Choosing the Right Breast Implants: FAQs

Choosing the Right Breast Implants: FAQs

In this article Troy, MI area double board certified breast implant surgeon Dr. Ali answers some commonly asked questions about choosing breast implants.

How do I know if I should have my implants placed over or under the muscle?

Generally, you should choose submuscular (under the muscle) breast implant placement if you have saline implants, a smaller amount of natural breast tissue, or a strong family history of breast cancer.

Typically, you should choose subglandular (over the muscle) breast implant placement if you want silicone implants, have a larger amount of natural tissue, or require a breast lift.

How do I know if I need a breast lift?

Dr. Ali will offer you a consultation to determine if you will also need a breast lift at the time of your implants. However, one way to get an idea if you need a breast lift is to stand in front of a mirror and look at your nipples in relation to the natural crease beneath your breasts.

If your nipples sit lower than your breast crease, adding breast implants without a breast lift to remove excess skin will generally make them more saggy – so you will probably need a breast lift.

Should I get round or teardrop-shaped implants?

Dr. Ali will offer you a consultation to help you determine which shape of breast implants are best for you. However, generally, round implants are the most commonly used implants. Round implants are totally symmetric so that their “orientation” (placement location) is always even and symmetric. Round implants are also less expensive than teardrop implants.

Anatomic or teardrop implants, on the other hand, are not symmetrical, with a greater projection at the bottom of the implants than at the top. So in some women, they may have a tendency to rotate causing problems.

Additionally, keep their rounded shape making them look somewhat more natural when you are lying down.

Will I get more cleavage from a breast implants?

Yes, breast implants can give you more cleavage. However, it’s important to that increasing the size of your breasts is not what gives you cleavage. Cleavage is a result of the width of your chest and how close your breasts are together – not how big they are.

If your breasts are set wide on your chest, you will have more fullness after your implants, but not more cleavage. On the other hand, if your body is narrow below your shoulders and your breast implants are placed close together, you can achieve greater cleavage even with a small implant.

What cup size should I choose?

Women tend to think of breasts in terms of cup sizes, because that is how we buy our bras. But cup size is a very subjective measurement: everyone wears their bras differently and every bra manufacturer makes them differently. A woman may be a 36C in one bra and a 34D in another.

Breast implant sizes are actually measured in cc’s. Implants range from 120 to 960 cc, with 300 to 400 cc being the most common range. Implants also differ according to their height and diameter.

Your breast implant size should be proportionate to your body in both size (number of cc’s), projection (height) and width. For example, a 200cc implant may look large enough on a petite woman with a narrow chest, while it would look small on a tall woman with a wider chest area.

Dr. Ali will work closely with you during your consultation to determine the most appropriate implant size for you.

Choosing Breast Implants: Shape is More Important Than Size

Breast Implants: Why Shape Is More Important Than Size  –

Breast augmentation surgery, is one of the top plastic surgery operations performed. One of the biggest decisions faced by women considering breast augmentation surgery is what size is right for you.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali has performed several hundred breast implant surgeries, and is an expert at helping his Troy, MI area patients choose the most beautiful breasts for their body. In this article he’ll discuss how to go about making that important choice.

Don’t Think of Breast Implants in Terms of Bra Size

Speaking about specific cup sizes is not a good way to describe a patient’s desired size in the most general of terms. To  begin with, all bra manufacturers are different. Victoria’s Secret, for example, tends to run small, so you’d wear a larger cup size at Victoria’s Secret than at Lane Bryant. As there is no standardization of sizes in the bra industry, you could very well be a 36C in one style and a 34D in another.

A more accurate measurement of your breast size is to measure them in cc’s. The most commonly selected breast implant size ranges somewhere within  300 to 400cc, although breast implants can range anywhere from 120cc to 960cc. Your ideal size will be determined by the shape of your frame and body type. What appears large on a petit woman might look comparatively small on a taller woman.

The amount of breast tissue you began with prior to your breast augmentation surgery will also factor into your implant size. Dr. Ali will work closely with you to help you determine what size implant is right for you.

Shape is More Important than Size in Breast Implants

The most important thing to concern yourself with is overall shape. Generally, women desire a full look that is still proportionate to their body. In order to achieve this, your frame size, height, and weight must all be taken into consideration. There are many choices when it comes to breast implant shape. in addition to choosing between round and teardrop shaped implants, you will need to select the “projection” of the implant from your body.

During the consultation process, our patients are given a bra to wear within which we place a series of implants of varying shape and size. This helps you visualize what you’ll look like following your breast implant surgery, and aids in Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ali determine how best to meet your needs.

Bigger Isn’t Necessarily Better in Breast Implants

While bigger breast implants are the right option for some women, there are numerous considerations all patients should consider prior to their breast augmentation surgery. Larger implants can be somewhat more obvious, and will also be heavier than a smaller implant. If you’re a particularly athletic person, smaller implants may be a better fit for your lifestyle.

But be sure to make a choice that feels right for you and makes you as comfortable in your own skin as possible.

6 Steps to Maintaining Beautiful Breast Implants

6 Steps to Maintaining Beautiful Breast Implants

If you’ve recently gotten beautiful full, shapely breasts through breast implant surgery, there are some important steps you can take to ensure your breast implants bring you years of enjoyment without complications.

In this article, Troy, MI area board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali shares 6 tips for keeping your breasts looking their best long after your breast augmentation surgery.

Take Time to Recover after Getting Breast Implants

Thanks to modern advancements in surgical techniques, many women only require a few days off from work or other activities after implant surgery. But while the recovery period is much shorter than it once was, your breasts still need time to heal on the inside and the outside.

Taking care of your implants by following your surgeons post-op instructions is essential to allowing your breast to heal properly and “drop” into place without complications such as infection, rotation and other problems.

Ease Back into Exercise after Getting Breast Implants

Even if you feel great – take things slowly as you return to exercise and other strenuous activities. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least a month post-surgery. While you can resume mild exercise about a week after surgery (follow your doctor’s instruction) you’ll want to take things very slowly.

Start simply and work up – walking before running; and replacing high impact activities with low impact exercises.  Avoid heavy lifting, including weights or weight machines, until your doctor specifically tells you it is “safe” and you are not in danger of tearing stitches.

Wear Proper Breast Support after Getting Breast Implants

Gravity still affects breast implants – though not to the same extent as it affects natural breast tissue. So if you have got implants, you need a great, supportive bra.

Remember, while the implants themselves will always keep their shape, your skin, muscles and tissue must support the weight of the breast implants. So you need to limit the impact that gravity has on your body to prevent premature sagging of your breasts – especially when exercising or running!

Most breast implant surgeons recommend that you wear a bra as often much as you can – even when sleeping at night, to protect the breasts from excessive bouncing and movement.

Moisturize after Getting Breast Implants

As we just discussed, your skin still needs to support those beautiful new implants! Regularly applying skin lotion to your breasts will moisturizing and nourish the skin – so it retains its tone and elasticity.

Choose a high quality moisturizer, such as one with natural skin nourishing elements such as botanicals, and use it every day.  Avoiding sun, as well as wearing ample high SPF sunscreen can also keep your skin young and health, so it continues to Keep Your Weigh Steady after Getting Breast Implants

We know maintaining a stable weight over the years is more easily said than done. And those extra pounds can creep on in spite of trying to maintain healthy eating habits and regular exercise.

But substantial changes in your weight can cause the skin and breast tissue to sag. Even pregnancy weight gain can take their toll on breast implants. Too much weight gain or loss can result in the need for a breast lift to restore the implants to their original “perky” position. support your new, bigger breasts.

Get Mammograms after Getting Breast Implants

Getting regular mammograms is still important after getting breast implants. Mammograms are necessary for early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer in every women, including those with breast implants.

Always let the imaging center know you have implants when you schedule your mammogram appointment. S facilities even have technicians who are specially trained in mammograms for breast implant patients.

Protecting Your Breast Implants After Reconstruction

Protecting Your Breast Implants After Reconstruction

If you have survived breast cancer and a mastectomy, and have undergone breast reconstruction surgery, you have already been through so much! You are a warrior! So, of course, you want to do everything possible to protect your new breasts – and ensure that you do not have to undergo any further breast revision surgery.

In December, a new clinical study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons reported that two huge risk factors –  smoking and obesity – can dramatically increase the odds of early implant loss after breast reconstruction with implants following a mastectomy.

The study was conducted at the Perelman School of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. The stated goal of the study was figure out which patients are at greatest risk for complications within the first 30 days after breast reconstruction.

In order to determine which risk factors were associated with 30-day breast implant loss for any reason data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program was analyzed. The study included more than 14,500 women between the ages of 40 and 60 who had undergone immediate breast reconstruction with implants after a mastectomy.

The results of the study were starling:

Smoking was shown to increase woman’s risk of early implant loss by three times!

And obesity as shown to increase woman’s risk of early implant loss by three times! Additionally, the more severe the state of obesity, the higher the patient’s risk of losing the implant was.

Other Risk Factors for Breast Implant Loss

Other lesser factors that were associated with a greater chance of complications included age, with women over age 55 being at slightly greater risk for implant failure. Additionally, direct-to-implant reconstruction – undergoing mastectomy and implants in a single procedure –  also increased the risk of implant failure within the first 30 days after breast reconstruction surgery.

Less than one percent of all patients in this study of 14,583 women (so about 14) experienced complication involving implant loss in 30 days or less.  Patients in to lower risk groups only had a, failure rate of .39% . But patients in the high risk group – due to smoking or obesity – had a failure rate of  3.86%.

This is actually quite a substantial difference – because it means that one in 25 patients in the high-risk group will lose a breast implant within the first 30 days.

The takeaway from this is that while smoking and obesity have a variety of negative health consequences, their impact on breast reconstruction surgery can be dire. We understand that losing weight or quitting smoking is a difficult uphill battle. But in order to ensure that your reconstruction surgery is a success, we urge you to find the support that you need so that you can give up cigarettes or lose some of the extra weight.
