Is CoolSculpting Right for Me?

Who Can or Should Get CoolSculpting?

Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of people in Oakland County get the body they love with CoolSculpting. One of the questions he is asked most often is “Am I a good candidate for the CoolSculpting procedure?” In this article we discuss who will benefit from CoolSculpting treatments.

CoolSculpting Works for Women and Men

The CoolSculpting procedure works equally well for both men and women. Although men and women tend to store fat in different areas, CoolSculpting can be skillfully applied to give women a more feminine shape, while offering men a more masculine or muscular appearance.

CoolSculpting Age Requirement

Technically, there is no firm age limit at which CoolSculpting can be performed. However, it is not appropriate for people whose body has not finished growing and developing. For this reason CoolSculpting is rarely performed on people younger than 18 or 19.

Additionally, a patient must be 18 years old to legally consent to CoolSculpting. In those extremely rare cases where someone under 18 is seeking CoolSculpting, parental consent would need to be provided.

As for an upper age limit, even women in their 80s can successfully enjoyed the benefits of CoolSculpting – as long as they are in good health and have clearance from their regular doctor!

CoolSculpting and Weight Loss

CoolSculpting is not a weight loss procedure, and is not appropriate for obese individuals. CoolSculpting freezes stubborn, isolated pockets of fat.

The ideal CoolSculpting candidate will generally be within 30 (to maybe 40) pounds of their ideal weight – but have areas of excess fat and/or noticeable bulges in certain areas they’d like to get rid of.

CoolSculpting and Medical Conditions

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical and non-invasive procedure, which requires no incisions and no anesthesia. However, it is still a medical treatment. For this reason, anyone with an underlying medical condition should consult with their personal physician before scheduling the procedure. You should also inform Dr. Ali of any medical conditions you have.

A small number of medical conditions do completely preclude CoolSculpting altogether, including: cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria.

If you have any preexisting medical conditions, it’s important to talk to your doctor before scheduling CoolSculpting procedures.

CoolSculpting Areas of the Body

In the United States CoolSculpting is FDA-approved for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the thighs, abdomen (belly fat), flanks (love handles), back (bra rolls), buttocks (hips), and upper arms, as well as bulges in the submental (chin and neck) area.

In some cases Coolsculpting can also be used to remove fat in “male breasts” (gynecomastia). However, if there is a lot of breast tissue, liposuction or other treatments might be a better option to remove the actual male breast tissue.

If you’re not sure – or still wondering – whether you are a good candidate for CoolSculpting click here.

During your first visit Dr. Ali will look at your whole body from different angles, take measurements, and target the specific areas where you want to eliminate fat.  For some people, one CoolSculpting treatment may be enough. For other patients, a customized treatment plan may include multiple treatments.

 On Your CoolSculpting Treatment Day

Remember, CoolSculpting is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure. Your fat will be “frozen” – but there are no incisions and no anesthetic needed.

A gel pad and applicator will be applied to the targeted area of fat. The CoolSculpting applicator will then be applied to deliver controlled, targeted cooling to the fat.

The CoolSculpting procedure can be a little chilly, and you feel intense cold on the target area initially. As the area numbs within 5 to 10 minutes, this feeling usually subsides.

The CoolSculpting applicator also uses a mild vacuum to draw fatty tissue into the applicator cup, so you may also feel some slight pulling, tugging, or mild pinching. While slightly uncomfortable, most patients agree that it is painful. And many people simply read, check email, or even take a nap during the process.

The entire process only takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending g upon how much fat is frozen and how many body areas are treated during your visit.

After Your CoolSculpting Treatment

There is no downtime with CoolSculpting. You can even drive yourself home and/or return to work the same day.

Following the procedure, there may sometimes be some temporary redness, swelling, blanching (whiteness), bruising, tingling, stinging, or tenderness. This is perfectly normal. In a few patients there can be cramping, aching, itching, skin firmness or sensitivity. Chin liposuction may give you a sensation of fullness in the back of the throat.

All of these effects are temporary and will typically resolve within a few days – or a week or two at most. As with any medical procedure, Dr. Ali will explain in more detail what to expect in terms of potential after effects.

A follow-up assessment will be scheduled with Dr. Ali’s office, to review your CoolSculpting results, as well as to schedule additional treatments, if any.

Seeing Results after CoolSculpting

Now that the fat has been frozen, your body will gradually eliminate the dead fat cells over time. Initial results can begin to be seen in as little as three week. After three months the results should be substantially visible, and will be fully complete in no more than 6 months.

Fat cells that have been eliminated never come back. That does not mean you can never gain weight, though. So, maintaining a healthy lifestyle after your CoolSculpting will ensure the best long-term results!

CoolSculpting: Fat Loss Without Diet & Exercise!

How to Lose Fat Fast without Diet or Exercise

Americans spend billions of dollars each year on diet fads and fitness trends, and yet more than 70% of Americans are still unhappy with their bodies. Thankfully, a new technology called CoolSculpting now enables men and women to “freeze off the fat” without surgery, diet or even exercise!

A Detroit area pioneer and expert in the CoolSculpting procedure is Hour Detroit Magazine’s Top Doc Dr. M. Azhar Ali. We sat down with Dr. Ali to ask the question that’s on everyone’s mind: Is it possible to lose fat without diet and exercise?

CoolSculpting for Fat Loss

There exist a few innovative procedures that can help patients look and feel their best without diet and exercise, says Dr. Ali. He points to some of the more popular procedures he currently performs at Amae Plastic Surgery Center in suburban Detroit.

One of the newest procedures Dr. Ali offers, CoolSculpting is the only FDA-approved and non-surgical means to treat excess fat. The procedure involves a specialized machine that freezes and eliminates stubborn fat cells. Patients can lose pounds and inches without sweating excessively or turning to bland, restrictive diets.

Dr. Ali urges all his patients to live a healthy lifestyle and to eat foods that provide adequate nutrition and healthy vitamins. He reminds us that CoolSculpting is not a treatment for obesity. But for those patients who are within 30 pounds of their ideal weight, CoolSculpting can eliminate stubborn fat without all the effort.

Additionally, because there is no surgery involved, there is no scarring and no painful recovery or “downtime.”

In addition to CoolSculpting, Detroit plastic surgeon Dr. Ali offers other state-of-the-art fat removal procedures that are more effective than diet and exercise alone.

Liposuction for Stubborn Fat

Liposuction I one of the most common procedures I currently perform,” states Dr. Ali. “Most of my patients are female, but I’m getting an increasing number of men who opt for the procedure as well.”

The procedure involves the removal of the excess fatty tissue that is difficult to get rid of with diet and exercise alone. Some patients opt to have fat removed from their abdomens, some from their hips and some from their upper thighs (also referred to as “saddle bags”). Men tend to be more concerned with their abdomens, chest and love handles (also referred to as a “spare tire”).

Liposuction can remove both the superficial and deep fat that can cause a person to look unshapely and feel unattractive.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

“Many men who come into my practice complain of having female-like breasts,” says Dr. Ali. “For these men, I recommend gynecomastia surgery.”

Gynecomastia refers to men who have excess breast and fat tissue in their chest area. In a culture where men are expected to take their shirts off at the pool or on the basketball court, having what are commonly referred to as “man boobs” can cause extreme bouts of embarrassment.

This surgery is performed with limited incisions and involves liposuction to remove the excess fat. The best part? There is very little downtime.

Mommy Makeover for a Fat Loss

For women who wish to lose weight and get their trim bodies back after having children, Dr. Ali recommends the “Mommy Makeover” combination of procedures. This may involve CoolSculpting, liposuction and/or a tummy tuck – and in some cases a breast lift or breast augmentation.

“By getting all the procedures done at one time, patients can save money, reduce downtime and lose the weight they desire, all while looking and feeling their best,” says Dr. Ali.

What Are the Side Effects of Liposuction?

Oakland County Surgeon Explains
The Side Effects of Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is performed with local anesthetic and is minimally invasive, making it an incredibly safe procedure for healthy men and women. As with any medical procedure, there are always some risks and potential complications. But hiring a skilled board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali – who has performed thousands of liposuction procedures – ensures that greatly lessen any risks.

Dr. Ali has performed thousands of tumescent liposuction procedures without complications. A recent study recently published in Dermatologic Surgery Journal reported that 112 patients who underwent the tumescent procedure had an average of two quarts of fat removed each, with no significant complications.

Does liposuction hurt?

The very first step in the liposuction process is an injection of local anesthetic. Once the local anesthetic has set in (usually 15 minutes) patients report feeling no pain at all.

Because Dr. Ali uses a tiny incision, and very small cannula (tube) to very gently remove the fat, most patients report minimal discomfort after liposuction as well.

There will be swelling, and may be some bruising after the procedures. Dr. Ali will discuss pain relief options with you – but most patients can manage any discomfort with over the counter Tylenol.

Will I have loose skin after liposuction?

When liposuction is done properly, you do not have loose skin following liposuction. Elastic skin will re-drapes and retracts to conform to the underlying tissue.

Dr. Ali will perform a thorough examination to determine your skin elasticity before scheduling liposuction. He is careful to remove the right amount of fat, in the right proportions, to ensure that your skin will support the new contours following liposuction.

Does Liposuction Leave Scars?

Each incision Dr. Ali makes in tumescent liposuction is no more than 3mm in length – which prevents the need for stitches, and minimizes or eliminates scaring. Typically a surgeon will make multiple incisions in order to adequately treat your target areas from multiple angles to achieve a smooth contour. However, the tiny scars, if any, are usually well-hidden and heal without incident.

What happens if I gain weight after liposuction?

When liposuction is performed fat is removed permanently. So, when liposuction is done properly, the contours of the body should permanently be improved. If you do gain weight, obviously you will be bigger, but your new contours and proportions should remain pretty much the same as they were after liposuction. Weight gain may make these contours a little less visible – but if you subsequently lose the weight again, your contours go back to what they looked like after liposuction.

Liposuction FAQs

How is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is the surgical removal of excess pockets of body fat with a thin, tube-like instrument called a cannula. The cannula is inserted into the fat layer of the skin, where it is gently moved back and forth to break up unwanted fatty deposits. The fat is then sucked out through the tube – sculpting bulging, fatty areas into smooth, attractive contours.

What is Tumescent Liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction is the newest technology in liposuction – which is less invasive than older liposuction methods. Only a local anesthetic is needed, and a very minute incision is all that is required. Tumescent liposuction results in faster recovery, less bleeding, swelling and bruising, and smoother, more beautiful result.

Is Liposuction Safe?

Minimally invasive tumescent liposuction performed with local anesthetic is an incredibly safe procedure for healthy men and women. As with any medical procedure, there are always some risks and potential complications. But hiring a skilled board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali – who has performed thousands of liposuction procedures – ensures that greatly lessen any risks.

When you schedule your consultation with Dr. Ali he will ensure you are physically fit to undergo surgery, and fully discuss any potential risks, if any, so you can make an informed decision.

How Long does Liposuction Take?

The length of your liposuction procedure will depend upon the number of areas to be treated and the amount of fat that needs to be removed. Most liposuction procedures last between 45 minutes and 2 ½ hours. Usually up to three to four areas can safely be done with a single liposuction procedure – meaning most patients only need one surgery for all treatment areas.

When will I see Liposuction Results?

The fat will be immediately and permanently removed at the time of the procedure – but swelling can make it hard to see right away. Usually by 3 weeks much of the swelling has subsided – so typically you will see the results within one month. Complete and finally results, however, may take up to 6 months or more – depending on the skin’s elasticity, the amount of fat removed and how much swelling occurred. Dr. Ali will thoroughly discuss expectations with you during your consultation, prior to your liposuction.

Get Shapely Calves & Ankles with Liposuction

Oakland County Surgeon Explains
Liposuction for Calves & Ankles

If you have stubborn pockets of fat on your calves and/or ankles, you know that there is perhaps no tougher area to try and reduce. This is because when fat accumulates on the calves and ankles it is almost entirely due to genetics – and no amount of dieting or exercise will help.

The good news is that thick calves, ankles and so-called “cankles” can now permanently be a thing of the past with calf and ankle liposuction.

Early liposuction procedures on the lower legs used to be fraught with complications and often produced unsatisfactory results. However, improvements in “Tumescent” (minimally invasive) liposuction of the lower legs extremely effective and very popular in the last two decades.

How Calf & Ankle Liposuction are Performed

Neither calf nor ankle liposuction is typically performed on its own. Rather an experienced plastic surgeon will shape the entire lower leg for the most aesthetic results. Liposuctioning the calf and ankle as a single procedure ensures that the best proportions of the lower leg are achieved.

In some cases, Dr. Ali may also perform liposuction of the knees and thighs at the same time as the calves and ankles – to contour the entire leg into a smooth, natural, attractive shape.

In performing calf and ankle liposuction a thin tube called a cannula is gently inserted into the fat layer of the calves or ankles. Moving the cannula slowly back and forth through the fat, the surgeon breaks up the fat cells, which are then sucked out through the cannula.

Dr. Ali performs calf and ankle liposuction with minimally invasive tumescent liposuction, which requires only local anesthetic. Typically, a tiny incision is placed directly below the knee, towards the top of the calf. Using two separate incisions on either side of the calf a smooth and shapely leg is literally “sculpted” into a slimmer, more beautiful shape.

Oakland County’s Best Calf & Ankle Liposuction

Dr. Ali considers all of the factors affecting your case, including your skin’s elasticity, the proportions of your entire leg, and your appearance goals to achieve results that are not only beautiful, but are 100% uniquely “you”. Financing options are also available!

Finally, get the legs, calves and ankles you’ve always wanted with safe, effective affordable liposuction.

Men’s Chest & Male Breast Liposuction

Oakland County Surgeon Explains
Liposuction for Men’s Chest & Male Breasts–

Male breast enlargement, also called gynecomastia, is a condition that can cause embarrassment and insecurity about one’s appearance. Fortunately there are a number of effective treatments to reduce male breasts – including fast, safe & affordable liposuction.

Excess fat in a man’s chest area is often genetic – and frequently no amount of diet or exercise helps. Other causes of male breast enlargement include:

  • Medications
  • Alcohol
  • Certain cancers
  • Tuberculosis
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Malnutrition
  • Hormone imbalance

Male Breast Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is performed by inserting a thin tube, called a cannula, into the treatment area. The surgeon moves the cannula back and forth to break up the fat cells, which are then sucked out through the tube.

As a board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ali has helped men get the masculine chest they desire with this technique. He has a deep understanding of how fat is stored in different areas of the body, and actually sculpts the chest, producing a proportionate, attractive appearance.

Because the male chest is an area that should only have muscle, all excess fat can typically be completely removed with liposuction. This includes removal of the fat pockets from both sides and from on the area under each nipple. In some cases an experienced surgeon will also remove glandular tissue in addition to fat to ensure a muscular appearance.

The approach and treatment for male breast liposuction differs for men, as opposed to removing fatty areas from women. Dr. Ali has decades of experience giving men the masculine, muscular chest they desire.

Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Liposuction?

Because male breasts are an area that is so easily improved by liposuction, most men who are suffering from gynecomastia are good candidates for chest liposuction.

Keep in mind that male breast liposuction is not a weight loss technique and is not recommended for individuals who are obese. Liposuction is not a substitute for maintaining a healthy weight – however it is ideal for men who have stubborn fat in the breast area that does not respond to diet and exercise.

If a man has fullness in the breast area, the best results are achieved if it is caught early on before the breasts drop and get too droopy. This ensures that the chest will not only look better in the short term, but will also look better later on as the man gets older.

Oakland County’s Best Male Breast Liposuction

Dr. Ali uses a unique, multifaceted approach to men’s breast reduction through liposuction. He doesn’t just suck out a single area of fatty tissue – but rather uses his skill and experience to bring proportion and balance to your entire body.

Chest liposuction must be tailored to the specific needs of each patient. Dr. Ali will offer you a consultation to examine your chest, listen thoroughly to your cosmetic goals, and offer his professional viewpoint to create a personalized treatment program that is specific to you.

Does Liposuction Work on the Face, Neck, Jowls & Double Chin?

Liposuction for Face, Neck, Jowls & Double Chin

Our parents give us many things – including the “DNA” that controls how much excess fat we have in our cheeks, chin, and neck. And while diet and exercise can help many areas of the body, it typically does nothing to reduce fatty deposits on the face, jaw line & “double chin”.

Nothing else contributes to our sense of “who we are” like our face does. Our face is how others remember us, it is what we see in the mirror every day. Unfortunately it is also the basis of how we are judged, and as well as how we judge ourselves. Everybody wants to feel attractive – but many people do not realize that facial liposuction can give them the appearance they want without surgery.

Dr. Ali is an Oakland County board certified plastic surgeon who has helped hundreds of women and men in Birmingham, West Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills and the surrounding area get the appearance they want with non-invasive tumescent liposuction of the cheeks, neck, jawline or double-chin.

.

What is facial liposuction?

Liposuction was originally designed for body contouring, but modern liposuction technology now makes it an ideal tool for sculpting the face and neck as well. In facial liposuction, a surgeon uses a special tiny tube (called a “micro-cannula”) attached to a gentle suction-syringe or pump to extract fat cells from the face.

A skilled, experienced, board-certified surgeon like Dr. Ali can sculpt areas of fat into more attractive and more youthful facial contours with liposuction. Among the most common facial liposuction procedures we perform at our Birmingham, Michigan office is “double-chin” removal that sculpts a more defined chin and jawline.

.

Advantages of Liposuction for Cheeks, Neck, Jowls & Double Chin

Many men and women prefer facial liposuction over a face-lift because it is non-invasive. Only a mild, local anesthetic is required and there is very minimal “downtime” or “recovery time”.  Additionally, there are no scars with facial liposuction. And because there is very, very minimal bruising or swelling most people will never even know you had the procedure done. In some cases, facial liposuction can provide more natural or “subtle” results than a facelift, as well.

Unlike CoolSculpting or “double-chin injections”, liposuction requires only one treatment and the results are visible as soon as swelling subsides. Both CoolSculpting and double-chin injections (Kybella) require multiple treatments and take much longer for results to be seen – as the body must gradually eliminate the “frozen” fat. Additionally, Kybella only targets the area immediately below the chin and not other problem areas, such as the jowls.

.

Facial Liposuction Procedure

The procedure of facial liposuction typically only takes 30 minutes to an hour – depending upon how much fat is to be removed, and from how many areas of the face. Only one treatment is required – and while some results may be immediately visible, the full results won’t be seen until all of the swelling subsides.

You will be given a compression garment with specific instructions on when to wear it. Typically it is around 5 days and then while sleeping for a couple more weeks.

The pain or discomfort is usually minimal, and can typically be managed with over the counter painkillers. However, many people do not need to take anything for pain at all. Dr. Ali will give you specific instructions regarding what you can safely take for any discomfort.

In younger patients and those with elastic skin, facial liposuction is very often effective on its own, and all that is needed. In some older patients, or those wishing more dramatic changes, facial liposuction may be combined with a laser resurfacing, a facelift, brow lift, eyelid surgery, nose surgery, or even chin or cheek implants.

Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting

Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting

Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women and men in Oakland County get the body they want with liposuction and CoolSculpting. But how do you know which procedure is right for you? In this article we discuss the general differences between liposuction and CoolSculpting.

Remember every patient is unique, and what is the best procedure for one person may not be right for someone else. Dr. Ali will provide you with a evaluation and detailed answers to your questions, so that you can chose the best procedure for your goals and your individual situation.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is a surgical technique that removes excess fat deposits located between the skin and muscle. It improves the body’s shape by surgically getting rid of stubborn “bulges” of fat that are resistant to exercise and dieting.

Liposuction is an excellent procedure for people who are at or near a healthy weight, who want to permanently “sculpt” away specific stubborn pockets of fat. It generally works best for people who have good skin elasticity and muscle tone – and who do not have excess skin or loose abdominal muscles.

In most cases liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, and the patient can go home within a half hour after the procedure. The incision in liposuction is very small (less than 3mm) so there are no stiches and no scars.

The recovery time is from 2 to 7 days before normal activity can be resumed – and the pain or discomfort gradually subsides over a period of 2 to 8 weeks.

Once the swelling goes down (4 to 6 weeks), the liposuction results are visible “immediately” – because the fat has been surgically “sucked out”.

In addition to be performed on the “tummy” (abdomen, waist) liposuction can also  be used on many other parts of the body including the sides (love handles), arms, chin, thighs and buttocks (butt).

CoolSculpting Procedure

Like liposuction, CoolSculpting is primarily used to remove stubborn areas of fat that resist diet and exercise.  Like liposuction, CoolSculpting is not a weight loss tool for obesity and it does not remedy flabby or loose abdominal skin or muscles.

CoolSculpting is non-surgical and non-invasive – meaning there is no incision and no local anesthetic. This also means that there is virtually no “downtime” and no period of recovery.

While lipo is generally done in one treatment, CoolSculpting, involves multiple treatments. You will begin to see results within 4-5 weeks, but it may take 3 to 5 months to deliver final results. Full results will eventually reduce the area treated by 20 to 25%.

In sum, CoolSculpting is less invasive, and less uncomfortable, with less downtime. But the results take more treatments and the results take much longer to be visible.

Beware of Liposuction Clinics With Only One Choice

The best way to determine which treatment is best for you is to discuss your goals with a board certified plastic surgeon who offers many different procedures. Dr. Ali will look at your skin, muscles, body, lifestyle and goals to help you chose the best procedure for your unique needs.

Always be very wary of doctors, clinic that only offer one type of procedure. They will likely steer or pressure you into the procedure they offer – even if another procedure would be better for your body, your goals or your lifestyle. Only a surgeon who offers multiple procedures can give you the choices you need that are best for you.

Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

Should I Get Liposuction?

Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women and men in Oakland County get the body they want with liposuction and tummy tucks. But how do you know which procedure is right for you? In this article we discuss the general differences between lipo and a tummy tuck.

It improves the body’s contour or shape by surgically getting rid of stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to exercise and dieting. Liposuction is not a good treatment for obesity or large weight loss.

Liposuction is an excellent procedure for people who are at or near a healthy weight, who simply want to “sculpt” away specific stubborn areas of fat. It generally works best for people who have good skin elasticity and muscle tone – and who do not have excess skin in the midsection or loose abdominal muscles.

In most cases liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, and the patient can go home within a half hour after the procedure. The incision in liposuction is very small – typically less than 3mm – so there are no stiches and no scars.

In addition to be performed on the “tummy” (abdomen, waist) liposuction can also  be used on many other parts of the body including the sides (love handles), arms, chin, thighs and buttocks (butt).

Tummy Tuck Procedure

A tummy tuck is a more invasive procedure. A tummy tuck is primarily aimed at addressing excess or “flabby” skin and loose muscle, and to a lesser extent excess fat.

A tummy tuck is also often a good procedure for abdominal “flabbiness” due to pregnancy or a large weight loss.

A tummy tuck (also called abdominoplasty) typically requires general anesthesia. An incision across the lower abdomen is performed during a tummy tuck in order to remove excess abdominal skin and tighten the abdominal muscles. This does result in some scaring, as well as a longer recovery time and more intense discomfort.

Do I Need Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck?

A patient with elastic skin and good abdominal muscle tone will generally only require liposuction to remove the fat “bulges” from the abdomen area, and get the results they desire. However, a tummy tuck is usually the best solution if the main issue experienced by the patient is loose skin or stretched muscle tissue.

In some cases, the less invasive liposuction procedure can be done first to remove fat, since it has fewer risks and a shorter recovery time. Then later – if truly necessary to achieve more dramatic results – a tummy tuck can subsequently be performed.

Both liposuction and tummy tuck are excellent body contouring procedures. Dr. Ali will evaluate your skin, muscles and body to assess your individual situation. He will provide detailed answers to your questions, so that you can chose the best procedure for your goals and unique needs.
