Get Shapely Calves & Ankles with Liposuction

Oakland County Surgeon Explains
Liposuction for Calves & Ankles

If you have stubborn pockets of fat on your calves and/or ankles, you know that there is perhaps no tougher area to try and reduce. This is because when fat accumulates on the calves and ankles it is almost entirely due to genetics – and no amount of dieting or exercise will help.

The good news is that thick calves, ankles and so-called “cankles” can now permanently be a thing of the past with calf and ankle liposuction.

Early liposuction procedures on the lower legs used to be fraught with complications and often produced unsatisfactory results. However, improvements in “Tumescent” (minimally invasive) liposuction of the lower legs extremely effective and very popular in the last two decades.

How Calf & Ankle Liposuction are Performed

Neither calf nor ankle liposuction is typically performed on its own. Rather an experienced plastic surgeon will shape the entire lower leg for the most aesthetic results. Liposuctioning the calf and ankle as a single procedure ensures that the best proportions of the lower leg are achieved.

In some cases, Dr. Ali may also perform liposuction of the knees and thighs at the same time as the calves and ankles – to contour the entire leg into a smooth, natural, attractive shape.

In performing calf and ankle liposuction a thin tube called a cannula is gently inserted into the fat layer of the calves or ankles. Moving the cannula slowly back and forth through the fat, the surgeon breaks up the fat cells, which are then sucked out through the cannula.

Dr. Ali performs calf and ankle liposuction with minimally invasive tumescent liposuction, which requires only local anesthetic. Typically, a tiny incision is placed directly below the knee, towards the top of the calf. Using two separate incisions on either side of the calf a smooth and shapely leg is literally “sculpted” into a slimmer, more beautiful shape.

Finally, get the legs, calves and ankles you’ve always wanted with safe, effective affordable liposuction.

Men’s Chest & Male Breast Liposuction

Oakland County Surgeon Explains
Liposuction for Men’s Chest & Male Breasts–

Male breast enlargement, also called gynecomastia, is a condition that can cause embarrassment and insecurity about one’s appearance. Fortunately there are a number of effective treatments to reduce male breasts – including fast, safe & affordable liposuction.

Excess fat in a man’s chest area is often genetic – and frequently no amount of diet or exercise helps. Other causes of male breast enlargement include:

  • Medications
  • Alcohol
  • Certain cancers
  • Tuberculosis
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Malnutrition
  • Hormone imbalance

Male Breast Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is performed by inserting a thin tube, called a cannula, into the treatment area. The surgeon moves the cannula back and forth to break up the fat cells, which are then sucked out through the tube.

As a board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ali has helped men get the masculine chest they desire with this technique. He has a deep understanding of how fat is stored in different areas of the body, and actually sculpts the chest, producing a proportionate, attractive appearance.

Because the male chest is an area that should only have muscle, all excess fat can typically be completely removed with liposuction. This includes removal of the fat pockets from both sides and from on the area under each nipple. In some cases an experienced surgeon will also remove glandular tissue in addition to fat to ensure a muscular appearance.

The approach and treatment for male breast liposuction differs for men, as opposed to removing fatty areas from women. Dr. Ali has decades of experience giving men the masculine, muscular chest they desire.

Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Liposuction?

Because male breasts are an area that is so easily improved by liposuction, most men who are suffering from gynecomastia are good candidates for chest liposuction.

Keep in mind that male breast liposuction is not a weight loss technique and is not recommended for individuals who are obese. Liposuction is not a substitute for maintaining a healthy weight – however it is ideal for men who have stubborn fat in the breast area that does not respond to diet and exercise.

If a man has fullness in the breast area, the best results are achieved if it is caught early on before the breasts drop and get too droopy. This ensures that the chest will not only look better in the short term, but will also look better later on as the man gets older.

Oakland County’s Best Male Breast Liposuction

Dr. Ali uses a unique, multifaceted approach to men’s breast reduction through liposuction. He doesn’t just suck out a single area of fatty tissue – but rather uses his skill and experience to bring proportion and balance to your entire body.

Chest liposuction must be tailored to the specific needs of each patient. Dr. Ali will offer you a consultation to examine your chest, listen thoroughly to your cosmetic goals, and offer his professional viewpoint to create a personalized treatment program that is specific to you.

Does Liposuction Work on the Face, Neck, Jowls & Double Chin?

Liposuction for Face, Neck, Jowls & Double Chin

Our parents give us many things – including the “DNA” that controls how much excess fat we have in our cheeks, chin, and neck. And while diet and exercise can help many areas of the body, it typically does nothing to reduce fatty deposits on the face, jaw line & “double chin”.

Nothing else contributes to our sense of “who we are” like our face does. Our face is how others remember us, it is what we see in the mirror every day. Unfortunately it is also the basis of how we are judged, and as well as how we judge ourselves. Everybody wants to feel attractive – but many people do not realize that facial liposuction can give them the appearance they want without surgery.

Dr. Ali is an Oakland County board certified plastic surgeon who has helped hundreds of women and men in Birmingham, West Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills and the surrounding area get the appearance they want with non-invasive tumescent liposuction of the cheeks, neck, jawline or double-chin.

.

What is facial liposuction?

Liposuction was originally designed for body contouring, but modern liposuction technology now makes it an ideal tool for sculpting the face and neck as well. In facial liposuction, a surgeon uses a special tiny tube (called a “micro-cannula”) attached to a gentle suction-syringe or pump to extract fat cells from the face.

A skilled, experienced, board-certified surgeon like Dr. Ali can sculpt areas of fat into more attractive and more youthful facial contours with liposuction. Among the most common facial liposuction procedures we perform at our Birmingham, Michigan office is “double-chin” removal that sculpts a more defined chin and jawline.

.

Advantages of Liposuction for Cheeks, Neck, Jowls & Double Chin

Many men and women prefer facial liposuction over a face-lift because it is non-invasive. Only a mild, local anesthetic is required and there is very minimal “downtime” or “recovery time”.  Additionally, there are no scars with facial liposuction. And because there is very, very minimal bruising or swelling most people will never even know you had the procedure done. In some cases, facial liposuction can provide more natural or “subtle” results than a facelift, as well.

Unlike CoolSculpting or “double-chin injections”, liposuction requires only one treatment and the results are visible as soon as swelling subsides. Both CoolSculpting and double-chin injections (Kybella) require multiple treatments and take much longer for results to be seen – as the body must gradually eliminate the “frozen” fat. Additionally, Kybella only targets the area immediately below the chin and not other problem areas, such as the jowls.

.

Facial Liposuction Procedure

The procedure of facial liposuction typically only takes 30 minutes to an hour – depending upon how much fat is to be removed, and from how many areas of the face. Only one treatment is required – and while some results may be immediately visible, the full results won’t be seen until all of the swelling subsides.

You will be given a compression garment with specific instructions on when to wear it. Typically it is around 5 days and then while sleeping for a couple more weeks.

The pain or discomfort is usually minimal, and can typically be managed with over the counter painkillers. However, many people do not need to take anything for pain at all. Dr. Ali will give you specific instructions regarding what you can safely take for any discomfort.

In younger patients and those with elastic skin, facial liposuction is very often effective on its own, and all that is needed. In some older patients, or those wishing more dramatic changes, facial liposuction may be combined with a laser resurfacing, a facelift, brow lift, eyelid surgery, nose surgery, or even chin or cheek implants.

Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting

Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting

Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women and men in Oakland County get the body they want with liposuction and CoolSculpting. But how do you know which procedure is right for you? In this article we discuss the general differences between liposuction and CoolSculpting.

Remember every patient is unique, and what is the best procedure for one person may not be right for someone else. Dr. Ali will provide you with a evaluation and detailed answers to your questions, so that you can chose the best procedure for your goals and your individual situation.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is a surgical technique that removes excess fat deposits located between the skin and muscle. It improves the body’s shape by surgically getting rid of stubborn “bulges” of fat that are resistant to exercise and dieting.

Liposuction is an excellent procedure for people who are at or near a healthy weight, who want to permanently “sculpt” away specific stubborn pockets of fat. It generally works best for people who have good skin elasticity and muscle tone – and who do not have excess skin or loose abdominal muscles.

In most cases liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, and the patient can go home within a half hour after the procedure. The incision in liposuction is very small (less than 3mm) so there are no stiches and no scars.

The recovery time is from 2 to 7 days before normal activity can be resumed – and the pain or discomfort gradually subsides over a period of 2 to 8 weeks.

Once the swelling goes down (4 to 6 weeks), the liposuction results are visible “immediately” – because the fat has been surgically “sucked out”.

In addition to be performed on the “tummy” (abdomen, waist) liposuction can also  be used on many other parts of the body including the sides (love handles), arms, chin, thighs and buttocks (butt).

CoolSculpting Procedure

Like liposuction, CoolSculpting is primarily used to remove stubborn areas of fat that resist diet and exercise.  Like liposuction, CoolSculpting is not a weight loss tool for obesity and it does not remedy flabby or loose abdominal skin or muscles.

CoolSculpting is non-surgical and non-invasive – meaning there is no incision and no local anesthetic. This also means that there is virtually no “downtime” and no period of recovery.

While lipo is generally done in one treatment, CoolSculpting, involves multiple treatments. You will begin to see results within 4-5 weeks, but it may take 3 to 5 months to deliver final results. Full results will eventually reduce the area treated by 20 to 25%.

In sum, CoolSculpting is less invasive, and less uncomfortable, with less downtime. But the results take more treatments and the results take much longer to be visible.

Beware of Liposuction Clinics With Only One Choice

The best way to determine which treatment is best for you is to discuss your goals with a board certified plastic surgeon who offers many different procedures. Dr. Ali will look at your skin, muscles, body, lifestyle and goals to help you chose the best procedure for your unique needs.

Always be very wary of doctors, clinic that only offer one type of procedure. They will likely steer or pressure you into the procedure they offer – even if another procedure would be better for your body, your goals or your lifestyle. Only a surgeon who offers multiple procedures can give you the choices you need that are best for you.

Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

Should I Get Liposuction?

Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women and men in Oakland County get the body they want with liposuction and tummy tucks. But how do you know which procedure is right for you? In this article we discuss the general differences between lipo and a tummy tuck.

It improves the body’s contour or shape by surgically getting rid of stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to exercise and dieting. Liposuction is not a good treatment for obesity or large weight loss.

Liposuction is an excellent procedure for people who are at or near a healthy weight, who simply want to “sculpt” away specific stubborn areas of fat. It generally works best for people who have good skin elasticity and muscle tone – and who do not have excess skin in the midsection or loose abdominal muscles.

In most cases liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, and the patient can go home within a half hour after the procedure. The incision in liposuction is very small – typically less than 3mm – so there are no stiches and no scars.

In addition to be performed on the “tummy” (abdomen, waist) liposuction can also  be used on many other parts of the body including the sides (love handles), arms, chin, thighs and buttocks (butt).

Tummy Tuck Procedure

A tummy tuck is a more invasive procedure. A tummy tuck is primarily aimed at addressing excess or “flabby” skin and loose muscle, and to a lesser extent excess fat.

A tummy tuck is also often a good procedure for abdominal “flabbiness” due to pregnancy or a large weight loss.

A tummy tuck (also called abdominoplasty) typically requires general anesthesia. An incision across the lower abdomen is performed during a tummy tuck in order to remove excess abdominal skin and tighten the abdominal muscles. This does result in some scaring, as well as a longer recovery time and more intense discomfort.

Do I Need Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck?

A patient with elastic skin and good abdominal muscle tone will generally only require liposuction to remove the fat “bulges” from the abdomen area, and get the results they desire. However, a tummy tuck is usually the best solution if the main issue experienced by the patient is loose skin or stretched muscle tissue.

In some cases, the less invasive liposuction procedure can be done first to remove fat, since it has fewer risks and a shorter recovery time. Then later – if truly necessary to achieve more dramatic results – a tummy tuck can subsequently be performed.

Both liposuction and tummy tuck are excellent body contouring procedures. Dr. Ali will evaluate your skin, muscles and body to assess your individual situation. He will provide detailed answers to your questions, so that you can chose the best procedure for your goals and unique needs.

What to Expect After Liposuction

What to Expect After Liposuction

Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women and men in Oakland County get the body they want with liposuction. In this article we discuss what to expect after your lipo surgery and during your recovery.

Remember every patient is unique, and your experience may differ from this general information. Always follow the instructions and advice provided by your plastic surgeon. Dr. Ali will provide detailed answers to your questions before and after your liposuction, so that you know what to expect in your individual situation.

How Long is the Recovery Time after Liposuction?

When liposuction is done using local anesthetic, patients can often go home as soon as 30 minutes after surgery. When general anesthetic is used, patients typically require two to three hours of observation before being discharged.

You need to have a friend or family member drive you home. It is recommended that you do not drive for the first 24 to 48 hours after lipo surgery.

Tumescent liposuction involves significantly less swelling, inflammation and pain. “Downtime” varies and can be from 2 to 7 days. Some patients can return to light activity – such as a desk-type job – within two or three days after tumescent liposuction. Normal physical activities can generally be resumed very soon after that.

Your recovery period will depends on how extensive the procedure was, how much fat was removed, your age, your general health, etc. Dr. Ali will give you specific instructions about returning to work and regular activities suited to your individual situation.

Is there Pain after Liposuction Surgery?

As with any surgery, there will be some degree of discomfort after your liposuction. The amount of pain experienced depends upon individual factors including the part of the body, the type of anesthesia used, and the patient’s pain tolerance.

Soreness is usually the most intense for 2 to 4 days after liposuction – and then discomfort decreases steadily. Typically you will experience tenderness and soreness for up to 4 weeks, but it should generally subsides over the following next 4 to 8 weeks.

Der. Ali’s patients agree that the short term pain is more than worth the long term gain in appearance they experience.

Will I Have Scars, Lumps or Dimples from Liposuction?

Scars are not common with modern liposuction techniques.  Dr. Ali uses very small cannulas (“micro-cannulas”) to remove the fat – so only very small incisions are required. Each incision is no more than 3mm in length, so there is no need for stitches.

The appearance of your skin after liposuction will depend upon your skin’s elasticity. Skin with good elasticity will look smooth, firm and natural after liposuction.

The chances of irregularities, dimples, or flaws after liposuction are extremely low when performed by a skilled, board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali.

He will carefully evaluate your body fat, skin elasticity, etc. before proceeding with liposuction. If he believes that poor skin elasticity or skin tone may not make you a good lipo candidate, he will discuss other treatment options with you.

Do I Need to Wear a Compression Garment after Lipo?

Generally, DR. Ali has patients wear a compression garment full-time for 10 days after surgery, and then part-time for 10 additional days. It is not uncomfortable, and in fact helps keep both pain and swelling down.

Should I Get Liposuction?

Should I Get Liposuction?

If you are tired of stubborn pockets of fat on your waist, hips, thighs, love handles, or elsewhere on your body you may be considering liposuction. But how do you know if liposuction is right for you? Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of men and women in Oakland County get the body they want with liposuction. In this article we present some facts to help you decide if liposuction is right for you.

Of course, a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon who performs liposuction is always best. Dr. Ali will also offer you a consultation so that you can decide if lipo is the right procedure for you.

How Liposuction Works

Liposuction is a surgical technique that removes excess fat deposits located between the skin and muscle. It improves the body’s contour or shape by surgically getting rid of stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to exercise and dieting.

Which Body Areas can be Treated by Liposuction?

The areas most frequently treated with lipo in women are:

  • waist (abdomen, tummy)
  • flanks/“love handles”
  • hips
  • outer, inner & anterior thighs
  • butt / buttocks
  • knees
  • arms
  • chin and neck.

Man can also get liposuction and are about 15% to 25% of our lipo patients. The areas most frequently treated with lipo in men are:

  • chin and neck area,
  • abdomen / waist
  • flanks (“love-handles”),

Who Can Get Liposuction Surgery?

Liposuction is not a good treatment for obesity or large weight loss. Even as a last resort, liposuction is simply not effective for people who are unable to lose large amounts of weight through dieting and exercise.

Liposuction is ideal for people who are at or near a healthy weight, who want to “sculpt” away specific stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to dieting or exercise.

A good candidate for liposuction will have realistic expectations. Liposuction can provide very substantial improvements in the “shape” or “contour” of “fatty” body parts. But the amount of fat and the elasticity of the skin will affect the final results.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The fee for liposuction will depend upon how many areas of your body will be treated, as well as the experience and reputation of your surgeon.

Dr. Ali is a board certified plastic surgeon with an excellent reputation for amazing results. We offer competitive rates, as well as financing options to help you get the lipo you want.

But your decisions about liposuction should not be based solely on finding the “cheapest” procedure. Very cheap lipo usually means that the doctor is not board certified, is less experienced, or does the procedure quickly and incompletely. Surgery that will affect your appearance for years to come is not something you should consider from a “cut rate” doctor.

What Are the Risks of Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgery that does involve anesthesia – so to minimize the risk of complications you should always chose a board certified plastic surgeon who is very experienced with an excellent reputation.

Compared to most surgeries, liposuction is amazingly safe. Very rare problems that can potentially occur are the same as any surgical procedure: infections, bruising, bleeding, and (very infrequently) nerve injury.

Because any anesthesia has certain risks, liposuction using local anesthesia has somewhat fewer risks than lipo using general anesthesia or heavy IV sedation.  Doing too much liposuction at one time can also increase risks. The best way to minimize the risk of complications is to have your lipo performed by a highly experienced, board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali.

male liposuction

Men, Get Ready for the Beach with Liposuction

Bloomfield Hills, MI – With summer in full swing, you’ve likely been inundated with images of scantily-clad models smiling amidst tropical backgrounds. You may think to yourself, I’d gladly pose in my bathing suit if only I could lose those pesky extra pounds.

If, despite trying to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, you find you still have the problem of accumulating fat, liposuction may be an option for you!

While it’s clear that females get lots of cosmetic procedures done, men aren’t always so keen to try it. After all, any Google image search for “plastic surgery” will likely be catered to women. However, men are getting cosmetic surgery at a growing rate, and that trend is only predicted to continue.

“Every year, we’re seeing more and more men opt for procedures like liposuction,” says Detroit-area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali. “Many men find they can achieve the more sculpted, athletic physique they’ve always wanted. It’s great that liposuction gives us that possibility.”

Even though females get the procedure at nearly seven times the rate of men, liposuction remains the number one plastic surgery for both genders. Men tend to accumulate fat around their abdominal area, chest, hips, neck, and chin. Liposuction offers a great option if you’re looking to rid yourself of those few stubborn pounds that just won’t leave.

What Does Liposuction Entail?

Dr. Ali explains, “The beauty of liposuction is that you can directly target the areas of your body where you’d like to lose fat tissue. With this method, we can make sure your problematic areas are rid of this nuisance once and for all.”

The procedure itself is usually done under general anesthesia, though smaller areas might only require intravenous (IV) sedation. Local anesthetic is usually applied to the targeted spots as well, to prevent blood loss during liposuction. A suctioning machine then uses small tubes called cannulas to literally suck the fat from your body.

Variations on this theme include power-assisted liposuction (PAL) and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). PAL utilizes an electric motor that physically breaks up fat, and UAL uses ultrasound energy to melt the fat. Thus, both of these techniques make the fat removal process easier on patient and surgeon alike.

Are There Other Options?

If you find that diet and exercise alone aren’t enough, liposuction (as described above) may be a good choice for you. However, if you don’t want to commit to such a dramatic procedure, there is a newer alternative available.

“Another wonderful technology available today is called CoolSculpting,” says Dr. Ali. “Unlike other options, CoolSculpting freezes fat cells and lets the body eliminate them naturally.”

CoolSculpting is a minimally invasive procedure and doesn’t require any surgery. The downtime may be less than liposuction, yet the results will be similar: a dramatic reduction of fat that will be noticeable and permanent.

Who Should Get These Procedures?

Liposuction and CoolSculpting aren’t for everyone. If you’re already near your ideal weight, but just can’t lose those last few pounds, these procedures are ideal for you. However, they’re not meant to treat obesity, nor should they be seen as a drastic weight loss option.

As with any other procedure, it’s essential that you contact a professional and find out what your choices are.

“With technology improving all the time,” says Dr. Ali, “you might be surprised at all the options available to you!” Time has allowed cosmetic procedures to become remarkably refined, giving you the best chance ever to have your ideal figure.

If you’re interested in learning more about ways to achieve the body you’ve always dreamed of, schedule a consultation with award-winning, board certified Detroit area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali.

coolsculping and Lipo

Be Swimsuit Season Ready This Year with CoolSculpting or Lipo!

Bloomfield Hills, MI– With warmer weather comes more outdoor activity, including trips to the beach or pool. While the word swimsuit may strike fear in the hearts of some, Detroit-area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali is prepared.

“We are lucky to live in a time where many people can attain their ideal body results relatively quickly. With procedures like CoolSculpting and liposuction, virtually anyone can be ready for swimsuit season in very little time,” notes the surgeon.

CoolSculpting

Developed by Harvard University Scientists, CoolSculpting is the only non-surgical fat treatment option approved by the FDA.

“I love offering this treatment to patients, as there is little to no downtime and no surgical procedure is required,” says Dr. Ali. “The best part is, patients experience amazing results that they could not otherwise achieve.”

Candidates for CoolSculpting are those who would like to lose fat in the following areas: flanks, thighs, abdomen, back, and/or under the chin. Those interested in the procedure should be at or near their ideal body weight and have a body mass index (BMI) under 30.

This procedure can be done quickly in a doctor’s office and patients can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. During the procedure, patients are conscious and can read, use electronic devices, or rest.

Since CoolSculpting freezes fat cells, the body will take a few weeks to break down and expel the dead tissue. This means that though patients may not see results in the minutes and hours after their procedure, a dramatic difference will likely be noticed in the upcoming weeks. Fat cells will continue to leave the body for up to six months after the initial treatment.

Liposuction

For those seeking to get rid of stubborn fat that is too difficult to get rid of by diet or exercise, liposuction is another option.

A much more dramatic and invasive procedure than CoolSculpting, liposuction is a surgery that removes deep fat tissue using a device to literally suck the fat out of the body. Any area with fat cells may be targeted, though areas commonly treated are: the abdomen, thighs, back, and upper arms. Performed under general or intravenous sedation, liposuction must be done by an experienced professional for safe and lasting results.

“Liposuction is the most commonly utilized plastic surgery today,” Dr. Ali explains. “Patients generally love the long-lasting results achieved by this technique, and most are able to return to work within a day or two.”

Liposuction results can take up to nine months to fully show, but patients note dramatic changes within a few weeks to months after surgery.

Seeking Professional Care

With summer drawing ever nearer, Dr. Ali reminds patients, “The earlier you consult with a plastic surgeon, the sooner you will achieve your desired results. Remember, some of these procedures can take a few months to give you the body you want.”

What to Expect While You’re Recovering from Liposuction

Bloomfield Hills, MI – A fast and dramatic procedure, liposuction is gaining popularity worldwide. And it’s no wonder: you can lose the fat that diet and exercise alone weren’t able to eliminate. But what happens when you get home? How do you achieve the best possible outcome from your procedure? Award-winning plastic surgeon, Dr. Ali, of Amae Plastic Surgery Center, sheds some light on the matter.

“First and foremost, before you have liposuction, be sure to consult with your doctor about the post-operative care you’ll need,” advises the Detroit-based surgeon. “Be sure to ask any and all questions you have, including whether or not you’ll have stitches, where to get the appropriate compression garments, and how long your recovery is expected to take. As always, communication is key.”

What are the first steps after my liposuction?

Depending on whether you’ve had general or local anesthesia, you’ll likely be out of the medical center 30 minutes to a few hours after your procedure. You’ll want someone who can drive you home, and then you’ll need time to rest in a comfortable environment. Expect to be sore and swollen after the anesthesia wears off.

Sometimes, you will be given pain medication for comfort and possibly antibiotics to prevent infection. It’s also important to walk as soon as you can after the surgery, as this will help prevent blood clots in your legs and lungs. While you should avoid vigorous exercise for a few weeks still, it’s important to keep your circulation going strong.

How long does it take to heal?

“If you’ve had just a small area treated, you should be feeling all right in a day or two. The bruising can last for a little while, usually a few days, and swelling sometimes lasts several weeks or months,” says Dr. Ali. “Luckily, most people can go back to work or school very soon after surgery.”

Of course, recovery times vary significantly from patient to patient. Although bruising and swelling are common at first, you will likely be back to your routine activities within a week or two. You may be surprised that you can jog, golf, and do light exercise fairly shortly after liposuction. After a month or so, you should be feeling back to normal. You can expect to see your final results in one to six months after liposuction after your body has adapted to your slimmer shape.

If at any time in your recovery you feel extreme pain or discomfort, have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or notice any signs of infection like fever or excessive swelling, it’s important to contact your doctor right away. “Though liposuction is now a common procedure, it is still a surgery, and all surgeries have risks,” says Dr. Ali. “It’s important that you communicate any problems to your surgeon immediately so that you receive the best care possible.”

Compression Garments

For the short-term, you’ll need to wear a compression garment to maintain the new contour created by your doctor. This clothing helps your body adapt to its new tissue and reduces looseness in your skin. Such compression also helps reduce swelling, which will speed up your healing process. Expect to wear your garment at least a month after surgery.

Long-Term Care

In the months and years to come, you’ll want to maintain your new body weight as best as you can. While liposuction removes existing fat, it cannot prevent you from gaining new fat cells. Thus, it’s crucial to keep a healthy lifestyle with consistent exercise and a good diet.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has an entire area of their website devoted to liposuction. You can also consult the Food and Drug Administration for more information.

The Final Word on Healing Properly from Liposuction

With liposuction, you can have great control over how your body looks and feels. Since this procedure is very commonly done, you can have a good idea of what to expect after talking with your doctor.
