Five Things You Didn’t Know About Breast Implants
Five Things You Didn’t Know About Breast Implants
–
1. Breast implants have been around since the 1960s!
Is that why all of those mid-century beauties on Mad Men have such fantastic curves? Dow Corning Corporation, developed the first silicone breast implants in 1962.
The first recipient of breast implants, Timmie Jean Lindsey, is now over 80 years old – and she still has her original implants!
.
2. Early breast implants weren’t tested.
The Food and Drug Administration did not require the makers of breast implants to undergo safety testing until 1991.
Over 1,000,000 women had undergone breast implant surgery before the FDA began to require proof of their safety in 1991. While there were some complications caused by these untested breast implants, manufacturers of today’s breast implants undergo rigorous testing and FDA approval procedures.
As a result, today’s breast implants are as safe as they are beautiful.
.
2. Silicone breast implants were once only used for medical purposes.
Between the years 1992 and 2006, silicone breast implants were only allowed to be implanted in women after a mastectomy, or in women who needed to fix a previously implanted broken implant.
After huge improvements in breast implant technology – and rigorous safety testing – silicone breast implants were approved for use in the USA in 2006. These new generations of FDA approved silicone breast implants are exceptionally natural looking and feeling, as well as extremely safe.

3. Saline vs. Silicone is like Coke vs. Pepsi.
There are two types of breast implant filler: saline and silicone. Each has their distinct advantages and – like Coke and Pepsi drinkers – people have their own personal reasons for choosing a favorite.
Silicone breast implants tend to look and feel more real and natural – especially the latest technologies in MemoryShape breast implants which we use in our plastic surgery practice.
However, some women prefer saline because they can be filled more, or depleted a little, so a patient has the option of changing their breast implant size. Typically, saline implants are also less expensive – starting in our office at a total low cost of only $5,000 including all surgical expenses!
.
4. It can be too early – but it’s never too late – for breast implants!
The FDA recommends that you have to be 22 years old to get breast implants – but most people don’t realize that there is no upper age limit!
In cases where an unscrupulous surgeon puts silicone breast implants in an “under-aged” patient, there can be complications affecting the woman’s growth – and the warranty on the implants may also be waived.
However, as long as a woman is in good health with sufficient, healthy skin, even senior citizens can get breast implants.
Marie Jolstad, a healthy 84 year old widow with 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, is believed to be the oldest woman to ever get breast implants.
.
5. Surgeons in the U.S. perform the most breast implant surgeries.
Breast augmentation surgery is the number one most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States. Approximately 300,000 breast augmentations were performed in 2017 in the USA. And the number of breast implants is currently growing at a rate of 3% a year.
This growth is attributable to the fact that breast implants are safer, more natural looking and more affordable than ever before!
Brazil comes in second place for the most breast implant surgeries performed annually. And Mexico hits the list in third place.
