The Science Behind Vaginal Rejuvenation (Part 1)
Let’s face it – most of us would rather skip the science and just know if something works or not. (I don’t know how my cell phone actually works, do you?) But a some of us are self-proclaimed “science geeks” who want all of the technical details behind any medical procedure.
If you want all the technical details of how and why and how Viveve Vaginal Rejuvenation works to tighten the vagina, remodel the labia, improve sexual sensation, and reduce bladder incontinence, this article is for you!
In this article we get a little more scientific than usual, and share with you the amazing science behind state-of the-art, nonsurgical Viveve vaginal rejuvenation treatment.
What is Vaginal Laxity?
Just like skin, vaginal tissue is comprised of collagen fibers. Both the effects of time, and/or with physical damage, can cause the collagen to lose its strength and shape. This results in a feeling of looseness (laxity), especially around the vaginal opening.
Common causes of vaginal laxity include aging, vaginal childbirth and other stress on the tissue, and even lifestyle (such as weight gain or smoking). Vaginal laxity affects a woman’s quality of life in a number of ways, including loss of sexual sensation and satisfaction, as well as urinary incontinence.
The name “Viveve” is derived from the Greek word for New Life (Vive), because that is what a single-session treatment does for vaginal soft tissue.
Viveve Vaginal Rejuvenation Technology
The Viveve vaginal treatment uses a cryogen-cooled monopolar radiofrequency (CMRF) that has been clinically proven to tighten and regenerate vaginal tissue.
In order for vaginal issue tightening and strengthening to occur and be sustained up to 12 months and beyond, substantial heating at depth is required.
The CMRF system uniformly delivers gentle volumetric heating to deeper vaginal tissue, while simultaneously cooling delicate surface tissue.
Viveve is the only vaginal rejuvenation treatment on the market with algorithmically-controlled heating and cooling.
This deep heating stimulates the body’s natural collagen formation process – while the cooling keeps the procedure comfortable.
Cryogen-cooled monopolar radiofrequency (CMRF) technology delivers volumetric heating at precise temperatures to stimulate robust neo-collagenesis. Monopolar energy penetrates 3-5 mm deep into connective tissue. And capacitive coupling distributes energy evenly across the treatment tip for uniform heating.
At the same time, reverse thermal gradient cools and protects the surface mucosa. Reproducible delivery parameters and algorithms are preset in the treatment device for controlled heating and cooling.
How Viveve Tightens the Vagina
Most women experience some vaginal changes as a result of pregnancy and childbirth, weight gain, hormonal changes, menopause and aging. All of these factors can lead to a loss of collagen, causing the vagina to lose its strength and structure and become “loose” or “lax”. In as many as 40% of women this looseness of the vaginal canal results in a loss of sexual pleasure – as well as loss of confidence in intimate situations.
In less technical terms, the Viveve procedure applies radiofrequency heat to the walls of the vagina using a slender wand. This stimulates collagen production, which helps to strengthen and thicken the muscles and tissues in the walls of the vagina.
As a result of the thickened and strengthened vaginal tissue, the vagina feels tighter. This not only increases sexual sensation and reduces dryness, but also helps stop embarrassing bladder leakage.
