How Much Does a Facelift Cost?

How Much Does a Facelift Cost?

Asking how much a facelift costs is kind of like asking how much it costs to fix a car – the answer depends upon a wide  variety of factors including how much work needs to be done and who is doing the work!

Facelift prices vary depending on the type of facelift procedure, the skill and experience of the doctor, the facility costs, the anesthetic needed, and even the region you live in. In this article Birmingham, Michigan double board certified plastic surgeon Doctor Ali explains the factors affecting the cost of a Facelift.

The Type of Facelift Procedure

There are several type of facelifts, each of which is designed to address certain signs of aging.

A full face lift typically involves incisions made around the edges of the lower half of the face. The skin of the middle and lower face is loosened and moved and excess skin is removed. The fat and muscle under the skin of the face may also need to be adjusted.

In a mini-face lift, less tissue is moved and removed than in a full lift, with smaller incisions. A traditional full facelift will cost more than a mini facelift, because it is more involved, takes longer and requires larger incisions.

Additionally, newer or more advanced facelift methods, such as endoscopic facelifts, may have a higher cost than traditional procedures.

The type of anesthesia used during your facelift will also affect the cost. Procedures requiring full sedation will cost more than facelifts requiring only local anesthesia. If an anesthesiologist is required to administer the anesthesia, there fees add to the cost of the facelift.

Additional Facelift Costs

In addition to the cost of the anesthesia, the facility where the procedure is performed will affect the cost. Outpatient procedures performed in a surgical facility have lower facility costs than facelifts which require hospitalization.

And, just like houses, restaurants and pretty much anything else, your location will affect the price. Surgeons in high end Beverly Hills may charge two or three times what a Midwest plastic surgeon charges for a facelift.

The Doctor’s Skill and Experience

Finally, highly respected doctors with advanced training will typically charge more than less educated or experienced doctors. However, the extra cost is a small price to pay for excellent surgical results, especially when you are dealing with how your face will look for years to come.

A Maserati costs more than a Mazda – and the same is true of facelift doctors. We have seen some general practice doctors, gynecologists, and even a few dentists try to offer mini-facelifts to their patients – often at reduced rates from what a plastic surgeon would charge.

Keep in mind that facial plastic surgeons like Dr. Ali are certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which ensures that they have extensive training and are up to date on the newest facelift technology and techniques. A “cut rate” facelift can result in undesirable outcomes including bleeding, infection, uneven features, muscle or nerve damage and even facial drooping or disfigurement.

In short, while you don’t need to go to Hollywood and pay triple for a facelift, it is also something that you should not “cut corners” on!

Third Party Facelift Financing

Because facelifts are elective procedures, they are not covered by medical insurance. However, we do offer several financing options through third party health lenders. These companies often offer fixed interest rates, and in some cases no-interest financing if you pay for the facelift within a certain time frame.  We also accept all majort credit cards – which enables you to obtain your facelift now, and pay it off over time.

What is a Stem Cell Face Lift?

What is a Stem Cell Face Lift?

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about celebrities who have undergone “stem cell facelifts” –this new procedure is actually a fat injection process and is not a true facelift at all!

Sometimes called a “liquid facelift” or even a Vampire Face lift, the Stem Cell Facelift refers to fat injections into the face that add volume to facial areas that lack fullness. While a Stem Cell Facelifts is a safe, non-surgical procedure with minimal or no downtime, it cannot correct many of the issues that a true facelift can.

Difference between Stem Cell Facelifts & Actual Facelift

An actual facelift involves an incision (or a series of incisions), in which a plastic surgeon lifts the facial skin and/or the connective tissue underneath, and may also include removal of excess skin. A surgical facelift procedure treats facial laxity and removes sagging and drooping. A full surgical facelift offers results that can last up to 10 years.

During a stem cell facelift, fat cells (and the stem cells within them) are extracted from the patient’s own body (hips, belly, or thighs) via a gentle liposuction procedure. The fat cells are then processes and re-injected into the face by needle to contour and fill-in hollow areas in the cheeks, under-eye, lips and other parts of the face.

While injecting fat into the face can plump lines, folds and wrinkles, these injections do not fix drooping, lax or sagging skin. In fact, fat injections into droopy skin may even cause the skin to sag further! Additionally, the results of stem cell facelifts (fat augmentation) generally can be expected to last only up to two years.

Benefits of Stem Cell Face Lift

Because a stem cell facelift is minimally invasive – using only a small incision to extract the fat – there is little to no downtime or recovery period.

Fat augmentation can be performed by Dr. Ali on its own – but it is often used in addition to the lifting and tightening performed with other actual facelift procedures. So fat augmentation can be a useful tool to plump up certain areas in conjunction with a facelift that tightens the skin and removes laxity.

Downside of Stem Cell Face Lifts

While there is little downtime or risk with fat augmentation (“stem cell facelift”) it cannot correct severe or even moderate laxity and dropping.

“Stem Cell” fat injection to the face is also a fairly costly procedure – especially when compared to other “fillers” (both synthetic and natural) that are on the market. If you simply want to “fill” or plump some areas, Dr. Ali offers less expensive alternatives such as Juvéderm and Renuva, which may be more cost effective for you.

Stem Cell Face Lifts: The Bottom Line

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) all recommend holding off on “stem cell” cosmetic procedures at this time, stating that there really is not enough evidence to support their use at this time.

If you are interested in facial rejuvenation using plumping “fillers” or fat augmentation, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali will offer you a consultation to discuss your options.

He has years of experience performing state-of-the-art surgical techniques and tried-and-true procedures – from full face lifts to injectable fillers – that can correct the visible signs of aging.

Face Lifts: About Thread Lifts & Lifestyle Lifts

Face Lifts: Beware of Lunchtime Lift, Lifestyle Lift, Thread Lift & Feather Lift

In our previous article we discussed the primary facelift techniques performed by reputable Board Certified Plastic Surgeons. However, many men and women are still curious about facelift techniques they may have heard about on TV, online or in commercials or late-night infomercials – such as “Lifestyle Lift” or “Thread Lifts.”

Most of these fly-by-night, trendy procedures are not performed – and not recommended – by experienced and reputable board certified plastic surgeons. Though advertised as “fast and easy” with minimal downtime, these procedures have many limitations, offer poor results, and any temporary cosmetic benefits do not last very long.

Face Lifts: Thread Lift and Feather Lift

The thread lift, or feather lift, generated a lot of advertising and media buzz a few years ago. Who wouldn’t want a tighter, more youthful appearance with just a few stitches and very little downtime? But, as with most things in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The thread lift was touted as being able to lift sagging facial skin without invasive surgery. Tiny suture barbs (hooked stitches) were used to gather the skin layers and pull them upward, thereby tightening the skin. The barbs are attached to a thread that pulls the skin tight – and the stitches permanently stay in the skin following the procedure.

Think of it kind of like pulling your skin back using scotch tape! While it does initially create some tightness to the skin, it loosens vary rapidly.

There is no “nipping and tucking” – and no removal of excess skin. The procedure also has no effect on the SMAS layer below the skin, where the muscles used for smiling, frowning, and other facial expressions are.

A full face lift can last up to 10 years or longer – while many patients who have received Thread Lift or Feather Lift facelifts see their skin begin to loosen after just a few months.

Face Lifts: Lifestyle Lift

Lifestyle Lift claimed that their facelift offered the same results as more extensive face lifts, while being less invasive and offering rapid recovery times.  They used terms like “revolutionary procedure” to market their facelifts – but then were legally required to retract these claims because they had no evidence to back them up.

Lifestyle Lift was forced to cease its operations due to bankruptcy, as well as multiple malpractice suits – and being discovered having posted false patient reviews.

While Lifestyle Lift offered face lifts that were about a third lower in price than traditional facelifts – patients soon learned that “you get what you pay for.”  As a result these high volume and low price facelifts ended up requiring more expensive revision surgery down the line for many patients.

Face Lifts: The Bottom Line

Shopping for a facelift based on flashy commercials, low prices, or exaggerated marketing promises is always a bad idea. When you are considering surgical procedures – especially on your face – the only safe option is to discuss your preferences, goals and facelift options with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon.

Types of Facelifts (Part 2)

Types of Facelifts (Part 2)

There are several different types of facelift procedures and techniques, offering different cosmetic results, and varying degrees of invasiveness, downtime and recovery.  Different types of facelifts target different areas of the face – and can have varying types and shapes of incisions, and different numbers of tissue layers treated.

In Part One of this article Birmingham, Michigan double board certified plastic surgeon explained Full Facelifts, SMAS Facelifts and Short Scar (S and MAC) facelifts. He will also offer you a consultation in our Birmingham office to understand your needs, answer your questions, and help you choose the type of facelift that is right for you.

Endoscopic Facelift

While the endoscopic facelift is much less invasive, and has a much shorter recovery time, this type of facelift is effective only for cheek sagging. Any neck lifting cannot be done endoscopically. Endoscopic facelifts typically do not have the dramatic results, or the longevity, of full or SMAS facelifts (discussed in Part 1).

During the endoscopic facelift procedures, a pencil-shaped probe with a tiny camera attached to it is inserted under the facial skin, to transmit video of the internal facial structures to a monitor screen in the operating room.

Typically, the camera (endoscope) is inserted using three or more small incisions that are usually less than one inch long. These tiny scars can be easily hidden, and fade rapidly over time because they are so small.

Endoscopic facelifts offer the advantage of being able to be performed an outpatient basis, requiring only local or intravenous anesthesia. In addition to less scarring, the smaller incisions result in a much faster recovery – and also offer a lower risk of nerve damage, infection, bleeding or other side effects.

The Midface Facelift or Cheek Lift

The midface facelift or “cheek lift” targets only the middle third of the face. Midface facelifts can improve nose-to-mouth lines (“parentheses” or “puppet lines”) and can also be used to lift sagging cheeks.

Typically, an incision is placed in the hairline and the inside of the mouth. The cosmetic surgeon then lifts and repositions the natural fatty layer over your cheekbones.

An isolated mid-facelift can be also sometimes be performed done endoscopically, or through the lower eyelid when eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is done.

The midface facelift or “cheek lift” provides a more subtle freshening-up of the appearance, with minimal risk and less downtime than full facelifts or SMAS facelifts.

Stem Cell Facelift (not a true facelift)

While new “stem cell facelifts” are making the news, this procedure is in fact not actually a facelift at all. The so-called “stem cell facelift” involves fat injections (“augmentation”) into areas of the face to add volume.

Facelift surgery lifts the skin and connective tissue (and removes excess skin) to treat facial sagging. In a stem cell facelift, on the other hand, fat and stem cells are injected into the face to contour and fill in the cheeks, under-eye hollows, lips and other areas of the face.

In this process fat cells (and the stem cells within them) are harvested by liposuction from other areas on the body (such as tummy, buttocks, and thighs). These fat cells are then processed and injected into the facial lines, folds and hollows to create plumping.

Fat augmentation can be performed by Dr. Ali on its own – or in addition to the lifting and tightening performed with other actual facelift procedures. While there is little downtime or risk with fat augmentation (“stem cell facelift”) it cannot correct severe or even moderate laxity and dropping.

Lifestyle Lifts & Thread Lifts (not recommended)

Some men and women are still curious about facelift techniques they may have heard about in commercials – such as “Lifestyle Lift” or “Thread Lifts.” These fly-by-night, trendy procedures are no longer performed by experienced and reputable plastic surgeons.

Though “fast and easy” with minimal downtime, these procedures had many limitations, often offered poor results, and any cosmetic benefits did not last very long. You can read more about these inferior facelift procedures in our article HERE.

There are several different types of facelift procedures and techniques, offering different cosmetic results, and varying degrees of invasiveness, downtime and recovery.  Different types of facelifts target different areas of the face – and can have varying types and shapes of incisions, and different numbers of tissue layers treated.

In this article Birmingham, Michigan double certified plastic surgeon explains the different general types of Facelift. He will also offer you a consultation in our Birmingham office to understand your needs, answer your questions, and help you choose the type of facelift that is right for you.

The Deep Plane Facelift

The deep plane lift facelift is a “full” facelift that is recommended for people with severe facial sagging and laxity, and for those men and women desiring a longer-lasting facelift.

Full, deep plane facelifts involve lifting and separating the skin from the “SMAS” layer below it and releasing and repositioning the muscles used for smiling, frowning, and other facial expressions.

Typically an incision is made along the hairline, from the hair-bearing temple area, the incisions are extended downward along natural creases, proceeding inside the ear, then along the ear lobe, and ending out of sight behind the ears.

After the SMAS is repositioned, excess and loose skin is removed, and the edges are sutured or stapled in place.

The effects of a full facelift can last from 10 to 15 years, and sometimes longer. Because of the extensive nature of a full facelift, the recovery time is longer than other facelift procedures.

The SMAS Facelift

The SMAS facelift affects the superficial top layers of skin and the deeper tissues of the face and neck – and are ideal for men and women with mild laxity, some jowls and mid-face sagging due to aging.

In an SMAS facelift, the plastic surgeon creates an incision at the temple, above the hairline, which extends downward, following the skin’s natural crease in front of the ear, below the ear lobe and then behind your ear.

The plastic surgeon then tightens the SMAS (the muscles used for smiling, frowning, and other facial expressions) using sutures. Any excess skin is then removed and the remaining skin is stitched up.

The SMAS lift differs from a deep plane lift in that no “attachments” underneath the SMAS are released during the process. Though not as long lasting as a full facelift, an SMAS Facelift comes with less recovery time.

Short Scar Facelifts

A “short scar facelift” is just a general term for several facelift techniques that require smaller scars. Short scar lifts, are good options for people in their 40s and 50s with minimal to moderate excess skin, or those who have no visible signs of aging on the neck.

S-shaped and MAC (minimal access cranial suspension) facelifts are both short scar facelifts. Unlike other types of facelifts, short scar facelift incisions do not extend behind the ear. However, the surgeon still re-suspends the tissues that supports the smile lines and jowls, and can tighten a moderate amount of loose skin.

Cosmetic botox injection in the female face.

The Latest Advancements in Face Lift & Cosmetic Facial Surgery

Clarkston, MI – Anti-aging is all the rage, with most people trying their hardest to look, act, and feel younger than their chronological years. Botox has reigned supreme for years as the preferred injectable cosmetic procedure to erase fine lines and wrinkles.

Fillers, too, have become a mainstream way to add volume to the cheeks and other facial areas.

But, while injectables and fillers can give the patient more facial volume and return a more youthful appearance, nothing will replace the effects of the traditional facelift.

It should be no surprise, then, that facelift surgeries have remained one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, mostly due to the recent upsurge in cutting-edge plastic surgery technology.

In fact, recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reveal that, since the year 2000, facelifts have remained steady as one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, with over 130,000 lifts being performed on patients every year.

Facelifts aren’t the only surgery benefitting from this new technology. Now, other facial cosmetic surgeries are also proving popular with patients of all ages.

What is this new technology?

Endoscopes for More Precision

A recent advancement in plastic surgery is the endoscope used in facial rejuvenation. An endoscope consists of a small camera that can be inserted through a tiny incision in the skin. The device then transmits an image of the underlying tissues onto a nearby monitor. Endoscopes have been used for years by orthopedic surgeons to treat cartilage damage and by gynecologists to examine pelvic organs.

Endoscopes Used in Facelifts

Now, endoscopes are being used in cosmetic surgery. Not only are facelifts more precise with these devices, but brow lifts can be performed through several minuscule incisions in the scalp. Prior to endoscopes, brow lifts required an “ear to ear” incision.

Patients who complain about an abundance of wrinkles and sagging jowls will be happy to know that the endoscope now makes facial plastic surgery much easier. By placing several tiny incisions in the scalp region and lower eyelids, a plastic surgeon can erase those wrinkles and diminish the appearance of jowls.

The best candidates for these types of procedures are patients in their thirties or forties with good skin tone. Recovery time is significantly longer than one would experience with a traditional facelift, and this is due to the swelling that typically persists for several weeks.

While an extended recovery period sounds daunting, these advanced procedures have finally brought the possibility of facelifts to much younger patients with better and longer-lasting results.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Lasers have revolutionized the way the medical community administers treatments. Lasers are used by dentists, doctors, and plastic surgeons. One of the newest and most interesting uses of lasers is in the procedure known as skin resurfacing.

Using a carbon dioxide laser that pulses at extremely high frequencies, the plastic surgeon can perform a procedure similar to dermabrasion. In a single treatment, the surgeon can erase fine wrinkles around the mouth, and folds along the eyelids can be significantly reduced. This is all with less tissue destruction than is typically seen with traditional dermabrasion methods.

Conclusion

Your appearance can have a major impact on your self-esteem and your performance at work and in life. The good news is that plastic surgeons now have more ways than ever of making you look as young as you feel.

Non-invasive fillers, injectables, and topical cosmetic procedures can help you dip your toes in the water, so to speak, before you commit to a procedure like a facelift. However, with technology making procedures like the facelift and eyebrow lift easier and more effective, it will be exciting to see what comes next for this life-changing industry.

8 Plastic Surgery Procedures That Can Make Your Face Look Years Younger

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Are you watching the years pass by every time you look in the mirror? Do fine lines and wrinkles have you looking way past your used by date? Maybe it’s time for a new, younger looking you in the new year.

Dr. Ali offers eight facial plastic surgery procedures at Amae Plastic Surgery Center that can help you look as young as you feel.

From your forehead and neck to your ears and nose, Dr. Ali can transform your appearance to one that is more aesthetically pleasing to every eye.

Here are the eight surgeries Dr. Ali recommends if you don’t quite like one or more aspects of your facial appearance.

Brow Lift

Droopy eyebrows and deep forehead lines can easily be corrected with a brow lift. During the treatment, Dr. Ali will remove some of the muscle and tissue, then raise your eyebrows. This has the effect of smoothing the forehead while minimizing frown lines.

In the past, this procedure involved a large incision across the scalp. Thanks to more advanced techniques in modern plastic surgery, Dr. Ali will only need to make two tiny incisions behind the hair line. These scars are completely invisible once healed.

In some cases, this procedure is performed in conjunction with eyelid surgery.

Eyelid Surgery

Are your eyelids beginning to bulge or wrinkle? Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can correct excess skin and fat, which contributes to the effect known as bags under the eyes.

During treatment, Dr. Ali will tighten your eyelid skin while preserving and redistributing the fat around your eyes to achieve a more natural appearance.

Facelift

Age can wreak havoc on our faces. We develop cheek folds, saggy cheeks (jowls), and a wrinkled neck. To erase years from your face, Dr. Ali recommends a facelift.

A facelift involves the removal of excess tissue and the tightening of your facial skin. In some cases, your face can be repositioned without external scarring. Most patients who receive facelifts are between 40 and 60 years of age, however even those in their 70s and 80s have experienced excellent results.

Necklift

Age affects the face negatively, but our necks get it the worst. A wrinkled neck is hardly attractive. To achieve a smoother, more defined neck area, Dr. Ali suggests a necklift.
During a necklift procedure, excess fatty deposits will be removed and the skin stretched to create a smoother, more defined neck area.

In many cases a necklift will be performed in conjunction with a facelift. The procedure takes around 2.5 hours and you’ll be home the same day.

Facial Reconstruction

For the correction of large, unsightly scars or facial wounds, Dr. Ali recommends scar revision or skin grafting.

Skin revision involves the meticulous practice of changing the direction of the scar so that it blends with your normal skin crease.

Skin grafting is one of the most common reconstructive procedures. The treatment can cover large wounds, which would otherwise take months to heal.

Dr. Ali will harvest skin from another area of your body (called the donor site) and will then apply that tissue to the wound (recipient site). The newly applied tissue will reestablish blood supply by stimulating the growth of fine blood vessels also known as capillaries. The process takes about a week to complete and can help you heal much quicker with a focus on aesthetics.

Nose Reshaping

Rhinoplasty also referred to as a “nose job” can alter the size, shape, and, in some cases, the function of your nose. In other words, not only can Dr. Ali make you happier with your nose, but he can correct breathing problems caused by a deviated septum or by providing support to certain areas of your nose.

Dr. Ali will either make incisions inside of the nose (called “closed rhinoplasty”) or across the columella, the strip of tissue separating the nostrils (called “open rhinoplasty”). The nose will then be built up to achieve a more aesthetically-pleasing form and, in some cases, improve your breathing.

Cheek Implants

With more aesthetic facial contours, you can look like a whole new person. Dr. Ali uses facial implants to provide your face with a more harmonious balance. Cheek implants are safe, effective, and can help you finally feel great about the way you look.

Ear Surgery

Deformed ears can detract from your appearance. Otoplasty or ear surgery can make your ears appear more symmetrical and balanced, leading to improved aesthetics without affecting your hearing one bit.

It’s a new year. Don’t you think it’s also time for a new, younger looking you? Contact Dr. Ali today at Amae Plastic Surgery Center and ask about one or more of the above procedures to turn back the clock in the new year.

Looking Younger With a Facelift vs. Liquid Facelift, What’s the Difference?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – When the goal is to look years younger, a facelift is the way to go. What facelift, then, should one choose?

It’s not common knowledge that there are two types of facelifts. There’s the traditional facelift, and then there’s the less known liquid facelift. What’s the difference?

Top Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. M. Azhar Ali explains the advantages and disadvantages of these two image-enhancing treatments.

Liquid Facelift

The liquid facelift isn’t much of a lift at all. It’s a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves the use of transdermal fillers.

Dr. Ali performs liquid facelifts in his Bloomfield Hills, Detroit office, and says that many patients remain unaware that liquid facelifts, while they are able to turn back time on the face, aren’t permanent.

Liquid facelifts make use of injectable fillers that are comprised of biocompatible materials. The fillers provide volume to areas of the face that have become sunken and misshapen due to age. The fillers smooth wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance.

According to Dr. Ali, the dermal fillers will eventually become absorbed by the body, prompting the patient to undergo a follow-up procedure to lengthen the effects.

Dr. Ali points to a myriad of benefits to liquid facelifts, however. In addition to giving the patient a more youthful appearance, there is little to no discomfort and almost no downtime.

The cost of a liquid facelift is also very affordable. Though the cost of the procedure is one area Dr. Ali hopes that patients will analyze carefully before making a decision to undergo this life-enhancing procedure.

“Any doctor can take a weekend course and call themselves a cosmetic surgeon,” says Dr. Ali. The Hour-Detroit magazine’s top doc 2016 award winner says that many patients may turn to subpar cosmetic surgeons in an effort to save money, but patient beware.

Dr. Ali says that only a plastic surgeon who has undergone years of intensive study after medical school can perform liquid facelifts, in addition to traditional facelifts, with the care and precision patients expect.

Dr. Ali says that cost should never be a factor when it comes to one’s appearance. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Dr. Ali advises patients to research the procedure and doctor heavily before signing up for liquid facelifts or any other cosmetic procedure.

Traditional Facelift

The traditional facelift is a surgical treatment that involves the drawing back and tightening of the face. This also smooths out wrinkles and can do away with sagging cheeks (jowls). Unlike liquid facelifts, however, the effects are permanent and more natural-looking when done well.

Dr. Ali has performed dozens of facelifts in his years at Amae Plastic Surgery Center and says that while the cost may be higher, and there may be some downtime following the procedure, patients are typically happier with the long-lasting effects of a facelift when compared to the temporary effects of a liquid facelift.

Both the liquid facelift and facelift can erase the years and give an ample boost to your self-esteem. Dr. Ali says that if budget is a concern, a liquid facelift is a perfectly viable alternative to the traditional facelift. However, only the facelift can provide the longevity and youthfulness that is sought out by most plastic surgery patients.

Prepare to Kiss That Turkey Neck Goodbye

Rochester Hills, MI – Individuals who are self-conscious of their “turkey necks” can now rejoice. A highly-decorated plastic surgeon in Rochester Hills, Michigan has the sagging neck solutions they have all been searching for.

“I have patients come into my practice all the time looking to tighten their sagging necks,” says Plastic Surgeon Dr. M Azhar Ali, who operates AMAE Plastic Surgery Center. He adds, “Luckily for them, there are quite a few solutions that we offer.”

Millions of Americans suffer from an unflattering neck area. This wrinkled or sagging skin can cause a person to look much older than his or her chronological age. It can also give off the appearance of being heavy, even if the person is of average weight.

Just because a person has sagging skin around the neck does not mean he or she has to live with it, however.

Dr. Ali says that with just one or more cosmetic procedures, a person can learn to be proud of their neck instead of constantly hiding it from the world.

What Causes Turkey Neck?

In some cases, turkey neck can be caused by significant weight loss. The fat may have disappeared, but the skin no longer has the elasticity to shrink back into place.

In other cases, the condition is hereditary. If one or both parents suffered from a sagging, wrinkled neck, chances are their offspring will too.

The condition can also be a product of age. Unfortunately, the neck is the one area that gives away how old we look, despite the appearance of the rest of our body.

No matter what caused the excess and/or sagging skin to form around the neck area, there are some practical solutions. Most of them involve minimally invasive surgery and short recovery times, which is great news. The patient could be back to work in short order looking and feeling more confident and self-assured.

Here are the procedures that have helped others say goodbye to their turkey necks for good.

Neck Contouring

This is a surgical technique that produces a slimmer, smoother neckline. In some cases, the procedure is combined with others that also shape the chin and tighten the skin on the face.

Here are the procedures that are typically performed during a neck contouring operation.

Neck Liposuction

For patients that suffer from an unsightly double chin even though they are not overweight, Dr. Ali recommends this simple procedure.

Neck Liposuction removes the excess fat, thus slimming the neckline. Dr. Ali recommends this procedure for younger patients (20’s to 50’s) whose skin still retains a certain amount of elasticity.

When skin has lost its elasticity, neck liposuction, unfortunately, won’t do much good. The idea is to have the skin contract evenly after the surgery is complete. Otherwise, the skin around the neck will merely sag, and the patient will be back to square one.

The good news is that this procedure is a quick one. Using nothing more than a local anesthetic, the cosmetic surgeon will make one or two tiny incisions (usually concealed under the chin or behind the ears) whereby the excess fat is removed.

The patient will then wear a supportive chin strap for a few days and be back to work within a week in most cases (returning to full activity within the span of two weeks).

The result is a newly refined jawline and a naturally contoured chin and neck.

Neck Lift

Patients that don’t have excess neck fat, but still experience sag, may benefit from neck lift surgery.

There are essentially two types of neck lifts. Cervicoplasty is the procedure that is used to remove the excess skin around the neck. Platysmaplasty will tighten loose neck muscles.

In some cases, the plastic surgeon will perform both procedures for a more defined neck area.

Unlike neck liposuction, neck lifts are performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. A small incision is placed behind each ear. If the case warrants it, a third incision may be placed under the chin.

It is through these cuts that the cosmetic surgeon will tighten the neck muscles and remove the excess skin.

Recovering from a neck lift depends on the patient’s state of health and the extent of the procedure. In most cases, the individual will be able to return to work within two weeks.

It is common for the person to feel tightness in the neck area post-surgery and bruising and swelling may also occur. These symptoms are normal and will diminish with time.

When the patient does fully recover, he or she will be able to look in the mirror and enjoy a smoother neck without all the wrinkles and creases.

“This tends to boost the person’s self-esteem considerably,” says Dr. Ali.

Have Realistic Expectations

While these neck contouring procedures can help patients look years younger and more attractive, they are not anti-aging cures. No amount of surgery can stop the aging process, but aging can be slowed by choosing a qualified cosmetic surgeon.

For individuals who are thinking about one or more operations for what is commonly known as “turkey neck”, or for other parts of the body, such as the face, chin, and nose, be aware that these procedures can be combined with others to improve one’s appearance and self-esteem.

What Causes a Doublie Chin?

Bloomfield Hills, MI – When you look in the mirror, are you embarrassed by what looks like a double chin? Do you try to find ways to hide it in pictures? Before discussing how to get rid of your double chin, it’s important to understand what causes it.

“While a double chin may make your face look heavier, a double chin isn’t an indication that you are fat,” says Dr. Ali, a Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon. “Gaining weight doesn’t always mean you’ll get a double chin, and likewise, losing weight doesn’t necessarily mean your double chin will go away. Weight gain can lead to the appearance of a double chin, but there are other factors, as well.”

A double chin is caused when excess fat and loose skin gather in the neck area, leading to the appearance of a fuller, almost second chin.

Aging can lead to the onset of a double chin. Our muscles weaken as we age, which allows for the fat deposits to hang lower than they otherwise would.

For some people, their double chin is simply the result of their genetics, and therefore almost impossible to avoid. And some people just may have more fat cells in their chin region, causing a double chin even though they may be younger and on the slimmer side.

The way your bones and muscles form can also lead to the appearance of a double chin, along with facial expressions we make. Some facial movements can actually lead to structural changes in our appearance over time, leading to the appearance of a double chin.

But if you are embarrassed by your double chin, there are great ways to minimize the appearance and bring your face to proper proportions.

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures, and can be a great way to remove the appearance of a double chin, if you don’t also have excess skin involved. Because the neck doesn’t really respond to exercise, no amount of dieting or working out may be able to remove those stubborn fat deposits of the double chin.

Liposuction can be used to remove the excess fat deposits, and contour the chin to provide the patient the desired look.

If your double chin is accompanied by sagging, loose skin and/or thick neck bands, a neck lift will be a better option for you.

Incisions will be placed under the chin and around the ears. The excess skin will be removed, and liposuction can also be used to remove the fatty deposits. Dr. Ali will tighten the neck muscles to ensure the most beautiful and natural looking result.

“Neck lifts are a wonderful way to get rid of double chins, and provide patients with the look they want,” says Dr. Ali. “The patient will be on bedrest for about 2 days following the procedure, and will have a bit of swelling and bruising in the first week. But by six weeks out, normal activities can be resumed, and patients love to show off their news, slimmer looking neck.”
