Answers to Cat Eye Lift Surgery Frequently Asked Questions (Part 1)

Cat eye surgery – sometimes called a fox eye lift – is quickly becoming one of the most popular plastic surgery requests Dr. Ali receives from patients across the entire Detroit area.

The cat eye look has been prized for thousands of years – even as far back as ancient Egypt. Cleopatra’s dramatic cat eye was achieved using kohl, as far back as 50 BC. And who can forget Marilyn Monroe’s and Bridget Bardot’s classic cat eye makeup in the 1960s? Of course, back then, the only way to achieve a cat eye look was with strategically placed eyeliner.

Today, however, the fox eye look can be made permanent with cat eye lift surgery (canthoplasty). Popularized by many young models, singers, and influencers, cat eye surgery is one of today’s most fashionable cosmetic surgery procedures. Allegedly Bella Hadid, Ariana Grande and Kendal Jenner have all gotten their beautiful almond cat eyes not from genetics but from canthoplasty surgery.

Now, the same celebrity cat lift eye surgery is being performed in the Detroit area by renowned board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali. In this two-part article Dr. Ali answers his Detroit area patients’ most Frequently Asked Questions about cat eye surgery.

What is Cat Surgery?

Cat eye (or fox eye) surgery is a specific type of eyelid lift medically known as ‘canthoplasty’ performed by a plastic surgeon. Canthoplasty tightens and elongates the eye horizontally, slightly lifting the out corners of the eye, by surgically altering the ‘lateral canthus’ (the corner where the eyelids meet).

Canthoplasty lifts and repositions the canthus (outer corner of the eye) to literally change the shape of the eye – giving it a more upwardly angled, almond shape.

Who is a Good Candidate for Cat Eye Surgery?

Originally, canthoplasty surgery was typically used to correct the eyes of patients over 50 that were drooping at the corners due to age. It was often done in combination with blepharoplasty which removes excess skin, fat, and bags around the eyes.

However, when used to create cat eyes, canthoplasty is now most commonly performed on women younger than fifty – in their 20s, 30s and 40s – for cosmetic rather than anti-aging purposes.

Because this surgery only requires extremely small incisions and has a relatively fast recovery period, most adult women of any age who are in good health can safely undergo this plastic surgery. Women with scarring disorders, eye conditions, underlying medical conditions should discuss their situation with Dr. Ali before opting for cat eye surgery.

Is Cat Eye Surgery Permanent?

Yes and no. Canthoplasty is a permanent surgery, in that it literally changes the shape and position of the eyes. However, it must be kept in mind that even plastic surgery cannot stop time completely. After cat eye surgery one’s skin will continue to age.

Every person ages differently, and there are a number of personal factors that will affect the lifespan of any cosmetic surgery. Some factors are beyond one’s control. The patient’s hereditary aging process and skin laxity, as well as gravity, will continue to take its toll on any person’s skin.

However, making good lifestyle choices will extend the lifespan of any plastic surgery results. Good nutrition and ongoing proper skin care can extend the longevity of cat eye lift surgery. While, smoking, and UV sun exposure can cause skin to lose tightness and tone prematurely.

How Do I Select a Plastic Surgeon for Cat Eye Lift Surgery?

While eye lift surgery is minimally invasive, it is by no means a ‘simple’ or ‘routine’ surgery. Because canthoplasty is permanent – and because you are dealing with your eyes and your facial appearance – you should only trust your cat eye surgery to a highly skilled board-certified plastic surgeon.
