How Different Skin Types Affect Face Lift Results

Your Skin Types Affects Your Face Lift Results

At AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali is often asked “What will my face lift look like?” But face lift surgery is not “one size fits all” with uniform results.

An individual’s face lift results are influenced by a wide variety of factors, including the patient’s skin type, elasticity, thickness, and pigment. The key to getting the best face lift surgery results is choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in the Troy, MI area – who is trained and experienced in working with all types of skin.

Top Troy, MI area facelift surgeon, Dr. Ali considers all of your skin variables to tailor his surgical approach for each patient, ensuring the best results that are customized to the patient’s unique skin characteristics. In this article he explores how different skin characteristics can affect the best face lift surgery results.

Face Lifts & Skin Elasticity

Skin elasticity plays a critical role in facelift surgery. Elasticity refers to the skin’s ability to return to its original shape after being stretched. This is largely due to collagen and elastin fibers, which are proteins that provide the scaffolding and plumpness of the skin.

However, collagen and elastic production decreases as we age. In many cases this is due to the decline in hormone production that occurs with menopause in women and andropause in men.

Younger patients typically have more elastic skin, which can result in a smoother and more natural post-surgical appearance. As elasticity diminishes over time, the skin becomes less resilient, making it more prone to sagging and wrinkles. For this reason, patients in their 40s may only require a “mini face lift” – while patients in their 50s and 60s may need a full face lift, as well an accompanying neck lift.

Board certified Troy, MI area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali uses advanced face lift techniques to address varying degrees of skin elasticity. For patients with reduced elasticity, he may incorporate additional procedures, such as deep plane facelifts or SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) lifts, which target deeper layers of the face to provide more substantial and long-lasting results. These methods help to reposition underlying muscles and tissues, enhancing the structural support of the face and neck.

Face Lifts & Skin Thickness

The thickness of the skin also impacts facelift outcomes. Men typically have thicker skin than women, younger patients will generally have thicker skin than mature patients, and certain ethnicities also may be genetically predisposed to thicker skin.

Thicker skin generally has more collagen, providing better support for a robust face lift – where some stretching is required. However, thicker skin can also present challenges during surgery due to its density, requiring precise techniques to ensure a smooth and natural result. Additionally, some ethnicities with thicker skin are more prone to scarring – making it essential to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in the Troy, MI area for your face lift.

Conversely, thinner skin is easier to manipulate but it may show more signs of aging, such as fine lines and increased sagging – and may not be as “stretchable” during a face lift. Patients with thinner skin often benefit from techniques that focus on enhancing skin quality and providing gentle lifts.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali in the Troy, MI area has the training and the experience to work with all skin types, to ensure the best face lift results for patients of all skin types, ensuring a natural, youthful appearance while minimizing visible scarring.

Face Lifts & Skin Pigment

Skin pigmentation is a crucial considerations in face lift surgery, particularly for patients with darker skin tones. These patients are at a higher risk of hyperpigmentation and visible scarring due to the increased melanin in their skin.

Dr. Ali has performed face lift surgery on hundreds of men and women with darker skin with the best face lift results. He employs advanced surgical techniques to minimize these risks, ensuring that incisions are placed in the least conspicuous areas and are as small as possible.

For darker skin tones, post-operative care is equally important. Dr. Ali provides comprehensive aftercare plans that include the best face lift post-op treatments to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes and promote even healing.

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in the Troy, MI area helps ensure that they understand the unique needs of darker skin tones and will use strategies to protect the skin’s integrity and enhance healing, ensuring that the best face lift results that are harmonious and natural.

Face Lifts & Ethnicity

Ethnicity significantly influences skin factors and signs of aging that must be considered when seeking the best face lift surgery. Different ethnic groups exhibit distinct aging patterns and skin characteristics, which must be considered to achieve the best face lift results. For instance, Black patients may have a higher propensity for keloid or hypertrophic scarring. Dr. Ali uses specific techniques and post-operative treatments to minimize scarring, ensuring a smooth recovery.

Asian patients often experience different aging patterns compared to Caucasians, such as a broader facial structure and less pronounced nasolabial folds. These differences require tailored surgical approaches to address volume loss and sagging while maintaining the patient’s natural facial harmony. For Asian Face lift patients Dr. Ali may employ techniques that are designed to enhance the mid-face and provide a subtle lift that respects the patient’s ethnic features.

Most importantly, cultural ideals of beauty can vary significantly between ethnic groups. Dr. Ali respects and preserves his patients’ ethnic heritage by understanding and incorporating these ideals into his surgical plans to ensure the best face lift results, so that you still look like you (only younger!).

This procedure can take ten to fifteen years off of one’s appearance, boosting confidence and self-esteem, by helping you look as young on the outside as you feel on the inside.

The results of facelift surgery are very long-lasting, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle and skincare routine. But because facelift surgery only targets the lower two-thirds of the face, to achieve even more dramatic and harmonious results, facelift surgery can be combined with various other procedures.

Dr. Ali is well-known as one of the best facelift surgeons in the Troy, MI area because he specializes in integrating multiple techniques and procedures to create a customized treatment plan tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

Combining Facelift Surgery with Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can be performed alongside a facelift to rejuvenate the eye area. This procedure involves removing excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids, reducing puffiness, bags, and drooping lids.

Combining blepharoplasty with a facelift ensures that the rejuvenation of the face includes the eye area, creating a more alert and refreshed appearance – so that the eyes look as youthful as the rest of the face.

Combining Facelift Surgery with Eyebrow Lift

An eyebrow lift, or brow lift, is another eye area procedure that can be combined with facelift surgery for the best results. An eyebrow lift raises sagging eyebrows and smooths out forehead wrinkles, complementing the effects of a facelift.

By addressing the upper third of the face, an eyebrow lift enhances the overall balance and harmony of your facelift surgery. This procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals with heavy, drooping brows that can make them appear tired, angry, or older.

Combining Facelift Surgery with a Neck Lift

A neck lift is the most frequently performed surgical procedure in conjunction with facelift surgery to address sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle banding in the neck. Neck lift surgery enhances the definition and tightness of the jawline and neck, ensuring a seamless transition from the youthful face to the neck.

Combining facelift surgery with a neck lift is one of the best ways to provide comprehensive rejuvenation, as the neck is often one of the first areas to show signs of aging.

Combining Facelift Surgery with Autologous Fat Transfer

Autologous fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, involves harvesting fat from one part of the body where it is unwanted (like the belly or thighs) and injecting it into areas of the face that have lost volume.

This technique enhances the results of a facelift surgery by restoring youthful fullness to the cheeks, under-eye areas, jawline, lips, and other areas where volume is needed. Using the patient’s own fat ensures a natural look and feel, with long lasting results.

Unlike fillers, the transferred living fat cells become part the face and are not absorbed and eliminated by the body like fillers. Additionally, facelift surgery with fat transfer offers the added benefit of skin rejuvenation due to the stem cells present in the fat.

What is Autologous Fat Transfer?

Autologous fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, involves harvesting fat from one part of the patient’s body and transferring it to another area. This technique is particularly effective for facial rejuvenation, as it uses the patient’s own fat cells, reducing the risk of allergic reactions, infection, or other adverse side effects, while providing a natural feel and appearance.

The extracted fat is then purified through a process that removes excess fluids and impurities, ensuring that only healthy, living fat cells are used for the transfer.

Once purified, the fat is carefully injected into specific areas of the face that have lost volume due to aging. This can include the cheeks, under-eye areas, nasolabial folds, and jawline. Additionally, he can use fat transfer during facelift surgery to improve skin texture and tone, because the transferred fat contains stem cells that promote tissue regeneration. This comprehensive approach not only lifts and tightens the skin but also rejuvenates the overall appearance, providing a more youthful and refreshed look.

Benefits of Autologous Fat Transfer in Facelifts

Autologous fat transfer offers numerous benefits when incorporated into facelift surgery. To begin with, autologous fat transfer enhances facial volume, which traditional facelifts alone do not achieve. The procedure also promotes skin regeneration due to the stem cells present in the fat, leading to improved skin texture and tone.

Another one of the primary advantages that fat transfer achieves is the natural look and feel that it provides – since the transferred fat is sourced from the patient’s own body. Additionally, autologous fat transfer reduces the risk of allergic reactions, rejection, infection, or adverse side effects because the cells come from the patient’s own body.

Furthermore, using the patient’s own fat results in significantly longer-lasting outcomes compared to synthetic fillers. Fillers dissipate and are absorbed and eliminated by the body in 6 month to a couple years. But because the transferred fat cells are living, they become a permanent part of the patient’s facial structure and are not eliminated over time like fillers.

Ask the Surgeon: What’s the Best Age for a Facelift?

Detroit Surgeons Discuss the Best Age to Get a Facelift

The decision to undergo a facelift is a highly personal one and depends on various factors, including individual aging processes, lifestyle, budget, and ultimate cosmetic goals. As one of Detroit’s best facelift surgeons, Dr. Ali is frequently asked, “When is the best age to get a facelift?”

As any top facelift surgeon will tell you, everyone’s face ages differently, due to a wide variety of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, environmental factors, stress, smoking, diet, sun exposure, skin care, and more. So, there is no one specific age that is “best” for facelift surgery.

As one of the best Detroit facelift surgeons, Dr. Ali understands that the best age for a facelift varies for each person. In this article he explores the considerations for different age groups when considering facelift surgery.

When is Too Young to Get a Facelift?

Facelifts are typically recommended for individuals who have visible signs of aging and skin sagging that cannot be effectively addressed with less invasive treatments. For most people, these signs do not appear until their 40s. Undergoing a facelift too early, such as in your 20s or early 30s, is generally not recommended because the skin and underlying structures are usually still firm and resilient.

However, younger individuals can benefit from the many non-surgical treatments with offer to help them appear younger. These include Botox, a “liquid facelift” with dermal fillers, and skin tightening treatments including Profound, CO2RE and ThermiSmooth™ to maintain a youthful appearance.

When is Too Old to Get a Facelift?

There is no age limit for getting a facelift, as long as the patient is in good health. Top Detroit facelift surgeon Dr. Ali has performed many facelifts on women in their seventies and even some in their eighties! The suitability for facelift surgery depends on the individual’s overall health and skin condition rather than their age alone.

More mature patients in their 70s or 80s, may still be good candidates for facelift surgery if they are in good overall health and have realistic expectations. It’s important to consult with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali, who can assess the risks and benefits based on each patient’s specific circumstances.

Facelift in Your 40s

Getting a facelift in your 40s can be highly beneficial for individuals who are beginning to see the early signs of aging, such as sagging of the cheeks, jawline, and neck. At this age, the skin generally still retains a good degree of elasticity, so the procedure may be less invasive than is required for more mature patients.

In the hands of a top board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in the Detroit area, facelift results in one’s forties can be very natural-looking. And for many patients in their forties, a “mini facelift” is sufficient – which means smaller incisions and scars, less swelling, and a shorter recovery time.

The general “rule of thumb” for facelifts is that they can take 10 years off your appearance. So, women in their 40s can return to the appearance of their 30s with a facelift or mini facelift. A facelift in your 40s can help maintain a youthful appearance and potentially delay the need for more extensive procedures in the future.

Facelift in Your 50s

The 50s are a common decade for people to consider a facelift. By this age, most individuals start to experience more noticeable signs of aging, including deeper wrinkles, loss of volume, and more pronounced sagging.

Menopause begins around 50 for most women, and the decline in estrogen production can significantly impact the production of the collagen and elastin proteins that keep skin supple and elastic.

A facelift can dramatically rejuvenate the face by tightening loose skin and repositioning underlying tissues. Patients in their 50s will see dramatic improvements, restoring a more youthful and refreshed look, that can take ten or fifteen years off their appearance.

Facelift in Your 60s

Patients in their 60s are the most likely to undergo a full facelift, as this is the age at which the effects of aging typically become drastically more pronounced. Not only is skin elasticity in the face reduced, but the jowls and neck also generally show more extensive sagging, drooping and volume loss in one’s sixties.

Facelifts at this age are often combined with a neck lift, to effectively address these issues, lifting and tightening the skin and providing a significant rejuvenation.

Facelift in Your 70s & 80s

For those in their 70s, facelifts are absolutely still a viable option, provided they are in good overall health. The results can be quite transformative, helping to lift sagging skin and restore facial contours so that you look as young as you feel.

The key to a successful facelift in your 70s or 80s is realistic expectations and an experienced facelift surgeon like Dr. Ali in the Detroit area, who can tailor the procedure to the unique needs of more mature skin. As we age, we do heal more slowly, and our skin is thinner and more fragile – so it is crucial to seek the expertise of a skilled and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon for a facelift in your 70s or 80s.

Dr. Ali is one of Detroit’s best facelift surgeons, and he will offer you thorough medical evaluation to ensure you are a good candidate for surgery and to discuss the expected outcomes.

Facelift Surgeon’s Alternatives

For those seeking facial rejuvenation without surgery, we also offer several effective alternatives at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Detroit area, including Profound Skin Tightening and a “liquid facelift” using dermal fillers. Profound Skin Tightening is a minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production, resulting in tighter, smoother skin. This treatment is particularly effective for mild to moderate skin laxity.

A liquid facelift involves the strategic use of dermal fillers to restore volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. By targeting specific areas such as the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and jawline, this non-surgical approach can provide a refreshed and youthful appearance with minimal downtime. These alternatives offer substantial benefits and can be tailored to meet individual aesthetic goals under the expert guidance of a top Detroit facelift surgeon like Dr. Ali.

What is a Facelift?

Rhytidectomy -the medical name for facelift- a surgical means of improving the face and neck’s visible signs of aging. As the aging process continues, both the muscles and skin of the facial region are subject to a loss in tone. A facelift can help reverse this by re-draping the skin of the face and neck, removing deposits of fat, and tightening deeper facial structures. A facelift may be performed by itself, or in a combination with other cosmetic procedures such as a brow lift, neck lift, eyelid surgery, or liposuction.

Is a facelift procedure right for me?

Whether or not someone is a good facelift candidate will vary from person to person. Prior to every procedure, Troy, MI area board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali comprehensively evaluates each of his patients to determine whether facelift surgery is right for them. Once this is determined, Dr. Ali will educate the patient on all the specifics of their procedure and makes sure they are comfortable with their treatment plan. And for patients whom he determines are not right for the procedure, Dr. Ali will offer other treatments available that can help reach their specific aesthetic goals.

At AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area we also offer Profound Skin Tightening, CO2RE Wrinkle Reduction, Morpheus8 Microneedling, Exosome Treatments, “Liquid Facelifts”, Dermal Fillers, that can lift and tighten sagging skin, and reverse signs of aging.

What should I expect during a facelift consultation?

Board certified Troy, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali takes great care to make sure each facelift patient is sufficiently prepared for their procedure. This begins by conducting a consultation with the patient, during which the patient’s medical history and treatment goals will be extensively discussed. The patient’s facial features will also be analyzed, to help determine the best course of treatment.

During the consultation, patients will also receive in-depth answers to any questions they may have regarding their facelift. Based on this information, the patient can determine if they still feel a facelift is the best way to meet their aesthetic goals. Should the patient or the doctor determine this not to be the case, alternative methods of facial rejuvenation will be discussed.

Will a facelift make me look stretched?

No, as long as it performed by a skilled and highly experienced board certified plastic surgeon.

In the time during which the facelift was being perfected, plastic surgeons typically performed the procedure by pulling back the skin of the face, cutting away the remaining skin, and sewing up the incision. Since then, remarkable advancements have been made that rely on lifting and tightening facial muscles and restoring volume, rather than simply tightly pulling the skin. The end result is a much more natural appearance than the dramatic “stretched” look people often erroneously associate with early facelift procedures from several decades ago.

In sum, a skilled board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali can make a patient look years younger, by tightening skin in a natural looking manner.

Will a facelift also fix my sagging neck?

Facelift surgery is frequently combined with a neck lift, as long as the patient is an appropriate candidate. Neck lifts are most commonly performed to treat the appearance of a “turkey neck” – loose folds of skin beneath the chin. Neck lifts are also performed to restore the underlying muscle structures of the patient’s neck.

What kind of anesthesia is used for a facelift?

The anesthesia used in a facelift will depend on the specifics of the procedure being performed. Facelift patients have the option of either local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia (being “put under”), with the latter being the significantly more common choice.

During the consultation, board-certified Troy, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali will discuss all options regarding anesthesia. At AMAE Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ali’s surgical team employs an expert, board certified anesthesiologist, whose skills are put to use on a regular basis throughout every week.

How long does the facelift surgery last?

The time it takes to perform a facelift fluctuates from patient to patient, based on which exact procedure will best meet the patient’s desired outcome. On average, however, it takes 3 to 4 hours to perform facelift surgery.

The mid-facelift, a relatively simple procedure performed on the cheek/temple area, can generally be performed in roughly 2 hours. Conversely, a traditional facelift, as well as a neck lift or eye lift, can take up to 5 or 6 hours.

Where will My Facelift Be Performed?

How much time off should I arrange for my facelift?

Facelift patients who work at a desk or other sedentary jobs generally only need to recover for about two weeks before being presentable to return to work.

For some facelift patients, some swelling and bruising may still be visible after two weeks have passed. Generally, this won’t be noticeable to others, but any facelift patients concerned about such side effects should be completely in the clear after just one additional week.

More healing time may be required of facelift patients who work in a more physically strenuous field. Consult with Dr. Ali about how much downtime he recommends based on your employment.

How long will it take to fully recover from a facelift?

The rate at which it takes to heal from a facelift will be different for every patient. For the most part, younger patients will heal faster from their facelift than patients who are more mature. Regardless of age, most patients can expect to be able to resume to work and other normal activities after 2 weeks.

The entire facelift healing process can be broken down into a series of stages:

The first stage of facelift recovery will last roughly 10 days. This stage will see swelling continue to increase until the fourth day or so, then will begin to subside.

Between the 10th and 14th day after a facelift, the decrease in swelling and bruising is typically sufficient for the patient to feel comfortable returning to work and engaging in social activities.

The next stage of facelift recovery process will see the healing process continue until achieving final results. While this stage can last between 3 weeks and 6 months, 90% can see final results after 3 months.

For at least 4-6 weeks after surgery, patients should avoid engaging in strenuous activity such as intense physical exercise. Additionally, for the first several months of recovery, facelift patients should significantly limit their exposure to the sun.

Will I need someone to take me home or take care of me after a facelift?

It is Dr. Ali’s recommendation that in addition to being driven home from their procedure by someone else, facelift patients should have a friend or family member stay with the patient for at least the first several days after facelift surgery.

Patients who visit the Troy, MI area’s AMAE Plastic Surgery from out of town, as well as patients who prefer to recover from their facelift in a more luxurious environment, Dr. Ali can recommend a surgical aftercare facility, such as Pearl Recovery Retreat, staffed by skilled nurses trained to provide the utmost in surgical recovery care.

What technique is used for a facelift?

While board-certified Troy, MI plastic surgeon customizes each facelift surgery he performs to the unique goals and skin condition of the patient, the following outlines the “basics” used in many of the facelifts performed at AMAE Plastic Surgery:

The “classic facelift” is performed to treat skin that is loose or has begun to sag on the lower third of the face and neck. During a traditional facelift, Dr. Ali will make an incision behind and slightly in front of the ears. Then, the skin of the face will be lifted from the muscle and underlying tissue of the face. The skin will then be tightened, with excess skin being removed before closing the incision. After applying a bandage to the face, the facelift surgery is complete.

During the consultation, Dr. Ali explains to each patient the different type of lifts available, and makes a recommendation on which facelift procedure will best meet their needs and goals.

A mid facelift, on the other hand, is performed to simply treat the cheek and temple area of the face’s middle third. Similar to a facelift, a neck lift is performed to treat sagging skin in the neck-jawline area, separate from the skin of the upper face.

Will I have scars after my Facelift?

Any type of surgery that involves incisions necessarily results in some scarring. However, a skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali is a master at strategically placing incisions to conceal them.

People with longer hair can usually take advantage of it as a means of concealing their facelift surgery scars. Patients with shorter hair who wish to hide their scars may with to consider letting avoiding the salon or barber shop until they have healed completely.

How long will a Facelift last?

While age, gravity, and environmental factors will always continue to affect a person’s skin, a facelift is designed to last roughly ten years, putting the patient a decade behind the aging process.

Some patients do choose to undergo an additional facelift procedure once they start to see the results fade, but most patients feel that their initial procedure reversed the sands of time a satisfactory amount for one lifetime.

The Facelift Recovery Process: Planning Your Surgery

What is Facelift Recovery Like?

Facelifts remain among the most popular cosmetic surgeries.  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics for 2022, the most recent data available, there were 72,668 facelift surgeries performed in the United States.  The popularity of facelift surgery comes as no surprise, as almost everyone wants to look younger … especially in selfies, on social media, in dating app profile pics, and during Zoom meetings and video conferences.

But while we all want to look younger, one consideration surrounding facelift surgery is how long the recovery takes. After all we all have busy lives – and have to get back to work, parenting and other daily activities as soon as possible! And, like any type of surgery, a facelift does require so time to rest and heal. Knowing what to expect and how long it will take can help you plan and prepare – to make your facelift recovery easier, speedier and more comfortable.

In this article, top facelift surgeon Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI explains the facelift recovery process.

Facelift Recovery: Immediately After Surgery

Your sedation will wear off gradually after your surgery is complete. Some patients may feel cold and/or somewhat nauseated upon waking up in the recovery room, after face lift surgery. This is normal and nothing to cause concern. The patient’s face may also feel tight and tender as they awaken after the facelift surgery, as the anesthesia wears off.

Most patients spend a few hours in observation as they wake up. Typically facelift patients will be able to go home the same day. But you will need someone there to drive you home. In some cases of more extensive surgery a patient may stay overnight for observation at the hospital or surgical center.

In either case, patients usually have a bandage around the face to help minimize swelling and bruising – and may also have small drainage tubes. Before going home, Dr. Ali’s staff will give the patient specific instructions for facelift surgery recovery, including how to care for incision site(s) and drains. You will also be given a prescription for medication to control pain, that you only need to take if necessary.

Facelift Recovery: Dressings, Drains and Pain

After some facelift procedures the plastic surgeons may apply a large, fluffy dressing to reduce swelling. If used, the dressing will typically be replaced with an elastic wrap within a day or two.

Again, depending on the extensiveness of the facelift procedure, a patient may also have one to three drainage tubes. These reduce swelling by removing any excess blood and fluids. These drainage tubes may be left in place for one to several days. Patients will be instructed on care and removal of any drainage tubes.

There may be mild to moderate discomfort in the hours and days following your facelift. Dr. Ali will prescribe painkillers that are very effective at relieving any discomfort. As long as you take your medication as directed, the pain is very manageable and will subside in the next week or two at most. Dr. Ali will also typically prescribed antibiotics to prevent the risk of an infection after your facelift.

Patients must sleep with their head elevated for about two weeks following a facelift to help prevent swelling. They may sleep on two pillows, use a wedge-shaped foam pillow, or even sleep upright in a recliner – whatever is most comfortable for them, as long as the head is elevated above the heart.

Facelift Recovery: Resuming Activities

As a general rule, most patients are up and about pretty much “as normal” doing mild activities within a few days after a facelift. Generally patients can wash their hair after two days.

However, because bruising and swelling are normal parts of the healing process, patients won’t be able to see what their face will look like for a few weeks. The swelling may gradually increase over the first three days, but then the swelling will start to dissipate. As a result of the bruising and swelling, be prepared to look worse before you look better! But be patient. Soon you will look younger and better than ever.

Patients will usually be advised to walk around three or four times a day after their facelift, in order to boost circulation as well as help prevent the development of blood clots in the legs. Do not bend over, and do not lift heavy objects until your plastic surgeon tells you that you can!

Facelift Recovery: Things to Avoid

Patients are advised to avoid steam rooms, saunas, steam face masks, or anything that causes facial flushing. Patients must also avoid supplements containing niacin, niacinamide, or niacinamate.

Do not consume alcohol, aspirin, fish oil, or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen) until your plastic surgeon tells you that it is OK.

If your facelift was the kind that involved mouth incisions, your diet may also be restricted. Dr. Ali will advise you what you can eat, and when, if you have mouth incisions.

Facelift Recovery: Returning to Work

Most people can go back to work within two weeks of their facelift. This will depend on the extensiveness of the procedure as well as how strenuous their job is. Dr. Ali will advise you during your consultation when you should be able to go back to work.

Many people choose to cover the residual bruising with makeup when they are ready to venture out into the world again.

Within one to four months after your facelift it should be completely healed, and the final results will be fully visible. So if you are getting a facelift for an occasion such as a wedding or reunion, make sure to schedule it at least 4 months (or more) in advance.

Facelifts are a very common plastic surgery with very high satisfaction rates. But, it is important that patients are in good general physical and mental health in order to heal rapidly. Everybody heals differently and the patients age, overall health, and the extensiveness of the surgery will all effect healing and recovery time.  Smoking can delay or prevent proper healing and increase the risk of complications – so facelift patients should try to quit or abstain from smoking both leading up to, and after, facelift surgery.

Facelift Recovery: Other Activities

After facelift surgery, it is essential to give your body adequate time to heal and recover before resuming normal activities. Generally, patients can expect to return to light activities within one to two weeks following surgery, although this timeline may vary depending on the extent of the procedure and individual healing rates. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four to six weeks to prevent strain on the healing tissues.

Driving may be safely resumed once patients are no longer taking prescription pain medication and feel physically comfortable and alert behind the wheel, typically around one to two weeks post-surgery. Engaging in sexual activity may be gradually resumed after a few weeks, depending on the patient’s comfort level and their surgeon’s recommendations. Flying on a plane may, in some cases, be permissible after the initial two-week recovery period, although patients should consult with their plastic surgeon to ensure that they are medically cleared for air travel. If you do fly, be sure to take appropriate precautions, such as staying hydrated and moving around periodically during the flight, to reduce the risk of blood clots.

It is important to remember that each patient’s recovery experience may differ based on factors such as the extent of surgery, individual healing capacity, and any underlying medical conditions. Patients should closely follow their own plastic surgeon’s post-operative instructions and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth and successful recovery. By adhering to your surgeon’s guidance and allowing ample time for rest and recuperation, you can avoid complications, recover fully, and enjoy the long-lasting benefits of facelift surgery.

The Different Types of Facelift Procedures

Top Facelift Techniques

There are several different types of facelift procedures and techniques, offering different cosmetic results, and varying degrees of invasiveness, downtime and recovery.  Different types of facelifts target different areas of the face – and can have varying types and shapes of incisions, and different numbers of tissue layers treated.

In this article Birmingham, Michigan board certified plastic surgeon explains the different general types of facelift techniques. He will also offer you a consultation in our Birmingham office to understand your unique needs, answer your questions, and help you choose the type of facelift that is right for you.

The Deep Plane Facelift

The deep plane lift facelift is a “full” facelift that is recommended for people with severe facial sagging and laxity, and for those men and women desiring a longer-lasting facelift. Full, deep plane facelifts involve lifting and separating the skin from the “SMAS” layer below it and releasing and repositioning the muscles used for smiling, frowning, and other facial expressions.

Typically an incision is made along the hairline, from the hair-bearing temple area, the incisions are extended downward along natural creases, proceeding inside the ear, then along the ear lobe, and ending out of sight behind the ears. After the SMAS is repositioned, excess and loose skin is removed, and the edges are sutured or stapled in place.

The effects of a full facelift can last from 10 to 15 years, and sometimes longer. Because of the extensive nature of a full facelift, the recovery time is longer than other facelift procedures.

The SMAS Facelift

The SMAS facelift affects the superficial top layers of skin and the deeper tissues of the face and neck – and are ideal for men and women with mild laxity, some jowls and mid-face sagging due to aging. In an SMAS facelift, the plastic surgeon creates an incision at the temple, above the hairline, which extends downward, following the skin’s natural crease in front of the ear, below the ear lobe and then behind your ear.

The plastic surgeon then tightens the SMAS (the muscles used for smiling, frowning, and other facial expressions) using sutures. Any excess skin is then removed and the remaining skin is stitched up.

The SMAS lift differs from a deep plane lift in that no “attachments” underneath the SMAS are released during the process. Though not as long lasting as a full facelift, an SMAS Facelift comes with less recovery time.

Short Scar Facelifts

A “short scar facelift” is just a general term for several facelift techniques that require smaller scars. Short scar lifts, are good options for people in their 40s and 50s with minimal to moderate excess skin, or those who have no visible signs of aging on the neck.

S-shaped and MAC (minimal access cranial suspension) facelifts are both short scar facelifts. Unlike other types of facelifts, short scar facelift incisions do not extend behind the ear. However, the surgeon still re-suspends the tissues that supports the smile lines and jowls, and can tighten a moderate amount of loose skin.

Facelift + Neck Lift

With age, a number of changes take place in the neck, as well as the face, adding years to a person’s appearance. Some of these changes include excess fatty deposits, sagginess and drooping of the skin (jowls or “turkey neck”), and development of thick neck bands also known as platysma bands. Neck lift surgery is typically done in conjunction with a facelift, but can also be performed alone.

The main purpose of neck lift surgery is to enhance the definition of the jawline and smooth the neck. During the procedure, loose skin in the neck in tightened, excess fat is removed, and the stretched neck muscle is reduced. The procedure is performed by placing incisions under the chin and around the ears. When there is an abundance of extra skin in this area, it needs to be removed as part of the lift. Sometimes liposuction is necessary to remove the excess fat, which will be determined by you and Dr. Ali at the time of your consultation. The visible edges of the loose neck muscles are sutured together and tightened.

When performed by a skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali, neck lift surgery can take years off of your appearance!

Midface Facelift or Cheek Lift

The midface facelift or “cheek lift” targets only the middle third of the face. Midface facelifts can improve nose-to-mouth lines (“parentheses” or “puppet lines”) and can also be used to lift sagging cheeks.

Typically, an incision is placed in the hairline and the inside of the mouth. The cosmetic surgeon then lifts and repositions the natural fatty layer over your cheekbones. An isolated mid-facelift can be also sometimes be performed done through the lower eyelid when eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is done.

The midface facelift or “cheek lift” provides a more subtle freshening-up of the appearance, with minimal risk and less downtime than full facelifts or SMAS facelifts.

“Pseudo” Facelifts

“Endoscopic Facelift” (not recommended)

An endoscopic procedure that lifts the cheeks through small incisions is sometimes called an “endoscopic facelift”. And while this surgery is much less invasive, and has a much shorter recovery time, it is not a true facelift and is effective only for cheek sagging. Any skin or neck lifting cannot be done endoscopically. So “endoscopic facelifts” do not have the dramatic results, or the longevity, of full or SMAS facelifts.

If sagging cheeks are the only cosmetic issue you seek to treat, a top facelift surgeon like Dr. Ali can typically treat these issues non-surgically with autologous fat transfer, long lasting dermal fillers, and advanced new skin tightening technologies – without the need for incisions or anesthetic.

Lifestyle Lifts & Thread Lifts (not recommended)

Some men and women are still curious about facelift techniques they may have heard about in commercials – such as “Lifestyle Lift” or “Thread Lifts.” These trendy procedures are typically NOT performed by experienced and reputable plastic surgeons, like Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI.

While thread lifts are “fast and easy” with minimal downtime, these procedures have many limitations, often including poor results, and cosmetic benefits that do not last very long. A thread lift simply pulls skin up – which often looks unnatural. And the effects of a thread lift generally only last less than a year – while facelift benefits extend a decade or more.  You can read more about why Dr. Ali does NOT offer threads lift procedures in our article HERE.
