The Benefits of Liposuction Beyond Fat Removal

How Liposuction Can Improve Your Life

Liposuction’s primary objective is fat removal – with its ability to permanently remove up to 11 pounds of fat in treated areas in a single procedure – without diet or exercise. But lipo’s benefits extend far beyond just eliminating excess adipose tissue.

Dr. Ali, an esteemed plastic surgeon certified by the board in Birmingham, MI, has transformed the lives of many patients by assisting them in eliminating stubborn fat and achieving their desired body contours via liposuction.

In this article, board certified Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explores the various ways in which liposuction can enhance your body, mind and lifestyle with lipo body contouring and sculpting.

Targeted Fat Loss (“Spot Reducing”) with Liposuction

One of the primary benefits of liposuction is its ability to target specific areas of the body where stubborn fat deposits accumulate – in effect “spot reducing” trouble spots without removing curves and contours where they are desired.

Liposuction offers a unique solution for spot reducing stubborn fat deposits in areas that are resistant to exercise and dieting efforts. And, unlike traditional weight loss methods like calorie restriction, Keto, or working out which result in overall fat reduction throughout the body, liposuction allows for targeted fat removal from specific trouble spots.

Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI, utilizes advanced liposuction techniques to precisely sculpt and contour areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, and arms, addressing localized pockets of fat that may persist despite healthy lifestyle habits.  Whether it’s the belly, love handles, thighs, hips, or arms, liposuction allows for precise contouring and sculpting to create a more balanced and proportionate physique.

By selectively removing fat cells from problem areas, liposuction removes fat where you don’t want it while leaving adipose tissue where you desire it.

Improved Body Proportions with Liposuction

Liposuction can also improve body proportions by removing excess fat from areas that may be disproportionately larger or smaller than others. For example, individuals with a pear-shaped body may have more prominent hips and thighs compared to their upper body. Or men and women with an apple shaped body may be carrying around a big belly that is out of proportion to their breast, butt, arms, and legs.

Liposuction can selectively reduce fat in these areas to create a more harmonious balance between different body regions, enhancing overall proportions and symmetry.

Enhanced Muscle Definition with Liposuction

In addition to reducing fat volume, liposuction can also enhance muscle definition by revealing underlying muscle contours. By removing superficial fat layers, liposuction can uncover the natural contours of muscles such as the abdomen, chest, and arms, creating a more sculpted and toned appearance. T

his is particularly beneficial for individuals who engage in regular exercise and strength training but struggle to achieve the desired muscle definition due to stubborn fat deposits.

Better Fitting Clothes with Liposuction:

Liposuction not only reshapes the body but also enhances the way clothing fits, allowing patients to enjoy a more flattering and comfortable wardrobe. By eliminating excess fat from areas such as the abdomen, hips, and thighs, liposuction can improve the fit of clothing, leading to smoother lines and fewer bulges.

Patients often find that they can comfortably wear clothing styles that were previously unflattering or restrictive, leading to increased confidence and satisfaction with their appearance. Whether it’s slipping into a favorite pair of jeans with ease or confidently donning form-fitting attire, liposuction can transform the way patients feel about their wardrobe choices and overall sense of style.

Improved Self-Confidence with Liposuction

Numerous studies have highlighted the positive impact of liposuction on patients’ self-confidence and emotional well-being. According to a study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, patients undergoing liposuction reported significant improvements in body image, self-esteem, and overall quality of life following the procedure (Cash et al., 2006). Additionally, a systematic review published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that liposuction consistently resulted in high levels of patient satisfaction, with the majority of patients reporting improved body image and self-esteem post-operatively (Sarwer et al., 2004).

These findings underscore the transformative effects of liposuction beyond physical appearance, providing patients with a renewed sense of confidence and empowerment in their daily lives. With increased confidence in their body contours and appearance, patients can embrace new opportunities and enjoy a more fulfilling and active lifestyle following liposuction surgery.

Liposuction Myths vs. Facts

Separating Liposuction Truth from Fiction

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits and sculpt the body. However, there are many myths and misconceptions surrounding liposuction that can cloud individuals’ understanding of the procedure.

Dr. Ali, a renowned Troy, MI area board-certified plastic surgeon, has empowered numerous patients to eliminate stubborn fat and achieve their desired body shape through liposuction.

In this article, Troy, MI area board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali will debunk common liposuction myths and provide the facts to help you make informed decisions about your cosmetic goals.

Myth 1: You Can’t Spot Reduce

One common misconception surrounding fat loss is the belief that you cannot spot reduce specific trouble spots through diet and exercise alone. While it’s true that traditional weight loss methods can lead to overall fat reduction throughout the body, they may not effectively target localized areas of stubborn fat. However, liposuction offers a solution to this myth by allowing patients to precisely spot reduce trouble spots that may be resistant to diet and exercise efforts.

Unlike diet and exercise, which promote generalized fat loss, liposuction enables targeted fat removal from specific areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, and arms. By precisely sculpting and contouring these trouble spots, liposuction provides patients with a more effective solution for achieving their desired body shape and proportions. Whether it’s eliminating love handles, reducing belly fat, or slimming down thighs, liposuction offers a customizable approach to spot reduction that yields noticeable and long-lasting results.

With liposuction, patients can finally address stubborn fat deposits that may have been unresponsive to diet and exercise alone, achieving smoother, more sculpted body contours and renewed confidence in their appearance.

Myth 2: The Fat Comes Back After Liposuction

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the lipo treated area. And once fat cells are removed, the body cannot create new ones. By the time you are an adult you have all of the fat cells you will ever have, and the body does not make new ones to replace the fat cells that were sucked out with liposuction.

Remaining fat cells in other areas can shrink with weight loss and expand with weight gain. So, liposuction does not prevent future weight gain or fat accumulation in other untreated areas. If you gain weight after liposuction, fat cells in untreated areas of the body can expand, compromising the results achieved through liposuction. To maintain your liposuction results, it’s essential to maintain a stable weight through healthy lifestyle habits.

Myth 3: Liposuction is Only for Women

While liposuction is often associated with female patients, it is equally beneficial for men seeking to sculpt their bodies and eliminate stubborn fat deposits. Men commonly undergo liposuction to address areas such as the abdomen, flanks (love handles), and chest (to treat gynecomastia). Liposuction can enhance masculine contours and improve body confidence in male patients.

Myth 4: Liposuction Always Leaves You with Sagging Skin

There’s a common misconception that liposuction always leaves you with loose, sagging skin, particularly in areas where fat has been removed. While it’s true that removing fat from beneath the skin can sometimes result in mild skin laxity, especially in older patients or those with poor skin elasticity, it’s essential to recognize that younger patients often experience significant skin retraction over time. In many cases, the skin naturally tightens and conforms to the new contours of the body following liposuction, resulting in a smoother and more toned appearance.

However, for individuals who may experience some degree of skin laxity after liposuction, advanced skin tightening treatments are available at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area. Procedures such as Profound and Morpheus8 RF microneedling utilize cutting-edge technology to stimulate collagen and elastin production and improve skin elasticity, helping to tighten and firm the skin for a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

By combining liposuction with these highly effective skin tightening treatments, patients can achieve comprehensive body contouring results with minimal risk of loose, sagging skin.

Myth 5: Liposuction is Painful & Requires Lengthy Recovery

Advances in liposuction techniques, such as PAL (power assisted liposuction) at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area, have made the lipo procedure less invasive and more comfortable for patients.

While some discomfort and swelling are expected after liposuction, most patients can easily manage pain with prescription medication or just Tylenol – and resume normal activities within a few days.

Love Your Arms! 4 Treatments for Thinner Arms & Tighter Skin

Four Ways to Get Thinner Arms & Tighten Arm Skin

The holidays are almost here  – including Christmas celebrations and New Year’s Eve parties!  But many women dread getting dressed up for special occasions because they are embarrassed by loose, saggy, or ‘giggly’ skin on their arms. Instead of feeling fabulous in short sleeve, sleeveless, off the shoulder, or strapless dresses, women with drooping arm skin often bundle up in long sleeves and jackets to hide their arms.

Arm fat, as well as unsightly flabby skin that hangs down from the arms, can also make a man or woman self-conscious about baring their arms in tank tops, bathing suits or sleeveless summer clothing! Additionally,  arm fat can be especially frustrating for women preparing for a big event – such as a wedding or other formal occasion! Because the latest fashions in wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, and evening wear, are most often sleeveless, excess arm fat or skin can turn dress shopping from a joyous occasion into one of sadness and disappointment.

But that does NOT have to be the case! At AMAE in the Troy, MI area we offer several surgical – as well as non-surgical and non-invasive treatments – that can trim and tone arms. In this article Troy, MI board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali shares the details of four top arm tightening treatments available at AMAE.

Non-Surgical, Non-Invasive Arm Fat Treatment

At AMAE in the Troy, MI area we offer CoolSculpting to get rid of arm fat – the #1 non-invasive procedure in the world for permanently reducing arm fat!  CoolSculpting gets rid of arm fat painlessly and permanently – without surgery, diet or exercise.

A single CoolSculpting treatment will typically reduce the fat layer thickness in the arms by 20-25% in just a single treatment.  And, additional treatments will produce even more fat reduction in the upper arms. While CoolSculpting is loved by our Troy, MI area patients because there is no downtime, results are gradual and take a little time.

Full results develop over time, as the body naturally eliminates the frozen fat cells – so schedule CoolSculpting three months before the big event to see complete arm fat reduction results by the big day!

Non-Surgical, Non-Invasive Arm Skin Tightening

While CoolSculpting has some mild, but not dramatic skin, tightening effects, we also offer state-of-the-art new Profound skin tightening. Profound can be used on its own to tighten lax, flabby arm skin – or in conjunction with CoolSculpting to reduce fat and tone loose skin on the arms.

AMAE was one of the first providers in the Troy, MI area to offer revolutionary new Profound radiofrequency skin tightening. Profound stimulates renewed production of collagen and elastin – the building blocks of tight, toned, elastic skin. Profound also rejuvenates the production of hyaluronic acid, another substance produced by the body to yield smoother, tighter skin.

Surgical Arm Fat Removal

For larger amounts of arm fat removal liposuction can be highly effective. It is performed under anesthesia for a completely comfortable experience. Only tiny, well concealed scars will be left that fade over time.

Liposuction immediately removes fat from the arms by sucking it out through a small straw-like cannula. After about 3 weeks, most of the swelling will have gone down leaving visible results. These results will continue to improve over the next 6 months or so as the swelling completely subsides.

There is downtime of at least three days after liposuction – with a compression garment worn for several days. And there will be limits on physical activity for a few weeks. So make sure to schedule your liposuction well in advance of any big event.

Arm Lift Surgical Skin Tightening

People with decent skin elasticity may see their arms naturally “bounce back” and tighten after liposuction. Others with more skin laxity may need to tighten the remaining skin with Profound radiofrequency, discussed above. But patients with excessive amounts of loose, hanging or flabby skin may want to consider a surgical arm lift for optimal arm skin tightening and toning.

With new surgical techniques and technologies, arm lift surgery is now safer, easier, less invasive and more comfortable than ever. As a result, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that, over the last 10 years, the number of arm lift surgeries performed in the U.S. has increased by a whopping 4,378%!

Thanks to these advancements, arm lift surgery patients are able to enjoy better results than ever, with smaller less conspicuous scars, and significantly less downtime.

During arm lift surgery, excess skin from the upper arm (sometimes known as a “bat wing”) is surgically removed, using incisions that are strategically placed to be less visible.  The remaining skin is then tightly pulled together and sutured – leaving trim, toned arms.

Downtime can range from 1 to 2 weeks, and strenuous activities must also be avoided for about 6 weeks after arm lift surgery. But patients universally agree that the longer recovery period is well worth it to achieve the most dramatically trimmed and tightened arms possible.

Love Your Legs with Thigh Liposuction!

Liposuction for Thinner Thighs

Any woman who is unhappy with the size or shape of her thighs will tell you that losing fat from the legs is almost impossible with diet and exercise. This is because, unfortunately, a person’s thigh shape and size is primarily the result of heredity. Our DNA tells our body where to store fat – and fat deposited on the thighs can be extremely stubborn. In other words, if you are woman with heavy thighs, it’s very likely that your mother and sisters have bigger thighs, too.

The good news is that liposuction can dramatically remove inches from the thighs, as well as contour them into a more sleek and attractive shape. In fact, thighs are among our office’s most commonly improved areas of the body with tumescent liposuction!

Dr. Ali is an Oakland County board certified plastic surgeon who has helped hundreds of women in Oakland County get the appearance they want with tumescent liposuction of the inner, outer and anterior thighs. Not only can thigh liposuction make your thighs smaller, it can give them slimmer, smoother, sexier shape and contours.

How Thigh Liposuction is Performed

During thigh liposuction, a tube-like device called a cannula is gently inserted through a tiny incision into the fat layer of the thighs. Board certified Southfield, MI area cosmetic surgeon Dr. Ali moves the cannula slowly back and forth to break up the fat cells, which are then sucked out through the cannula. Once the fat cells are gone, they are gone for good and fat cells can never return in that area! So, fat loss in the thighs from liposuction is permanent!

Dr. Ali performs minimally invasive tumescent liposuction procedure, so only local anesthetic is used – and you are not “knocked out” with general anesthetic. This leads to faster healing, less discomfort and better results than older, more invasive forms of liposuction.

In order to achieve the best liposuction results in the thighs, they are broken down into three separate treatment areas. The three treatment areas for the thighs are: inner thighs, outer thighs and anterior (also called “frontal”) thighs. Depending upon where the excess fat is deposited, a person may require treatment of a single area, two areas or all three areas of the thigh to get the optimal results.

Inner Thigh Liposuction

Inner thigh liposuction is commonly performed to give a woman slender legs in which the inner thighs do not touch or rub against each other. Not only does inner thigh liposuction enhance the appearance of the legs, it can also eliminate uncomfortable rubbing or chafing.

When treating the inner thighs with liposuction, a skilled surgeon like Dr. Ali may treat all the way down to the inner knee to ensure a consistent, smooth contour..

Outer Thigh Liposuction

Fat bulges on the outer thighs— often called “saddlebags” – can be among the most stubborn areas of body fat. Fat gathered on the outer thighs can make it hard to find jeans and pants that fit – and cause the legs to look shorter than they actually are.

During outer thigh liposuction, a skilled and experienced surgeon like Dr. Ali can restore attractive and feminine proportions to your legs.  Outer thigh liposuction can remove “bulges” or “saddlebags” giving legs the proper contour. Slimmer thighs also actually also help the butt look plumper, and more lifted. By reducing the size and adjusting the proportions of the thighs, Dr. Ali can make the contours of the buttocks more defined and appealing – without the need for an invasive butt lift. the thighs

Anterior (Frontal) Thigh Liposuction

Less commonly, the anterior, or front of the thighs is treated with liposuction. This is typically only done when deposits of fat protrude forward. In some cases, Dr. Ali may perform anterior thigh liposuction in conjunction with performing liposuction on other areas of the thighs to create balance, smoothness and proportion throughout the entire leg.

Excess fat deposits on the front of thighs can causing the body to look “bottom heavy”, the legs to look shorter – and can make it hard to find attractive, comfortably fitting jeans and slacks. Many women with heavy anterior thighs resort to wearing dresses and skirts to hide anterior fat bulges.

A skilled and experienced surgeon like Dr. Ali can slim and restore natural, feminine proportions to the legs by sculpting the anterior thigh, as well as any other areas of the leg that require attention.

Thigh Liposuction vs CoolSculpting for Thighs

Liposuction and CoolSculpting are two excellent procedures offered at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Southfield area for reducing excess fat in the thighs. Each has its own advantages and considerations.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that involves small incisions and provides immediate and highly customizable results but requires anesthesia and/or anesthetic. It also has a longer recovery period with potential swelling and discomfort. CoolSculpting, is a non-invasive treatment, that freezes and eliminates fat cells through controlled cooling, offering minimal downtime and no need for anesthesia or anesthetic. However, CoolSculpting provides much more gradual results over a few months The choice between the two depends on each patient’s preferences, desired outcomes, and willingness to tolerate the level of invasiveness and recovery time associated with liposuction.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali will help you make an informed decision about which procedure is right for slimming your thighs –  based on your specific body concerns, goals, and unique circumstances.

Southfield Area Thigh Liposuction

Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women in Southfield, West Bloomfield, Birmingham and across Oakland County love their legs with interior, exterior and anterior tumescent thigh liposuction. Get a Beautiful Booty with Liposuction for Hips & Saddlebags

Liposuction for Hips and Saddlebags

Any woman with “big hips” will tell you that the hips are one of the hardest places to lose fat. Often times all of the diet and exercise in the world won’t reduce (or change the shape of) stubborn hip fat. This is because a person’s hip shape is primarily the result of heredity. Our DNA tells our body where to store fat – and if it’s on the hips it can be very stubborn.

But the good news is that liposuction can be performed on the hips to dramatically help lose inches and contour the “booty” into a more attractive shape. In fact, the hips are one of the most successful areas to show visible improvement with tumescent liposuction! See Liposuction Before & After Photos

Dr. Ali is an Oakland County board certified plastic surgeon who has helped hundreds of women and men in Oakland County get the appearance they want with tumescent liposuction of the hips. With tumescent liposuction of the hips, patients can drop several dress or pant sizes – and get slimmer, smoother, sexier hip contours..

How Hip Liposuction is Performed

The hips sit just below the flanks (“lovehandles” or “muffin tops”) on either side of the body. Because the flanks and hips are joined, these areas are often (but not always) treated together during liposuction to achieve the most effective results and smoothest contours.

A very thin tube called a micro-cannula is gently inserted into the fatty area. The surgeon carefully moves the cannula slowly back and forth to break up the fat cells. Then a suction-syringe or mild pump is used to suck the fat cells through the cannula and out of the body.

Hip liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure. So only local anesthetic is used, and you go home shortly after the procedure. There are no scars, and very minimal downtime. You will be given specific instructions about wearing a compression garment afterwards – as well as what medications you can take for any pain. However, many women find that the discomfort is minimal and pain medication is not even needed.

Although the results are “immediate” (because the fat has been sucked out) you may not be able to see the complete results until the swelling gradually subsides (in few days to 4 to 6 weeks)..

Hip Liposuction Benefits

During hip and/or flank liposuction, a skilled surgeon like Dr. Ali can restore attractive and feminine proportions to your body.  Hip and flank liposuction can create curves by re-defining the waist and removing the excess fatty tissue that creates a “boxy” look in the mid-section.

Hip liposuction can also remove “bulges” or “saddlebags” where fat is deposited in the wrong places. Giving hips the proper contour with liposuction, actually also helps the butt look plumper and more defined, while making the waist look smaller.

And, for those patients who have unwanted fat in the abdomen or thighs, liposuction can be performed on the hips, belly, and thighs all during the same procedure!

Hip Liposuction Plus Fat Transfer

For even more benefits from hip lipo, fat transfer can be combined with hip liposuction. This process removes fat from unwanted places such as “saddlebags,” and then Dr. Ali uses the purified fat cells to enhance the shape, lift, and proportions of the buttocks.

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or lipofilling, is a popular cosmetic procedure that offers a natural and minimally invasive solution to enhance the buttocks.  This procedure has gained popularity for its ability to provide more rounded, youthful, lifted buttocks and a shapelier body contour.

Hip Liposuction vs CoolSculpting for Saddlebags

Liposuction and CoolSculpting are two excellent procedures offered at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI, for reducing excess fat in areas such as the hips and saddlebags. Each has its own advantages and considerations.

The choice between liposuction and CoolSculpting will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Liposuction is a more aggressive and immediate solution for significant fat removal and contouring. CoolSculpting, on the other hand, is a non-invasive option for those who prefer a less invasive procedure with minimal downtime. CoolSculpting is better suited for smaller, localized “spot reduction” of unwanted areas of fat, while larger amounts of fat can be removed with liposuction. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali will help you make an informed decision based on your specific body concerns, goals, and circumstances.

How to Improve Healing After Liposuction (Part 1)

12 Steps to Faster Healing & Less Downtime After Liposuction

Liposuction is a quite commonly performed permanent fat loss procedure – with more than 250,000 lipo procedures performed in the United States every year. The reason for liposuction’s popularity is the amazing body contouring that takes place – giving people the body they haven’t been able to attain with diet or exercise.

And, while the downtime with liposuction is relatively short (and the pain is relatively minimal), lipo is a surgical procedure that does require time for healing and recovery. As with any surgery there will be some bruising and discomfort for a number of days or a few weeks afterward. And, liposuction swelling can last from 6 weeks to 6 months before fully absorbed.

Patients should never try to “rush” recovery, but there are certain steps one can take to help the body’s natural healing process along. In this article, board-certified Troy, MI area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains some steps you can take to help minimize soreness and accelerate the healing of bruising and swelling after liposuction.

#1. Follow the Liposuction Surgeon’s After Care Instructions

This is the most important step to proper and rapid healing. Your surgeon’s advice may be different than general information found on the Internet.

#2. Wear Your Compression Garment After Liposuction as Instructed

You will be provided with a compression garment and instructions on when to wear it. Your compression garment will help reduce swelling, help the skin contract back into place, minimize discomfort and reduce the likelihood of developing blood clots. Always wear it as instructed!

#3. Avoid Smoking After Liposuction

Smoking interferes with the body’s healing mechanisms and can lead to a slow recovery as well as increase the risks of complications. Smoking also compromises a patient’s immune system which increases the risk of infection at the incision site.

Even smoking just a single cigarette decreases the body’s ability to deliver the nutrients that are necessary for healing after surgery.

#4. Avoid Alcohol After Liposuction

Alcohol, even in moderation, can also interfere with the body’s ability to reduce the inflammation.

Alcohol is also a natural blood thinner, so it can lead to increased bleeding and swelling during surgery – and in the days and weeks following liposuction. And excessive bruising and increased swelling cause more pain and delay healing time.

#5. Increase Protein, Fruits and Vegetables After Liposuction

Proper healing requires good nutrition – especially sufficient protein intake. Fish such as salmon, chicken, nuts, and beans are all excellent sources of protein. Apples, berries, bananas, and an assortment of colorful vegetables will also supply the body with the nutrients it needs to heal.

Salt intake should also be reduce after liposuction – as salt encourages water retention which aggravates swelling. And more swelling means both more pain and a longer time until you see results! This also means NO sports drinks (like Gatorade), vegetable juice (like V8), or other high salt-content drinks.

#6. Supplements May Help Heal After Liposuction

Starting Arnica supplements before liposuction and continuing it for several weeks afterwards can aid in healing.

After lipo surgery Bromelain supplements may also be beneficial. Clinical studies have shown that Bromelain may reduce swelling, bruising, healing time, and pain after surgery. One 200-milligram bromelain tablets taken twice a day is the typically recommended dose for post surgical patients. But ask your liposuction team if and when Bromelain is right for you. Bromelain generally works best when taken on an empty stomach.

Turmeric supplements – or use of the spice turmeric in your food – may also assist in reducing inflammation. 400 to 600 milligrams (mg) of turmeric up to three times per day is the generally suggested dose for inflammation relief.

But always heck with your surgeon to ensure that these – or any post-surgery supplements you wish to take – are safe for you.

How to Improve Healing After Liposuction (Part 2)

12 Steps to Faster Healing & Less Downtime After Liposuction

With more than 250,000 liposuction surgeries performed in the United States every year, it is a safe and effective way to get the body you’ve always wanted.

But while the downtime associated with liposuction is shorter than many surgeries – and the pain is relatively minimal – lipo is still a surgical procedure that will require time for healing and recovery. As with any surgery there will be some bruising and discomfort for a number of days or a few weeks afterward. And, liposuction swelling can last from 6 weeks to 6 months before fully absorbed.

In this two part article article, board-certified Troy, MI area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali shares 12 steps you can take to help minimize discomfort and speed up the healing of bruising and swelling after liposuction.

CLICK HERE FOR PART 1 of TIPS TO SPEED UP LIPOSUCTION HEALING

#7. Topical Creams Reduce Pain, Bruising & Scarring

Applying Arnica Cream is recommended by many plastic surgeons after liposuction to reduce bruising and promote healing.

Emu Oil, though more expensive, is also touted as a natural healing compound that can reduce pain, improve circulation, facilitate healing, and especially reduce any scarring. Clinical studies have determined that post-operative skin care treatment with Emu Oil can accelerate healing due to its ability to reduce inflammation and redness of scars.

Ask your liposuction team when it is safe after surgery for you to use these creams and oils.

#8. Stay Hydrated After Liposuction

We may be stating the obvious, but hydration is a key component of successful liposuction recovery.  Fluids help the body eliminate anesthetic and dead fat cells from one’s system. Hydration is also essential to reduce swelling and promote healing.

#9. Get Plenty of Rest After Liposuction

Getting plenty of sleep and not overdoing activity in the first few weeks following your liposuction is one of the best ways to help your body heal. Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night, and take a nap, chill out, or medicate midday if you are fatigued.

#10. Walk Every Day After Liposuction

Exercise is not recommended during at least the first 6 weeks of liposuction recovery, but light movement multiple times a day can help to speed the body’s healing. Taking short walks a few times per day is a great way to get moving without straining your body or exhausting yourself.

After two or three weeks milder activities such as yoga or swimming can often be resumed as well, if incisions are fully healed. Ask your liposuction team when you mave resume these activities. But sooner is usually better, to keep the body active!

#11. Ask for Help When You Need It After Liposuction

Some daily activities are best left to others while you recovery – so don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it after lipo. Activities such as lifting small children, carrying laundry up the stairs, or unloading groceries from the car can put too much strain on your treatment area. So, ask a family member or friend for help when necessary – especially during the first few weeks after lipo!

Your liposuction team can advise you when you resume normal daily activities such as lifting, carrying, exercising and other strenuous activities.

#12, Massage After Liposuction

Finally, both self-massage and lymphatic drainage massage performed by a professional can help eliminate fluid buildup, hard stops and “lumps & bumps” after liposuction. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage is a specialized form of massage that is believed to decrease recovery time and improve results by reducing post-surgical swelling and minimizing fibrosis (scar tissue formation). Three to five lymphatic massage treatments are typically recommended for optimal results, but patients may experience benefits from as few as one or two treatments. Your surgical team may be able to recommend a Certified Lymphatic Massage therapist in your area.

Gentle self-massage using a cream (like arnica or Emu Oil) or a body butter can also help your treated areas heal smoothly as well as reduce swelling, tightness, and discomfort after liposuction. Your liposuction team can advise you when and how often self-massage or professional massage should be started.

For, many people the only thing holding them back from getting liposuction is concerns about recovery: from worries about downtime and missing work to apprehensions about post-operative pain.

Board-certified Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali has performed more than 1000 liposuction procedures. In this article the lipo experts at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI explain what to expect during the recovery process – so you can decide if liposuction is right for you.

Liposuction Recovery in General

To begin with, remember that ANY surgical recovery varies from one individual to the next. Your age, overall health, skin condition, medical history all play a role in determining your recover speed and comfort.

Additionally, the location and amount of fat that is removed will play a role in your recovery. It’s common sense that more extensive fat removal will require a longer recovery.

And, perhaps most importantly, how well you follow post-operative care instructions can be the biggest factor in ensuring a shorter and more comfortable recovery. For example, smoking and alcohol use during recovery can lead to delays and complications.

Pain During Liposuction Surgery

Patients may feel pressure, but will not feel any pain during their liposuction surgery. This is because will we administer an oral sedative, as well as local anesthetic. The fluid that is introduced to the body during liposuction has lidocaine (numbing agent) right in it, so the treatment area is completely numbed on the inside, as well.

Additionally, thanks to the oral sedative, many patients sleep through the entire lipo procedure and aren’t even aware of what is going on!

Liposuction Recovery: Pain Management

As with any surgery, during the first week or two of recovery, you can expect moderate pain and soreness. The amount and location of the fat removal will affect this to some extent.

We will give you a prescription for a pain medication that should be filled before the surgery and kept at home for use (if needed) during your recovery to make this discomfort manageable. Many patients only need pain medication for 24 hours after surgery – while others may opt to treat the discomfort with Extra Strength Tylenol rather than narcotics.

Limit your activity during this time and wear your compression garment as directed. The compression garment will help prevent swelling and make you much more comfortable – even though it may restrict your movements somewhat.

Normal activities like bending, sitting for a long time, climbing stairs, rolling over in bed, etc. may still cause discomfort for the first two weeks. Most patients find this very tolerable with Extra Strength Tylenol. And our Birmingham, MI patients universally say the discomfort was 100% worth getting a new body that they love!

By the end of the second week there will be a significant reduction in pain and soreness. Around the one-month mark is when most patients no longer feel any pain or soreness. There will still be swelling, which can take several weeks or months to completely subside.

Around the fourth week, most people are cleared to resume light exercise – however heavy or strenuous activity should still be avoided for the full 6 week recovery period. By the six-week mark the majority of bruising and swelling should have subsided, and patients’ activity levels is no longer be restricted (unless otherwise ordered by your surgeon). And your new body contours should be becoming very visible by this point.

What to Expect During Liposuction Recovery: Downtime (Part 2)

How Much Downtime is there after Liposuction?

Liposuction is the second most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S. for a reason – it can truly transform your body in a single procedure with minimal pain and downtime. Every year surgeons perform more than a quarter million liposuction procedures in the United States every year.

Liposuction Recovery: “Downtime”

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so patients almost always go home the same day. You will be very drowsy and will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Most patients sleep or dose most of their first day home.

For about 24 hours there will also be some drainage from the surgical sight. This is very normal. Occasionally Dr. Ali may also use small drains to prevent fluid from building up around the incisions. (We will tell you exactly how to care for them.)

Patients are typically quite sore and likely still feeling residual effects of the anesthesia or pain medication for the next 2 days – so it’s not safe to drive, operate machinery, or go out alone for 48 hours. But walking for 10 minutes every 2 hours can help with the soreness a bit and is also important to prevent the development of blood clots (DVTs).

It’s important to enlist help around the house for the first few days, especially if you have young children to care for!

By the third day most patients are up to gentle daily activities like fixing meals or straightening up the house.

Liposuction Recovery: Time Off Work

Some patients with a “desk job” that does not require strenuous activity, lifting, carrying or prolonged standing may even be able to go back to work on the third day. However, it is very important to get up and move or walk for 10 minutes every couple of hours to prevent blood clots.

This means lipo on a Friday and returning to work on Monday is possible for some (but not all) patients with sedentary jobs. You will still be quite sore on day 3 – so gauge your time off from work accordingly. Dr. Ali can help you with this during your first consultation.

Most people can return to work after a week. But patients with a particularly physical or demanding job, may want to schedule 2 weeks off in order to recover more fully. Discuss the type of work that you do with Dr. Ali during your consultation at our Birmingham, MI office. He will be able to help you assess the amount of time you should schedule off work – based on the extent of your liposuction surgery and the type of work that you perform.
