In this article we answer our patients’ most Facelift Frequently Asked Questions about facelift surgery. But the best way to get your facelift questions answered is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic surgery in the Troy, MI area.

What is a Facelift?

Rhytidectomy -the medical name for facelift- a surgical means of improving the face and neck’s visible signs of aging. As the aging process continues, both the muscles and skin of the facial region are subject to a loss in tone. A facelift can help reverse this by re-draping the skin of the face and neck, removing deposits of fat, and tightening deeper facial structures. A facelift may be performed by itself, or in a combination with other cosmetic procedures such as a brow lift, neck lift, eyelid surgery, or liposuction.

Is a facelift procedure right for me?

Whether or not someone is a good facelift candidate will vary from person to person. Prior to every procedure, Troy, MI area board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali comprehensively evaluates each of his patients to determine whether facelift surgery is right for them. Once this is determined, Dr. Ali will educate the patient on all the specifics of their procedure and makes sure they are comfortable with their treatment plan. And for patients whom he determines are not right for the procedure, Dr. Ali will offer other treatments available that can help reach their specific aesthetic goals.

At AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Troy, MI area we also offer Profound Skin Tightening, CO2RE Wrinkle Reduction, Morpheus8 Microneedling, Exosome Treatments, “Liquid Facelifts”, Dermal Fillers, that can lift and tighten sagging skin, and reverse signs of aging.

What should I expect during a facelift consultation?

Board certified Troy, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali takes great care to make sure each facelift patient is sufficiently prepared for their procedure. This begins by conducting a consultation with the patient, during which the patient’s medical history and treatment goals will be extensively discussed. The patient’s facial features will also be analyzed, to help determine the best course of treatment.

During the consultation, patients will also receive in-depth answers to any questions they may have regarding their facelift. Based on this information, the patient can determine if they still feel a facelift is the best way to meet their aesthetic goals. Should the patient or the doctor determine this not to be the case, alternative methods of facial rejuvenation will be discussed.

Will a facelift make me look stretched?

No, as long as it performed by a skilled and highly experienced board certified plastic surgeon.

In the time during which the facelift was being perfected, plastic surgeons typically performed the procedure by pulling back the skin of the face, cutting away the remaining skin, and sewing up the incision. Since then, remarkable advancements have been made that rely on lifting and tightening facial muscles and restoring volume, rather than simply tightly pulling the skin. The end result is a much more natural appearance than the dramatic “stretched” look people often erroneously associate with early facelift procedures from several decades ago.

In sum, a skilled board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali can make a patient look years younger, by tightening skin in a natural looking manner.

Will a facelift also fix my sagging neck?

Facelift surgery is frequently combined with a neck lift, as long as the patient is an appropriate candidate. Neck lifts are most commonly performed to treat the appearance of a “turkey neck” – loose folds of skin beneath the chin. Neck lifts are also performed to restore the underlying muscle structures of the patient’s neck.

What kind of anesthesia is used for a facelift?

The anesthesia used in a facelift will depend on the specifics of the procedure being performed. Facelift patients have the option of either local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia (being “put under”), with the latter being the significantly more common choice.

During the consultation, board-certified Troy, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali will discuss all options regarding anesthesia. At AMAE Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ali’s surgical team employs an expert, board certified anesthesiologist, whose skills are put to use on a regular basis throughout every week.

How long does the facelift surgery last?

The time it takes to perform a facelift fluctuates from patient to patient, based on which exact procedure will best meet the patient’s desired outcome. On average, however, it takes 3 to 4 hours to perform facelift surgery.

The mid-facelift, a relatively simple procedure performed on the cheek/temple area, can generally be performed in roughly 2 hours. Conversely, a traditional facelift, as well as a neck lift or eye lift, can take up to 5 or 6 hours.

Where will My Facelift Be Performed?

One of the advantages of choosing board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali for your facelift surgery is that he operates his own fully accredited, private surgical center on Woodward Avenue in the Bloomfield Hills area. Rather than having to deal with the crowds and hassle of a larger hospital, you will be pampered at state-of-the-art La Belle Surgery Center where your privacy, safety, comfort, and personalized care are our top priority!

How much time off should I arrange for my facelift?

Facelift patients who work at a desk or other sedentary jobs generally only need to recover for about two weeks before being presentable to return to work.

For some facelift patients, some swelling and bruising may still be visible after two weeks have passed. Generally, this won’t be noticeable to others, but any facelift patients concerned about such side effects should be completely in the clear after just one additional week.

More healing time may be required of facelift patients who work in a more physically strenuous field. Consult with Dr. Ali about how much downtime he recommends based on your employment.

How long will it take to fully recover from a facelift?

The rate at which it takes to heal from a facelift will be different for every patient. For the most part, younger patients will heal faster from their facelift than patients who are more mature. Regardless of age, most patients can expect to be able to resume to work and other normal activities after 2 weeks.

The entire facelift healing process can be broken down into a series of stages:

The first stage of facelift recovery will last roughly 10 days. This stage will see swelling continue to increase until the fourth day or so, then will begin to subside.

Between the 10th and 14th day after a facelift, the decrease in swelling and bruising is typically sufficient for the patient to feel comfortable returning to work and engaging in social activities.

The next stage of facelift recovery process will see the healing process continue until achieving final results. While this stage can last between 3 weeks and 6 months, 90% can see final results after 3 months.

For at least 4-6 weeks after surgery, patients should avoid engaging in strenuous activity such as intense physical exercise. Additionally, for the first several months of recovery, facelift patients should significantly limit their exposure to the sun.

Will I need someone to take me home or take care of me after a facelift?

It is Dr. Ali’s recommendation that in addition to being driven home from their procedure by someone else, facelift patients should have a friend or family member stay with the patient for at least the first several days after facelift surgery.

Patients who visit the Troy, MI area’s AMAE Plastic Surgery from out of town, as well as patients who prefer to recover from their facelift in a more luxurious environment, Dr. Ali can recommend a surgical aftercare facility, such as Pearl Recovery Retreat, staffed by skilled nurses trained to provide the utmost in surgical recovery care.

What technique is used for a facelift?

While board-certified Troy, MI plastic surgeon customizes each facelift surgery he performs to the unique goals and skin condition of the patient, the following outlines the “basics” used in many of the facelifts performed at AMAE Plastic Surgery:

The “classic facelift” is performed to treat skin that is loose or has begun to sag on the lower third of the face and neck. During a traditional facelift, Dr. Ali will make an incision behind and slightly in front of the ears. Then, the skin of the face will be lifted from the muscle and underlying tissue of the face. The skin will then be tightened, with excess skin being removed before closing the incision. After applying a bandage to the face, the facelift surgery is complete.

During the consultation, Dr. Ali explains to each patient the different type of lifts available, and makes a recommendation on which facelift procedure will best meet their needs and goals.

A mid facelift, on the other hand, is performed to simply treat the cheek and temple area of the face’s middle third. Similar to a facelift, a neck lift is performed to treat sagging skin in the neck-jawline area, separate from the skin of the upper face.

Will I have scars after my Facelift?

Any type of surgery that involves incisions necessarily results in some scarring. However, a skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali is a master at strategically placing incisions to conceal them.

People with longer hair can usually take advantage of it as a means of concealing their facelift surgery scars. Patients with shorter hair who wish to hide their scars may with to consider letting avoiding the salon or barber shop until they have healed completely.

How long will a Facelift last?

While age, gravity, and environmental factors will always continue to affect a person’s skin, a facelift is designed to last roughly ten years, putting the patient a decade behind the aging process.

Some patients do choose to undergo an additional facelift procedure once they start to see the results fade, but most patients feel that their initial procedure reversed the sands of time a satisfactory amount for one lifetime.

The Facelift Recovery Process: Planning Your Surgery

What is Facelift Recovery Like?

Facelifts remain among the most popular cosmetic surgeries.  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics for 2022, the most recent data available, there were 72,668 facelift surgeries performed in the United States.  The popularity of facelift surgery comes as no surprise, as almost everyone wants to look younger … especially in selfies, on social media, in dating app profile pics, and during Zoom meetings and video conferences.

But while we all want to look younger, one consideration surrounding facelift surgery is how long the recovery takes. After all we all have busy lives – and have to get back to work, parenting and other daily activities as soon as possible! And, like any type of surgery, a facelift does require so time to rest and heal. Knowing what to expect and how long it will take can help you plan and prepare – to make your facelift recovery easier, speedier and more comfortable.

In this article, top facelift surgeon Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI explains the facelift recovery process.

Facelift Recovery: Immediately After Surgery

Your sedation will wear off gradually after your surgery is complete. Some patients may feel cold and/or somewhat nauseated upon waking up in the recovery room, after face lift surgery. This is normal and nothing to cause concern. The patient’s face may also feel tight and tender as they awaken after the facelift surgery, as the anesthesia wears off.

Most patients spend a few hours in observation as they wake up. Typically facelift patients will be able to go home the same day. But you will need someone there to drive you home. In some cases of more extensive surgery a patient may stay overnight for observation at the hospital or surgical center.

In either case, patients usually have a bandage around the face to help minimize swelling and bruising – and may also have small drainage tubes. Before going home, Dr. Ali’s staff will give the patient specific instructions for facelift surgery recovery, including how to care for incision site(s) and drains. You will also be given a prescription for medication to control pain, that you only need to take if necessary.

Facelift Recovery: Dressings, Drains and Pain

After some facelift procedures the plastic surgeons may apply a large, fluffy dressing to reduce swelling. If used, the dressing will typically be replaced with an elastic wrap within a day or two.

Again, depending on the extensiveness of the facelift procedure, a patient may also have one to three drainage tubes. These reduce swelling by removing any excess blood and fluids. These drainage tubes may be left in place for one to several days. Patients will be instructed on care and removal of any drainage tubes.

There may be mild to moderate discomfort in the hours and days following your facelift. Dr. Ali will prescribe painkillers that are very effective at relieving any discomfort. As long as you take your medication as directed, the pain is very manageable and will subside in the next week or two at most. Dr. Ali will also typically prescribed antibiotics to prevent the risk of an infection after your facelift.

Patients must sleep with their head elevated for about two weeks following a facelift to help prevent swelling. They may sleep on two pillows, use a wedge-shaped foam pillow, or even sleep upright in a recliner – whatever is most comfortable for them, as long as the head is elevated above the heart.

Facelift Recovery: Resuming Activities

As a general rule, most patients are up and about pretty much “as normal” doing mild activities within a few days after a facelift. Generally patients can wash their hair after two days.

However, because bruising and swelling are normal parts of the healing process, patients won’t be able to see what their face will look like for a few weeks. The swelling may gradually increase over the first three days, but then the swelling will start to dissipate. As a result of the bruising and swelling, be prepared to look worse before you look better! But be patient. Soon you will look younger and better than ever.

Patients will usually be advised to walk around three or four times a day after their facelift, in order to boost circulation as well as help prevent the development of blood clots in the legs. Do not bend over, and do not lift heavy objects until your plastic surgeon tells you that you can!

Facelift Recovery: Things to Avoid

Patients are advised to avoid steam rooms, saunas, steam face masks, or anything that causes facial flushing. Patients must also avoid supplements containing niacin, niacinamide, or niacinamate.

Do not consume alcohol, aspirin, fish oil, or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen) until your plastic surgeon tells you that it is OK.

If your facelift was the kind that involved mouth incisions, your diet may also be restricted. Dr. Ali will advise you what you can eat, and when, if you have mouth incisions.

Facelift Recovery: Returning to Work

Most people can go back to work within two weeks of their facelift. This will depend on the extensiveness of the procedure as well as how strenuous their job is. Dr. Ali will advise you during your consultation when you should be able to go back to work.

Many people choose to cover the residual bruising with makeup when they are ready to venture out into the world again.

Within one to four months after your facelift it should be completely healed, and the final results will be fully visible. So if you are getting a facelift for an occasion such as a wedding or reunion, make sure to schedule it at least 4 months (or more) in advance.

Facelifts are a very common plastic surgery with very high satisfaction rates. But, it is important that patients are in good general physical and mental health in order to heal rapidly. Everybody heals differently and the patients age, overall health, and the extensiveness of the surgery will all effect healing and recovery time.  Smoking can delay or prevent proper healing and increase the risk of complications – so facelift patients should try to quit or abstain from smoking both leading up to, and after, facelift surgery.

Facelift Recovery: Other Activities

After facelift surgery, it is essential to give your body adequate time to heal and recover before resuming normal activities. Generally, patients can expect to return to light activities within one to two weeks following surgery, although this timeline may vary depending on the extent of the procedure and individual healing rates. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four to six weeks to prevent strain on the healing tissues.

Driving may be safely resumed once patients are no longer taking prescription pain medication and feel physically comfortable and alert behind the wheel, typically around one to two weeks post-surgery. Engaging in sexual activity may be gradually resumed after a few weeks, depending on the patient’s comfort level and their surgeon’s recommendations. Flying on a plane may, in some cases, be permissible after the initial two-week recovery period, although patients should consult with their plastic surgeon to ensure that they are medically cleared for air travel. If you do fly, be sure to take appropriate precautions, such as staying hydrated and moving around periodically during the flight, to reduce the risk of blood clots.

It is important to remember that each patient’s recovery experience may differ based on factors such as the extent of surgery, individual healing capacity, and any underlying medical conditions. Patients should closely follow their own plastic surgeon’s post-operative instructions and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth and successful recovery. By adhering to your surgeon’s guidance and allowing ample time for rest and recuperation, you can avoid complications, recover fully, and enjoy the long-lasting benefits of facelift surgery.

The Different Types of Facelift Procedures

Top Facelift Techniques

There are several different types of facelift procedures and techniques, offering different cosmetic results, and varying degrees of invasiveness, downtime and recovery.  Different types of facelifts target different areas of the face – and can have varying types and shapes of incisions, and different numbers of tissue layers treated.

In this article Birmingham, Michigan board certified plastic surgeon explains the different general types of facelift techniques. He will also offer you a consultation in our Birmingham office to understand your unique needs, answer your questions, and help you choose the type of facelift that is right for you.

The Deep Plane Facelift

The deep plane lift facelift is a “full” facelift that is recommended for people with severe facial sagging and laxity, and for those men and women desiring a longer-lasting facelift. Full, deep plane facelifts involve lifting and separating the skin from the “SMAS” layer below it and releasing and repositioning the muscles used for smiling, frowning, and other facial expressions.

Typically an incision is made along the hairline, from the hair-bearing temple area, the incisions are extended downward along natural creases, proceeding inside the ear, then along the ear lobe, and ending out of sight behind the ears. After the SMAS is repositioned, excess and loose skin is removed, and the edges are sutured or stapled in place.

The effects of a full facelift can last from 10 to 15 years, and sometimes longer. Because of the extensive nature of a full facelift, the recovery time is longer than other facelift procedures.

The SMAS Facelift

The SMAS facelift affects the superficial top layers of skin and the deeper tissues of the face and neck – and are ideal for men and women with mild laxity, some jowls and mid-face sagging due to aging. In an SMAS facelift, the plastic surgeon creates an incision at the temple, above the hairline, which extends downward, following the skin’s natural crease in front of the ear, below the ear lobe and then behind your ear.

The plastic surgeon then tightens the SMAS (the muscles used for smiling, frowning, and other facial expressions) using sutures. Any excess skin is then removed and the remaining skin is stitched up.

The SMAS lift differs from a deep plane lift in that no “attachments” underneath the SMAS are released during the process. Though not as long lasting as a full facelift, an SMAS Facelift comes with less recovery time.

Short Scar Facelifts

A “short scar facelift” is just a general term for several facelift techniques that require smaller scars. Short scar lifts, are good options for people in their 40s and 50s with minimal to moderate excess skin, or those who have no visible signs of aging on the neck.

S-shaped and MAC (minimal access cranial suspension) facelifts are both short scar facelifts. Unlike other types of facelifts, short scar facelift incisions do not extend behind the ear. However, the surgeon still re-suspends the tissues that supports the smile lines and jowls, and can tighten a moderate amount of loose skin.

Facelift + Neck Lift

With age, a number of changes take place in the neck, as well as the face, adding years to a person’s appearance. Some of these changes include excess fatty deposits, sagginess and drooping of the skin (jowls or “turkey neck”), and development of thick neck bands also known as platysma bands. Neck lift surgery is typically done in conjunction with a facelift, but can also be performed alone.

The main purpose of neck lift surgery is to enhance the definition of the jawline and smooth the neck. During the procedure, loose skin in the neck in tightened, excess fat is removed, and the stretched neck muscle is reduced. The procedure is performed by placing incisions under the chin and around the ears. When there is an abundance of extra skin in this area, it needs to be removed as part of the lift. Sometimes liposuction is necessary to remove the excess fat, which will be determined by you and Dr. Ali at the time of your consultation. The visible edges of the loose neck muscles are sutured together and tightened.

When performed by a skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali, neck lift surgery can take years off of your appearance!

Midface Facelift or Cheek Lift

The midface facelift or “cheek lift” targets only the middle third of the face. Midface facelifts can improve nose-to-mouth lines (“parentheses” or “puppet lines”) and can also be used to lift sagging cheeks.

Typically, an incision is placed in the hairline and the inside of the mouth. The cosmetic surgeon then lifts and repositions the natural fatty layer over your cheekbones. An isolated mid-facelift can be also sometimes be performed done through the lower eyelid when eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is done.

The midface facelift or “cheek lift” provides a more subtle freshening-up of the appearance, with minimal risk and less downtime than full facelifts or SMAS facelifts.

“Pseudo” Facelifts

“Endoscopic Facelift” (not recommended)

An endoscopic procedure that lifts the cheeks through small incisions is sometimes called an “endoscopic facelift”. And while this surgery is much less invasive, and has a much shorter recovery time, it is not a true facelift and is effective only for cheek sagging. Any skin or neck lifting cannot be done endoscopically. So “endoscopic facelifts” do not have the dramatic results, or the longevity, of full or SMAS facelifts.

If sagging cheeks are the only cosmetic issue you seek to treat, a top facelift surgeon like Dr. Ali can typically treat these issues non-surgically with autologous fat transfer, long lasting dermal fillers, and advanced new skin tightening technologies – without the need for incisions or anesthetic.

Lifestyle Lifts & Thread Lifts (not recommended)

Some men and women are still curious about facelift techniques they may have heard about in commercials – such as “Lifestyle Lift” or “Thread Lifts.” These trendy procedures are typically NOT performed by experienced and reputable plastic surgeons, like Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI.

While thread lifts are “fast and easy” with minimal downtime, these procedures have many limitations, often including poor results, and cosmetic benefits that do not last very long. A thread lift simply pulls skin up – which often looks unnatural. And the effects of a thread lift generally only last less than a year – while facelift benefits extend a decade or more.  You can read more about why Dr. Ali does NOT offer threads lift procedures in our article HERE.

Which Facelift Technique is Right for Me?

6 Ways Rhinoplasty Surgery Can Improve Your Appearance

Rhinoplasty Surgery: More Than Just a Smaller Nose

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as nose reshaping or a “nose job”, is a common surgical procedure that most people associate with reducing the size of the nose. But, while common, when performed with artistic skill and years of medical experience, a plastic surgeon can do much more with rhinoplasty than just make the nose smaller.

A talented rhinoplasty surgeon like Dr. Ali in Oakland County can also improve the symmetry, shape, proportions and overall appearance of the nose. From correcting functional issues to enhancing facial harmony, rhinoplasty surgery can address a variety of concerns to help patients achieve their desired look and improve their quality of life.

In this article, top Oakland County rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Ali explains how nose job surgery can enhancing beauty and enhance facial harmony in a number of ways – to help patients achieve their desired look, increase their confidence, and improve their quality of life.

#1. Rhinoplasty Surgery for a Smaller Nose

The most common reason both male and female patients seek rhinoplasty surgery is to reduce the size of their nose. Whether the nose is overly large or disproportionate to the rest of the facial features, rhinoplasty can sculpt and refine the nasal contours to create a more harmonious appearance.

By carefully reshaping the nasal framework and removing excess tissue, a skilled rhinoplasty surgeon can achieve a smaller, more proportionate nose that complements the natural beauty of the face – while also still keeping the nose functional and structurally sound.

One of the biggest mistakes that inexperienced rhinoplasty surgeons make is making the nose too small. Not only does this result in the patient looking unnatural or like they “have had work done”, compromising the nasal structure can lead to breathing issues and even collapse of the nose. Michael Jackson is a classic example of rhinoplasty surgery that was far too aggressive.

That is why choosing a skilled and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in Oakland County is essential to achieving a safe, natural-looking, and beautiful nose job outcome.

#2. Rhinoplasty Surgery for a Crooked Nose

A crooked nose can be due to genetics, injury, or even previous surgery. And in addition to detracting from facial symmetry, a crooked nose can also cause functional breathing problems.

Rhinoplasty surgery can correct a crooked nose by straightening the nasal bridge, adjusting the nasal bones, and realigning the nasal septum. By restoring balance and alignment to the nose, rhinoplasty can not only enhance facial harmony and improve the aesthetic appearance, it can also improve one’s breathing.

#3. Rhinoplasty Surgery for Better Facial Proportions

Facial proportions play a crucial role in overall facial aesthetics, and the nose serves as a central focal point. A nose that might look perfectly suitable on a large man can appear disproportionate and unattractive on a smaller women. Similarly, a larger nose will look in balance on a person with large eyes and large lips – but may be too prominent for a person whose other features are on the small side.

Rhinoplasty surgery can address nasal imbalances to achieve better facial proportions and harmony. Whether the nose is too large, too small, or disproportionate to other facial features, skilled rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Ali in Oakland County can sculpt and refine the nasal contours to create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance that complements your other facial features and contributes to the natural beauty of your face.

#4. Rhinoplasty Surgery for a Nasal Hump

A nasal hump, also known as a dorsal hump or a bump on the bridge of the nose, can be a source of self-consciousness for many individuals. Rhinoplasty surgery can remove or reduce the nasal hump by reshaping the nasal bones and cartilage to create a smoother and more aesthetically pleasing nasal profile.
By eliminating the dorsal hump, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali in Oakland County can enhance the overall appearance of your nose, for a stunning silhouette and improved facial harmony.

#5. Rhinoplasty Surgery for a More Pronounced Tip

In some cases, patients may desire a more pronounced nasal tip to achieve a specific aesthetic ideal. Certain ethnicities are prone to shorter or flatter noses, such as some Asian individuals. And while Asian features are generally considered extremely beautiful, some patients may desire a more pronounced nasal tip to create a more defined and sculpted appearance.

Whether the goal is to increase tip projection, refine tip definition, or create a more angular tip shape, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in Oakland County can achieve a customized result that meets each patient’s unique goals and preferences – while still ensuring that the results are natural-looking and respect the unique ethnic heritage of each individual patient.

#6. Rhinoplasty Surgery for Smaller Nostrils

As with all of our features, nose shape is largely hereditary. And certain ethnicities are also prone to larger or wider nostrils. Rhinoplasty surgery can address nostril size and shape by reshaping and refining the nostril openings to create a proportionate and balanced appearance that the patient desires.

When reducing nostril width and adjusting nostril shape, however, it is essential to select a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in Oakland County who understands African American rhinoplasty. With artistic skill and years of experienced working with facial anatomy, Dr. Ali can enhance the appearance of the nostrils in a way that looks natural and respects each patient’s individual ethnicity.

Liposuction is More Than Just Losing Inches

6 Ways Liposuction Gives You a Better Body

Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body to reduce size, as well as improve contour and shape. But while it’s often associated with simply losing inches, liposuction can address a variety of aesthetic concerns beyond just slimming down.

In this article, top Oakland County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains five issues that liposuction can effectively improve, helping patients achieve their desired body goals in Oakland County.

#1. Liposuction for a Flatter Abs & Smaller Waist

One of the most common areas treated with liposuction is the waistline, where stubborn fat deposits can accumulate and create an undesirable bulge or protruding belly.

While everyone knows that you simply cannot spot reduce with diet or exercise, liposuction can effectively target these localized fat pockets around the abdomen and flanks, sculpting a slimmer and more defined waistline – as well as flatter abs.
Where fat is stored on the body is largely hereditary. That’s why eating right and going to the gym is often ineffective at getting the body to shed weight from the middle. By removing excess fat cells, liposuction can reduce the circumference of the waist in a targeted way that is not possible by simply reducing calories or working out, resulting in a flatter abdomen, more proportionate waist, and improve the shape and silhouette of both women and men.

#2. Liposuction for a Better Buttocks

For genetic reasons, fat loss in the butt is often almost impossible. For patients seeking a more lifted and shapely buttock appearance, liposuction can be used in combination with fat transfer techniques to augment and enhance the buttocks.

Commonly known as the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), this procedure involves harvesting fat from donor areas via liposuction, purifying it, and then strategically injecting it into the buttocks to create volume and improve contour.

#3. Liposuction for Better Proportions

By targeting specific trouble spots, liposuction can also be used to improve overall body proportions and symmetry. For example, while a 34-inch waist may not look too big on a woman with fuller breasts and wider hips, a 34-inch waste can look like a huge belly on a small-boned woman with a 32 inch chest.

By precisely removing excess fat from areas that may be disproportionately larger or asymmetrical compared to the rest of the body, liposuction can create a more harmonious and balanced physique. Whether it’s reducing excess fat in the belly, arms, thighs, or back, liposuction can help patients achieve better overall proportions and enhance their body contours.

#4. Liposuction for Male Breasts

Enlarged male breasts, is a common condition that can cause self-consciousness and discomfort for many men. While “man boobs” can occur at any age, they become more likely as men age and muscle-maintaining testosterone levels decline.

Liposuction can effectively remove both excess fat and glandular tissue caused by gynecomastia in a man’s chest area, resulting in a flatter and more masculine chest contour. A skilled and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in Oakland County can offer liposuction techniques tailored specifically for gynecomastia that can help men achieve a more sculpted chest appearance, restoring confidence and improving self-esteem.

#5. Liposuction for a Double Chin

Excess fat under the chin, often referred to as a “double chin,” can detract from facial harmony and make individuals appear older or heavier than they actually are. Unfortunately, double-chins are often hereditary – and diet and exercise do not reduce them.

Liposuction can target this stubborn fat beneath the chin, sculpting a more defined jawline and neckline. Through small incisions, a thin tube called a cannula is inserted to suction out the unwanted fat, resulting in a more youthful and contoured facial profile in both men and women.

#6. Liposuction for Flabby Arms

Flabby arms, often referred to as “bat wings,” can be a source of frustration for many individuals, especially as they age or after significant weight loss. Liposuction can effectively target excess fat deposits in the upper arms, resulting in a more toned and contoured appearance.

By removing localized fat pockets and refining the arm contours, liposuction can help patients achieve smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking arms. And for patients with excess fat as well as significantly loose skin in the upper arms, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali in Oakland County can combine liposuction with arm lift surgery, for gorgeous, firm, sculpted arms.

Combining Liposuction with Other Procedures

Liposuction can also be combined with other surgical procedures to achieve comprehensive body contouring and enhancement. For example, liposuction can be performed in conjunction with Profound™ skin tightening to address both excess fat and loose skin, resulting in more dramatic and long-lasting results.

Additionally, liposuction can complement procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast lift by removing excess fat and improving overall body proportions. By customizing treatment plans to meet each patient’s unique needs and goals, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in Oakland County can provide a tailored solutions for complete and comprehensive body contouring.

8 Ways Breast Augmentation Surgery Can Improve Your Physique

Breast Augmentation Surgery: More Than Just Bigger Breasts

When discussing breast augmentation surgery, the first thing that comes to mind is bigger breasts. However, beyond simply increasing breast size, breast augmentation surgery can also address a variety of body concerns, providing women with improved symmetry, shape, proportion, and position of their breasts.

In this article, top Oakland County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explores seven common issues that breast augmentation surgery can effectively improve.

#1. Breast Augmentation Surgery for Bigger Breasts

Breast augmentation surgery, also known as mammoplasty, is most commonly used to enhance breast size. For women seeking larger breasts, breast augmentation offers a transformative solution by increasing breast volume and achieving a fuller bustline. During the procedure, breast implants are strategically placed either above or below the chest muscles to achieve the desired size.

#2. Breast Augmentation Surgery for Uneven Breasts

Many women experience breast asymmetry, where one breast is larger or differently shaped than the other. Breast augmentation surgery can correct breast asymmetry by placing implants of varying sizes to achieve balance and symmetry between the breasts.

By customizing implant size and shape to match the patient’s unique anatomy, plastic surgeons can create a more harmonious and proportionate appearance, boosting confidence and self-esteem.

#3. Breast Augmentation Surgery for More Cleavage

Some women may desire rounder breasts with improved “upper pole” fullness. Breast “upper pole” fullness refers to the volume and projection of the upper portion of the breast, extending from the nipple to the clavicle. This area is often associated with youthful breast appearance and enhances “cleavage” – in the same way that a push-up bra improves the appearance of the décolleté.

#4. Breast Augmentation Surgery for More Proportionate Breasts

Women with naturally small or underdeveloped breasts may feel self-conscious about their breast size in relation to their overall body proportions. Remember breast size is “relative”: while 34 B breasts may appear large on a small-boned women, or proportionate on an average sized woman, 34B may look small relative to a woman with a wider chest wall or larger hips.

Breast augmentation surgery can help women a more proportionate figure by increasing breast volume and projection that is in better proportion to their body, to create a more “hourglass” shape. By selecting implants that complement the patient’s body frame and contours, top Oakland County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali can enhance overall body symmetry and balance, resulting in a more proportionate and attractive silhouette.

#5. Breast Augmentation Surgery for Better Positioned Breasts

Aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can lead to breast ptosis, or sagging breasts, which may cause dissatisfaction with breast appearance. Breast augmentation surgery – often combined with a breast lift procedure (mastopexy), can address both volume loss and breast sagging that makes the breasts too low on the chest.

By lifting and reshaping the breast tissue and repositioning the nipples to a more youthful height, top Oakland County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali can achieve a more rejuvenated, youthful, and uplifted breast contour.

#6. Breast Augmentation Surgery for Larger Cup Size

For many women in Oakland County seeking breast augmentation surgery, achieving a larger cup size is a primary goal. While they may be satisfied with the “circumference” they may wish a bigger cup size. Breast implants come in a variety of sizes, ranging from moderate to high profile, to accommodate different aesthetic preferences and body types.

During the consultation process with top Oakland County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali, patients can discuss their desired cup size with their plastic surgeon, who will recommend implant sizes that increase cup size to help them achieve a fuller and more voluptuous bustline, and more traditionally feminine curves.

#7. Breast Augmentation Surgery for Better Projection

Breast projection refers to the extent to which the breasts project forward from the chest wall. Some women desire breasts with greater projection to create a more prominent and shapely appearance. Breast augmentation surgery can address this by selecting implants with a higher profile or projection, which can enhance the forward projection of the breasts and create a more pronounced cleavage.

Additionally, techniques such as dual-plane placement or sub-glandular placement can further optimize breast projection, ensuring that the implants are positioned to achieve the desired outcome. By customizing the surgical approach and implant selection to maximize breast projection, top Oakland County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali can achieve the fullness and curvature they desire, enhancing their overall silhouette and confidence.

#8. Breast Augmentation Surgery for Sagging Breasts

Sagging breasts, also known as breast ptosis, can occur due to factors such as aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. While breast augmentation surgery often focuses on enhancing breast size and shape, it can also address mild to moderate breast ptosis. For women with mild sagging, breast implants alone may provide sufficient lift and fullness to improve breast contour and appearance. However, for those with more significant sagging, a combination of breast augmentation with a breast lift procedure (mastopexy) may be recommended.

During a breast lift procedure, excess skin is removed, and the breast tissue is reshaped to lift and firm the breasts. This can help to reposition the nipples to a more youthful height and create a perkier breast appearance. By combining breast augmentation with a breast lift, top Oakland County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali can achieve both increased volume and improved breast position, resulting in a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing breast contour.

Comparing a Mini Tummy Tuck to Full Tummy Tuck Surgery

Mini Tummy Tuck vs Full Tummy Tuck Surgery Techniques

Tummy tuck surgery, medically known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the abdomen by removing and tightening excess skin, removing unwanted fat, and tightening or repairing the abdominal muscles.

Depending on each patient’s unique anatomy and individual goals, they have the option between a full tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck surgery.

In this article, top Oakland County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains the differences between a full tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck surgery.

What is Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Tummy tuck surgery is a surgical procedure performed on the abdomen to remove or tighten excess skin, remove fat, eliminate stretch marks, and tighten or repair weakened abdominal muscles. Tummy tuck surgery is ideal for men and women who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their midsection due to pregnancy, significant weight loss or gain, or the effects of aging.

During the procedure, an incision is made along the lower abdomen, allowing Dr. Ali to remove excess tissue, tighten the underlying muscles, and reposition the remaining skin for a firmer, flatter, smaller abdomen.

What is a Mini Tummy Tuck Surgery?

A mini tummy tuck, also known as a partial abdominoplasty, is a less invasive variation of the traditional tummy tuck procedure.

This technique is suitable for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity and muscle separation below the navel. Unlike a full tummy tuck, which addresses both the upper and lower abdomen, a mini tummy tuck focuses primarily on the area below the belly button, making it an ideal option for patients with isolated lower abdominal concerns.

Good Candidate for Full Tummy Tuck Surgery

Ideal candidates for a full tummy tuck surgery are individuals with significant excess skin and fat deposits in both the upper and lower abdomen, along with weakened or separated abdominal muscles.

This procedure is particularly beneficial for women who have undergone multiple pregnancies or individuals who have experienced substantial weight loss and are left with sagging skin and stretched abdominal muscles.

Good Candidate for Mini Tummy Tuck Surgery

A mini tummy tuck is best suited for patients who have localized excess skin and fat below the belly button, with minimal to no muscle separation. Candidates for a mini tummy tuck typically have a relatively toned abdominal area above the navel and are seeking improvement in the lower abdomen only.

Full Tummy Tuck vs. Mini Tummy Tuck Surgery

The full tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck procedures differ in several aspects, including the type of anesthesia used, cost, and recovery time.

Anesthesia: Full tummy tucks typically require general anesthesia, where the patient is unconscious and unaware during the procedure. Mini tummy tucks can usually be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient’s preference. Local anesthesia numbs the area being treated, while sedation keeps the patient relaxed and comfortable.
Cost:

Cost: Full tummy tucks generally are more expensive than a mini tummy tuck due to the complexity of the surgery, the longer operating time, and the need for general anesthesia. Mini tummy tucks are usually more affordable than a full tummy tuck since it is less extensive and requires less operating time. However, the cost can vary depending on multiple factors.

Recovery: Full tummy tuck surgery typically involves a longer recovery period compared to a mini tummy tuck. Patients may experience somewhat more discomfort and swelling due to the larger incision and muscle tightening involved. It may take several weeks for full recovery, and strenuous activities should be avoided during this time. Mini tummy tuck surgery generally has a shorter recovery period since it involves a smaller incision and less tissue manipulation. Most patients can return to light activities within a week or two after mini tummy tuck surgery, although full recovery may take several weeks.

Why Choose a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon for Tummy Tuck Surgery

Overall, the choice between a full tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck depends on factors such as the patient’s aesthetic goals, the extent of abdominal laxity, and considerations such as anesthesia, cost, and recovery time. Consulting with an experienced and skilled board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali in Oakland County is the only way to determine the most suitable option based on your individual needs.

Best Tummy Tuck Surgery Techniques for a Firm, Flat Abdomen

Get Flatter, Firmer Abs with These Tummy Tuck Surgery Techniques

For many people achieving a flatter, firmer, smaller abdomen can be a challenge, especially after significant weight gain or loss, pregnancy, or simply the effects of age. Frustratingly, even endless dieting and extensive exercise often just isn’t enough to restore one’s belly to a firm, flat, toned, attractive appearance. And unsightly stretch marks often just make matters worse!

The great news is that tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is available at AMAE Plastic Surgery in the Detroit area to give you a tummy you will love. Tummy tuck surgery offers a solution by removing excess skin, fat and stretch marks – while tightening the underlying muscles if necessary – for a smoother and more toned appearance.

However, not all tummy tuck techniques are the same. And not all tummy tuck surgeons are equally qualified. In this article, top Detroit area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explores the best tummy tuck surgery techniques for addressing loose skin, minimizing scarring, and achieving optimal results.

What is Tummy Tuck Surgery?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess fat, tightening, or removing loose skin, and tightening the underlying muscles, if necessary. During the procedure, an incision is skillfully made along the lower abdomen, allowing Dr. Ali to cut away excess skin. The abdominal muscles are then tightened if necessary, and the remaining skin is repositioned and sutured into place.

The belly button is also carefully repositioned during tummy tuck surgery. This step is very important for achieving natural-looking results and ensuring that the belly button is in the right place.

In addition to addressing loose skin and abdominal muscle separation, tummy tuck surgery can get rid of stretch marks – which diet, exercise, and even liposuction cannot do.

Best Tummy Tuck Surgery Techniques for Loose Skin

One of the primary goals of tummy tuck surgery is to address loose or sagging skin in the abdominal area. The best technique for treating loose skin depends on the extent of the laxity and the patient’s individual anatomy. A skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali at AMAE in the Detroit area will be trained in experienced the latest and most advanced tummy tuck techniques.

In cases of mild to moderate skin laxity, a mini tummy tuck may be sufficient, which involves a shorter incision and less tissue removal, and does not tighten the muscles.

For more significant skin laxity, a full tummy tuck with a longer incision may be necessary to achieve optimal results. Additionally, advanced techniques such as high lateral tension abdominoplasty (HLTA) can further tighten the skin and create a more contoured silhouette.

Specific Tummy Tuck Skin Tightening Techniques

Several surgical techniques are utilized during a tummy tuck procedure to tighten the skin and create a smoother, firmer abdomen. One common technique is the traditional or full tummy tuck, which involves making an incision from hip to hip, removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the underlying muscles. The remaining skin is then re-draped and sutured into place, resulting in a tighter and more toned appearance.

Another technique used for skin tightening is the mini tummy tuck, which is ideal for patients with less excess skin and muscle laxity in the lower abdomen. During a mini tummy tuck, a smaller incision is made just above the pubic area, and the skin is tightened and repositioned to create a flatter abdomen. This technique is often combined with liposuction to remove localized fat deposits and enhance the overall contour of the abdomen.

Additionally, some patients may benefit from an extended tummy tuck, which addresses excess skin and fat not only in the abdomen but also in the flanks or lower back. This technique involves extending the incision around the hips to remove excess tissue and create a more comprehensive body contouring effect.

Specific Tummy Tuck Muscle Tightening Techniques

Muscle tightening, or rectus plication, is a critical component of tummy tuck surgery for patients with diastasis recti or weakened abdominal muscles. During the procedure, the surgeon sutures the separated abdominal muscles together, creating a tighter and more toned abdominal wall. This not only improves the appearance of the abdomen but also enhances core strength and stability.

The technique for muscle tightening involves carefully identifying the midline of the abdomen and suturing the rectus abdominis muscles together to eliminate any separation. Dr. Ali may also use permanent sutures or mesh reinforcement to provide additional support and prevent future muscle separation. By tightening the abdominal muscles, patients can achieve a firmer and more sculpted midsection, improving both their appearance and overall core strength.

Scar Placement Options for Tummy Tuck Surgery

Scar placement is one of the most crucial considerations in tummy tuck surgery to ensure optimal aesthetic results and minimize visible scarring. The most common approach is the low transverse or horizontal incision, which is made just above the pubic area and extends from hip to hip. This placement allows the scar to be concealed within the natural contours of the bikini line, making it less noticeable when wearing swimsuits, underwear, or low-rise clothing.

In some cases, patients may require a vertical incision, particularly if they have significant excess skin or muscle laxity in the upper abdomen. This incision extends from the lower edge of the breastbone to the pubic area, resulting in a vertical scar that is easily concealed beneath clothing. While this approach may result in a more visible scar, it allows for more extensive tissue removal and muscle tightening, resulting in a flatter and firmer abdomen.

Additionally, the scar placement can be customized based on the patient’s preferences and anatomical considerations. A skilled and highly experienced board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali at AMAE in the Detroit area can achieve the best possible aesthetic outcome while minimizing visible scarring and ensuring patient satisfaction.

While scarring is part of any surgical procedure, highly experienced board-certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Ali employ techniques to minimize the visibility of tummy tuck scars. The placement of the incisions is carefully planned to ensure they can be concealed beneath clothing or swimsuits. Additionally, techniques such as layered closure and meticulous wound care can help promote optimal healing and reduce the risk of unsightly scars. Patients also need to follow Dr. Ali’s post-operative instructions closely and avoid sun exposure to minimize scar pigmentation.

Get Your Body Back After Pregnancy with Tummy Tuck Surgery

Restore Body Confidence with Tummy Tuck Surgery After Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a beautiful and life-changing experience. However, unfortunately, it can also take a tremendous toll on a woman’s body, leading to stretched or torn abdominal muscles, loose skin, stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise, and unsightly stretch marks.

The good news is that tummy tuck surgery at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI offers a solution for women looking to get rid of their mommy belly, restore their pre-pregnancy figure, and regain their confidence. Dr. Ali at AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, MI is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy, helping women achieve a smoother, firmer, small, flatter abdomen – so they love their body no matter how many kids they’ve had!

In this article, top Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains the ins-and-outs of tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy, to help you decide if this procedure4 is right for you.

The Toll of Pregnancy on the Body

After childbirth and weight loss, most women struggle to regain their pre-pregnancy abdominal tone and firmness. Sure, we all see those “yoga moms” on social media who look perfect a few weeks after giving birth – but it is important to understand that this is not the norm!
The average amount of weight gain in pounds that a woman is left with a year after pregnancy varies widely among individuals. However, studies have shown that it can range from 10 to 30 pounds on average – with most of that being centered around the belly.

A study published in the journal “Obstetrics & Gynecology” found that nearly 45% of women retained more than 10 pounds of their pregnancy weight one year postpartum. Additionally, a survey conducted by BabyCenter found that 61% of mothers reported feeling pressure because they had not returned to their pre-pregnancy weight and shape.

This is in large part because pregnancy isn’t like normal weight gain. It happens rapidly and dramatically within a nine-month period. And most of the weight gain is in the abdominal area where the baby (or babies) are growing! Unlike gradually weight gain, the skin often simply doesn’t have the elasticity to stretch and then bounce back after pregnancy.
Additionally, hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect the elasticity of the skin, causing it to become lax and saggy.

Further, for many women during pregnancy, the abdominal muscles also stretch to accommodate the growing fetus. As a result, many women experience diastasis recti, or separation of the abdominal muscles, which can lead to a protruding belly and weakened core muscles.

What is Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Tummy tuck surgery is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while tightening the underlying muscles, if necessary. During the procedure, an incision is made along the lower abdomen, allowing the surgeon to access and remove excess skin.

The abdominal muscles are then tightened, if necessary, and the remaining skin is repositioned and sutured into place for a smoother and more contoured appearance.

Finally, the belly button is repositioned during tummy tuck surgery. This step is crucial for achieving natural-looking results and ensuring that the belly button has a normal appearance and is in the right place.

Tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy can address various concerns, including loose skin, stretch marks, and abdominal muscle separation, resulting in a firmer, flatter, smaller, and more toned abdomen.

Why Weight Loss Alone Doesn’t Fix Tummy After Pregnancy

While weight loss can help women shed excess pounds gained during pregnancy, it does not address the changes that occur in the abdominal area. Even with diet and exercise, many women still struggle with loose skin, stretch marks, and/or separated abdominal muscles.

Tummy tuck surgery offers a comprehensive solution by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying muscles to create a smoother and firmer abdominal contour. By addressing these specific concerns, top Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali helps women achieve a more sculpted, flat, firm, and toned appearance that reflects their pre-pregnancy figure.

Tummy Tuck for Stretched Abdominal Muscles After Pregnancy

In addition to tightening or removing loose skin, pregnancy can also cause the abdominal muscles to separate or become stretched, resulting in a condition known as diastasis recti. Diastasis recti can persist even after childbirth, leading to a protruding belly and weakened core muscles.

During tummy tuck surgery top Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali repairs the stretched abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) and restoring the integrity and flatness of the abdominal wall. During the procedure, Dr. Ali sutures the separated muscles together, creating a firmer and more stable foundation. By correcting diastasis recti with a tummy tuck, women can improve their abdominal strength and achieve a flatter and more toned midsection.

Timing of Tummy Tuck Surgery After Pregnancy

When considering tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy, timing is crucial to ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of complications. It’s important to wait until at least six months postpartum to allow the body to fully recover from childbirth. Patients are generally also advised to wait until they have completed having children before undergoing tummy tuck surgery, as future pregnancies can reverse the effects of the procedure.

Additionally, women who are breastfeeding should wait until they have finished lactating before undergoing elective surgery to avoid any potential effect on breastmilk from the anesthetic or pain meds.

It’s also essential to consider lifting restrictions and childcare responsibilities during the recovery period, as patients will need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for several weeks postoperatively. So, many mommies wait until their children no longer require carrying before undergoing tummy tuck surgery. Of course, if you are lucky enough to have a husband, grandparent, or nanny who can do the “heavy lifting” after tummy tuck surgery, there’s no need to wait!

Finally, before undergoing tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy, patients should ensure they have reached a stable weight and be in good overall health (including not smoking!). By carefully planning the timing of tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy, patients can achieve the best possible outcomes and enjoy a smoother and more toned abdomen for years to come.
