What are the different techniques used to perform labiaplasty?

While most GYN surgeons perform labiaplasty using a technique known as the Trim Method. This technique involves removing the inner labia’s outer edge in order to create an even appearance between the inner and outer labia. While many instances of labiaplasty are performed using the Trim Method every year, most plastic surgeons (including board certified Detroit Area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali) favor a different, safer method: The Wedge Technique.

The wedge technique is a newer alternative to trim labiaplasty and is used by Dr. Ali whenever medically possible. This method involves removing a V-shaped “wedge” from either side of the labia, with its remaining edges then being sutured together.

Labiaplasty performed with the Wedge Technique allows for smoother transitions at the clitoris, which in turn is less likely to impact sexual sensation.

Does labiaplasty require anesthetic?

Labiaplasty can be performed using either local anesthesia or with general anesthesia.

Does what effect does labiaplasty have on childbirth?

The process of childbirth is not influenced by labiaplasty whatsoever.

Labiaplasty also has no negative effect on conception. Our Detroit Area labiaplasty patients are free to attempt getting pregnant as soon as they can safely resume sexual intercourse.

How does labiaplasty affect sexual sensation?

When performed by expert, board certified Detroit Area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali, labiaplasty should neither negatively impact sexual sensation, nor should it result in scarring of the clitoris.

Of the many cosmetic procedures available in the United States, the one currently experiencing the most rapid growth is labiaplasty. Performed to reduce the length of the inner skin folds on either side of the vagina, labiaplasty allows for women to enjoy renewed confidence in their own self-image.

In this two-part article, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali answers more of his labiaplasty patients’ most frequently asked questions about this life changing procedure.

What is the labiaplasty recovery like?

For about two weeks or so after their procedure, labiaplasty patients usually experience soreness, bruising, and swelling to their genital area. While every woman’s individual recovery will be different, below is a general timeframe labiaplasty patients can expect for their recovery.

Work after Labiaplasty: For the most part, our Detroit Area patients are able to return to work as soon as a few days to a week after their labiaplasty surgery. One exception to this are patients whose job requires heavy lifting, which labiaplasty patients must avoid for 2 to 4 weeks after treatment.

Exercise after Labiaplasty: Unless expressly stated in their aftercare instructions, our Detroit Area labiaplasty patients must avoid any kind of strenuous exercise for a minimum of three weeks after treatment.

Sex  after Labiaplasty: Sexual intercourse must be avoided for three to four weeks, or more post-labiaplasty. You will have one or two follow appointments after your labiaplasty surgery, at which time Dr. Ali will tell you when you can resume intercourse

Showering after Labiaplasty: Labiaplasty patients are free to resume showering as soon as two days after their procedure (unless otherwise specified in their aftercare instructions.)

Driving after labiaplasty: Our Detroit Area labiaplasty patients may begin driving again as soon as they feel well enough to do so.

Does labiaplasty cause scarring?

When performed by an expert professional, such as board certified Detroit Area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali, labiaplasty will not leave the patient with any external scarring. This is accomplished by making incisions only in areas that will fold naturally into the skin’s creases.

However, the anatomical structure of some individual treatment areas have, in the past, resulted in some minor scarring. Should this occur, there is no cause for alarm, as such scarring typically disappears within a year or less.

Will the sutures need to be removed after labiaplasty?

At AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Detroit Area, most of the cases of labiaplasty we perform use absorbable sutures. This means they do not need to be removed.

When can I go back to work after labiaplasty?

Depending on what their job entails, our Detroit Area labiaplasty patients can usually return to work 2-3 days after their procedure.

Detroit Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Ali, Discusses the Increasing Popularity of Labiaplasty

Detroit, MI – From a young age, women are told that they should love every bit of themselves, including their most intimate of parts. Yet many women feel self-conscious about the appearance of their vaginas, or more specifically their labia. Labiaplasty, which reduces the appearance of the labia minora while rejuvenating the area, has increased by 39% in the last year alone according to the ASPS. That represents about 12,000 labiaplasty procedures since 2015.

Detroit-based plastic surgeon, Dr. M. Azhar Ali, has seen a strong upsurge in women requesting the labiaplasty procedure, especially those considering “mommy makeovers.”

“As plastic and cosmetic surgery becomes more mainstream and accepted, many women feel more comfortable discussing all areas of their body where they may not feel as confident. We used to see patients every seven or ten years for major procedures. Lately, however, I see some of my patients on an ongoing basis as they seek to rejuvenate various areas of their body, and Labiaplasty is a procedure that is being opted for in record numbers.”

What Does Labiaplasty Consist Of?

Labiaplasty (labial reduction) is a cosmetic surgery procedure for women who are unhappy with the size of their labia minora (inner lips). Women with larger labia minora frequently experience irritation, discomfort during exercise and personal hygiene problems. Some women even experience problems with sexual intercourse.

Even if a woman doesn’t experience any of the above problems, her oversized labia can still become a source of embarrassment when faced with the prospect of introducing her parts to a new sexual partner. Then there comes with the embarrassment of having the labia show when wearing snug shorts or swimsuits.

What Causes Enlarged Labia?

For many women, enlarged labia occurs at birth as a result of genetics. For others, the labia grows as the woman gets older. Childbirth can be another factor that contributes to prominent labia.

Whatever the reasons, labiaplasty can allow women to feel good about their intimate parts once more. The procedure makes the labia minora appear flush or even with the labia majora so that they’re more hidden. The woman can wear what she wants, exercise with complete abandon and feel good that she looks her best when becoming intimate between the sheets.

Important Factors to Consider

According to Dr. Ali, women who come to see him for labiaplasty wonder if they are allowed to choose the size of their labia. In cases like these, Dr. Ali states that proper education is extremely important.

“During the initial consultation, I do my best to educate the patient about the procedure and the various options available. For labiaplasty, it is important to recognize not only the appearance of the labia but also the function. The labia protects the vaginal orifice when the thighs are spread, so it is important not to go too small when choosing the proper resizing of the labia minora,” Dr. Ali said.

Healing and Downtime

Depending upon the patient’s comfort level the surgery could be performed in the office under local anesthesia. Labiaplasty requires minimal downtime, with most patients returning to their daily routines within a week. Still, Dr. Ali recommends that women exercise caution when returning to their normal, busy lives. Strenuous activity and sexual intercourse should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

While healing, the woman will be required to wear a pad similar to one worn during menstruation and some bed rest may be required. There may also be some bleeding and bruising, but those symptoms typically only last a few days.

“Labiaplasty and mommy makeovers, which seeks to restore women’s pre-pregnancy bodies, are becoming increasingly popular as women continue to feel more empowered and realize that they don’t have to live with any parts of themselves they may dislike,” Dr. Ali said.

What to Expect Post-Surgery

During this time, you should also engage in an “on and off” application of cold compresses, which will reduce swelling.

You may experience some bleeding and bruising in the surgical area, but these will disappear within a few days.

When Can You Get Back to Living Life?

With your renewed sense of confidence, you should be able to return to your regular routine after a week. However, don’t go running any marathons or hit the weight room just yet.

You should refrain from engaging in strenuous activity (that includes sexual intercourse) for at least six weeks.

After the six weeks recovery period is up, and as with any surgery, try easing back into your usual activity and sex routine so that you don’t set your recovery back just in case your body takes longer to bounce back post-surgery.

Your plastic surgeon will give you explicit instructions on how to care for your dressing at home and when to return to life’s activities. Listen to these instructions and follow them with careful attention and you should be back to your usual self in no time.

“We’re seeing an increase in women seeking out plastic surgery to reduce their enlarged labia,” says Dr. Ali, a Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon. “Some women may experience discomfort throughout their daily lives, and some embarrassment in the bedroom, due to the size of their labia. But a labiaplasty is a great way to help them gain back confidence, and enjoy life both in and out of the bedroom.”

A labiaplasty, also referred to as vaginal rejuvenation, reduces the size of the labia minora so that is will be flush or hidden within the outer lips of the vagina, knowns as the labia majora.

The type of labiaplasty procedure performed will depend on the patient’s preferences. Some women have a labia that is darker in color and want a reduction that can also correct the color. In this case, a labial flap reduction can provide a lighter, more youthful looking labia.

Some women want to keep the darker color on the margins of the labia, while reducing the size. For these patients, Dr. Ali performs a reduction procedure that provides the ideal reduction in size, while preserving the color.

Dr. Ali typically performs the procedure under general anesthesia, and it takes about one hour. Patients can go home the same day. Patients should remain on bed rest for one week following the procedure. There can be significant swelling for the first week, but it should begin to go away by the second week. Patients will wear a dressing similar to a pad worn during menstruation, and can apply cool compresses to help reduce swelling. There may also be slight bleeding and bruising.

Daily activities can be resumed after one week, but taking care not to strain themselves. Strenuous activity, including sexual intercourse, should be avoided for four to six weeks.
