’s sad to think that these myths, as common as they are, have kept people from undergoing surgery that could have positively changed their lives.

By choosing a highly-decorated plastic surgeon and by making the decision to better your life through plastic surgery, you might find yourself feeling like an entirely different person.

You might reach for goals you never considered. You might take on an entirely different attitude.

And you just may see a massive boost in your self-confidence and how you feel about yourself.

Don’t let these myths take hold, learn the truth, and you’ll feel much better about your decision to have plastic surgery, whatever procedures you may be considering.

labia1

The Truth About Labial Reduction Surgery (Labiaplasty)

Detroit, MI – Are you unhappy with the large size of your labia minora and the way it hangs a tad too low?

If so, you don’t have to live with the hand that nature has dealt you.

Labiaplasty, the plastic surgery procedure designed to reduce the size of your labia, can help you regain your confidence, particularly in the bedroom.

Anxious to learn more?

Here are the facts surrounding this simple procedure that is changing the lives of women everywhere.

Why Does the Labia Minora Become Enlarged?

The labia minor has the necessary function of protecting your vaginal opening when your legs are spread. When the labia minor is too large, however, complications can result.

In some cases, you may have been born with enlarged labia. Or maybe you developed the issue with age or following childbirth.

No matter how you managed to develop enlarged labia, you don’t have to endure the pesky problems that result.

Complications from Enlarged Labia

When your labia minora extends further than your labia majora, it can cause friction issues.
In some cases, you may experience personal hygiene problems.

Exercising and engaging in sports may become such an ordeal that you feel like giving up altogether.

To make matters worse, you may not be able to have sexual intercourse as easily. And then there are the comments that may have come from sexual partners that can completely destroy your self-esteem.

Whatever problems you may be experiencing, labiaplasty surgery can help.

How is the Surgery Performed?

Labiaplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia. However, your surgeon may choose to use local anesthesia with sedation, depending on how thorough a procedure is necessary.
Your surgeon will take great care to reduce the size of your labia while making it look as though you are born that way.

To the untrained eye, it won’t appear as though you had surgery at all. In other words, your smaller labia will look completely natural with barely noticeable scarring.

What to Expect Post-Surgery

When the surgery is complete, your surgeon will give you a dressing pad to wear that is similar to a maxi pad. You should wear this pad while remaining on bed rest for at least one week.

During this time, you should also engage in an “on and off” application of cold compresses, which will reduce swelling.

You may experience some bleeding and bruising in the surgical area, but these will disappear within a few days.

When Can You Get Back to Living Life?

With your renewed sense of confidence, you should be able to return to your regular routine after a week. However, don’t go running any marathons or hit the weight room just yet.

You should refrain from engaging in strenuous activity (that includes sexual intercourse) for at least six weeks.

After the six weeks recovery period is up, and as with any surgery, try easing back into your usual activity and sex routine so that you don’t set your recovery back just in case your body takes longer to bounce back post-surgery.

Your plastic surgeon will give you explicit instructions on how to care for your dressing at home and when to return to life’s activities. Listen to these instructions and follow them with careful attention and you should be back to your usual self in no time.

A Renewed Sense of Life

With your reduced and reshaped labia, you should find relief from all your previous issues. You should also feel more confident during sex, which can certainly enhance your sexual pleasure.

Dr. Ali now offers labiaplasty to residents of Troy, Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills, Rochester Hills, Detroit, and Clarkston.

If you are unhappy with the size of your labia and you are considering labiaplasty, schedule an appointment with experienced Detroit plastic surgeon Dr. Ali for a consultation.

5 Ways Plastic Surgery Can Improve Your Life

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Considering cosmetic surgery, but still on the fence? If so, you’re probably wondering if the prep, procedure and recovery time are worth it.

If any of this sounds familiar, what you’re about to learn might surprise you.

As it turns out, not only can cosmetic surgery alter your appearance – such as the shape of your nose or size of your waist – going “under the knife” can also improve your quality of life.

“I had the [breast augmentation] surgery three weeks ago, and each day I am happier and happier with my results!” said a recent patient of Dr. M. Azhar Ali, one of Michigan’s top plastic surgeons and owner of AMAE Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Center.

She added, “I look natural, I get compliments from all my friends, and I feel more confident than ever!”

Dr. Ali stresses that as long as the patient doesn’t have unrealistic expectations, there are five major areas where a person’s life can become immeasurably better by opting for one or more procedures.

“I call it becoming a better person from the outside in,” added Dr. Ali.

Here are the five ways your life can be enhanced from the outside in by opting for one or more cosmetic procedures.

A Sunnier Disposition

A recent European study confirmed that patients who undergo plastic surgery report a boost in self-confidence and overall enjoyment of life.

The study followed 550 patients during and post-procedure and came to the conclusion that the majority of patients, “felt healthier, were less anxious, had developed more self-esteem and found their operated body feature in particular, but also their body as a whole, more attractive,” researchers said.

So if you’re in the doldrums at the moment, and one or more body parts are contributing to your lack of confidence, one or more cosmetic procedures could put that much-needed smile back on your face.

A Healthier Body

You may be wondering how plastic surgery can help your body become healthier. In addition to improved self-esteem, which has innumerable effects on health, there are other facts that might surprise you.

If you have large breasts that prevent you from exercising, for example, a breast reduction would improve your tolerance to exercise, leading to less discomfort and a healthier heart.
A rhinoplasty to repair your deviated septum would lead to improved oxygen flow, more efficient breathing, deeper sleep (and a lot less snoring).

Liposuction and tummy tucks (and even breast reductions) remove fat cells, which contributes to fewer fatty acids being released into the body. You will also decrease your risk of diabetes.

These are just some of the effects that can be had by opting for certain cosmetic procedures. You’ll look better, feel better and you might just live longer.

A Boost Up the Career Ladder

We always hear of celebrities altering their appearance to land juicy roles. It turns out, many non-celebrities are doing the same thing, and enjoying the same types of benefits.

According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery, a major faction of people who request plastic surgery report doing so because they want to remain competitive on the job.

In addition to higher education and living a healthy lifestyle, the way you look can get you hired or secure you that much-deserved raise.

Is going under the knife the only way to get ahead? Absolutely not, but it can give you a leg up on the competition if you ever find yourself head to head with another professional.
All things being even, if you look better and feel better about yourself, which cosmetic surgery can contribute to, you are more likely to get the job or promotion.

So if you find yourself struggling to find work or stagnant in your current position, one or more plastic surgery operations could help you find the success you crave.

Enhanced Relationships

Dr. Bryan Mendelson, former President of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, says that we are hard-wired to appreciate beauty. And that attractive people, among other things, experience better personal lives.

For one, your relationships could improve. If you or your partner have one or more body parts that prevent you from being intimate, a cosmetic procedure could bring you two closer together.

You might also have an easier time making friends.

Dr. Mandelson cites a study that showed how good looking people are more likely to be labeled as being “good” and trustworthy, and they are simply treated better than those who aren’t as attractive.

Of course, it could be the increase in self-esteem that helps you make better friends and enhances your other personal – even romantic – relationships, but there’s no denying that attractive people are more magnetic.

It’s not all about looks. A personality still goes a long way, but why not get that boost in social status that comes from looking better, if doing so is only a single procedure away?

New Lease on Life

Getting one or more plastic surgery procedures makes you more motivated to improve your life.

“My patients jump out of bed in the morning. They look forward to their days, to meeting new people. There is an obvious change between who they were and who they are now, and it’s a beautiful thing,” said Dr. Ali.

The fact is, cosmetic surgery is a growing movement. Analysts predict that more plastic surgeries will be performed in 2016 than any other year. To put that into perspective, Americans spent $12 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2014, the most recorded since 2008, as seen in the graph below.

graph

With improved confidence, health, professional and social lives, and a whole new outlook, it’s no wonder why so many opt for cosmetic surgery.

If you are considering plastic surgery, you now know that a “brand new you” is just a quick phone call away. Call Dr. Ali today for a consultation. (855) 335-7200

Prepare to Kiss That Turkey Neck Goodbye

Rochester Hills, MI – Individuals who are self-conscious of their “turkey necks” can now rejoice. A highly-decorated plastic surgeon in Rochester Hills, Michigan has the sagging neck solutions they have all been searching for.

“I have patients come into my practice all the time looking to tighten their sagging necks,” says Plastic Surgeon Dr. M Azhar Ali, who operates AMAE Plastic Surgery Center. He adds, “Luckily for them, there are quite a few solutions that we offer.”

Millions of Americans suffer from an unflattering neck area. This wrinkled or sagging skin can cause a person to look much older than his or her chronological age. It can also give off the appearance of being heavy, even if the person is of average weight.

Just because a person has sagging skin around the neck does not mean he or she has to live with it, however.

Dr. Ali says that with just one or more cosmetic procedures, a person can learn to be proud of their neck instead of constantly hiding it from the world.

What Causes Turkey Neck?

In some cases, turkey neck can be caused by significant weight loss. The fat may have disappeared, but the skin no longer has the elasticity to shrink back into place.

In other cases, the condition is hereditary. If one or both parents suffered from a sagging, wrinkled neck, chances are their offspring will too.

The condition can also be a product of age. Unfortunately, the neck is the one area that gives away how old we look, despite the appearance of the rest of our body.

No matter what caused the excess and/or sagging skin to form around the neck area, there are some practical solutions. Most of them involve minimally invasive surgery and short recovery times, which is great news. The patient could be back to work in short order looking and feeling more confident and self-assured.

Here are the procedures that have helped others say goodbye to their turkey necks for good.

Neck Contouring

This is a surgical technique that produces a slimmer, smoother neckline. In some cases, the procedure is combined with others that also shape the chin and tighten the skin on the face.

Here are the procedures that are typically performed during a neck contouring operation.

Neck Liposuction

For patients that suffer from an unsightly double chin even though they are not overweight, Dr. Ali recommends this simple procedure.

Neck Liposuction removes the excess fat, thus slimming the neckline. Dr. Ali recommends this procedure for younger patients (20’s to 50’s) whose skin still retains a certain amount of elasticity.

When skin has lost its elasticity, neck liposuction, unfortunately, won’t do much good. The idea is to have the skin contract evenly after the surgery is complete. Otherwise, the skin around the neck will merely sag, and the patient will be back to square one.

The good news is that this procedure is a quick one. Using nothing more than a local anesthetic, the cosmetic surgeon will make one or two tiny incisions (usually concealed under the chin or behind the ears) whereby the excess fat is removed.

The patient will then wear a supportive chin strap for a few days and be back to work within a week in most cases (returning to full activity within the span of two weeks).

The result is a newly refined jawline and a naturally contoured chin and neck.

Neck Lift

Patients that don’t have excess neck fat, but still experience sag, may benefit from neck lift surgery.

There are essentially two types of neck lifts. Cervicoplasty is the procedure that is used to remove the excess skin around the neck. Platysmaplasty will tighten loose neck muscles.

In some cases, the plastic surgeon will perform both procedures for a more defined neck area.

Unlike neck liposuction, neck lifts are performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. A small incision is placed behind each ear. If the case warrants it, a third incision may be placed under the chin.

It is through these cuts that the cosmetic surgeon will tighten the neck muscles and remove the excess skin.

Recovering from a neck lift depends on the patient’s state of health and the extent of the procedure. In most cases, the individual will be able to return to work within two weeks.

It is common for the person to feel tightness in the neck area post-surgery and bruising and swelling may also occur. These symptoms are normal and will diminish with time.

When the patient does fully recover, he or she will be able to look in the mirror and enjoy a smoother neck without all the wrinkles and creases.

“This tends to boost the person’s self-esteem considerably,” says Dr. Ali.

Have Realistic Expectations

While these neck contouring procedures can help patients look years younger and more attractive, they are not anti-aging cures. No amount of surgery can stop the aging process, but aging can be slowed by choosing a qualified cosmetic surgeon.

For individuals who are thinking about one or more operations for what is commonly known as “turkey neck”, or for other parts of the body, such as the face, chin, and nose, be aware that these procedures can be combined with others to improve one’s appearance and self-esteem.
