More Men Are Getting Plastic Surgery (Part 1)
For decades, the vast majority of cosmetic surgery patients were women. But the number of men who are now undergoing plastic surgery procedures is increasing every year. It is estimated that men now represent more than 10 percent of the total number of cosmetic surgery patients – which is triple the number of men undergoing plastic surgery in 1997.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of cosmetic surgeries performed on men prior to the pandemic was nearly a half million every year!
Birmingham board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali has been performing plastic surgery on male patients for more than 2 decades. In this article he discusses why more and more men in the Birmingham, MI area are turning to plastic surgery, and what procedures they are getting.
Why More Men Are Getting Plastic Surgery
In a June 2020 survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), almost one third of the men surveyed said that they were “extremely likely” to consider plastic surgery in the future. Almost 50% of the men said that they would consider plastic surgery to feel more confident. And 25% of respondents said that would consider plastic surgery to look younger so they could stay competitive in the workplace.
While grey hair and deep wrinkles and lines were once signs of wisdom and experience to be revered, it’s no secret that we now live in a very youth-oriented culture. More and more men are turning to cosmetic surgery to remain competitive in a world where they are constantly interacting with bosses, co-workers, clients, and even romantic partners who are younger than they are.
#1. Men’s Liposuction Plastic Surgery
Liposuction is the #1 most commonly requested men’s plastic surgery. “Lipo” is equally effective among female and male patients for permanently removing unwanted body fat, and sculpting lean, sexy, perfect proportions.
Where our bodies deposit fat is largely due to heredity. This is why diet and exercise are often simply not enough to get rid of unwanted fat in stubborn areas. And, as a man’s hormones (testosterone) declines with age, it can be even harder to get rid of unwanted body fat.
Women tend to develop fat deposits over the lower abdomen, hips and outer upper thighs (“saddle bags”), areas that are very difficult to eliminate with exercise. In men, leading areas of concern tend to be the abdomen, the chest and love handles, also referred to as the “spare tire.”
Liposuction surgery immediately and permanently removes fat from a man’s body, making it an extremely popular procedure among our male patients.
#2. Men’s Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction)
Gynecomastia is a medical condition in which men develop fatty breast tissue in the chest area. It is actually quite common. It is so common, in fact, that male breast reduction is the 2nd most performed men’s plastic surgery. Men are often embarrassed by this problem, but gynecomastia surgery (or male breast reduction) can successfully restore a flat, firm masculine appearance to the chest – with very little down time.
Gynecomastia may be present from birth, or it could develop later in life as a result of disease, a metabolic disorder, or as a result of natural aging. The condition can is characterized by an excess of fatty tissue and/or development of glandular tissue localized in the breast area. Gynecomastia can also develop in only one, or in both breasts.
Dr. Ali is a board-certified plastic surgeon who is regularly voted one of Detroit’s Top Doctors. He is one of the most renowned and talented gynecomastia surgeons in Michigan.
And, for men who have excess fat in the chest (without glandular breast tissue), he also offers both liposuction and non-surgical CoolSculpting male breast reduction. While these procedures are also permanent – keep in mind that only Gynecomastia Surgery can remove actual breast tissue that develops in men.
Men’s Facelift Surgery
Facelift surgery – to tighten skin, improve deep cheek folds, remove jowls, eliminate saggy skin around the neck, and make wrinkles disappear – is no longer just for women. Many men are realizing that they can reverse the signs of aging and take years off of their appearance with a man’s face lift.
There are many advanced techniques for performing a facelift depending upon the areas of concern. During the operation, loose skin is removed and the tissue around the facial muscles is tightened. Many times liposuction is also employed to get rid of excess fat, which may then be injected elsewhere in the face to fill hollow contours and restore facial youthfulness.
Our male patients love Dr. Ali’s facelift results because, under many circumstances, facial tissue can be repositioned without any external scars at all. In other cases, scarring is very small and fine and is hidden behind the ears – so no one will even know you’ve “had work done”! While a facelift is usually performed on men between the ages of 40-60, men in their 70s and even 80s who are in good health can also obtain excellent anti-aging benefits from a facelift as well!
