Update: FDA Approves CoolSculpting for Lax, Loose Skin
FDA Approves CoolSculpting for Double Chin Lax Skin –
Skin laxity refers to “loose” skin that has lost its firmness, tightness or elasticity. Think of sagging skin under the chin, or the so-called “bat wings” that hang down from arms. These are types of lax skin.
There are two primary causes of skin laxity: chronological aging (getting older) and photo ageing (exposure to sun or other environmental toxins, such as smoking or pollution). Poor diet can also accelerate skin laxity, due to a lack of circulating antioxidants that regenerate the skin.
In chronological ageing, the skin produces less collagen and elastin and the fibril layers loosen and become less organized, as we get older. As a result the skin becomes thinner and sags. However, photo aging accelerates this process by exposure to sun, cigarette smoke, pollution or poor diet that makes the skin older “before its time”.
Additionally, large or sudden weight loss can result in loose or sagging skin. And, some loose or sagging skin – for example a double chin – may be hereditary.
Treating Lax Skin with CoolSculpting
Anyone with skin laxity will tell you that creams only go so far – and that there are no miracle ointments that cure lax skin. Up until recently, surgical “tightening” was the only 100% successful way to remove lax skin. And for some people – such as those who have experienced significant weight loss – surgical skin tightening is still the best (and possible only) remedy for loose skin.
Nonetheless, the search for a non-surgical treatment for lax skin has been ongoing. One area that is particularly troublesome to treat has always been the “double chin” or so-called “turkey neck”.
However, this month the FDA announced that the CoolSculpting® treatment is the first and only non-surgical fat reduction technology to be FDA-cleared for improved appearance of lax tissue in double chins, (also called submental fat).
How CoolSculpting Treats Double Chin Lax Skin
A 2017 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) revealed that 73 percent of adults are bothered by excess fat under the chin to some extent!
CoolSculpting for the double chin had already been clinically proven to reduce fat under the chin of up to 20 percent after just one treatment. And in most patients, two CoolSculpting CoolMini treatments are sufficient to restore a defined appearance to the jaw line.
An 18-week clinical study of CoolSculpting used on double chin areas found that 77 percent of patients showed an improvement in their lax tissue. And 75 percent of patients reported that their chin looked more toned following just a single treatment.
Based on these stunning results, the CoolMini® applicator for the CoolSculpting® system treatment of the submental (chin) area was approved by the FDA this month.

Of course, other double chin treatment options also exist – including Kybella, liposuction and neck lift surgery. The best way to determine which double chin treatment is best for you is to discuss your goals with a board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali who offers Kybella, CoolSculpting, Liposuction and more – in addition to other double chin remedies such as surgical neck lifts. Dr. Ali will assess your double chin and help you choose the best treatment for your individual needs.
It is wise to be very wary of doctors or clinic that only offer one type of double chin procedure. They may try to steer or pressure you into the one procedure they offer – even if another procedure would be better for you. Only a surgeon like Dr. Ali who offers multiple treatment options can give you the choices you need, so you can chose the double chin treatment that is best for you.
Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women and men across the Detroit & Ann Arbor area get the jawline they have always wanted with FDA approved CoolSculpting, Kybella, Liposuction and Neck Lifts.
