What You Need to Know About Nose Job Surgery

What You Need to Know About Nose Job Surgery

A nose job – medically called rhinoplasty – is a common and safe surgery performed by a board certified plastic surgeon to alter the size or shape of the nose, or to improve its function.

Board certified Macomb County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali has performed rhinoplasty on hundreds of women and men with outstanding results. In this article Dr. Ali explains rhinoplasty surgery from start to finish – and breaks down everything you’ve ever wanted to know about a nose job.

What is a Nose Job?

If you are thinking about a permanent way to transform the shape, size, or appearance of your nose, you have plenty of company. In fact, according to a 2017 report issued by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, rhinoplasty is the third most popular cosmetic surgery, with over 200,000 recipients. Nose jobs can be for medical reasons, such as to correct breathing problems related to the nose or to correct disfigurement that results from birth defects or birth trauma. Or, nose jobs can be performed purely for cosmetic reasons.

Who Might Benefit from a Nose Job?

There are several conditions that might prompt someone to consider a nose job, such as:

  • The presence of a dorsal hump: A bump at the bridge of the nose
  • The width of the nose: A nose that is either too wide or too narrow
  • Asymmetry: A nose that is twisted or deviated
  • Prominent nasal tip: A nasal tip that is not in proportion to the rest of the face, that may be rounded or bulbous in appearance.
  • “Drooping” nasal tip: The end of the nose dips so that the angle between the upper lip and the end of the nose is less than 90 degrees
  • Post-traumatic deformities: The shape of the nose was altered after injury, such as a broken nose
  • Nasal airway issues: Internal valve collapse or deviated septum

The ideal rhinoplasty patient will be someone who has generally stopped growing (usually 15 years of age or older), who is emotionally mature enough to understand the implications, risks and purpose of the surgery, and who has realistic expectations of what rhinoplasty can (and can’t) do. You should be in good general health, and ideally, a nonsmoker (or willing and able to give up smoking for a period of time prior to and after the surgery).

Is a Nose Job Right for Me?

Rhinoplasty is major surgery. With any major surgery, there are risks that need to be balanced out against the benefits. Your initial consultation with Dr. Ali will include a discussion of your general health history, exactly what methods he recommends for your surgery, the potential risks associated with nose jobs and surgery in general, and what you can expect in terms of results. He will also let you know what the recovery time will likely be, and the overall costs involved.

The time spent in the initial consultation is extremely valuable to Dr. Ali in terms of getting to know you, your health history, and your goals. It is equally important to you, so that you can fully understand the process, risks, advantages and limitations of a nose job.

Will Insurance Cover My Nose Job?

Insurance may or may not cover your nose job. surgery. Some nose jobs will be covered, or partially covered, by insurance. Some will not. Generally, if you are getting a nose job simply for cosmetic reasons, insurance will decline coverage. It is a good idea to contact your insurance carrier well in advance of the surgery so you know what is covered and what you will need to pay for out of pocket.

CoolSculpting Birmingham MI

What’s Better, CoolSculpting or Liposuction?

CoolSculpting vs. Liposuction

CoolSculpting and Liposuction are two of Dr. Ali’s most popular – yet very different – fat loss treatments. Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women and men in Birmingham, West Bloomfield & Oakland County get the body they want using these procedures.

In this article we discuss differences between Liposuction & CoolSculpting – to help you begin deciding which procedure is right for you.

Remember you are unique! What is the best fat loss procedure for one person may not be right for someone else. The best way to decide on your ideal fat loss treatment is a consultation with Dr. Ali. He will evaluate your situation and provide detailed answers to your questions, so that you can chose the best fat loss treatment plan for your goals.

CoolSculpting Procedure

CoolSculpting and Liposuction both remove stubborn areas of fat that resist diet and exercise.  However, neither Liposuction nor CoolSculpting are weight loss tools for obesity and they do not remedy flabby or loose abdominal skin or muscles.

However, CoolSculpting is non-surgical and non-invasive. This means that there is no incision and no need for anesthetic. This also means that there no “downtime” and you can resume normal activities immediately after the treatment. In fact many people go back to work the same day!

CoolSculpting typically involves more than one treatment – while Liposuction is generally done in a single treatment.

The CoolSculpting process “freezes” the fat to kill the fat cells. The body then gradually and naturally eliminates the dead fat cells.

Because it takes time for the body to eliminate the dead fat cells, with CoolSculpting you will begin to see results after 2 to 4 weeks. And it may take 2 months for more dramatic results, and up to 3 to 5 months to deliver complete and final results. Full results will eventually reduce the area treated by 20 to 25%.

Liposuction Procedure

Unlike non-invasive CoolSculpting, Liposuction is a surgical technique that removes the excess fat deposits located between the skin and muscle.

In most cases Liposuction is performed under local anesthesia.  A very small (less than 3mm) incision is made inLiposuction – but typically there are no stitches and no (or unnoticeable) scars.

While CoolSculpting waits for the body to eliminate the fat cells, Liposuction actually suctions the fat cells out at the time of the procedure. This means only one treatment is typically needed.

The patient can go home within a half hour after the procedure, however there is some downtime with Liposuction. The recovery time for Liposuction is from 2 to 7 days before normal activity can be resumed. And mild pain (treatable with medication) or discomfort gradually subsides over a period of 2 weeks up to 8 weeks.

Once the swelling goes down in 4 to 6 weeks, the Liposuction results are visible “immediately”. This is because the fat has been surgically “sucked out” and there is no need to wait for the body to eliminate it.

In summary, CoolSculpting is less invasive, less uncomfortable, and has less downtime than Liposuction. But CoolSculpting usually requires more treatments than Lipo, and CoolSculpting results take more treatments and the results take longer to be visible.

Best CoolSculpting in Birmingham, West Bloomfield & Oakland County

The best way to determine which fat loss treatment is best for you is to discuss your goals with a board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali who offers both procedures. Dr. Ali will assess your skin, muscles, body, lifestyle and goals to help you chose the best treatment for your individual needs.

As an aside, it is wise to be very wary of doctors or clinic that only offer one type of fat loss procedure. They may try to steer or pressure you into the procedure they offer – even if another procedure would be better for you. Only a surgeon like Dr. Ali who offers multiple treatment options can give you the array of choices you need to find what’s best for your fat loss goals.

Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women and men across Birmingham, West Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills & Oakland County get the body they want with CoolSculpting and Liposuction. He will be happy to offer you a consultation to help you understand your options and decide if CoolSculpting or Lipo is right for you.

stop bladder leaks

How to Stop Bladder Leaks (Part 1)

How to Stop Bladder Leaks (Part 1)

Research has shown that more than half of people who experience bladder leaks (“urinary incontinence”) don’t discuss the condition with their health care provider. But there is really no need to feel embarrassed, since 1 in every 3 women experience bladder leakage when they laugh, sneeze, cough or workout.

Bladder leakage, or urinary incontinence, affects both women and men of all ages – although it becomes more common as we get older. The good news is that there are new treatments that can minimize or eliminate bladder leaks without surgery – sometimes with just one treatment.

What Causes Bladder Leaks?

There are two main types of urinary incontinence stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Knowing which type you have can help you and your doctor determine the best treatment.

  • Stress Incontinence Bladder Leaks

If you have stress incontinence, activities that raise the pressure inside your abdomen cause urine to leak through the muscle in your bladder that normally holds it in. With stress incontinence, coughing, sneezing, laughing, running, exercising jumping and lifting heavy objects is often responsible for a urine leak.

Childbirth, smoking, age or being overweight raises the risk of stress incontinence in women. Stress incontinence is much more rare in men and is often due to prostate cancer treatment, such as radiation or surgery.

  • Urge Incontinence Bladder Leaks

Urge Incontinence – also called overactive bladder – is a medical condition in which the brain, spinal cord and bladder don’t work together properly to hold and release urine at the right time. The bladder may suddenly empty, or a person may feel the need to urinate frequently.

Diseases that affect the nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis or stroke, can cause urge incontinence in men and women. In men, an enlarged prostate may be the cause. However, in many cases, doctors can’t identify what causes urge incontinence.

It is also possible to have both types of incontinence at the same time. Fortunately, the majority of both types of urinary incontinence can either be cured or significantly improved.

Home Remedies for Bladder Leaks

There are some steps you can take at home to cut down on bladder leaks.

Avoiding certain foods, drinks and ingredients can help reduce bladder leaks, including:
·Alcohol
·Artificial sweeteners
·Caffeine
·Carbonated beverages
·Chocolate
·Citrus fruits and tomatoes
·Corn syrup
·Honey
·Spicy foods

Overweight and obese women who lose weight also report fewer episodes of bladder leakage. But we all know that weight loss is much easier said than done.

Certain exercises can help control your bladder to some extent, including “Kegel” exercises in which you tighten pelvic muscles to strengthen them.

While these “home remedies”can help to some extent with frustrating bladder leakage, they can be an inconvenience and often are difficult to “follow through” with.

Fortunately, state-of-the-art medical treatments now make it very ease to treat leaking bladders – without surgery! In PART 2 of this article we discuss these new and exciting non-surgical treatments for urinary incontinence!

How Geneveve Vaginal Rejuvenation Works

Most women experience some vaginal changes as a result of pregnancy and childbirth, weigth gain, hormonal changes, menopause and aging. All of these factors can lead to a loss of collagen, causing the vagina to lose its strength and structure. In as many as 40% of women this looseness of the vaginal canal results in a loss of sexual pleasure – as well as loss of confidence in intimate situations.

Thanks to state-of-the-art radiofrequency technology, modern vaginal rejuvenation procedures can rebuild and renew this weakened collagen- restoring sexual health and wellbeing without surgery.

How Geneveve Vaginal Rejuvenation Works

Most women don’t talk about this extremely personal problem – and many wrongly assume that they must just learn to live with it.  But new, non-surgical Geneve treatments can actually remedy this problem with a single 30 minute procedure in our Birmingham, MI medical office.

The Geneveve procedure applies heat to targeted areas of the vagina using radiofrequency. A small probe is inserted inside the vagina to deliver gentle pulses of energy that stimulate collagen production – virtually “remodelling” the vagina. The treatment also includes a cooling process that ensures the application is comfortable and painless.

The body’s own collagen then strengthens and thickens the vaginal tissue. As a result, the vagina feels tighter, improving sexual sensation as well as decreasing vaginal dryness and irritation. As an added bonus, Geneveve Vaginal Tightening also decreases any bladder leakage resulting from vaginal tissue weakeness.

What to Expect after Geneveve Vaginal Tightening

Only one 30 minute Geneve treatment is needed for most women. It is performed in the comfort of our discreet, state-of-the-art Birmingham, MI medical office under the supervision of renowned Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ali.

You will begin to notice vaginal improvement within the first few weeks after treatment. As your body’s collagen production increases, your results will continue to improve over time. Within 6 to 9 weeks most women experience maximum improvement in vaginal sensitivity, tightness and bladder control.

  •  40% of women experience vaginal looseness that causes loss of sexual sensation.

  • 1 in 3 women experience bladder leakage when they laugh, sneeze, or workout.
