What Are Exosome Skin Care Treatments?

By now, most people have heard of “stem cell therapy” for use in both medical and cosmetic procedures. But many individuals are not yet aware of an even newer cellular rejuvenation technology called “exosome therapy.”

Exosome treatments are a cutting-edge therapy in the field of regenerative medicine that can restore and rejuvenate cells, almost anywhere on the body. This month AMAE Plastic Surgery in Birmingham became one of the first aesthetic practices in the greater Detroit area to offer revolutionary exosome treatments for skin rejuvenation.

In this article, Birmingham, MI board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains what exosomes are, how they work, and why they are one of the most advanced and effective skin resurfacing and anti-aging treatments currently available.

What Are Exosomes?

Exosomes are a type of ‘extracellular vesicles’ that are naturally produced by cells in the body, and they contain a variety of molecules that help regulate cellular processes and communicate between cells.

‘Extracellular vesicles’ are small structures that are released from cells and contain various molecules such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids (RNA). Exosomes are the smallest type of extracellular vesicles, ranging in size from a microscopic 30 to 150 nanometers (By comparison, a human hair is approximately 80,000 – 100,000 nanometers wide).

Exosomes work to help transfer the various molecules such as RNA, proteins, and lipids between cells, that influence cellular behavior and facilitate intercellular communication. Exosomes have been found to play important roles in various biological processes, including immune responses, tissue regeneration, and disease progression.

In lay terms, exosomes are like little delivery drivers that bring the materials to cells that help them fight inflammation and repair themselves.

Exosomes in Medical Treatments

Before being used for skin rejuvenation, exosomes had been used for their potential in treating a range of medical conditions. Researchers have used exosome therapy in tissue regeneration, wound healing, neurological disorders, and even cancer therapy.

While there is still much to learn about exosomes and their potential applications, scientists and researchers agree that exosomes offer a promising avenue for regenerative medicine and the treatment of a variety of conditions.

Exosomes in Cosmetic Treatments

Only very recently have exosome treatments been used in the field of cosmetic medicine for their potential to improve skin quality and reduce or revers the signs of aging. And early results are promising, with many patients reporting improved skin quality and reduced signs of aging after exosome treatments.

In the case of skin rejuvenation, exosomes are thought to help stimulate collagen and elastin production – which improves skin texture, tone, and elasticity.

A number of clinical trials have studied exosomes for skin care – and more are currently underway exploring the potential of exosome treatments for a range of conditions, including skin aging and tissue regeneration.

One clinical study demonstrating the benefits of exosomes in skin rejuvenation is “Topical Administration of Exosomes Derived from Human Adipose Stem Cells Rejuvenates Skin in Aged Mice” conducted by Kim et al. in 2017. In this study, the researchers topically administered exosomes derived from human adipose stem cells to the skin of aged mice, resulting in significant improvements in skin thickness, collagen production, and overall skin quality.

Another study, “Exosomes derived from human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells alleviate atopic dermatitis” conducted by Lee et al. in 2018, demonstrated the potential of exosomes in treating skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis through their anti-inflammatory properties.

Exosomes Combined with Other Aesthetic Treatments

While exosomes are incredibly effective on their own, their greatest benefit in cosmetic and anti-aging treatments is their ability to enhance the results of almost any skincare technology for faster and more dramatic skin rejuvenating results.

At AMAE Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in Birmingham, MI we offer clinical grade Exo-Xom brand exosome therapy combined with almost all of our advanced laser and radiofrequency skin resurfacing treatments, including Profound Skin Tightening, CO2RE Wrinkle Reduction, Morpheus8 Microneedling, and more.

Since these technologies all work by stimulating the body’s own cellular repair mechanisms to heal, repair and rejuvenate the skin on a cellular level, adding exosome therapy dramatically improves these treatments’ already-spectacular results.

By enhancing the body’s ability to reduce inflammation and produce renewed collagen and elastin, exosomes help reduce unwanted pigmentation, lines and wrinkles. Exosomes also leave skin visibly firmer, tighter, smoother and more youthful.
