Vaginal Rejuvenation in Younger Women after Childbirth

Clinical Studies Prove Effectiveness of Vaginal Rejuvenation in Younger Women after Childbirth

Due to a number of causes – from childbirth and aging, to reduced hormone production, to genetics or even trauma – the vagina can become loose and lax over time. The result is often stress urinary incontinence (bladder leaks), itching, burning and dryness, decreased sensation during sex, and painful intercourse.

Previously, these conditions could only be treated with ongoing hormone therapy, or painful surgery with a long recovery period. Recently, however, surgical procedures, medications and topical creams have been replaced with new, noninvasive, energy-based systems of vaginal rejuvenation called Viveve® .

Viveve® vaginal rejuvenation is a relatively new, non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that is now available for women seeking to revitalize and strengthen the elasticity of the vaginal walls and improve the natural lubrication of their vaginal tissue. The Viveve® vaginal rejuvenation treatment uses a proprietary form of radiofrequency based energy to remodel collagen and restore the tissue in the vaginal.

After just a single Viveve® vaginal rejuvenation treatment in our Detroit area office, patients typically report decreased bladder leaks, improved vaginal tightness and lubrication, increased sexual sensation, and elimination of pain during intercourse. But don’t just take our word for it! There is also plenty of clinical research supporting the effectiveness of Viveve® vaginal rejuvenation.

Vaginal Rejuvenation & Childbirth

One of the most common causes of a loose, lax, thinned, or dry vagina is vaginal childbirth. The stretching and related trauma of delivering a child through the vaginal canal often leads to strected or thinned vaginal tissue.

Two clinical reports have been published demonstrating the effectiveness of Viveve® vaginal rejuvenation device for treating vaginal laxity following vaginal child birth in women before menopause.

Viveve® Vaginal Rejuvenation Study #1

A pilot clinical study was conducted on 24 women who had delivered children vaginally. The women were between the ages of 25 and 44 years. Reverse gradient radiofrequency energy was delivered through the “vaginal mucosa” (tissue).

Results from the study showed that after only 1 month after vaginal radiofrequency treatment, 67% of the women reported that vaginal tightness had already significantly improved. By 6 months almost 90% of the patients reported a substantial improvement in vaginal tightness.

Additionally, the women also reported that their sexual function had improved. And absolutely no adverse effects or complications were reported during the vaginal rejuvenation study.

Viveve® Vaginal Rejuvenation Study #2

In another clinical study, 30 pre-menopausal women between the ages of 21 and 52 were treated with a single 30-min office treatment using Viveve® radiofrequency Vaginal Rejuvenation. 100% of the patients reported a significant improvement in sexual function at 6 months after treatment, and all of the women also reported a decrease in discomfort and/or pain during sex.

Every participant in the clinical study also reported a decrease vaginal laxity (looseness) within the first month after the treatment, as well as sustained vaginal tightening through 12 months.

Board certified plastic surgeon Doctor Ali stays on the cutting edge of the latest prevention, treatment, and management strategies for women’s vaginal health and wellbeing. Viveve® radiofrequency Vaginal Rejuvenation treatment enables women and their physicians to have another treatment option to consider, while weighing the associated risks and benefits.

How to Improve Healing After Liposuction (Part 1)

12 Steps to Faster Healing & Less Downtime After Liposuction

Liposuction is a quite commonly performed permanent fat loss procedure – with more than 250,000 lipo procedures performed in the United States every year. The reason for liposuction’s popularity is the amazing body contouring that takes place – giving people the body they haven’t been able to attain with diet or exercise.

And, while the downtime with liposuction is relatively short (and the pain is relatively minimal), lipo is a surgical procedure that does require time for healing and recovery. As with any surgery there will be some bruising and discomfort for a number of days or a few weeks afterward. And, liposuction swelling can last from 6 weeks to 6 months before fully absorbed.

Patients should never try to “rush” recovery, but there are certain steps one can take to help the body’s natural healing process along. In this article, board-certified Troy, MI area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains some steps you can take to help minimize soreness and accelerate the healing of bruising and swelling after liposuction.

#1. Follow the Liposuction Surgeon’s After Care Instructions

This is the most important step to proper and rapid healing. Your surgeon’s advice may be different than general information found on the Internet.

#2. Wear Your Compression Garment After Liposuction as Instructed

You will be provided with a compression garment and instructions on when to wear it. Your compression garment will help reduce swelling, help the skin contract back into place, minimize discomfort and reduce the likelihood of developing blood clots. Always wear it as instructed!

#3. Avoid Smoking After Liposuction

Smoking interferes with the body’s healing mechanisms and can lead to a slow recovery as well as increase the risks of complications. Smoking also compromises a patient’s immune system which increases the risk of infection at the incision site.

Even smoking just a single cigarette decreases the body’s ability to deliver the nutrients that are necessary for healing after surgery.

#4. Avoid Alcohol After Liposuction

Alcohol, even in moderation, can also interfere with the body’s ability to reduce the inflammation.

Alcohol is also a natural blood thinner, so it can lead to increased bleeding and swelling during surgery – and in the days and weeks following liposuction. And excessive bruising and increased swelling cause more pain and delay healing time.

#5. Increase Protein, Fruits and Vegetables After Liposuction

Proper healing requires good nutrition – especially sufficient protein intake. Fish such as salmon, chicken, nuts, and beans are all excellent sources of protein. Apples, berries, bananas, and an assortment of colorful vegetables will also supply the body with the nutrients it needs to heal.

Salt intake should also be reduce after liposuction – as salt encourages water retention which aggravates swelling. And more swelling means both more pain and a longer time until you see results! This also means NO sports drinks (like Gatorade), vegetable juice (like V8), or other high salt-content drinks.

#6. Supplements May Help Heal After Liposuction

Starting Arnica supplements before liposuction and continuing it for several weeks afterwards can aid in healing.

After lipo surgery Bromelain supplements may also be beneficial. Clinical studies have shown that Bromelain may reduce swelling, bruising, healing time, and pain after surgery. One 200-milligram bromelain tablets taken twice a day is the typically recommended dose for post surgical patients. But ask your liposuction team if and when Bromelain is right for you. Bromelain generally works best when taken on an empty stomach.

Turmeric supplements – or use of the spice turmeric in your food – may also assist in reducing inflammation. 400 to 600 milligrams (mg) of turmeric up to three times per day is the generally suggested dose for inflammation relief.

But always heck with your surgeon to ensure that these – or any post-surgery supplements you wish to take – are safe for you.

How to Improve Healing After Liposuction (Part 2)

12 Steps to Faster Healing & Less Downtime After Liposuction

With more than 250,000 liposuction surgeries performed in the United States every year, it is a safe and effective way to get the body you’ve always wanted.

But while the downtime associated with liposuction is shorter than many surgeries – and the pain is relatively minimal – lipo is still a surgical procedure that will require time for healing and recovery. As with any surgery there will be some bruising and discomfort for a number of days or a few weeks afterward. And, liposuction swelling can last from 6 weeks to 6 months before fully absorbed.

In this two part article article, board-certified Troy, MI area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali shares 12 steps you can take to help minimize discomfort and speed up the healing of bruising and swelling after liposuction.

CLICK HERE FOR PART 1 of TIPS TO SPEED UP LIPOSUCTION HEALING

#7. Topical Creams Reduce Pain, Bruising & Scarring

Applying Arnica Cream is recommended by many plastic surgeons after liposuction to reduce bruising and promote healing.

Emu Oil, though more expensive, is also touted as a natural healing compound that can reduce pain, improve circulation, facilitate healing, and especially reduce any scarring. Clinical studies have determined that post-operative skin care treatment with Emu Oil can accelerate healing due to its ability to reduce inflammation and redness of scars.

Ask your liposuction team when it is safe after surgery for you to use these creams and oils.

#8. Stay Hydrated After Liposuction

We may be stating the obvious, but hydration is a key component of successful liposuction recovery.  Fluids help the body eliminate anesthetic and dead fat cells from one’s system. Hydration is also essential to reduce swelling and promote healing.

#9. Get Plenty of Rest After Liposuction

Getting plenty of sleep and not overdoing activity in the first few weeks following your liposuction is one of the best ways to help your body heal. Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night, and take a nap, chill out, or medicate midday if you are fatigued.

#10. Walk Every Day After Liposuction

Exercise is not recommended during at least the first 6 weeks of liposuction recovery, but light movement multiple times a day can help to speed the body’s healing. Taking short walks a few times per day is a great way to get moving without straining your body or exhausting yourself.

After two or three weeks milder activities such as yoga or swimming can often be resumed as well, if incisions are fully healed. Ask your liposuction team when you mave resume these activities. But sooner is usually better, to keep the body active!

#11. Ask for Help When You Need It After Liposuction

Some daily activities are best left to others while you recovery – so don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it after lipo. Activities such as lifting small children, carrying laundry up the stairs, or unloading groceries from the car can put too much strain on your treatment area. So, ask a family member or friend for help when necessary – especially during the first few weeks after lipo!

Your liposuction team can advise you when you resume normal daily activities such as lifting, carrying, exercising and other strenuous activities.

#12, Massage After Liposuction

Finally, both self-massage and lymphatic drainage massage performed by a professional can help eliminate fluid buildup, hard stops and “lumps & bumps” after liposuction. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage is a specialized form of massage that is believed to decrease recovery time and improve results by reducing post-surgical swelling and minimizing fibrosis (scar tissue formation). Three to five lymphatic massage treatments are typically recommended for optimal results, but patients may experience benefits from as few as one or two treatments. Your surgical team may be able to recommend a Certified Lymphatic Massage therapist in your area.

Gentle self-massage using a cream (like arnica or Emu Oil) or a body butter can also help your treated areas heal smoothly as well as reduce swelling, tightness, and discomfort after liposuction. Your liposuction team can advise you when and how often self-massage or professional massage should be started.

What Pain to Expect During Liposuction Recovery: (Part 1)

How Much Pain Is There After Liposuction Surgery?

Liposuction is the second most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S. for a reason – it can truly transform your body in a single procedure with minimal pain and downtime. Every year surgeons perform more than a quarter million liposuction procedures in the United States every year.

For, many people the only thing holding them back from getting liposuction is concerns about recovery: from worries about downtime and missing work to apprehensions about post-operative pain.

Board-certified Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali has performed more than 1000 liposuction procedures. In this article the lipo experts at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI explain what to expect during the recovery process – so you can decide if liposuction is right for you.

Liposuction Recovery in General

To begin with, remember that ANY surgical recovery varies from one individual to the next. Your age, overall health, skin condition, medical history all play a role in determining your recover speed and comfort.

Additionally, the location and amount of fat that is removed will play a role in your recovery. It’s common sense that more extensive fat removal will require a longer recovery.

And, perhaps most importantly, how well you follow post-operative care instructions can be the biggest factor in ensuring a shorter and more comfortable recovery. For example, smoking and alcohol use during recovery can lead to delays and complications.

Pain During Liposuction Surgery

Patients may feel pressure, but will not feel any pain during their liposuction surgery. This is because will we administer an oral sedative, as well as local anesthetic. The fluid that is introduced to the body during liposuction has lidocaine (numbing agent) right in it, so the treatment area is completely numbed on the inside, as well.

Additionally, thanks to the oral sedative, many patients sleep through the entire lipo procedure and aren’t even aware of what is going on!

Liposuction Recovery: Pain Management

As with any surgery, during the first week or two of recovery, you can expect moderate pain and soreness. The amount and location of the fat removal will affect this to some extent.

We will give you a prescription for a pain medication that should be filled before the surgery and kept at home for use (if needed) during your recovery to make this discomfort manageable. Many patients only need pain medication for 24 hours after surgery – while others may opt to treat the discomfort with Extra Strength Tylenol rather than narcotics.

Limit your activity during this time and wear your compression garment as directed. The compression garment will help prevent swelling and make you much more comfortable – even though it may restrict your movements somewhat.

Normal activities like bending, sitting for a long time, climbing stairs, rolling over in bed, etc. may still cause discomfort for the first two weeks. Most patients find this very tolerable with Extra Strength Tylenol. And our Birmingham, MI patients universally say the discomfort was 100% worth getting a new body that they love!

By the end of the second week there will be a significant reduction in pain and soreness. Around the one-month mark is when most patients no longer feel any pain or soreness. There will still be swelling, which can take several weeks or months to completely subside.

Around the fourth week, most people are cleared to resume light exercise – however heavy or strenuous activity should still be avoided for the full 6 week recovery period. By the six-week mark the majority of bruising and swelling should have subsided, and patients’ activity levels is no longer be restricted (unless otherwise ordered by your surgeon). And your new body contours should be becoming very visible by this point.

What to Expect During Liposuction Recovery: Downtime (Part 2)

How Much Downtime is there after Liposuction?

Liposuction Recovery: “Downtime”

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so patients almost always go home the same day. You will be very drowsy and will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Most patients sleep or dose most of their first day home.

For about 24 hours there will also be some drainage from the surgical sight. This is very normal. Occasionally Dr. Ali may also use small drains to prevent fluid from building up around the incisions. (We will tell you exactly how to care for them.)

Patients are typically quite sore and likely still feeling residual effects of the anesthesia or pain medication for the next 2 days – so it’s not safe to drive, operate machinery, or go out alone for 48 hours. But walking for 10 minutes every 2 hours can help with the soreness a bit and is also important to prevent the development of blood clots (DVTs).

It’s important to enlist help around the house for the first few days, especially if you have young children to care for!

By the third day most patients are up to gentle daily activities like fixing meals or straightening up the house.

Liposuction Recovery: Time Off Work

Some patients with a “desk job” that does not require strenuous activity, lifting, carrying or prolonged standing may even be able to go back to work on the third day. However, it is very important to get up and move or walk for 10 minutes every couple of hours to prevent blood clots.

This means lipo on a Friday and returning to work on Monday is possible for some (but not all) patients with sedentary jobs. You will still be quite sore on day 3 – so gauge your time off from work accordingly. Dr. Ali can help you with this during your first consultation.

Most people can return to work after a week. But patients with a particularly physical or demanding job, may want to schedule 2 weeks off in order to recover more fully. Discuss the type of work that you do with Dr. Ali during your consultation at our Birmingham, MI office. He will be able to help you assess the amount of time you should schedule off work – based on the extent of your liposuction surgery and the type of work that you perform.

Top 4 Trends in Plastic Surgery for 2022

Top 5 Trends in Plastic Surgery for 2022

Interest and demand for plastic surgery is continuing to grow in 2022. Skilled plastic surgeons such as board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area are in high demand! Plastic surgery helps patients achieve their cosmetic goals and interest in plastic surgery is predicted to continue its upward trend. Patients are seeking plastic surgery for many different reasons, but our plastic surgery experts have forecasted the top 5 trends in plastic surgery this year in the article below.

Top Plastic Surgery Trend 1: Body Contouring

Many patients are seeking surgical intervention for fat removal, loss of breast tissue and volume, and overall better physical appearance. Body contouring procedures such as tummy tucks, breast augmentation, and liposuction are now trending more than ever.

With many different types of body contouring plastic surgeries, patients can select the treatment option that is right for them based upon cosmetic goals and surgical downtime. Physicians who are skilled in body contouring procedures are in demand and finding a plastic surgeon who is experienced, skilled, trusted and provides a comfortable, safe environment is important. Make sure to choose a highly experienced board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali at AMAE Med Spa in the Troy, MI area if you are seeking body contouring or other plastic surgery procedures!

Top Plastic Surgery Trend 2: Ear Pinning

Ear pining, or otoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that is trending now. An otoplasty allows the plastic surgeon to address the shape, size, and position of the ears. Ear pinning focused on the position of the ear and the proximity to the head. Ear pinning procedures can take from 1 – 3 hours depending on the concerns being addressed and the individual patient.

An incision is made at the back of the ear, and the tissue in the area is manipulated. This manipulating can include shaping the cartilage or skin or removing it all together. This allows for pinning the ear closer to the head. The incision is then closed with stitches.

Top Plastic Surgery Trend 3: More Men are Seeking Plastic Surgery

According to Allure magazine, there is a rise in men seeking plastic surgery as the stigma around it is decreased through more exposure in the news and on social media.

When people think of plastic surgery, they commonly think of women having cosmetic procedures to enhance appearance, but more men are getting the appearance they desire with plastic surgery in 2022. This is a result of news coverage and social media openly discussing plastic surgery procedures and how they can benefit men and women. This open conversation has allowed male patients to feel confident in their choice to move forward with plastic surgery.

Top Plastic Surgery Trend 4: Procedure Multitasking

Plastic surgery should be a customized experience, achieved through efficient communication and treatment with a skilled, board certifies  plastic surgeon. But the trend of procedure multitasking is an extremely customized approach to plastic surgery, combining many procedures at once to create a sense of a complete change.

Since patients do not want to be under anesthesia multiple times, they are taking this approach. Instead of undergoing multiple extensive plastic surgery procedures, plastic surgeons are approaching cosmetic concerns through a combination of many targeted plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures to help patients get to their goal faster.

Top Plastic Surgery Trend 5:  Social Media

The previous 4 plastic surgery trends, and many other conversations around plastic surgery, are heavily influenced by social media activity. As more men and women take to social platforms to discuss plastic surgery procedures and educate their followers on the plastic surgery procedures they have undergone, there is much less stigma around the idea of plastic surgery to get the appearance you want.

This open narrative centering around plastic surgery has a heavy influence on the type of trends seen in plastic surgery. Open minded approaches to plastic surgery are great, but it is important to remember to choose a highly skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon with proven results. Dr. Ali is a board-certified plastic surgeon at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area who can help you achieve your desired plastic surgery results!

Plastic surgery is becoming more common for men. As the stigmatized treatment of men getting plastic surgery is being eliminated, men are more comfortable seeking out a plastic surgeon and learning about the plastic surgery options available to them.

Just as women seek plastic surgery for help with concerns related to body changes and the aging process, men are also beginning to learn about plastic surgery procedures that can help them look and feel their best.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, millions of men are now partaking in plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures. In fact, since 2000, there has been a greater than 29% increase in plastic surgery amongst men.

For male patients that are new to the plastic surgery field of medicine, our plastic surgery team has compiled a list of the top 10 plastic surgery procedures for men this year.

#1. Rhinoplasty Plastic Surgery for Men

A rhinoplasty, or plastic surgery to the nose, can be for both cosmetic and functional improvements. This type of plastic surgery is often completed by breaking bone within the nose for the purpose of reshaping. Rhinoplasty will require a man to wear a splint for approximately one week. It also involves a significant amount of swelling once the bandaging is removed.

Rhinoplasty is a type of plastic surgery that can leave men with drastic changes in appearance. While recovering can take up to a full year, the results prove to be worth it for male patients. Plus, advancements in technologies are making this plastic surgery easier!

#2. Chin or Jaw Implants Plastic Surgery for Men

A strong jaw is a desired aesthetic for many men. For this reason, chin and jaw implants are trending as a plastic surgery treatment for men. Through an incision behind the mouth or jaw, the implants are placed through the bottom of the chin. These implants help with improvement to the structure of the face for men.

Men may want to increase the appearance of masculinity through this plastic surgery procedure. After just two to three weeks, men will notice a change from chin or jaw implants. The recovery process typically takes about 6 months. But men are happy to move through recovery to achieve the desired results and look and feel great!

#3. Tummy Tuck Plastic Surgery for Men

A tummy tuck is a type of plastic surgery that addresses loose skin and tightens abdominal muscles. It is superior to liposuction, as it provides a more comprehensive approach beyond fat removal. The tummy tuck is a type of plastic surgery that is common for both men and women, as there are many factors that can lead to the abdomen being a problem area for patients. Due to the aging process and changes in lifestyle, stubborn fat and muscle changes can be very frustrating. For many male patients, this type of plastic surgery can help them achieve the body of their dreams.

Men who elect to have a tummy tuck will need to avoid strenuous activity and exercise during the healing process. The results of a tummy tuck are long lasting and can be seen immediately.

For men in the Troy, MI area, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali can discuss treatment plans for a tummy tuck and other plastic surgery options. Contact AMAE Plastic Surgery for a consultation.

#4. Eyelid Lift Plastic Surgery for Men

An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that reconstructs the eyelid. The procedure is relatively short, lasting only 45 minutes or less. But it is a common plastic surgery procedure for male patients. The recovery time for an eyelid lift is usually 5-7 days Some bruising can be expected with this type of plastic surgery, especially for men who are focused on the lower eyelids.

#5. Breast Reduction Plastic Surgery for Men

Due to hormonal changes, some men may experience issues with enlarged breast tissue. Studies show that as many as 1/3 of men may experience this tissue enlargement issue, also known as Gynecomastia. Plastic surgery can be used to reduce this tissue and help men feel more confident in their bodies. Recovery following a breast or chest reduction lasts several months. But results can be seen instantly and will continue to improve as swelling goes down.

#6. Brow lift Plastic Surgery for Men

A brow lift is a type of plastic surgery procedure that can help men look younger and more awake. It helps to reduce the signs of aging around the forehead. A brow lift has several different options, from full to mini. The specific type of plastic surgery needed is dependent upon the patients desired results. Brow lifts can take up to one hour and usually only cause mild discomfort and swelling. The incision for a brow lift can range from a full incision across the hairline to endoscopic options. Results from a brow lift are usually present for 10 – 15 years. Male patients who choose this type of plastic surgery typically only have the procedure once.

#7. Facelift Plastic Surgery for Men

A facelift is a type of plastic surgery men are electing to undergo to tighten and remove excess skin on their face. The tissue on the face can be reshaped and contoured, which gives men a more taut, younger appearance.

A facelift is a plastic surgery that yields major results, but the longevity of a facelift is impacted by lifestyle. Factors such as sun exposure, tobacco usage, and genetics can impact how long a man will see results. Facelifts do require sutures and some swelling and bruising is possible. Recovery usually lasts around 3 weeks.

#8. Neck lift Plastic Surgery for Men

A neck lift is another type of plastic surgery the makes a man look younger through tightening and removal of excess skin. Neck lifts remove loose skin and fat through incisions made in the area of the sideburns. For men, the neck lift is more common than the facelift! For men who undergo a neck lift, it can take roughly two weeks before swelling settles down enough for a man to feel comfortable going out in public. Swelling will continue to resolve over the course of around six months. Plastic surgeons typically recommend not overdoing it with a neck lift, as a more underdone appearance will help to achieve a natural looking result.

#9. Fat Grafting  Plastic Surgery for Men

Fat grafting is a type of plastic surgery where the plastic surgeon removes fat from one area of the body and redistributes it to a new area. An example of a type of plastic surgery that utilizes fat grafting is a Brazilian butt lift.

Men most commonly receive fat grafting in the cheeks, temples, and nasolabial fold. Fat grafting is a plastic surgery procedure that has very minimal downtime. Men typically return to normal activity the following day. But they can expect some swelling.

#10. Buccal Fat Removal Plastic Surgery for Men

Buccal fat removal is a type of plastic surgery that removes fat from the face. While this type of plastic surgery has most commonly been seen in women, it is now becoming more prevalent in men. The goal of buccal fat removal is to help the face appear more defined by reducing the fat directly under the cheek bone. Men who want a more sculpted look would benefit from buccal fat removal. This procedure is very short – around 20 minutes – and men can return to normal activity the following day!

Should I Get a Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?

Which is Better for Me: Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?

Tummy tuck surgery and less-invasive liposuctions can both help a man or woman get the flat, toned mid-section they want. But they are very different procedures, and each has pros and cons. Understanding these differences can help patients understand which is right for them.

In this article, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali, at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area outlines some of the difference, as well as the advantages and disadvantages, of tummy tuck surgery and liposuction.

Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction: Anesthetic

Since liposuction is far less invasive, it can typically be performed under local anesthetic. This means the specific treatment area can be numbed and the procedure performed while the patient is awake, but mildly sedated with relaxing medication.

Alternatively, a tummy tuck is a much more extensive surgical procedure that must be performed under general anesthesia. Patients are “put under” for a tummy tuck and are not awake.

Of course, any procedure performed under general anesthesia will always carry more risk than one done under local anesthesia. But choosing an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon helps to reduce risks associated with a general anesthesia – so complications are very rare.

Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction: Surgery

Liposuction removes stubborn, excess fat that is stored between the muscle and skin. But there is no change or tightening to the skin at all. Depending on the amount of fat removed during liposuction, the skin will need to tighten on its own. Additionally, liposuction does not tighten the abdominal muscles.

On the other hand, a tummy tuck not only removes unwanted fat, but also excises excess skin and tightens abdominal muscles.

Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction: Scars

Liposuction will only leave very tiny scars that are typically barely visible and will fade with time.

There are a few options when it comes to a tummy tuck – full or mini – that determine the degree of scarring. The full tummy tuck, with removal of excess skin and muscle tightening, means a larger incision is necessary. A skilled board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali will typically place the scar strategically over the bikini line, where it is less visible.

The mini tuck – which does not require muscle repair or substantial skin removal – has less scaring than a full means a larger incision typically placed over the bikini line. This larger incision allows for. But is still more scarring than liposuction.

Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction: Downtime

Downtime is dependent on the type of Tummy Tuck (full or mini) a patient selects. But in general, after about two weeks, most patients can return to light exercise and driving. Depending on the type of employment, patients can expect to turn to work within 2-3 weeks. It’s important to consider how demanding duties are before determining the best time to resume work.

Liposuction downtime is far less, ranging from only 2 to 7 days. Since liposuction involves much less discomfort and swelling, some patients may even return to light activity in as soon as 2-3 days. They can also expect to resume normal activities shortly after.

Recovery periods should be evaluated by the plastic surgeon, to ensure the best decision is made for the patient’s specific case. At AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area, Dr. Ali works closely with patients to develop a specific post procedure recovery plan.

Is a Tummy Tuck or Liposuction Better for Me?

Liposuction is a procedure for patients within 30% of their ideal weight who need help getting rid of pockets of stubborn fat. Candidates for this procedure tend to have healthy skin and muscle and expect skin to firm up following removal of fat.

However, a tummy tuck is the best procedure for individuals with excess fat and loose or excess skin in their midsection, and/or weak or stretched abdominal muscles.

Deciding if You Should Get Liposuction

Is Liposuction Right for Me?

Liposuction is truly the gold-standard in fat reduction and body contouring. While non-invasive fat removal procedures like CoolSculpting are less invasive with shorter recovery times, nothing truly compares to the fat removal capabilities of liposuction.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery Center has helped many people in the Troy, MI area get the body of their dreams with the help of liposuction.

Liposuction is a great option for patients who want to get rid of stubborn fat- but we also understand that it is a big decision in terms of time and finances.

Scheduling a liposuction consultation is the best way to help determine if liposuction is the best fit for your fat loss and body sculpting needs. But before you come in, this article can help you examine some factors to decide if liposuction may be right for you.

Areas That Liposuction Can Treat

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that improves body shape by removing excessive fat stored between the muscles and the skin.  Lipo is especially effective at removing stubborn fat pockets that are often unresponsive to a patient’s diet and training efforts.

Liposuction offers many benefits – one of which is that it can be used to remove unwanted fat almost anywhere on the body including belly, flanks (‘muffin tops’), back, butt, thighs, arms and even the chin.

Liposuction can be performed on both men and women. But there are differences in the most frequently treated areas. For women, liposuction is typically performed on the chin and neck, arms, thighs and buttocks, love handles, and tummy.  While men tend to receive lipo on the waist, love handles and neck.

Good Candidates for Liposuction

Healthy adults within 30% of their ideal weight are the best candidates for liposuction. Having firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone is also recommended – so that the skin “bounces back” after the fat is removed.

Lipo is also excellent for patients who have already achieved a healthy weight but wish to contour the body and remove the final pockets of stubborn fat.

Liposuction is not a surgical modality for obesity or extreme weight lost. If a patient is aiming to lose excessive amounts of weight, even if it is stubborn fat, they will not be an ideal candidate for liposuction.

Individuals with certain serious illnesses or medical conditions that can impair healing are not good candidates for liposuction. So be sure to discuss any underlying health issues with Dr. Ali during your liposuction consultation.

Affording Liposuction

The cost of liposuction will vary based on the number and location of treatment areas. Remember, while a surgeon with less experience may charge lower rates than an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon you get what you pay for.  So cost alone should not be the motivating factor when selecting a liposuction surgeon. Cheap lipo should raise red flags about the surgeon’s skill and standard.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area has performed several hundred liposuctions,  and offers competitive rates and easy financing options.

Risks of Liposuction

When performed by a skilled and experienced board-certified surgeon, liposuction is a very safe procedure, with fewer risks than most surgical procedures. However, it is important for patients to understand that – as with any surgical procedure – some bruising, swelling, and bleeding will occur.

The best way to ensure the safety of your liposuction procedure is to select a board-certified plastic surgeon who is experienced, such as Dr. Ali in the Troy, MI area.

Pain after Liposuction Surgery

Some pain and discomfort are normal after liposuction. Everyone heals differently, so the level of pain is dependent upon the individual patient, the location of the procedure, and their unique body. Typically, in the first 2 – 4 days after lipo the patient will be most sore, but discomfort will significantly decrease soon after. Soreness may be present for up to 8 weeks.

Dr. Ali will prescribe the necessary pain management medication, as needed. However, many patients only require over the counter pain medications such as Tylenol. Our Troy, Mi area liposuction patients universally agree that the amazing fat loss results outweigh the temporary pain and discomfort.

Recovery Time after Liposuction

Liposuction performed with a local anesthetic will allow a patient to go home almost immediately. For patients who receive liposuction under general anesthesia, longer observation times are required. But patients still typically go home the same day. Patients will need a family member or friend to take them home following the procedure.

Total recovery time depends on the extent of the procedure, quantity of fat removed, age, and overall health of the patient. Patients can typically return to light activity in 2 – 3 days.

Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area gives patients specific instructions for returning to normal activity based on their specific case.
