Which Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatment is Best?
The vagina is actually a flexible or “elastic” muscle that expands during childbirth and sexual intercourse and “snaps back” in shape afterwards. But as a woman ages, hormonal changes reduce the strength of the muscle and surrounding connective tissues in the vagina, causing it to lose elasticity. The resulting vaginal laxity can negatively impact a woman and her partner’s satisfaction during sex – and can also contribute to symptoms such as vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, and urinary incontinence.
What is Vaginal Rejuvenation?
Previously the only treatment for vaginal laxity was surgical vaginal tightening. But in the last 15 years, a handful of new, non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments have been developed. The three most popular are Viveve (developed in 2005), MonaLisa Touch (created in 2012), and ThermiVa (released in 2016).
In addition to “tightening up down there”, these vaginal rejuvenation as it can treat a wide range of vaginal conditions, including: loss of vaginal lubrication, painful sex, urinary incontinence, and loss of ability to reach orgasm. Vaginal rejuvenation can also refresh the appearance of the labia – restoring plumpness to drooping or wrinkled tissue.
Treatment Options for Vaginal Rejuvenation
Viveve and ThermiVa are both radiofrequency treatments that use a small probe or wand that is inserted inside the vagina to gently deliver pulses of form of electromagnetic energy which remodels vaginal and labia collagen.
MonaLisa Touch, however, uses laser “fractional ablation” to remove the outer layer of skin cells to stimulate vaginal collagen production in the labia and vagina.
Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatments
Because laser vaginal rejuvenation treatments like MonaLisa Touch are “ablative,” anesthetic (numbing cream or shot) must be applied prior to treatment. Juliet, DiVa, Femilift, and IntimaLase are other laser vaginal rejuvenation treatments.
MonaLisa Touch patients typically experience some light spotting, cramping, crusting, oozing or discharge of tissues after treatment. Laser vaginal rejuvenation patients must also avoid sex for several days after treatment.
Three MonaLisa Touch treatments are recommended, spaced six weeks apart.
Radiofrequency Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatments
Radiofrequency (RF) vaginal rejuvenation treatments – like Viveve and ThermiVa – have the advantage over laser procedures because they do not require the application of anesthetic. This is because RF energy is “non-ablative” and does not destroy any skin cells.
With most radiofrequency (RF) vaginal rejuvenation treatments – including Viveve and ThermiVa – patients can still engage in intercourse the same day as treatment.
But, like MonaLisa Touch, ThermiVa radiofrequency vaginal rejuvenation also require a series of three treatments spaced one month to six weeks apart. However, Viveve RF vaginal rejuvenation only requires a single treatment.
Viveve also offers several other advantages over ThermiVa. Viveve more effectively improves vaginal tone and tightness due to its ability to penetrate tissues 8-10 times deeper than ThermiVa. Also, Viveve features a cryogen-cooling tip, that makes it far more comfortable than ThermiVa.
ThermiVA reports that maintenance treatments are needed between 8 and 12 months, MonaLisa Touch recommends a maintenance treatment at one year, and Viveve results last the longest with maintenance treatments not needed until a year to a year and a half later.
