The 5 Types of Breast Surgery

The 5 Types of Breast Surgery

Loving her body helps a woman feel sexy and confident, whether she is curvy, lean or somewhere in between. And a woman’s breasts may help her feel attractive (or self-conscience) depending on their size, shape, position and how well she feels they flatter or detract from her overall physical appearance.

Breast surgery, when performed by an experienced and skilled plastic surgeon, can help a woman feel good about her body, by enabling her to change the shape, size and even the position of her breasts. Today, breast surgery is considered a routine medical procedure that is not only safe, but also becoming more and more affordable, with financing options to help offset the cost.

In this article, Macomb County plastic surgeon Dr. Ali explains the five types of breast surgery that a woman can elect to have, to improve her bust line.

Breast Reduction Surgery

Women with breasts that are too large for their body can experience serious health issues, from pain in the upper body, back and neck to posture problems that can become quite serious as they age. Due to its positive health impact, breast reduction surgery is becoming quite common, because it can help change the lives of women at any age so they can enjoy a more active lifestyle, free from pain.

Breast Lift Surgery

Over time, breasts of any size and shape will naturally begin to droop and lose their youthful appearance. Age, gravity, pregnancy, nursing and even heredity can cause the breasts to lose their elasticity and droop and sag.

Breast lift surgery can help restore and enhance the breast’s position and shape, and reduce the signs of aging. In addition to the breast being lifted and tightened, the procedure removes excess skin. The surgeon can also repositions the nipple higher on the breast for a perkier look.

Breast lift surgery can be performed with or without augmenting the breast with implants, if the patient would like the breasts to also appear fuller or larger.

Breast Augmentation Surgery (Implants)

Breast augmentation surgery is also referred to as breast implant surgery or breast enhancement surgery. In this procedure, the natural breast tissue is supplemented with inserts made from silicone or saline called implants.

Breast implant surgery can enhance the bust line of any women who feel their breasts are too small due to heredity, weight loss, or aging – all of which can impact a woman’s self-esteem.

Nipple Correction Surgery

Many women choose to have their nipples cosmetically corrected for a more pleasing appearance. Nipple Correction Surgery can solve a variety of nipple concerns from puffy, protruding, oversized or inverted nipples to altering the size and shape of the entire areola.

Nipple surgery can be performed alone – or along with additional breast surgery for enlargements, reductions, lifts or reconstruction.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery

For women who survived breast cancer, as well as women who have experienced physical chest trauma or burns, breast reconstruction surgery can help restore a better quality of life and renew their self-esteem.

Technological advances have given surgeons like Dr. Ali the ability to not only restore a patient’s beautiful female shape but to also preserve breast sensitivity which allows her to enjoy more natural sexuality.

And, with the 1998 passing of the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act, all health insurance plans are required by law to cover breast reconstruction surgery – including breast implants – for patients who endured a mastectomy or lumpectomy due to cancer and other diseases.

Breast Surgery Statistics Show Increase in All Procedures

Breast Surgery Statistics –

If you’re “on the fence” about considering breast surgery – including breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction – take a look at the most recent statistics! Data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows that thousands more people opt for breasts surgery year.

Of the nearly 1.8 million cosmetic surgeries performed in 2017, the number one surgery was breast augmentation – with more than 300,000 performed. This represents and increase of 3 percent over 2016.

According to the ASPS President David H. Song, MD, MBA, FACS, “… traditional facial procedures and breast augmentations are still among the most popular … patients have more options than ever, and working closely with their surgeon, they’re able to focus on specific target areas of the body to achieve the look they desire.”

Breast Lift Surgery Statistics

Since 2000, ASPS statistics show that Breast Lifts Surgery increased by 90 percent from the year 2000 to 2017. Statistics reveal that 52,836 breast lift surgeries were performed in the US in 2000, compared to 99,614 breast lifts in 2015! In fact, breast lift surgery showed the most overall growth of any plastic surgery during that time period.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Statistics

Of the almost 2 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2015 and 2016 and 2017, the number one was breast augmentation surgery every year. 279,143 breast augmentation surgeries were performed in the US in 2015, 291, 367 were performed in 2016; and 300,378 were performed in 2017 – for a full 34 percent increase from the year 2000.

Breast Reduction Surgery Statistics

There were 68,106 aesthetic breast reduction surgeries performed in the United States in 2015. And, for the first time, men accounted for more than 40 percent of these aesthetic breast reduction surgeries.

A total of 27,456 breast reduction surgeries were performed on men in 2015, representing a 35 percent growth since 2000.

Said the President of the ASPS, “As plastic surgery is becoming more common and accepted in men, we’re seeing more of them undergo procedures to tighten and tone problem areas, like the breasts.”

He added, “This procedure is often done in younger men who face genetic challenges with the size and shape of their breasts, and when appropriate, surgery can make a big difference in their lives.”

Breast Reconstruction Surgery Statistics

For the past several years the ASPS has spearheaded a national Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign to educate and empower women to make informed decisions following breast cancer diagnosis and mastectomy. And, as more breast cancer patients become aware of breast reconstruction surgery options, the number of breast reconstruction surgeries continues to increase dramatically.

In 2015 breast reconstruction surgeries increased to more than 106,300, which represents a remarkable 35 percent since 2000.

“That’s encouraging, and we hope to continue to get the word out to all women who are facing breast cancer, so they will be well aware of all their reconstructive options from the outset of diagnosis,” said the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Breast Lift Vs. Breast Reduction – What’s the Difference?

Bloomfield Hills, Detroit, MI – When people think of breast surgeries, breast augmentation is typically the first procedure that comes to mind. And for good reason. Breast enhancement happens to be one of the most popular plastic surgeries the world over. Other breast surgeries may not get as much press, yet more women are opting for them than ever before. Breast lifts and breast reductions are becoming increasingly popular, and it’s important to learn the difference between the two before going under the knife.

Why Breast Surgery?

Many women see breasts as symbols of femininity. Furthermore, the size, shape and general appearance of her breasts can affect a woman’s self-esteem either positively or negatively. Many women choose breast surgery – either a breast lift or breast reduction – because age has taken its toll, or following childbirth. Some women seek out breast surgery during or after menopause and following significant weight loss.

Michigan plastic surgeon, Dr. M. Azhar Ali, regularly performs breast surgeries at Amae Plastic Surgery Center in Bloomfield Hills, a subsection of Detroit. According to Dr. Ali, breast lifts and breast reductions are both gaining in popularity, but the final decision of which surgery to choose should only come after a consultation and careful examination.

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift is recommended when a woman’s breast has lost its youthful shape and appearance due to age, childbirth or other factors. During the procedure, excess and loose skin are removed, and the nipple is repositioned to a higher level. For breasts that also lack volume, breast implants may be added. The after-effects include youthful and self-supporting breasts that help a woman’s confidence surge.

Following surgery, the woman will be required to wear a support bra around the clock for around two to four weeks. The bra helps to support the breasts while they heal. Activities should be limited so that the woman doesn’t overexert herself for at least four weeks, but she should be able to return to work after a week or so.

What is a Breast Reduction?

A woman’s breasts can swell during pregnancy or after weight gain, and some women have overly large breasts that are passed down through their family histories.

A breast reduction is recommended when the breasts have become so large that the woman experiences back, neck or shoulder pain. Oversized breasts can also make it uncomfortable to wear bras and, in some cases, exercise becomes next to impossible.

During the procedure, and in most cases, a three-part incision is made around the areola. This is also known as the “anchor” technique. Since the anchor technique can tend to produce a vertical scar around the nipple and down the fold of the breast, another procedure known as the “lollypop” method may be used. The lollypop eliminates the horizontal scar but is not always called for. The type of procedure performed is chosen by the plastic surgeon only after careful examination.

Dr. Ali notes that, “Depending on the size and shape of the breast, I will perform the type of surgery that produces the best outcome for the patient’s well-being and self-esteem.”
Following a breast lift, the patient should refrain from engaging in strenuous activity for at least six weeks. A support bra will also be used for a breast reduction, and normal activity should resume after a few weeks.

Other Breast Surgery Differences

A breast lift can cost as much as $5,000, and a breast reduction can run between $6,500 and $7,500. Both procedures offer about the same amount of downtime, and both can considerably enhance a woman’s self-esteem. One glaring difference between the two procedures is insurance. While a breast lift is rarely covered by insurance, breast reductions are often included. That’s because a breast reduction can alleviate pain and increase the woman’s quality of life.

Both a breast lift and breast reduction can also be part of a mommy makeover procedure, which is intended to give women a new lease on life following childbirth.

When Bigger Isn’t Better – Breast Reduction Surgery and You

Bloomfield, Hills, MI – You’ve heard the phrase bigger is better, but for some women, that isn’t necessarily the case. Women with exceptionally large breasts can experience physical pain and discomfort, as well as self-consciousness associated with their breast size.

“When we think of cosmetic surgery, we often think of women seeking larger, fuller breasts,” says Dr. Ali. But the Bloomfield Hills plastic surgeon says that isn’t always the case. “There are many women who develop overly large breasts during puberty and who suffer physically and emotionally because of it. They seek me out to lead a more active, confident lifestyle.”

Breasts that are too large can cause pain in the neck, back and shoulders, rashes along the folds of the breasts, and indentations on the shoulders from bra straps. Patients with large breasts may have poor posture, which aggravates back pain, and they may also have difficulty leading an active lifestyle due to the weight of their breasts.

Additionally, women may be self-conscious about their large breasts. It can be difficult to find properly fitting clothes and bras. But there is an answer. Breast reduction is a very common procedure that is performed regularly by Dr. Ali.

A breast reduction procedure removes excess fat, glandular tissue and skin in order to create a breast size that is in better proportion with the patient’s body, as well as to relieve any discomfort associated with the size of the breasts.

There are several surgical techniques to reduce a breast so your procedure will depend on your surgeon’s experience and preference, as well as the size of the breasts.

The most common procedure Dr. Ali uses is a three part incision. Incisions are made around the areola, then vertically down the breast and horizontally beneath the breast in the natural crease. For patients who may wish to have fewer scars, a technique called the lollypop technique can also be used. In this case, the incision will only be around the areola and then straight down to the fold, eliminating the horizontal incision.

The type of procedure that is best for you can only be determined after a careful examination by Dr. Ali. Once the procedure is chosen, excess tissue, fat and skin will be removed, and then the nipple and areola will be repositioned. Dr. Ali can also reduce the size of the areola to make it more proportionate to the new breast size, if need be.

In some cases, excess tissue is removed through liposuction. If the breast is large in size due to fatty tissue alone, and there is no excess skin, Dr. Ali may be able to use liposuction alone to properly reduce the breast size.

Once the excess tissue and skin is removed, the breast will be lifted and shaped. Dr. Ali takes careful time in contouring the breast to ensure an aesthetically pleasing breast. He will layer sutures in the breast tissue to support the newly sized breasts, and then use sutures, skin adhesive and/or surgical tape to close the skin.

Incision lines will be permanent, but Dr. Ali takes great care to ensure that they will fade over time and be well hidden when wearing a swimsuit or bra.

Your results will be immediate. However, you’ll experience some discomfort in the days immediately following. There will be some bruising and swelling, but it should subside in the weeks after surgery. Patients should avoid strenuous activity for at least six weeks after surgery.

Patients will be asked to wear a special support bra for several weeks after the surgery. The nipple may have limited sensation immediately after surgery, but normal sensation will return within four to six weeks.

You will be given care instructions following your procedure. It is important to carefully follow all of Dr. Ali’s instruction to ensure proper healing. In just a few weeks, you’ll be able to return to normal activities and experience life to its fullest.

If you’re ready to discover how a breast reduction procedure can reshape your life, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ali today.

Breast Reduction – Could It Change Your Life?

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a safe and effective option for women with large, heavy breasts. Women with large breasts may not only be dissatisfied with their body image, but also experience physical pain and discomfort, including back or shoulder pain. In addition, women may also suffer from skin irritation, bra strap indentations, concerns with posture, headaches, and even physical limitations with activities and exercise.

The best candidates for this surgery include:

  • Women whose breasts are fully developed and breasts are enlarged (generally, a size D or larger)
  • Healthy women who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Non-smokers (smoking may delay healing and increase the risk of complications).

A consultation with a cosmetic surgeon at Amae Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Center is the first step to learn if you are a candidate for the procedure. Dr. Ali can explain how a reduction mammoplasty can improve the appearance of your breasts and relieve pain, discomfort and any associated symptoms you may have resulting from large, misshapen breasts.

How do I prepare for breast reduction?

Preparation for your breast reduction surgery includes:

  • Evaluation of your general health and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors
  • Examination of your breasts, photographs, and possible detailed measurements of their size and shape, skin quality, placement of your nipples and areolas
  • Discussing your options, recommending a course of treatment, including any risks or complications
  • Discussing the use of anesthesia during your procedure

The success and safety of your breast reduction procedure depends on you being completely open and honest during your consultation. Being able to discuss why you want the surgery, your expectations and desired outcomes, along with a thorough medical evaluation will help lead to the best end result.
