How to Choose Your Breast Implant Size

Which Breast Implant Size is Right for Me?

Once you have chosen your breast implant material (saline vs. silicone) it’s time to choose the shape and size of the breast implants that will look best on you and achieve your appearance goals! In this article board certified Detroit area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali offer information and tips for choosing the breast implant size that’s best for you.

Remember, when it comes to breast augmentation, there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all breast implants. Depending on a variety of factors including heredity, pregnancies, your body shape and proportions, your height and weight, your natural contours, and your lifestyle and aesthetic desires, breast implants must be individually chosen to match each woman and meet her appearance goals.

“Choosing your implant size is a very personal decision,” says board-certified Detroit area plastic surgeon, Dr. Ali. “It is important to first identify your perfect outcome, and then communicate it to your plastic surgeon the best you can.”

In addition to determining the size or “volume” of the breast implant that will look best on your body, the profile, or projection is an important consideration. The “projection” is height of the top of the breast implant from your chest – in other words how far it stands outward from the chest wall.

Don’t Obsess Over Breast Implant Cup Size

“Too many times, patients worry more about cup size and less about the way their new breasts will look and feel,” explains Dr. Ali. “Since cup sizes vary wildly among undergarment manufacturers, they aren’t a good guideline when deciding what size breast implants to get.”

Additionally, a “D cup” may look huge on a woman with a petite bone structure, but may not look big enough on a taller woman with a broader chest area. In stead of measuring breast implant volume by inexact cup size, implant manufacturers measure them using precise cubic centimeters or “CCs”. Breast implants can vary greatly in volume – from as little as 80CCs to as much as 800CCs.

But instead of focusing on a number, patients should focus on of the overall look they want.  You can do this at home with the rice test – or if you are in the greater Detroit area you can come into AMAE Plastic Surgery for Vectra 3d imaging. Vectra 3d is a revolutionary digital imaging system that provides a three-dimensional computerized image of your body with different breast sizes from every angle. This enables you to compare your breast implant options – and see the expected outcomes before your breast implant surgery.

Breast Implant Rice Test

Some people may want to try out different sizes at home before they commit to a breast implant consultation. The “rice test” can give you a rough idea of what breast implants will look and feel like. This fast and simple method lets you see what you may look like with different-size implants – however it is not exact like Vectra 3D imaging at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Detroit area.

Here are the steps for the breast implant rice test:

  • Cut off the feet from pantyhose and discard.
  • The new ends will become the mock “breasts,” so place the shortened stocking around your neck, adjusting it to the right length so each end reaches to your ideal breast height.
  • Tie the end of each foot.
  • Add dry (uncooked!) long-grain rice to each end of the stockings.
  • Wear the stockings around your neck.
  • Experiment with different fullness in the stockings
  • Wear the makeshift rice “breasts”  under different types of clothing (loose, tight, etc.).
  • Ad or remove rice and adjust the shape, until you get the size you like.
  • Once you have the general size you like, remove the rice separately from each stocking and measure how much rice you thought was ideal for each breast.

A basic guideline for how much rice equals a breast implant is as follows:

  • 60 cubic centimeters (cc) breast implant = ¼ cup;
  • 120 cubic centimeters (cc) breast implant= ½ cup;
  • 175 cubic centimeters (cc) breast implant= ¾ cup;
  • 225 cubic centimeters (cc) breast implant = 1 cup;
  • 345 cubic centimeters (cc) breast implant = 1.5 cup;
  • 450 cubic centimeters (cc) breast implant = 2 cups;

Breast implants typically increase in increments of 10cc or more commonly by 25 cc. When you visit top Detroit area implant surgeon Dr. Ali, he will typically start by placing a 100 cc breast implant in your bra, then move to 125 cc, and possibly 150 cc, etc. to help you decide which implant size will achieve the exact look that you desire. Then he can also move on the Vectra 3d imaging to refine the size, shape, location and profile (projection) of the breast implants that will look best on you.

Consider These Breast Implant Factors

Keep in mind that your own unique body should determine what size implants you get. Some factors to take into consideration when choosing breast implant size are:

  • Existing breast tissue: Have you always naturally had small breasts due to heredity or exercise? If so, you’ll want a different size implant than a mother whose breasts have lost volume after pregnancy, leaving her with excess sagging skin or breast tissue.
  • Skin elasticity or tightness: Are you prone to stretch marks? Is your skin naturally resilient? The type of skin you have should also be part of your decision-making process, as breast augmentation will cause skin to stretch. Going “too big” for the amount and elasticity of the skin you have can cause issues down the road.
  • Weight: Have you had significant changes in your weight? Whether due to lifestyle, genetics, disease, pregnancy, or any other cause, weight fluctuations can affect how your body will look with the new implants.
  • Height and Frame: Keep in mind that the same size of implant will look completely different on women with different “frames” – including height, chest width and bone structure. 100cc breast implants may look large on a very petite women, but bee too small for a larger patient. Remember, it’s more about “proportion” than size when selecting the most attractive breast implants. If you stray too much from your body frame, you may end up with an unnatural look or one that causes back strain down the line.
  • Desired outcome: Do you want larger breasts, or are you simply looking to balance out an issue with asymmetry? Do you want or need more lift and volume? These are items to discuss with your breast implant surgeon, as well.
  • Lifestyle: Are you an avid runner, weight lifter, cycler or dancer? Very large breasts can be uncomfortable for certain active lifestyles.
  • Your Natural Anatomy: Each woman has her own natural anatomy and contours, developed over time. And her own unique appearance preferences. Therefore, it is up to YOU to decide what overall implant size and shape is ideal for you. A partner, family members, or a friend who is curvier or thinner than you, may all have different ideas. But remember you are doing this for YOU, and nor someone else, so that you love your new body!

Why Choose “MemoryShape”® Silicone Breast Implants

MemoryShape® Breast Implants for Natural Looking Results

At AMAE Plastic Surgery, top Detroit area breast implant surgeon Dr. Ali understands that choosing the size, shape and material of your breast implants is a big decision. This is your opportunity to get the body you have always wanted – so we will take the time to help you understand your options and make the breast implant choices that will ensure you love your new breasts.

Breast implants are made from two materials. Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water – and offer a round, firm, uniform shape, with a firm feel. While saline breast implants are less expensive, most patients prefer silicone breast implants because of their “natural” shape and texture. Sometimes called “gummy bear breast implants,” newer generations of silicone breast implants contain gel inside that is thicker than traditional silicone gel implants. They maintain their shape even if the implant shell is broken. Silicone breast implants are typically teardrop shaped, to mimic a woman’s natural breast shape.

There are, however, multiple brands or manufacturers of silicone breast implants. Detroit area board certified breast implant surgeon Doctor Ali typically prefers MemoryShape® Breast Implants for their natural shape, feel, and excellent variety of sizes and silhouettes – as well as their impeccable safety record. In this article, Dr. Ali explains why MemoryShape® Breast Implants are an excellent choice for your breast augmentation.

There are several measurements that determine the shape of breast implants. The diameter or width of the implant, as well as the height must be determines. Second is the projection or “profile” which is the distance an implant projects outward from the chest wall. The third is the volume of the breast implant – which is measured in “CCs” (not cup size).

There are five MemoryShape Breast Implant styles. Each has a slightly different shape, based on their width, height and projection measurements. And each of the different styles also comes in a variety of volumes . With all of these options, your breast implant surgery can be customized to your unique body and your personal aesthetic goals.

Introducing SKINVIVE™ – the First Microdroplet Dermal Filler

SKINVIVE™ by Juvéderm a New Kind of Dermal Filler

In the ever-evolving world of aesthetics, new cosmetic innovations are being developed every year. One of those we are most excited about at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI is new SKINVIVE™ by Juvéderm – a groundbreaking shining star in the galaxy of dermal fillers.

AMAE Med Spa, under the expert guidance of Dr. Ali, is thrilled to be one of the first providers in Birmingham, MI and the Detroit area to present this cutting-edge dermal filler to our valued clients. SKINVIVE™ is the newest dermal filler from the trusted Juvéderm brand. And it is the first microdroplet injection technique – offering a fresh perspective on rejuvenating the skin of patients of all ages.

In this article our skilled nurse injectors explain how SKINVIVE™ by Juvéderm can help you achieve radiant, hydrated, and age-defying skin, at every age.

SKINVIVE™ – the First Microdroplet Dermal Filler

In the world of aesthetic enhancements, there’s always a quest for new, innovative ways to achieve a smooth, glowing complexion and beautiful, youthful skin. So, it’s no wonder that SKINVIVE™ by Juvéderm has generated considerable buzz, offering a groundbreaking microdroplet technology that sets it apart from other dermal fillers.

When it comes to youthful, glowing skin, the tiniest details matter. SKINVIVE™ by Juvéderm harnesses the power of microdroplet technology, which fundamentally changes the landscape of dermal fillers. Unlike conventional dermal fillers (which are typically injected deeply into targeted areas), innovative SKINVIVE™ uses extremely small microdroplets of hyaluronic acid that spread under larger areas of the skin to provide natural, consistent results.

The microdroplets are incredibly small, ensuring that the product evenly distributes just beneath the skin’s surface – plumping, hydrating, and hydrating the face. This transformative microdroplet technique allows for an incredibly natural look by reducing the risk of overfilling or creating unnatural bulges.

It’s all about blending the formula seamlessly with your own tissues. With the SKINVIVE™ treatment, you’re left with skin that looks and feels genuinely rejuvenated, without appearing overdone or artificial.

Additionally, SKINVIVE™ also stimulates the body’s own natural collagen production for long-lasting results that continue to improve over time!

Benefits of SKINVIVE™ Dermal Fillers

One of the standout features of SKINVIVE™ is its powerful ability to rejuvenate skin by increasing hydration. Hyaluronic acid, the primary ingredient in SKINVIVE™, is a natural compound already present in your body. As we age, our skin’s natural hyaluronic acid diminishes, leading to dryness, dullness, sagging, fine lines, and wrinkling. By re-introducing this vital component back into your skin, SKINVIVE™ enhances your skin’s ability to retain moisture, restoring its suppleness and natural radiance.

What’s fantastic about SKINVIVE™ is that it’s suitable for clients of all ages. For younger individuals, it’s a proactive choice that helps maintain and boost the skin’s innate vitality for a glowing complexion.  And for more mature patients, SKINVIVE™ serves as a powerful ally in the battle against wrinkles, fine lines, and the gradual loss of skin elasticity.

Sometimes nicknamed “GlowTox,” SKINVIVE™ helps skin look smooth and healthy even without makeup! And when you do wear makeup, SKINVIVE™ ensures that it goes on flawlessly. The outcome? A revitalized complexion, irrespective of your age.

Arm Lift Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Arm Lift Surgery FAQs

Bat wings, bingo wings … whatever you call it, unsightly flab that hangs down from the arms are one of the most common aesthetic concerns among women and men in the Birmingham, MI area. Fortunately, arm lift surgery performed by renowned Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali can make loose, flabby arm skin a thing of the past.

And according to statistics, the popularity of arm lift surgery is on the rise. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that, over the last 10 years, the number of arm lift surgeries performed in the U.S. has increased by a whopping 4,378%!

With new technologies and surgical techniques constantly improving, the entire arm lift surgery process is now easier than ever – for both surgeons and patients! Thanks to modern advancements, arm lift surgery patients are able to enjoy better results than ever, with significantly less downtime.

In this article Birmingham, MI board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali answers frequently asked questions about arm lift surgery.

Is brachioplasty the same as arm lift surgery?

Yes. The medical term for arm lift surgery is brachioplasty. The word brachioplasty comes from the words brachio (meaning arm) and plasty (meaning to reshape).

What is done in arm lift surgery?

During arm lift surgery, excess tissue from the upper arm (sometimes known as a “bat wing”) is surgically removed. Board certified Birmingham, MI area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali performs brachioplasty using either direct excision (wherein the excess tissue is removed by cutting) or through a combination of direct excision and liposuction.

Many of arm lift surgery patients achieve their desired results through direct excision alone. Depending on the needs of each individual patient, however, liposuction may also be necessary.

How is arm lift surgery different from liposuction?

Arm lift surgery is performed to remove damaged or loose skin from the upper arm, whereas liposuction is performed to remove excess fat. Liposuction and arm lift surgery  may be performed together or separately. Depending upon whether the patient has excess fat, excess loose arm skin, or both.

Is arm lift surgery painful?

At AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI, we strive to always provide the most painless experience. During arm lift surgery patients typically receive general anesthetic (are “put under”). And, while we remind our patients that all surgical body contouring procedures come with some degree of discomfort afterwards, the majority of our patients agree that the pain from the arm lift procedure during recovery is extremely tolerable. Arm lift surgery patients are prescribed prescription pain medicine for their recovery, and most patients no longer find their pain medication necessary once a few days have passed.

What type of anesthesia is used for arm lift surgery?

Most cases of arm lift surgery performed at our Birmingham, MI practice see the patient “put under” with general anesthesia. Depending on the needs of the patient, Dr. Ali may also administer an injection of local anesthetic to the surgical area once the patient is fully anesthetized.

Where is the incision made during arm lift surgery?

The size and location of your arm lift surgery incision will be determined by several factors. The amount of tissue being removed, as well as the tissue’s location on the arm will all inform where your arm lift surgery incision is made.

Most arm lift surgery incisions extend from the underarm to the elbow on the upper arm’s underside. In cases where the excess tissue is located exclusively on the upper arm, patients may qualify for a short-scar arm lift surgery, where the incision is made in the armpit area, in the shape of a crescent.

Does arm lift surgery leave scars?

Arm lift surgery – like any surgery – does result in some scarring at the surgical site. However, Dr. Ali’s decades of experience as a board-certified plastic surgeon have provided him with expert skill in concealing and minimizing incision scars. By making arm lift surgery incisions on the arm’s inner side, Dr. Ali is able keep arm lift surgery scars to an absolute minimum.

And, for patients who are good candidates for short-scar arm lift surgery, the incision is made in the shape of a crescent in the armpit area, where it is almost invisible.

What should I expect after my arm lift surgery?

Patients should be able to resume normal activity within a couple days after their arm lift surgery. In order to prevent blood clots, patients should begin light walking within a day of their arm lift surgery. If surgical glue has been used to close the incision, patients will not require having sutures removed. However, arm lift surgery patients may be fitted with surgical drains. Following the procedure, in order to minimize swelling, patients will most likely also be given a compression garment to wear.

We remind our Birmingham, MI area arm lift surgery patients that (as with any surgery) some pain, bruising, or swelling is a perfectly normal part of the recovery process, which should subside after about a month.

Arm lift surgery patients who work in an office can generally return to work as soon as one week after their procedure. For clients who work more physically-intensive jobs, best results tend to come from waiting two weeks before returning to work. But regardless of your employment, all arm lift surgery patients must take extreme care to avoid making any choices that could elevate their blood pressure for at least seven days following surgery.

Strenuous activities must also be avoided for about 6 weeks after arm lift surgery. Depending on each patient’s individual recovery, intermittent follow up visits with board certified Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali will be scheduled.

Can I make my recovery from arm lift surgery faster?

Arm lift surgery patients looking for a swifter recovery process have a number of options available to them. First and foremost, board certified Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali recommends that arm lift surgery clients refrain from smoking for at least 6 weeks prior to their procedure. Additionally, for 10 days before arm lift surgery, patients should abstain from drinking alcohol. And for best results, we strongly suggest that recovering arm lift surgery patients drink a gallon of water per day, for every day of their recovery process.

Arm lift surgery patients should also designate a room of their home specifically for their recovery, and prepare it with everything they will need to be comfortable while they heal. To prevent infection, Dr. Ali will also prescribe antibiotics to all arm lift surgery patients. In order for them to be effective, antibiotics must be taken exactly as prescribed.

How long will results last from my arm lift surgery?

While your body will still undergo the normal changes that come with aging, results from arm lift surgery are more or less permanent. Provided patients neither gain nor lose a significant amount of weight following their procedure, they should be able to enjoy the results of their arm lift surgery permanently.

Is arm lift surgery covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, most insurance providers do not cover arm lift surgery. This is because arm lift surgery is typically considered “purely cosmetic” – meaning it has no medical benefit.

Only if a patient is able to prove that any surgery is a medical necessity, does the possibility exists for it to be fully or partially covered by insurance. However, we do offer convenient and easy financing so patients may get arm lift surgery as soon as possible. Be sure to discuss any financial concerns with our staff, who will gladly inform you of all financing options available to you.

Are there are alternatives to arm lift surgery?

Depending upon the patient’s level of skin looseness or elasticity, they may benefit from one of the non-surgical skin tightening procedures offered at AMAE, such as Profound RF skin tightening.

Additionally, for patients with good skin elasticity who are simply looking to remove excess arm fat, arm lift surgery might not be their only option. Such individuals may be able to reach their appearance goals with treatments like non-invasive CoolSculpting or minimally-invasive liposuction. These treatments are especially effective for tightening and toning arms when when combined with highly-effective, non-surgical Profound skin tightening.

During your consultation with board certified Birmingham, MI area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali, be sure to describe precisely what you hope to accomplish with arm lift surgery. Depending on your needs and desires, Dr. Ali may recommend arm lift surgery, or one of the many other less invasive aesthetic procedures we offer.

Love Your Arms! 4 Treatments for Thinner Arms & Tighter Skin

Four Ways to Get Thinner Arms & Tighten Arm Skin

The holidays are almost here  – including Christmas celebrations and New Year’s Eve parties!  But many women dread getting dressed up for special occasions because they are embarrassed by loose, saggy, or ‘giggly’ skin on their arms. Instead of feeling fabulous in short sleeve, sleeveless, off the shoulder, or strapless dresses, women with drooping arm skin often bundle up in long sleeves and jackets to hide their arms.

Arm fat, as well as unsightly flabby skin that hangs down from the arms, can also make a man or woman self-conscious about baring their arms in tank tops, bathing suits or sleeveless summer clothing! Additionally,  arm fat can be especially frustrating for women preparing for a big event – such as a wedding or other formal occasion! Because the latest fashions in wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, and evening wear, are most often sleeveless, excess arm fat or skin can turn dress shopping from a joyous occasion into one of sadness and disappointment.

But that does NOT have to be the case! At AMAE in the Troy, MI area we offer several surgical – as well as non-surgical and non-invasive treatments – that can trim and tone arms. In this article Troy, MI board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali shares the details of four top arm tightening treatments available at AMAE.

Non-Surgical, Non-Invasive Arm Fat Treatment

At AMAE in the Troy, MI area we offer CoolSculpting to get rid of arm fat – the #1 non-invasive procedure in the world for permanently reducing arm fat!  CoolSculpting gets rid of arm fat painlessly and permanently – without surgery, diet or exercise.

A single CoolSculpting treatment will typically reduce the fat layer thickness in the arms by 20-25% in just a single treatment.  And, additional treatments will produce even more fat reduction in the upper arms. While CoolSculpting is loved by our Troy, MI area patients because there is no downtime, results are gradual and take a little time.

Full results develop over time, as the body naturally eliminates the frozen fat cells – so schedule CoolSculpting three months before the big event to see complete arm fat reduction results by the big day!

Non-Surgical, Non-Invasive Arm Skin Tightening

While CoolSculpting has some mild, but not dramatic skin, tightening effects, we also offer state-of-the-art new Profound skin tightening. Profound can be used on its own to tighten lax, flabby arm skin – or in conjunction with CoolSculpting to reduce fat and tone loose skin on the arms.

AMAE was one of the first providers in the Troy, MI area to offer revolutionary new Profound radiofrequency skin tightening. Profound stimulates renewed production of collagen and elastin – the building blocks of tight, toned, elastic skin. Profound also rejuvenates the production of hyaluronic acid, another substance produced by the body to yield smoother, tighter skin.

Surgical Arm Fat Removal

For larger amounts of arm fat removal liposuction can be highly effective. It is performed under anesthesia for a completely comfortable experience. Only tiny, well concealed scars will be left that fade over time.

Liposuction immediately removes fat from the arms by sucking it out through a small straw-like cannula. After about 3 weeks, most of the swelling will have gone down leaving visible results. These results will continue to improve over the next 6 months or so as the swelling completely subsides.

There is downtime of at least three days after liposuction – with a compression garment worn for several days. And there will be limits on physical activity for a few weeks. So make sure to schedule your liposuction well in advance of any big event.

Arm Lift Surgical Skin Tightening

People with decent skin elasticity may see their arms naturally “bounce back” and tighten after liposuction. Others with more skin laxity may need to tighten the remaining skin with Profound radiofrequency, discussed above. But patients with excessive amounts of loose, hanging or flabby skin may want to consider a surgical arm lift for optimal arm skin tightening and toning.

With new surgical techniques and technologies, arm lift surgery is now safer, easier, less invasive and more comfortable than ever. As a result, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that, over the last 10 years, the number of arm lift surgeries performed in the U.S. has increased by a whopping 4,378%!

Thanks to these advancements, arm lift surgery patients are able to enjoy better results than ever, with smaller less conspicuous scars, and significantly less downtime.

During arm lift surgery, excess skin from the upper arm (sometimes known as a “bat wing”) is surgically removed, using incisions that are strategically placed to be less visible.  The remaining skin is then tightly pulled together and sutured – leaving trim, toned arms.

Downtime can range from 1 to 2 weeks, and strenuous activities must also be avoided for about 6 weeks after arm lift surgery. But patients universally agree that the longer recovery period is well worth it to achieve the most dramatically trimmed and tightened arms possible.

The Rhinoplasty Consultation

Perhaps better known as a “nose job,” rhinoplasty is a form of plastic surgery that both sculpts the shape of the nose’s exterior for aesthetic purposes, and the noses interior to aid with breathing. Successful rhinoplasty surgery provides the patient with a nose that still looks natural, but exists in better harmony and balance with the rest of the face. The general consensus is that the best rhinoplasty results are those where the nose doesn’t look as though it has been so much as touched.

In order to determine if one is a good candidate for rhinoplasty, one must first visit AMAE for a consultation with board certified Troy, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali. Patients will be have the opportunity to discuss any and all cosmetic concerns they have going into rhinoplasty. Dr. Ali will also check for any potential breathing issues by carefully examining the inside of the patient’s nose.

During the consultation, rhinoplasty patients frequently shown before-and-after photos of past rhinoplasty patients whose noses are similar in size to their own. This allows patients a better understanding of what they can realistically expect from rhinoplasty. See Rhinoplasty Before & After Photos

AMAE Plastic Surgery is also among the first and only aesthetic practices in Michigan to offer state-of-the-art Vectra 3D facial imaging. This revolutionary imaging system enables Dr. Ali to show you your options and the expected outcomes before your rhinoplasty surgery.

Ideal Rhinoplasty Candidate

Rhinoplasty candidates must first and foremost be of sufficient nasal maturity (usually no younger than 15 years of age.) Rhinoplasty patients must also have the emotional maturity required to completely understand the purpose of rhinoplasty and all risks and implications included therein. Patients should also make sure their goals do not exceed the limitations of the procedure, and go into their rhinoplasty surgery with realistic expectations of the outcome.

Additionally, at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Troy, MI, we strong discourage anyone suffering from body dysmorphia from undergoing rhinoplasty surgery. While everyone experiences a certain element of insecurity from time to time, it is important to us that more intense feelings of physical insecurity not be our rhinoplasty patient’s main motivator.

Conditions Rhinoplasty Treats

At AMAE Plastic Surgery in Troy, MI, we provide rhinoplasty as a method of treating a number of conditions. For starters, rhinoplasty can be used to treat bumps at the bridge of the nose known as Dorsal Humps. Rhinoplasty can also address the width of one’s nose, as well as correct asymmetry in noses that are deviated or twisted.

Rhinoplasty can also correct issues of the nasal airway, such as internal valve collapse or septal deviation, and can also be performed to repair drooping nasal tips. Rhinoplasty is also beneficial in repairing deformities caused by trauma to the nose.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty

Much like all other forms of surgery, being thoroughly prepared is the key to a successful rhinoplasty procedure with a smooth recovery period. Prior to undergoing rhinoplasty, we recommend our patients regularly apply the homeopathic herb arnica to the treatment area. This will help reduce swelling, bruising, and bleeding.

For at least a month prior to rhinoplasty surgery, patients should also avoid consuming caffeine and alcohol. In the month leading up to their surgery, rhinoplasty patients must also refrain from smoking.

The Rhinoplasty Surgery Procedure

At AMAE Plastic Surgery in Troy, MI, most of our rhinoplasty procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. There are two distinct methods of performing the procedure: Open Rhinoplasty and Closed Rhinoplasty. While both methods involve making an incision in the internal nostril region, Open Rhinoplasty also includes an additional, external incision on the tissue dividing the nostrils.

The skin of the nose will then be “undraped,” allowing for visibility of the nose’s inner structures. Open Rhinoplasty allows for substantial changes to be made to the nose, and is most commonly performed either to correct a previous, “botched” procedure, and on patients whose noses have a particularly challenging anatomy.

During Closed Rhinoplasty, on the other hand, no external incisions are made. With them all instead made inside the nose, Open Rhinoplasty is less likely to result in scarring. However, the results of Closed Rhinoplasty are considerably subtler than Open Rhinoplasty.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali carefully determines the method of rhinoplasty best suited to meet his patients’ needs, and has an outstanding track record performing countless instances of both Open and Closed Rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Recovery & Downtime

While no two cases of rhinoplasty are ever the same, most cases of both open and closed rhinoplasty are followed by at least one-to-two weeks of downtime. Most Closed Rhinoplasty patients experience the most rapid period of recovery within 5 to 6 days, after which time they are free to remove the splint from their nose and resume their normal daily routine.

But although rhinoplasty patients usually experience a relatively quick period of initial recovery, their complete healing process can continue for as long as one to three years. Since the skin of the nose requires time to shrink to its new, underlying framework, the total healing process is longer than many other forms of cosmetic surgery.

But while rhinoplasty patients do experience a recovery period longer than other plastic surgery patients, they generally also experience less pain. While rhinoplasty usually results in a fair amount of bruising and swelling, patients routinely report any pain following the procedure to be surprisingly tolerable. To ensure his rhinoplasty patients experience as little pain as possible, board-certified Troy, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali gladly recommends and prescribes appropriate pain medications.
