Should I Get Liposuction?

Should I Get Liposuction?

If you are tired of stubborn pockets of fat on your waist, hips, thighs, love handles, or elsewhere on your body you may be considering liposuction. But how do you know if liposuction is right for you? Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of men and women in Oakland County get the body they want with liposuction. In this article we present some facts to help you decide if liposuction is right for you.

Of course, a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon who performs liposuction is always best. Dr. Ali will also offer you a consultation so that you can decide if lipo is the right procedure for you.

How Liposuction Works

Liposuction is a surgical technique that removes excess fat deposits located between the skin and muscle. It improves the body’s contour or shape by surgically getting rid of stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to exercise and dieting.

Which Body Areas can be Treated by Liposuction?

The areas most frequently treated with lipo in women are:

  • waist (abdomen, tummy)
  • flanks/“love handles”
  • hips
  • outer, inner & anterior thighs
  • butt / buttocks
  • knees
  • arms
  • chin and neck.

Man can also get liposuction and are about 15% to 25% of our lipo patients. The areas most frequently treated with lipo in men are:

  • chin and neck area,
  • abdomen / waist
  • flanks (“love-handles”),

Who Can Get Liposuction Surgery?

Liposuction is not a good treatment for obesity or large weight loss. Even as a last resort, liposuction is simply not effective for people who are unable to lose large amounts of weight through dieting and exercise.

Liposuction is ideal for people who are at or near a healthy weight, who want to “sculpt” away specific stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to dieting or exercise.

A good candidate for liposuction will have realistic expectations. Liposuction can provide very substantial improvements in the “shape” or “contour” of “fatty” body parts. But the amount of fat and the elasticity of the skin will affect the final results.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The fee for liposuction will depend upon how many areas of your body will be treated, as well as the experience and reputation of your surgeon.

Dr. Ali is a board certified plastic surgeon with an excellent reputation for amazing results. We offer competitive rates, as well as financing options to help you get the lipo you want.

But your decisions about liposuction should not be based solely on finding the “cheapest” procedure. Very cheap lipo usually means that the doctor is not board certified, is less experienced, or does the procedure quickly and incompletely. Surgery that will affect your appearance for years to come is not something you should consider from a “cut rate” doctor.

What Are the Risks of Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgery that does involve anesthesia – so to minimize the risk of complications you should always chose a board certified plastic surgeon who is very experienced with an excellent reputation.

Compared to most surgeries, liposuction is amazingly safe. Very rare problems that can potentially occur are the same as any surgical procedure: infections, bruising, bleeding, and (very infrequently) nerve injury.

Because any anesthesia has certain risks, liposuction using local anesthesia has somewhat fewer risks than lipo using general anesthesia or heavy IV sedation.  Doing too much liposuction at one time can also increase risks. The best way to minimize the risk of complications is to have your lipo performed by a highly experienced, board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali.

male liposuction

Men, Get Ready for the Beach with Liposuction

Bloomfield Hills, MI – With summer in full swing, you’ve likely been inundated with images of scantily-clad models smiling amidst tropical backgrounds. You may think to yourself, I’d gladly pose in my bathing suit if only I could lose those pesky extra pounds.

If, despite trying to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, you find you still have the problem of accumulating fat, liposuction may be an option for you!

While it’s clear that females get lots of cosmetic procedures done, men aren’t always so keen to try it. After all, any Google image search for “plastic surgery” will likely be catered to women. However, men are getting cosmetic surgery at a growing rate, and that trend is only predicted to continue.

“Every year, we’re seeing more and more men opt for procedures like liposuction,” says Detroit-area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali. “Many men find they can achieve the more sculpted, athletic physique they’ve always wanted. It’s great that liposuction gives us that possibility.”

Even though females get the procedure at nearly seven times the rate of men, liposuction remains the number one plastic surgery for both genders. Men tend to accumulate fat around their abdominal area, chest, hips, neck, and chin. Liposuction offers a great option if you’re looking to rid yourself of those few stubborn pounds that just won’t leave.

What Does Liposuction Entail?

Dr. Ali explains, “The beauty of liposuction is that you can directly target the areas of your body where you’d like to lose fat tissue. With this method, we can make sure your problematic areas are rid of this nuisance once and for all.”

The procedure itself is usually done under general anesthesia, though smaller areas might only require intravenous (IV) sedation. Local anesthetic is usually applied to the targeted spots as well, to prevent blood loss during liposuction. A suctioning machine then uses small tubes called cannulas to literally suck the fat from your body.

Variations on this theme include power-assisted liposuction (PAL) and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). PAL utilizes an electric motor that physically breaks up fat, and UAL uses ultrasound energy to melt the fat. Thus, both of these techniques make the fat removal process easier on patient and surgeon alike.

Are There Other Options?

If you find that diet and exercise alone aren’t enough, liposuction (as described above) may be a good choice for you. However, if you don’t want to commit to such a dramatic procedure, there is a newer alternative available.

“Another wonderful technology available today is called CoolSculpting,” says Dr. Ali. “Unlike other options, CoolSculpting freezes fat cells and lets the body eliminate them naturally.”

CoolSculpting is a minimally invasive procedure and doesn’t require any surgery. The downtime may be less than liposuction, yet the results will be similar: a dramatic reduction of fat that will be noticeable and permanent.

Who Should Get These Procedures?

Liposuction and CoolSculpting aren’t for everyone. If you’re already near your ideal weight, but just can’t lose those last few pounds, these procedures are ideal for you. However, they’re not meant to treat obesity, nor should they be seen as a drastic weight loss option.

As with any other procedure, it’s essential that you contact a professional and find out what your choices are.

“With technology improving all the time,” says Dr. Ali, “you might be surprised at all the options available to you!” Time has allowed cosmetic procedures to become remarkably refined, giving you the best chance ever to have your ideal figure.

Be Swimsuit Season Ready This Year with CoolSculpting or Lipo!

Bloomfield Hills, MI– With warmer weather comes more outdoor activity, including trips to the beach or pool. While the word swimsuit may strike fear in the hearts of some, Detroit-area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali is prepared.

“We are lucky to live in a time where many people can attain their ideal body results relatively quickly. With procedures like CoolSculpting and liposuction, virtually anyone can be ready for swimsuit season in very little time,” notes the surgeon.

CoolSculpting

Developed by Harvard University Scientists, CoolSculpting is the only non-surgical fat treatment option approved by the FDA.

“I love offering this treatment to patients, as there is little to no downtime and no surgical procedure is required,” says Dr. Ali. “The best part is, patients experience amazing results that they could not otherwise achieve.”

Candidates for CoolSculpting are those who would like to lose fat in the following areas: flanks, thighs, abdomen, back, and/or under the chin. Those interested in the procedure should be at or near their ideal body weight and have a body mass index (BMI) under 30.

This procedure can be done quickly in a doctor’s office and patients can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. During the procedure, patients are conscious and can read, use electronic devices, or rest.

Since CoolSculpting freezes fat cells, the body will take a few weeks to break down and expel the dead tissue. This means that though patients may not see results in the minutes and hours after their procedure, a dramatic difference will likely be noticed in the upcoming weeks. Fat cells will continue to leave the body for up to six months after the initial treatment.

Liposuction

For those seeking to get rid of stubborn fat that is too difficult to get rid of by diet or exercise, liposuction is another option.

A much more dramatic and invasive procedure than CoolSculpting, liposuction is a surgery that removes deep fat tissue using a device to literally suck the fat out of the body. Any area with fat cells may be targeted, though areas commonly treated are: the abdomen, thighs, back, and upper arms. Performed under general or intravenous sedation, liposuction must be done by an experienced professional for safe and lasting results.

“Liposuction is the most commonly utilized plastic surgery today,” Dr. Ali explains. “Patients generally love the long-lasting results achieved by this technique, and most are able to return to work within a day or two.”

Liposuction results can take up to nine months to fully show, but patients note dramatic changes within a few weeks to months after surgery.

Seeking Professional Care

With summer drawing ever nearer, Dr. Ali reminds patients, “The earlier you consult with a plastic surgeon, the sooner you will achieve your desired results. Remember, some of these procedures can take a few months to give you the body you want.”

What to Expect While You’re Recovering from Liposuction

Bloomfield Hills, MI – A fast and dramatic procedure, liposuction is gaining popularity worldwide. And it’s no wonder: you can lose the fat that diet and exercise alone weren’t able to eliminate. But what happens when you get home? How do you achieve the best possible outcome from your procedure? Award-winning plastic surgeon, Dr. Ali, of Amae Plastic Surgery Center, sheds some light on the matter.

“First and foremost, before you have liposuction, be sure to consult with your doctor about the post-operative care you’ll need,” advises the Detroit-based surgeon. “Be sure to ask any and all questions you have, including whether or not you’ll have stitches, where to get the appropriate compression garments, and how long your recovery is expected to take. As always, communication is key.”

What are the first steps after my liposuction?

Depending on whether you’ve had general or local anesthesia, you’ll likely be out of the medical center 30 minutes to a few hours after your procedure. You’ll want someone who can drive you home, and then you’ll need time to rest in a comfortable environment. Expect to be sore and swollen after the anesthesia wears off.

Sometimes, you will be given pain medication for comfort and possibly antibiotics to prevent infection. It’s also important to walk as soon as you can after the surgery, as this will help prevent blood clots in your legs and lungs. While you should avoid vigorous exercise for a few weeks still, it’s important to keep your circulation going strong.

How long does it take to heal?

“If you’ve had just a small area treated, you should be feeling all right in a day or two. The bruising can last for a little while, usually a few days, and swelling sometimes lasts several weeks or months,” says Dr. Ali. “Luckily, most people can go back to work or school very soon after surgery.”

Of course, recovery times vary significantly from patient to patient. Although bruising and swelling are common at first, you will likely be back to your routine activities within a week or two. You may be surprised that you can jog, golf, and do light exercise fairly shortly after liposuction. After a month or so, you should be feeling back to normal. You can expect to see your final results in one to six months after liposuction after your body has adapted to your slimmer shape.

If at any time in your recovery you feel extreme pain or discomfort, have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or notice any signs of infection like fever or excessive swelling, it’s important to contact your doctor right away. “Though liposuction is now a common procedure, it is still a surgery, and all surgeries have risks,” says Dr. Ali. “It’s important that you communicate any problems to your surgeon immediately so that you receive the best care possible.”

Compression Garments

For the short-term, you’ll need to wear a compression garment to maintain the new contour created by your doctor. This clothing helps your body adapt to its new tissue and reduces looseness in your skin. Such compression also helps reduce swelling, which will speed up your healing process. Expect to wear your garment at least a month after surgery.

Long-Term Care

In the months and years to come, you’ll want to maintain your new body weight as best as you can. While liposuction removes existing fat, it cannot prevent you from gaining new fat cells. Thus, it’s crucial to keep a healthy lifestyle with consistent exercise and a good diet.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has an entire area of their website devoted to liposuction. You can also consult the Food and Drug Administration for more information.

The Final Word on Healing Properly from Liposuction

With liposuction, you can have great control over how your body looks and feels. Since this procedure is very commonly done, you can have a good idea of what to expect after talking with your doctor.

Liposuction Surgery

Your Liposuction Questions Answered

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Thinking about liposuction, but you want to learn more about it first? You’ve come to the right place.

Here are the answers to your most important liposuction questions from one of Michigan’s top plastic surgeons, Dr. M. Azhar Ali.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, improves the contours of your body by removing excess fat deposits that exist between your skin and the muscle underneath. Oftentimes this is fat that has become resistant to diet and exercise.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

In most cases, patients opt to have liposuction on their abdomen, hips, thighs (anterior, outer and inner), breasts, buttocks, arms, knees, and neck.

Is Liposuction Only for Women?

Certainly not. Men make up about 15-25% of all liposuction patients. When men opt to have the procedure, they usually target their abdomens, love handles (flanks), and breasts, but the chin and neck are also sometimes included.

How Many Office Visits Are Required?

If you are having a single area worked on, such as your arms, your plastic surgeon will attempt to complete the procedure in a single session.

However, your plastic surgeon will sometimes recommend that you come back for additional liposuction sections, particularly if you are having more than one area worked on at the same time. Your plastic surgeon will determine if more sessions are necessary by calculating your height and weight and by gauging your overall health.

What is the Recovery Like?

Immediately following surgery, your plastic surgeon will probably require you to wear an elastic compression garment. Think of it as a type of specially made girdle. You will wear this elastic piece to reduce any bleeding that may occur immediately following surgery, as well as to reduce any swelling.

If local anesthesia was used, you will be able to leave the facility about 30 minutes following the procedure. If your plastic surgeon used general anesthesia or IV sedation, you may need an hour or more to fully recover before you are discharged. You should be able to return to work within a couple days’ time.

Are the Results Permanent?

Any fat cells that your plastic surgeon removes during surgery will not grow back. That means that you will have a new body shape after you recover from the procedure.

There will still be fat cells present, and these may be susceptible to weight gain. Your plastic surgeon can provide you with tips to help you manage your weight, which can extend your positive results.

If you happen to gain weight following liposuction surgery, you will appear to be a larger version of your new body shape.

Will I Be Left with Loose Skin?

If your skin has good elasticity, you should be left with smooth and naturally looking skin following liposuction.

If you have excess skin following the procedure, you may want to opt for a tummy tuck instead of liposuction. Your plastic surgeon will determine which procedure you are a good candidate for following your initial consultation.

Are There Any Risks?

Liposuction is a very safe procedure. However, as with any surgical procedure, infection, bleeding, and nerve injury can occur.

The only time liposuction may be risky if is you attempt to do too much liposuction in a single day. Or if you do not follow your plastic surgeon’s advice following surgery.

Listen to your plastic surgeon’s suggestions, in other words, and your procedure will have favorable results like they do for the majority of patients who opt for this procedure worldwide.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The fees you are required to pay may vary depending on how many areas you wish to treat. Treating one area, such as your abdomen, is less expensive than treating your abdomen, arms, and thighs.

If you have more questions about liposuction or you wish to get an accurate fee quote, contact Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Ali today for a consultation.

Can One Liposuction Session Treat All Areas At Once?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – For many of us, we may notice excess fat in a few areas of the body as we age. No matter how hard we exercise or how much we diet, some areas of our body just seem to retain stubborn pockets of fat. Liposuction is an excellent solution to help get rid of that fat that just seems to linger no matter what we do.

But if you have multiple areas that you’d like targeted, can you target them all in just one liposuction session? The answer is yes, and no.

“Liposuction is a very individualized procedure,” says Dr. Ali, a Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon. “The number of procedures each patient will need to meet his or her desired goals is determined on a patient by patient basis. However, it is possible in many cases to target multiple areas at once.”

The deciding factor of whether multiple areas can safely be targeted during one liposuction procedure comes down to the patient. While there isn’t a maximum number of areas that can be target during one session, there is a maximum on the quantity of fat that can be removed in one session. The general rule of thumb is that surgeons should stay at or below five liters of fat removed.

Patients with smaller builds may be able to safely have multiple areas targeted in one session, while those who are larger in stature may require more than one session to safely and effectively remove the desired quantities of fat.

“One of the greatest benefits of liposuction is that we can use it pretty much anywhere on the body,” says Dr. Ali. “The technique has been perfected so that it causes much less trauma than ever before, however, it is important to remember that there will be swelling and slight soreness at the location of any liposuction. Recovery following liposuction of multiple areas could be longer and more uncomfortable.”

When combining liposuction procedures, it is ideal to keep them to what is termed “aesthetic units.” For instance, one session can easily target the stomach, thighs and hips, and even the bra area.

During your consultation, Dr. Ali will discuss with you your goals following the procedure. Then, he can create a customized treatment plan that will ensure the best results for you.

It is important to note that liposuction should not be used as a weight loss method. Patients should be at or near their ideal weight, but with stubborn pockets of fat that just don’t respond to traditional diet or exercise. If you are interested in reducing fat across your entire body, it would be wise to first begin a weight loss program. Once you reach your desired weight, if you find you have areas that still retain localized pockets of fat, schedule a consultation to learn about the benefits of liposuction.

Cellulite - bad skin condition

Areas You Never Knew Could Look So Good

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Most people have a problem area or two that they’d love to get rid of. If the idea of plastic surgery or a tummy tuck doesn’t sound appealing, there might be another solution. There are several areas of the body that liposuction can have a big impact on.

“Liposuction is a great option for many patients who don’t need a more invasive procedure, or who just have a small area to correct,” says Dr. Ali, a plastic surgeon in Michigan. “From your face, to your belly, to even your ankles, we can remove excess fat and have you looking and feeling better than ever in no time.”

Do you suffer from what is known as “cankles?” When you wear shorts, if you don’t have a clear, beautiful and elegant transition from your calf to your ankles, you may have cankles. And that can be a source of embarrassment for some. But liposuction is a great way to trim out the excess fat, and give you back graceful lines and shapelier legs.

Even with the best workout routine and attention to diet, we can develop stubborn areas of fat the refuse to go away. And as we age, we may notice that happening more around our midsections. If you have a small area, often known as a muffin top, that just doesn’t respond to diet or exercise, liposuction can help.

Liposuction is also a great option for your upper torso or back. Do you have areas of fat that bulge out from your bra? Liposuction can target those areas, removing the fat and making a smooth, beautifully contoured look.

Do you see a double chin when you look in the mirror. Liposuction can slim the jawline and neck area, making you look both thinner and younger.

Are you interested in a breast reduction, but aren’t excited about a serious surgery and scars? Liposuction may be able to sculpt away fatty tissue, leaving you with a more manageable profile. However, liposuction cannot be used for large reductions, only smaller reshaping procedures.

If you are a male who is embarrassed to take your shirt off at the pool because of enlarged breasts, known as gynecomastia, liposuction is a great solution for you. It can give you the appearance of a firmer and more muscular looking chest.

Another area that is gaining popularity for liposuction is the calf. Skinny jeans are all the rage, and many women don’t like the way their calves look in them. A little liposuction can contour the calf, creating a beautifully sculpted leg.

To achieve your desired look, it’s important to follow all after care instructions provided by your plastic surgeon. Compression garments will be worn to control swelling and ensure the skin compresses to the new contours the liposuction created.

Recovery time will depend on the specific area you had liposuction performed on, but it can take a few months for the swelling to completely go away. But as the swelling disappears, you’ll be thrilled with your new look and can confidently take on the world.

Get Bikini Body Ready Now!

Bloomfield Hills, MI – The temperatures may be dropping outside, but if you are thinking you might want to have plastic surgery before summer rolls back around, now is actually the perfect time to do it.

“Getting bikini body ready can’t happen overnight,” says Dr. Ali, a Michigan plastic surgeon. “And if you aren’t seeing the results you want after diet and exercise, and are thinking about a cosmetic procedure, it’s important that you take into account recovery time. Recovery from most procedures isn’t instantaneous, and you’ll want to be sure you are pain-free before scheduling vacations or beach trips. So the earlier you plan your surgeries, the better.”

So what are the top surgeries that can help you be ready for summer?

1. Liposuction
Lipo slims and reshapes specific areas of the body through removal of fat deposits. It also can improve the proportion and contour of your body. The best areas for liposuction are the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, upper arms, inner knee, back, neck and chin, calves, and ankles. It can take several months for the swelling associated with liposuction to fully subside, so be sure you plan your procedure accordingly.

2. Breast augmentation
If you would like fuller breasts to fill out your bikini this year, a breast augmentation can provide beautiful results. The initial recovery period is several days, but it can take a few weeks for the pain and swelling to subside, and for you to see the final results.

3. Breast lift
Breast lift procedures continue to increase in popularity for women who simply want to rejuvenate their appearance. The procedure will not significantly change the size or shape of the breast, but will help a woman regain the youthful appearance and firmness of her breasts. It can take a month or more for all swelling and bruising to go away and for the results to be visible.

4. Brazilian butt lift
If you want a fuller, rounder butt to fill out your bikini bottom, a Brazilian butt lift is your answer. Fat is removed from other areas of your body, and re-injected into your buttocks. The result is a fuller, rounder and lifted bottom that is beach ready. It can take at least three weeks to recover from a butt lift procedure, during which time you can’t sit on your backside.

5. Tummy tuck
A tummy tuck is a great way to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen, while also stretngthening weakened or stretched stomach muscles. The result is a smoother and firmer looking belly. Many women, especially those who have had children, love the results a tummy tuck can provide. Recovery from an abdominoplasty can take a few weeks.

“It’s ideal to have one of these procedures a couple of months prior to wanting to be bikini ready,” says Dr. Ali. “That way, you have allowed yourself ample time to fully recover, you will no longer experience any pain or swelling, and your incision will have begun to heal and fade.”

If you have tried diet and exercise and just can’t get the results you want, cosmetic surgery can provide you with the look you’ve worked hard for. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Ali today.

How To Ensure Liposuction Lasts

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Are you considering liposuction but are worried about how long the effects of the procedure might last? Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures, but there are some things to keep in mind before and after to ensure its success. Dr. Ali, a Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon, offers some tips for patients.

What you should know before liposuction:

  1. Liposuction should never be used as a weight loss tool. You simply cannot lose a significant amount of weight through a liposuction procedure. Liposuction should only be performed on patients who are at or near an ideal weight, and to remove stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise, and to contour these hard to manage areas.
  2. Obese patients are not ideal candidates for liposuction. Liposuction should never be performed on someone who is extremely overweight and all candidates should have good skin elasticity and skin tone. This will ensure minimal irregularities in contour.
  3. Liposuction does not get rid of cellulite.
  4. Liposuction is not the same as a tummy tuck and cannot provide the same results. If you are looking to get rid of extra skin, stretch marks or re-strengthen your abdominal muscles after childbirth, a tummy tuck is the only way to do that. Liposuction can be used in conjunction with a tummy tuck, however, to remove excess fat.

How can you guarantee the results of your tummy tuck last?
Studies have shown that patients who undergo liposuction may be three times more likely to gain back weight following their procedure if they do not follow a diet and exercise program. Those who do follow a healthy diet post-procedure are more likely to lose weight after their procedure.

“These studies tell us something plastic surgeons have been telling our patients for year,” says Dr. Ali. “And that is that liposuction alone cannot fix a weight problem. To maintain positive weight loss, or maintain your ideal weight, liposuction should always be paired with healthy diet and exercise plans. Liposuction is not meant to be used as a weight loss tool.”

Liposuction is intended to reshape and contour areas of the body that diet and exercise can’t help. For some people, even the most rigorous diet and exercise plans don’t give them the results they want. For women, the most common areas are the hips and thighs, while men often have problems losing that last bit of fat around their midsections. And that’s where liposuction can help – it can contour and smooth these areas to get these problem areas more in sync with the rest of the body.

“Liposuction was never meant to be a cure-all,” says Dr. Ali. “The best results are in patients who are committed to a healthy lifestyle. If you make poor choices following your liposuction procedure, your results will be impacted. Committing yourself to a healthy lifestyle is the best way to ensure your results are lasting.”

If you’re interested in learning more about what liposuction can do for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ali today.

Is Winter a Good Season for Cosmetic Procedures?

While it is safe to get cosmetic surgeries and procedures done at any time of the year, many people favor the winter and spring months. There are quite a few benefits to selecting the cooler months to take the steps to your best self!

Are you considering a surgery like breast augmentation or liposuction? The colder months may be the best time, as it’s easier to conceal swelling and wraps under bulkier clothing. Additionally as it’s typically a more sedentary time of year, it’s more conducive to resting and healing.

Perhaps you are doing something topical like a chemical peel? The winter months are perfect, as not only does this procedure allow you to get rid of the dry, dull winter skin but it also makes it easier to avoid direct sunlight during recovery. And, if you have kids, recovery is much easier if they’re still in school.

And finally, making improvements in the winter months insures you’re ready to go when spring arrives.
