Upper & lower blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) rejuvenates the eyes by removing or repositioning excess skin, fat, and muscle. Upper blepharoplasty corrects drooping or sagging upper eyelids, which can impair vision, cause a heavy or tired look, and add years to one’s appearance. Lower blepharoplasty reduces puffiness, under-eye bags, and wrinkles beneath the eyes – creating a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Patients may get either upper or lower blepharoplasty, or both, depending on their eyelids’ condition.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Upper or Lower Blepharoplasty (Eyelid) Surgery
Candidates for upper blepharoplasty are healthy men and women with sagging upper lids, or visual field obstruction – typically the result of age-related loss of elasticity in the eyelid skin. Candidates for lower blepharoplasty surgery are healthy men and women with puffiness or “bags” under the eyes.
There is no age limit for blepharoplasty as long as the patient is in reasonably good health. Dr. Ali has performed thousands of eyelid surgeries on patients of all ages – even into their eighties and nineties.

Upper blepharoplasty uses an incision hidden in the crease of the eyelid to remove excess skin and tissue. Lower blepharoplasty can be performed via an incision just beneath the lash line or inside the eyelid (transconjunctival), allowing fat repositioning for a smoother contour.

Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation. In most cases it is performed in our plastic surgery office without the need for a trip to a separate surgical center or hospital. Patients are kept comfortable throughout the blepharoplasty procedure. After eyelid surgery, mild soreness or tightness is managed with medication and cool compresses.

Upper eyelid surgery takes about 1 hour. Combined upper and lower blepharoplasty typically takes 2 to 3 hours.

Recovery after blepharoplasty usually allows return to work in about a week. Driving is safe when prescription medications are no longer required, and vision is clear. Bruising and swelling resolve over 2 weeks, and final results emerge as tissues heal over several months.

Does Dr. Ali do “Cat Eye” Eye Lifts?
A specific type of cosmetic eyelift that raises the outer corners slightly is known as a cat eye lift. A cat eye lift is a cosmetic enhancement sometimes performed on its own and sometimes in combination with blepharoplasty. The goal is to subtly elevate and elongate the outer corners of the eyes, creating a more almond-shaped, lifted appearance. This is achieved by carefully repositioning the outer canthus (outer corner of the eyelid) through small adjustments to the skin and tendon structures at the edge of the eye. The procedure is purely aesthetic and does not address medical concerns such as impaired vision. When performed with or without blepharoplasty, the cat eye lift can subtly but beautifully refine the overall eye shape, enhancing harmony and balance in facial appearance.
