Why More Women are Getting Labiaplasty Surgery
Why More Women are Getting Labiaplasty Surgery –
Labiaplasty is performed to shorten the length of the inner folds of skin on either side of the vagina. At AMAE Plastic Surgery in Macomb County, labiaplasty is one of the most common procedures we perform. This is no surprise, considering that a clinical study recently reported that labiaplasty is the fourth most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States. Beat out in popularity only by liposuction, breast augmentation, and rhinoplasty, labiaplasty continues to help countless women throughout the country feel comfortable in their own bodies.
And that’s not all: in a different study, labiaplasty was named the fastest-growing type of plastic surgery in the world. Data collected by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) determined that in 2016, there had been a 45% increase in labiaplasty procedures performed since the previous year.
In this article, Macomb County board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali discusses everything there is to know about labiaplasty.
Why More Women Are Getting Labiaplasty Surgery
The root cause of this recent surge of interest in labiaplasty has been the subject of some debate among researches. It is the opinion of Macomb County board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali (along with many others in his field), that the modern labiaplasty craze does not have one single culprit. Rather, he opines that the current cultural interest in labiaplasty boils down to numerous factors:
1) Changed grooming practices contribute to Labiaplasty Surgery
Among women whose grooming habits emphasize everything being neat and clean and streamlined, labiaplasty is particularly popular. Labiaplasty is also popular among women who lead especially active lifestyles.
According to a study on university students published by the Journal of Sexual Medicine, 95% of those surveyed reported deliberately removing their pubic hair at least once in the last four weeks. With pubic shaving and waxing increasing in popularity, it makes sense that instances of labiaplasty have also skyrocketed. When the hair of the pubic region is removed, the labia is, consequently, more prominently displayed. For this reason, many women have turned to labiaplasty as a part of perfecting the appearance of their entire pubic area.
2) Images on social media contribute to Labiaplasty Surgery
Thanks to the impossible standards put in place both by the mainstream media and (perhaps even more so) social media, many women are left feeling discouraged about their physical appearance. For this reason, many of our Macomb County patients have turned to labiaplasty in the hopes of making their genitalia “ideal” in appearance.
At AMAE Plastic Surgery in Macomb County, it is our first and foremost priority that all of our patients understand there is nothing inherently “wrong” with anything about their body. But if we can help make a person have an easier time loving their own body (and, by extension, themselves as a whole), we are happy to do so.
3) Growing athleticism contributes to Labiaplasty Surgery
Board certified Macomb County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali also attributes the popularity of labiaplasty -at least in part- to recent increases in the number of women who participate in sports. Many of our labiaplasty patients lead highly active lives, and wish to alleviate the discomfort and pain their large or distended labia can cause when participating in athletics.
Labiaplasty is also a great way for Macomb County women to feel more comfortable wearing yoga pants, as well as while seated on a bicycle while take spin classes. And while there is absolutely nothing abnormal about having a labia minora with long or multiple folds, many such women feel self-conscious about their appearance in underwear or bathing suits. Labiaplasty can change that.
4) Decreased Plastic Surgery Stigma contributes to Labiaplasty
Now more than ever, women are encouraged to embrace their own inner confidence and independence. Women today are empowered to take control of any physical issues that bother them, and in many cases, such issues can be resolved through labiaplasty.
Much like breast implants, labiaplasty can help a woman feel good about her body and love the skin she’s in.
Many of our Macomb County labiaplasty patients seek us out due to a distorted image of their own body. With it impossible to define precisely what constitutes as “normal” genitalia, many women erroneously believe that it is abnormal for their labia to protrude or extend past the labia majora. But whatever has motivated the patient to get the procedure, at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Macomb County, we offer labiaplasty as a solution.
